Erik ten Hag faces crucial next five games as pressure piles on Man Utd boss amid horror start and dressing room turmoil

ERIK TEN HAG is facing a crucial few weeks as he desperately tries to kickstart Manchester United’s season amid problems on and off the pitch.Defeat to Brighton on Saturday means the Red Devils have picked up just six points from five games and are 13th in the table.

To make matters worse there was a dressing room bust-up at the weekend with captain Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay at the heart of the dispute.
It adds to the list of growing concerns for Ten Hag, who is currently without Antony and Jadon Sancho due to separate off-field issues.
Several key players are unavailable through injury including Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane, while big-money siging Rasmus Hojlund is only just available and has been unable to complete 90 minutes.
Aaron Wan Bissaka is the latest player to be sidelined – the right-back faces weeks on the treatment table which leaves United short of options in defence.

That is far from ideal for the Red Devils, with a trip to Bayern Munich up next on Wednesday in their first Champions League group game.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are unbeaten this season and with Harry Kane in their ranks they are one of the favourites to win the competition.
They have also dished out thrashings to a number of British teams in the past – famously beating Tottenham 7-2 on their own turf four years ago.
Defeat at the Allianz Arena would pile even more pressure on Ten Hag and his squad to beat Burnley, who showed promising signs in their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest on Monday.

After that United face a double header with Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and the Prem, with both matches taking place at Old Trafford.
United won the Carabao Cup last season so exiting the competition early this time round could be difficult for fans and club chiefs to accept, particularly after splashing the cash on the likes of Hojlund and Mason Mount in the summer.
Galatasaray are another potential banana skin and a lot could be riding on the match if United lose to Bayern, with success in the Champions League integral to the club. More

Theo Walcott reveals Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta gave best team talk he’d ever heard BEFORE he became a manager

ARSENAL icon Theo Walcott has revealed his former teammate Mikel Arteta gave him the best team talk ever before he became a manager. Arteta has been Arsenal’s manager since 2019 and England legend Walcott has said he was always destined for a career in management.

The Spaniard took over the Gunners who were in desperate need of a rebuild.
He has since pulled together a young squad that finished second in the Premier League last term.
He returned to the Emirates having previously captained the Gunners to an FA Cup victory as a player.
Walcott, 34, has told Sky Sports that the greatest team talk he received was actually from Arteta.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
He said: “It was actually Mikel Arteta, he was playing for us at the time at Arsenal, it was when we were struggling and not making the top four.
“And he essentially called a meeting for the players only, and he just said it how it was, said a few truths, he said exactly what we needed to do.
“And then after that moment, we made fourth quite comfortably in the end.
“Essentially that inspired everyone, and I’m not surprised why he’s doing so well here at Arsenal.

“That sort of moment alone was like ‘he’s a manager, meant to be’. For me, he’s made Arsenal into an absolute force now.”
The former midfielder was teammates with Arteta for five years at Arsenal and they won two FA Cups together.
The Spaniard spent 12 years in the Premier League playing for Everton and Arsenal.
He scored 35 goals in 209 games for the Toffees.
And Arteta followed that up with 16 strikes in 150 appearances for Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Walcott has even played under Arsene Wenger and Carlo Ancelotti meaning his thoughts about Arteta are a big praise.
The Spaniard’s ability to motivate his players and make a young more resilient squad has been clear after their 1-0 victory this weekend to Everton.
Arsenal had failed to earn a point against Everton away since October 2017. More

Forgotten Man Utd flop signed to replace Cristiano Ronaldo scores beauty in MLS aged 34 as commentator hails his ‘class’

FORMER Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan scored a banger while playing in the third tier of American football yesterday. His team, Charlotte Independence ply their trade in the USL League One, two divisions below the MLS.

The former United winger rolled back the years as he spun on a sixpence 25 yards from goal before curling the ball home with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Reacting to the goal, the American commentator said: “Oh! That’s the class of a man that used to play for Manchester United.”
And fans on Twitter also reacted to the former United man rolling back the years.
One wrote: “When are Man Utd going to buy him back?”

