Spurs vs Liverpool would have to be REPLAYED if Hooper overturned VAR blunder… with ref told of gaffe moments too late

REF Simon Hooper was told that Luis Diaz’ goal against Spurs should have been allowed. But the information from blunder-VAR Darren England came TOO LATE for Hooper to reverse his decision and award the goal.

PGMOL chiefs have conceded that England errantly told Hooper “check complete” in the mistaken belief that Diaz had not been flagged offside.
Hooper then restarted play with a Tottenham free-kick.
It was only when the ball next went out of play, for a throw-in to Liverpool, that Hooper was informed of the cock-up that cost Jurgen Klopp’s side a legitimate goal.
However, that meant there was nothing Hooper could do under the International FA Board protocols on VAR use.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
The protocols state: “If play has stopped and been restarted, the referee may not undertake a ‘review’ except for a case of mistaken identity or for a potential sending-off offence relating to violent conduct, spitting, biting or extremely offensive, insulting and/or abusive action(s).”
That does not extend to going back to a flawed offside decision, as in this case.
And while a number of Liverpool fans in particular are complaining about Manchester United being awarded a match-winning penalty after the full-time whistle in their game at Brighton two seasons ago, the situation there was very different.
Referee Chris Kavanagh failed to spot Neal Maupay clearly handling off the line nand had signalled the end of the game.

But the offence was seen by the VAR – ironically Hooper – and, as play had not restarted, Kavanagh rightly allowed added time for the penalty to be converted by Bruno Fernandes.
On Saturday, had Hooper “gone back” to the decision and awarded the goal, it would have been a fundamental breach of the protocols and the Laws of the Game.
It would have led to a Spurs protest and – as a blatant violation of the Laws – would have been likely to see the FA forced to agree with the Premier League that the match would be declared null and void and had to be replayed. More

The goal came with Arsenal 2-0 up in the game.
Vice-captain Martin Odegaard had already converted from the spot in the first-half and it looked as though it would be him or Gabriel Jesus to take the second penalty.
Cameras picked up a conversation between Odegaard and Jesus which showed the Gunners captain appearing to say Havertz should take the pen.
Havertz then duly converted as he sent the Bournemouth keeper Neto the wrong way.

It was clear to see what it meant to Havertz and his team-mates as virtually the whole team ran up to join in with his celebrations after he netted his first goal in a Gunners shirt.
Arsenal fans on Twitter loved the moment, with one tweeting: “If this doesn’t make you proud to be a gooner…. I think Jesus was meant to take it. Ø convincing him to give it to Kai. Jesus approves with a nod to Kai. Helping a friend out. Look how happy they are and how relieved he is.”
In the replies to the video one fan said: “Tears in my eyes.”
Another wrote: “I’m just so glad, for him, the team and especially the captain, that he scored. Imagine the meltdown if he hadn’t.”

While a fourth wrote: “I love this club . What a captain!!!!!”
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke of his delight at his team allowing Havertz to take the penalty and said after the game: “I love to be part of a team that shows the human qualities that they have show, that empathy towards a player that has some question marks to resolve externally… they won me even more.
“I’m thankful to our supporters as they sang his name. Kai deserves that”.
Arsenal went on to win the game comfortably 4-0, with goals from Saka, Odegaard, Havertz and White.
The Gunners are now up to third in the Premier League table on 17 points and are just one point behind leaders Manchester City. More

Premier League set to be shown on new channel from 2025 – while current broadcaster could AXE their football coverage

PREMIER LEAGUE fixtures could be shown on DAZN from 2025, according to reports.Meanwhile, current broadcaster Amazon are said to be ready to end their football coverage.
Premier League chiefs are planning a revamp to the way TV rights are sold and DAZN could enter the race to show the actionCredit: Rex
Premier League TV rights for 2025 to 2029 are set to go on sale soon.
Streaming giants DAZN will be in the bidding this time but it is unclear if they will be able to match Sky and TNT offers.
However, the Mail also claim that Amazon are considering pulling out of showing football.
They have been involved in Prem coverage since 2019 and have shown 20 games per season in a three-year deal worth £90m, or £1.5m each game.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
But their deal finishes at the end of the 2024/25 season and the report claims they are not expected to continue their interest.
This is amid Premier League chiefs planning a reshape to the way they sell TV rights to make more money.
In the next batch of sales they hope to make £4bn-a-year, an increase from the current £3.47bn.
A document will soon be reportedly sent to channels informing them of the supposed changes.

