Kit Symons hails life at Crystal Palace without talisman Wilfried Zaha

CRYSTAL PALACE and Fulham lost talismanic stars in Wilfried Zaha and Aleksandar Mitrovic in the summer. But Kit Symons, who played for both clubs, reckons his ex-sides can sustain their strong start to the new season.

The London pair lie ninth and tenth in the Premier League table ahead of today’s Selhurst Park clash.
And Symons reckons a top-half finish is achievable for Roy Hodgson and Marco Silva rather than finding themselves in a relegation scrap without their big hitters, who are now at Galatasaray and Al-Hilal.
Symons said: “Palace and Fulham are in similar boats having lost big players.
“Zaha and Mitrovic were the talismen, the top men for both clubs but they have had solid starts.

“It’s down to mindset. Look at Harry Kane and Tottenham too. Spurs are playing their best football in years having lost their best player.
“Quite often it puts more responsibility onto other people. Others need to share the responsibility of the group.
“For most clubs they just want to stay up. But Palace and Fulham are both stable with decent squads and I expect both to be very comfortable.
“They are ninth and tenth so it’s not impossible for them both to finish in the top 10.

“They could sneak in there. I’m sure their target will be to keep pushing.
“Both have good managers and with the stability of the clubs – you wouldn’t rule them out from doing it.”
Symons has a strong affinity as he played and managed both Palace and Fulham.
The ex-Wales centre-back left Manchester City for Craven Cottage in 1998 where he played for three seasons then moved to Selhurst Park for the final four years of his playing days.
Symons then became Palace assistant and even had a spell as caretaker boss after the departure of Steve Kember and Terry Bullivant.
Later, he filled a series of roles at Fulham from scout to U21s boss to a year as manager following Felix Magath’s exit in 2014.
Symons will be at Selhurst Park as a guest of Palace today and he added: “I have a lot of time for both clubs and I like to see them do well. I’ll definitely be hoping it’s a draw.”
Symons is back in the UK after an 18-month spell as assistant boss to Chris Coleman at Atromitos ended due to cost-cutting at the Greek club.

The 52-year-old said: “The owner was trying to sell the club so there were budget cutbacks. I had a brilliant time. When we went to Greece, the team looked doomed but we kept them up.
Then we built and just missed out on the play-offs last season. It was a great experience. Athens was brilliant, the food, climate, people and culture was fantastic.
“I saw one of the most bizarre things in my football life. We played AEK Athens at home and the game was called off during the warm up because the crossbar was 1cm too short!
“Their goalkeeper coach was touching the crossbar and shaking his head before the officials came out with their tape measures.

Alan Shearer tried to introduce forbidden rule at Newcastle when he took over as manager – and felt dressing room’s fury

The 53-year-old was Newcastle’s fourth manager in the 2008-09 season – with the Englishman admitting that there were major problems at the club before his arrival.
He rang every member of the team, as well as the staff, on his very first day asking what time everyone had to show up to training.
However, Shearer said two players were late as well as a member of staff.
After attempting to deal with the issue in private one of the two players was late again.

The England legend then decided to take matters into his own hands, as he told the The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards.
He said: “I was thinking, ‘here’s my first test. Do I set a bar here and do I try and fine the players or do I try and discipline or just have a quiet word and don’t make a scene on your very first day’.
“There was probably a culture there that it was alright for players to come in late.
“If that’s the case, you are never going to be successful.

“No word of a lie, one of the players, same player, was late the next morning as well. So I’m thinking ‘f***ing hell, this is unbelievable.”
Attempting to stamp his authority on the matter, Shearer tried to put in a fining system.
The former Newcastle star revealed that the players fumed at him for trying to introduce it.
He continued: “Then I tried to put a fine system in, which I thought ‘if I don’t do this, this is going to continue to happen’.
“But to put a fine system, you have to print it out on a piece of paper.
“So what I tried to do, I said the first time you are late, it’s 10 per cent of your wages, the second time you are late, it’s 20 per cent, and the third time it’s 50 per cent’.
“Within two minutes of it hitting the dressing room floor, I had the players committee knock on my door saying ‘this is unacceptable’.
“You know what I said? I said ‘just don’t be f****ing late then’.”

Shearer later stated that the fining system was never put in place as the Professional Footballers’ Association wouldn’t allow it.
The Magpies would go on to get relegated that season – with the club opting against offering the Englishman a full-time role. More

Why are Man Utd playing Burnley at 8pm TONIGHT?