    Another wrote: “Lethal strike!”
And a third wrote: “Left footed goal, thanks Gabby!”
Obertan, 34, joined the third-tier American side in 2021 from Turkish side Erzurumspor.
It’s the latest move in a journeyman career for the winger since leaving United.
    Most read in Football
Obertan was signed from Bordeaux in 2009 by Sir Alex Ferguson to help shoulder the burden of replacing Cristiano Ronaldo – who had just joined Real Madrid.
But the winger’s two year stint in Manchester proved to be miserable as he scored just one goal in 28 appearances for The Red Devils.
He was then sold to Newcastle in 2011 where he made 75 appearances, scoring three goals and registering 10 assists during that time.
Moves to Anzhi Makhachkala and Wigan Athletic followed before joining Bulgarian side Levski Sofia and then Erzurumspor.
Sir Alex Ferguson had high-hopes when he signed Obertan at the age of just 17.
United had to fend off interest from Arsenal and AC Milan to make the signing in 2009, and Ferguson said after securing his signature: “Gabriel is a player we have tracked for a few years now … there is a goal in Gabby, there is no question of that.”
Ferguson wasn’t exactly far off with that, with Obertan scoring a singular goal during his stint with the Red Devils More

Chelsea’s INJURED XI is worth incredible £385m as record signing Moises Caicedo is latest to miss time

Captain Reece James has been absent since suffering yet another hamstring injury on the opening day against Liverpool.
That is just one of several issues Pochettino faces, with injuries affecting every department on the pitch.
Caicedo missed the trip to Bournemouth and will be assessed ahead of the match against Aston Villa at the weekend.
The Blues midfield is down to bare bones with fellow summer signing Romeo Lavia also unavailable.

The 19-year-old is yet to make his Chelsea debut and the club fear he could be out for an extended period due to an ankle problem.
Another young player, Carney Chukwuemeka, has been out for a month after making a promising start to the season, but he could be back in a few weeks.
Noni Madueke could also be back soon after returning from England Under-21s duty with a small muscle issue.
However the same cannot be said of Christopher Nkunku, who could be out until Christmas after undergoing knee surgery.

Wesley Fofana also injured his knee and may miss the entire season – injury has restricted the £70m signing to just 20 Chelsea appearances since arriving last year.
Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah’s injuries mean Poch has been down to slim pickings at the back, particularly as Marc Cucurella missed the trip to the Cherries because of illness.
However there is some good news for Pochettino as Armando Broja is close to a return, though the club will take precautions as the striker is recovering from an ACL injury. More

Tough guy Ten Hag’s not a school headmaster… if his approach doesn’t lead Man Utd to more wins then it isn’t working