Four-year deals that run from 2025 to 2029 will be on offer, as opposed to the three-year contracts currently in place.
There is currently 200 games on TV per season and the amount is set to rise to between 250 and 270.
Despite the increase in matches for fans to watch, there will be fewer packages for channels to bid for with five set to be available rather than seven.
The extra games per package means all broadcasters will be able to show viewers a more “substantial offering”.
There could also allegedly be an impact on kick-off times.
Additional Friday night, Saturday lunchtime and evening, as well as Monday night games are set to be available for channels to acquire.
There could also supposedly be three slots for matches on Sundays but not necessarily a late evening position previously discussed.
Sky currently pay £9.8m for each game they show with TNT less at £6.25m. More

Sancho, holding a mobile phone and cap in his hand, smiled for the camera and looked to have made the young fan’s day by stopping for the pic.
The picture appears to have been taken yesterday, meaning Sancho would have been at the training ground while United were playing out their 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Sancho has not played for the Red Devils since their win over Nottingham Forest on August 26.
He was dropped from the squad completely for their visit to Arsenal a week later before being publicly criticised by Ten Hag.

The former Borussia Dortmund star then hit back on social media before later deleting his post.
A late move to the Saudi Pro League was then floated but a transfer failed to materialise before their deadline.
Sancho has since been exiled from the United first-team and made to train on his own.
He has also been banned from all first-team areas at the training ground, including the club canteen.

Ten Hag was again asked about Sancho’s situation as he spoke ahead of United’s clash with Palace yesterday and made no secret in showing he is tired of the situation.
Asked about the chances of Sancho resurrecting his United career, Ten Hag shook his head and replied: “Many of you ask me so often this question and I have said everything.”
When asked how long the situation can continue for, Ten Hag said: “What I said, I have said everything.”
It looks as though the only resolution to the saga will be a January transfer for the 23-year-old. More

However, his career started in different surroundings after he left school.
The Hackney-born businessman worked at a greengrocers and had a job within the civil service before setting up his first company.
He would get his start after using his savings to buy a van, selling electricals out of the back of it.
By the time he was 21, Sugar had set up his own firm, Amstrad, and was selling turntable covers, car radios and other electrical items.

Amstrad’s launch of their PC in 1984 boosted their net worth to a staggering £1.2billion.
The 1987 stock market crash and a rise in competitors impacted the firm, though, and they were ultimately sold to BSkyB in 2007 for £125million.
Before then, though, Sugar spent a decade as Spurs’ chairman and owner.
Alongside Terry Venables, he initially invested £3.25million each in 1991 before increasing his stake to £8million to become the majority shareholder.

Sugar would remain at the helm at White Hart Lane until he sold his stake to current owners ENIC International for £47million in 2001.
During his ownership, Spurs secured a string of top-half finishes, with their highest coming in 1996 as they finished seventh in the Premier League.
He also oversaw a League Cup triumph in 1999, ending an eight-year wait for silverware.

Spurs also played in Europe on three separate occasions with Sugar as owner.
Their best performance came during the first campaign after his takeover in 1991/92.
Managed by Peter Shreeves, Spurs reached the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup before losing on aggregate to Feyenoord.
Nowadays, Sugar is best known for his role on hit BBC show The Apprentice.
The 76-year-old has been the central figure on the show since its inception in 2005, with candidates competing to become his latest business partner.
On the show, Sugar is joined on “The Board” by West Ham vice-chairperson Karren Brady and former winner Tim Campbell. More

Furious Erik ten Hag slams Man Utd flops for ‘really poor’ Crystal Palace defeat and bemoans ‘bad start to the season’

A FURIOUS Erik Ten Hag has laid into his players after yesterday’s 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The result was United’s second successive defeat at home and sees them open the season with four Premier League defeats from their first seven games played.

Ten Hag has been left wanting more from his teamCredit: Getty
Joachim Andersen’s 25 minute volley was enough to defeat The Red Devils with United never really making enough clear-cut chances to get back into the game.
Speaking to Match of The Day after the game, Ten Hag said: “It’s a bad start to the season.
“We have to catch up. We have to do better. This is not good enough.
“These players can do better in the final part [of the pitch].

“I’m very disappointed. If you concede three chances and one is in after bad defending….
“Our decisions on the ball were really poor. We often got into good positions but we were not clinical enough.
“The decision making was not good enough. The final pass, extra pass, shot or whatever…”
United were booed off by their fans at full-time and their record of four league defeats from an opening seven games is their worst return since 1989.

And Ten Hag admitted his fans’ boos were warranted.
He said: “I understand. We played at home and we play Crystal Palace we have to win and with all respect. I know every game in the Premier League is difficult, you have to play your best but I understand fans expect a win and we didn’t win, we lost.”
On the team’s record of four defeats from their opening seven he admitted his side cannot afford to waste any time as they look to find consistency, saying: “Of course, that is the concern [that this could be the pattern for United’s season] and we have to be more consistent.
“So there is not a demand for Man United; the demand is that we get a row of wins and we have to do better than we do now.
“I can give you reasons (for the defeat) but you will explain it as an excuse and there are no excuses. We have to win.”
United return to home action in two days when they take on Galatasaray in the Champions League.
But unfortunately for Ten Hag it is not just on-field issues that are plaguing him at the moment.
Winger Antony will return to full training tomorrow but his future is uncertain amid investigations into his alleged assault of ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.