MANCHESTER UNITED face Burnley in later than usual kick-off time TONIGHT – and it could be an advantage for the Red Devils. The Red Devils will be determined to bounce back from their midweek Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

And it meant that United have now suffered three consecutive losses in all competitions.
But Erik ten Hag’s men will feel confident that they can turn things around against a Burnley side who are yet to win a Premier League match this season.
Furthermore, the 8pm kick-off time could also go in United’s favour.
Why is Man Utd playing Burnley at 8pm?
Manchester United vs Burnley’s kick-off time has been rescheduled for TNT Sports television purposes.
    Read more on Man Utd
The Premier League agreed last season that clubs playing in Europe on Wednesday nights will not play in the early weekend fixture.
And Sky Sports will be showing Brentford’s encounter against Everton in their 5:30pm slot.
This means that TNT could only show United’s trip to Turf Moor at 8pm as the Red Devils cannot play in the usual 12:30pm slot.
    What has been said?
Andrew Georgiou, President of Sports at Discovery confirmed their agreement with the Premier League.
    Most read in Football
Georgiou told the Times: “We are happy to have the 12.30 kick-off that we purchased as part of the package but the reality is the clubs and the league have agreed that if there is a club playing in the Champions League on a Wednesday night they cannot play in the 12.30pm Saturday kick-off.
“At 12.30pm on the Saturday, it’s perfect for us, it’s our time slot. Unfortunately the Premier League and the clubs have agreed that if that happens it can’t start at 12.30pm so we have to find another slot.
“I don’t think we can be asked to change our picks. What we have to do is find out the best time-slot to accommodate the club’s needs and our needs in terms of which matches we pick.
“I don’t think we should be expected to change our picks on the basis of who is playing on a Wednesday night.”
How can I watch Man Utd’s match against Burnley?

Burnley vs Manchester United will be broadcast LIVE on TNT Sports 1
Coverage is expected to commence from 7pm BST – a whole hour before kick-off.
Fans can also stream the entire match live on BT.com
Alternatively, follow SunSport’s blog for minute-by-minute coverage including pre-match and post-match reaction. More

Pochettino tells Chelsea star what he must to do be ‘as good as Vinicius Jr’ as he faces ban after just FIVE games

MAURICIO POCHETTINO does not want to see the Jackson 5 this weekend.Chelsea’s hot-headed striker Nicolas Jackson is on four bookings — three for dissent and one for arguing with the opposition — so  is just a caution away from a ban when he faces Aston Villa on Sunday.

Boss Pochettino reckons back-chat Jacko could become as good as Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr — if he curbs his lip.
He, along with midfielder Enzo Fernandez, even pulled Jackson to one side, to warn that his behaviour is threatening the team’s fragile morale.
Poch revealed: “I talked to him today. We were talking about that. We had a meeting with him and Enzo.
“I said ‘come on, for a striker to have four yellow cards, to protest, to talk with the referee. You need to get some yellow cards for different actions not because of that’.

“It’s so easy, so cheap. He could put the team in a really difficult situation.
“He understood. But Jackson is 22, he is young, he needs to learn, to improve.
“He is going to be a fantastic player, but he needs time.
“We were talking about players and I like to make similarities with another club. Jackson is a fantastic player but he needs to be relaxed in front of goal.

“Remember, Vinicius arrived and only after three seasons or two seasons and a half and started to perform.
“Always we forget we are talking about young players. Maybe it’s because it’s his normal behaviour on the pitch, something he has to improve. This  season they changed the rules.”
Frustrated Jackson has scored only one Prem goal since his £30million move from Villarreal in the summer.
Poch added: “He came from Spain where it’s a different relationship with the referees. He needs to be clever, not to protest to the referees.
“I hope on Sunday we are talking about him being clever — not that his first action is a yellow card!”
Chelsea are languishing in 14th but Pochettino said: “You can blame me or blame us and you can talk about tactics but they need time.
“There’s no doubt we have amazing talent but they need time to settle and, for sure, they will start to perform in the way we expect.”
Midfielder Moises Caicedo, who joined in a British record £115m deal this summer, has had a knee injury but will be assessed in training tomorrow before Pochettino decides if he can feature.

But Ten Hag has also claimed his shuffled Old Trafford squad and staff are ‘united’ — despite Jadon Sancho being kept out of the pack.
On United’s defending, the Dutch boss said: “It’s about 11 players who do their job.
“I  always tell my players we attack with 11 and defend with 11.
“When one or two are not doing their job, it’s like a pack of cards. So that is not only one or two players.”