WE know he’s a tough guy, who’s not afraid to make the tough calls, Erik ten Hag.That much is brutally apparent.
Erik ten Hag already has two big questions to answer early in the seasonCredit: EPA
Contrast Ten Hag’s treatment of Jadon Sancho with the more understanding approach to Richarlison shown by Spurs manager Ange PostecoglouCredit: Rex
Here’s the guy who bombed out Cristiano Ronaldo, stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy, released David de Gea and has now frozen out Jadon Sancho.
Big balls, this fella. Proper hardline. An alpha male. A ‘come on punk, make my day’ kind of a boss.
Cue a standing ovation from the cheap seats, where they’re convinced Premier League footballers are all filthy-rich prima donnas who need to be brought down a peg.
Ten Hag says there was ‘no good culture’ when he arrived at Manchester United, after the benign reign of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and that supply-teacher interlude under Ralf Rangnick.
    READ MORE TOP STORIES
And most managerial appointments are a reaction against the predecessor.
Who knows, when Ten Hag goes, maybe United will replace him with Peter Kay or one of Britain’s other leading light entertainers.
But with United in the bottom half of the table after five poor performances out of five, two questions arise.
Firstly, can Ten Hag’s ‘my way or the highway’ routine actually work at an elite club in the 21st century?
    Most read in Football
FREE BETS – BEST BETTING OFFERS AND BONUSES NEW CUSTOMERS
And secondly, while he has proved adept at tearing things apart, is the Dutchman actually showing any signs of building anything positive?
Consider Ten Hag’s approach to  Sancho, against that of Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglou towards Richarlison.
The known circumstances are very different — Sancho is accused of lacking professionalism, while Richarlison has admitted he is struggling on a human level and seeking help with his mental health.
But the contrast in approach between the two managers still feels relevant.
Postecoglou spoke with intelligence and decency about Richarlison’s struggles on Friday.
The following day, the Brazilian headed an equaliser to spark an  improbable injury-time comeback win against Sheffield United.
Ten Hag publicly stated that Sancho had trained poorly when he was left out of the squad for the defeat at Arsenal.
And when Sancho effectively accused his boss of lying and making him a ‘scapegoat’, he refused to  apologise and has been frozen out of first-team training as a result.
Ten Hag has frozen Jadon Sancho out after a controversial disputeCredit: Getty
Consider that Antony  is currently on leave of absence to address accusations of assaulting women, with Mason Greenwood on loan at Getafe after allegations of attempted rape, coercion and assault were dropped.
So it’s not as if Sancho is the baddest man at Carrington. And it’s not as if Ten Hag didn’t need wingers.
Indeed, he sent out a team in a midfield diamond, without wide forwards, against Brighton on Saturday and United took a 3-1 hiding.
The subject of footballers’ mental health is often turned on and off like a tap.
Dele Alli opens up bravely about the impact of an extremely difficult upbringing, and everyone salutes his bravery, promising to remember that footballers are humans and cut them some slack.
Then Sancho gets called out and he’s widely accused of being an ill-disciplined brat.
It would be interesting to hear Sancho’s full story but if he gave it, he would doubtless be fined two weeks’ wages.
Remember that Sancho was given an extended break last season to work on ‘physical and mental issues’.
Maybe a genuine tough guy doesn’t always need to make a show of being the tough guy. Footballers respect managers who are authentic.
Also remember that Sancho was bold enough to leave his comfort zone by moving to Borussia Dortmund as a 17-year-old and tore it up in the Bundesliga — a forerunner to Jude Bellingham.
Paint Sancho as a wrong ‘un all you like but the truth is almost certainly more complex. He’s probably a bundle of contradictions like most of us.
And he’s also a £73million player who operates in a position where United are lacking.
Ten Hag is a football manager, not the headmaster of a reform school.
If his approach doesn’t lead to United winning more football matches, then it isn’t working.
And maybe a genuine tough guy doesn’t always need to make such a show of being the tough guy.
Footballers respect managers who are authentic. Are United’s players respectful of Ten Hag’s methods?
Well it’s not as if Ten Hag’s ‘toughness’ is being reflected on the pitch.Brighton waltzed through a static defence several times as they chalked up their fourth consecutive  victory over United.
This season, United haven’t looked like a team with an identity and a plan.
Ten Hag built a wonderful side at Ajax but there are few signs of anything similar at Old Trafford.
Most of the club’s problems are not Ten Hag’s fault, especially as the Glazer family’s alleged ‘sale process’ drags on tortuously.
But United still spent just under £170million this summer only to have gone backwards.
It was widely expected that United would bid for Harry Kane — who faces them in the Champions League with Bayern Munich tomorrow. But maybe that would have been too obvious — too much like Easy Street for Ten Hag.
Instead, this tough guy walks the hard yards.
He must hope that his players are willing to follow him.
    Lord’s player
SAY anything  negative about the Premier League’s wealthiest clubs and you are  invariably accused of jealousy.
Yet nobody secretly wishes they support one of the Manchester clubs or Chelsea or Newcastle.
No, God’s chosen people are Brighton fans — the street cred of the hard-times back story, the glorious rise, the ridiculously successful transfer policy, the beautiful football and the frequent mullerings of the elite.
As they make their European debut against AEK Athens on Thursday, we wish Seagulls supporters all the very best.

COLIN MURPHY, who has died  aged 79, was a successful lower-league manager, most notably at Lincoln City.
He was an obsessive football watcher, renowned for having the most high-mileage vehicle in the game.
Yet Murphy is best remembered for his  magnificently bewildering programme notes.
Murphy once wrote: “You, me, we, all of us have been forced to breakfast on travesty, lunch on objection and insult, dine on inflicted pressure.“High tea we daren’t sit still long enough to take and, by supper, we were still expected to have been victorious.”
Doubtless followed by: “Glenn Cockerill remains sidelined by a hamstring injury and I’d like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Port Vale to Sincil Bank for today’s  Division Three fixture.”
    Skewered
WHILE waiting to interview Gareth Southgate in a Hampden concourse last week, we perused the menu on offer to Scottish football fans.
Top of the list a kebab pie.
So on behalf of the civilised world, thanks to Jude Bellingham for putting these barbarians in their place.

Chelsea fans ‘sick to their stomach’ as ex-wonderkid scores screamer on Nottingham Forest debut after £3m transfer

And it has not taken long for Hudson-Odoi to settle into his new club after bagging against Burnley.
The 22-year-old picked up the ball just outside the box and took a touch before bending the ball into the top corner.
The brilliant strike stunned fans and left Chelsea supporters feeling as they let the talent leave for peanuts.

Chelsea are struggling for goals and wins this season after drawing 0-0 with Bournemouth at the weekend.