Asked if he knew why a team that had the most clean sheets in the league last season, 17, is now not working for each other, Ten Hag replied: “No.
“When you are in a period like we are in, you are asking yourself these questions. My job is to get them to do the job.
“We have shown that we can do it.
“Last year we had the most clean sheets in the Premier League because we defended very well as a team. We have to get back to those standards.

“I am pushing the team and demanding from the team. So why are they not doing it?
“I try to find out,  I try to get and give  solutions and try to motivate the players to do the job.”
Sancho remains out in the cold for refusing to apologise to Ten Hag for his  social media post hitting back at claims that he was not working hard enough in training.
Despite this, Ten Hag yesterday claimed everyone at the club is pulling in the same direction.
He said: “It’s my second year. I know it’s not always going up, you will have your gaps and you get stronger from it as long as you stay together, that’s what we’re doing.
“The dressing room, staff, all the staff, coaches, medical, everyone is united.”
Ten Hag has vowed to do everything he can to get to the bottom of United’s latest slump as they prepare for a trip to Burnley this weekend.
He said: “As a manager you have many tools and I make sure I use them.

He told talkSPORT, Rashford was running ‘like he has a fridge on his back’.

Chelsea had a £26million deadline-day bid rejected for the two-footed teen who already has one two full caps
However, the Evening Standard reckon he would only have stepped straight into Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad had wideman Ian Maatsen or midfielder Conor Gallagher been sold.

Doak, 17, delivered a lively performance on Liverpool’s right flank yesterday in what was the Scotsman’s full debut.
He led the charge as soon as LASK took a stunning lead through Florian Flecker – and Doak was inches away from an immediate response.
After the hammer blow of the opener, the teen scampered up the wing and flashed a strike across goal from an acute angle.
And Klopp has said he is keen for his squad to utilise the youngster more often.

He said: “If we would have used Ben Doak a little bit more often, given him the ball, I think he would have got the ball more times on the touchline and passed the ball inside or whatever.”
Doak has made six appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s team – but all from the bench.

Vincent Kompany denied Man Utd transfer as Sir Alex Ferguson became ‘smitten’ with little-known star on scouting mission

VINCENT KOMPANY missed out on a transfer to Manchester United because Sir Alex Ferguson became “smitten” with a little-known star. The Belgian former defender, 37, became a hero across town at Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouting mission for the Belgian defender was distractedCredit: PA
In 11 years at the Etihad, Kompany won ten major honours including four Premier League titles to etch his name into the club’s folklore and cement his legendary status.
But it could have been very different indeed.
That is because Ferguson had identified Komapany as a transfer target all the way back in 2004 when he was still at Anderlecht, four years before his £7million move to City.
A list of wanted defenders, published in Fergie’s Leading book, showed Kompany’s name alongside Gabriel Heinze, Gerard Pique and Philippe Mexes.

Heinze and Pique both joined while Mexes snubbed United to go to Roma instead.
However, a swoop for Kompany collapsed when Ferguson got distracted on a scouting mission.
The legendary Old Trafford boss said in 2018: “When I went to the Celtic vs Anderlecht Champions League tie in Glasgow in November 2003, it was to watch the Belgian defender Vincent Kompany.
“However, my attention soon gravitated to Celtic’s energetic young midfielder, slight of stature but with an assured, calm way about him.

“What I witnessed was a player with a tremendous set of midfield fundamentals — his movement off the ball, his penetration of the Anderlecht midfield.
“I came away smitten by his performance, not least the timing of his runs.
“Leaving Parkhead I was totally determined to get Liam Miller to Manchester United.”
Irishman Miller completed a switch to United in the summer of 2004 and made 22 appearances, including nine in the Premier League.
He headed to Leeds on loan in 2005, though, before a journeyman career in England, Scotland and Australia.
Miller played for hometown club Cork City in 2015 and spent the final year of his playing days at Wilmington Hammerheads in 2016.
Tragically, the former midfielder died in February 2018, four days before his 37th birthday, after receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Kompany, meanwhile, stayed with Anderlecht for another two years and then signed for Hamburg.
The 89-cap ace, who faces United as Burnley manager on Saturday, said in 2015: “United asked about me, but I had other priorities at the time.
“I was studying for my A-levels and my mother made me finish my education before I could concentrate on football.