And Jadon Sancho remains exiled from the squad after refusing to apologise to Ten Hag for his social media comments in which he accused the manager of making him a “scapegoat”.
There is also the ongoing uncertainty surrounding United’s takeover which does not appear any closer to a resolution since the club was first put up for sale by the Glazers in November last year. More

Former Chelsea target makes Prem clubs who snubbed him eat their words with stunning goal spree in Germany

SERHOU GUIRASSY’S sensational form in Germany has opened up old wounds among his Premier League admirers. The Stuttgart striker, 27, wanted to play in England’s top flight.

And Frank Lampard was eyeing up a move for him while Everton boss.
Lamps had been keen on Guirassy after seeing him play for French outfit Rennes while he was in charge at Chelsea.
But Toffees bigwigs overruled him and they ended up signing Neal Maupay from Brighton for £15million in August 2022.
That deal was a total disaster as the Frenchman managed only one goal last season before he was loaned out to former club Brentford last month.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Burnley considered taking Guinea international Guirassy on loan in the 2021-22 season.
They signed Wout Weghorst instead in January last year — and he scored just twice as they went down after boss Sean Dyche was sacked.
West Ham, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United also tried and failed for Guirassy earlier in his career when he was at French side Amiens.
And Chelsea offered him a trial when he was looking to leave Amiens in 2020.

At 27, it’s fair to say that Guirassy has been a late bloomer in modern football terms.
Prior to this season he has never scored more than 11 goals in a league season.
But after starting this season in blistering form, he has managed 10 goals and one assist in just six league appearances for Stuttgart.
Stuttgart’s 2-0 victory against FC Koln yesterday was the first time Guirassy failed to register a goal or an assist in a game so far this season.
His ten goals in his first five games saw him match Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record of being on double figures after five.
And when Lewandowski set that record, he went on to score 41 Bundesliga goals across the season – the most ever in a single campaign.
Guirassy’s goals has seen Stuttgart start remarkably as they sit in second behind fellow surprise packages Bayer Leverkusen in first.
It’s a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for a club that only stayed in Germany’s top division last season after winning a relegation play off against Bundesliga II side Hamburg.
If Guirassy’s goals continue, they’ll be dreaming of Champions League football next year and his admirers in the Premier League may have to pay big money if they look to reignite their interest in the Guinea international. More

Jurgen Klopp’s explosive comments in full after Liverpool hit by VAR shambles as boss slams ‘most unfair’ game ever

JURGEN KLOPP has admitted it is “tough” to deal with the VAR shambles as he slammed three decisions in Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham.Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off for the Reds with Klopp claiming both were unfairly dismissed.

Jurgen Klopp fumed at several decisions during and after the matchCredit: Reuters
But the Liverpool boss was most aggrieved with the decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s first-half strike for offside, which would have put his side 1-0 up.
The PGMOL released an apology after the match admitting Diaz’s goal should have stood, blaming a “significant human error”.
SunSport understands VAR Darren England clearly saw Diaz was ONSIDE but forgot what the on-field decision was.
He then accidentally gave the “check complete” signal believing he was AWARDING Diaz’s goal when, in fact, he was allowing play to continue at 0-0.

When Klopp was asked about the incident before learning of the PGMOL’s apology, he said: “When we saw it, we thought ‘that’s not offside’. They drew the lines wrong.
“It is so tough to deal with it. I’m now relatively calm, and during the game we were really calm. Your heart rate is 160-180… and you see that, and the red card and the next red card. It’s difficult.”
He also criticised Diogo Jota’s dismissal and felt his side’s style of play did not warrant two red cards.
He added: “How can Jota in this game go off the pitch with two yellow cards, the first he barely touched him and for sure not his fault.

“That is what is the problem. We have so many things. When did you last hear a game with 11 v 9? And we were close to 11v 8! There were no horrible fouls.
“We were not kicking players or whatever. The boys made a super intense game of it, it is crazy how hard we fought. In the end we got nothing. The result is gone but the performance will stay with me forever. I loved our attitude and our desire.
“They didn’t do it on purpose, I know that, but mistakes still happen. If we want to talk about it do it properly and not with creating headlines with emotional managers.”
And the irate German was quick to dismiss the PGMOL’s eventual apology – insisting it does not help his side.
He told a press conference: “Who does that help? We had that situation in the Man Utd game.
Luis Diaz was wrongly deemed offside before scoring at Tottenham and VAR failed to intervene
“Did Wolves get the points for it? We won’t get the points for it.
“We all thought that when VAR came in it would make things easier.”
Klopp felt just as strongly about the call to show Jones a red card for his tackle on Yves Bissouma.
He claimed it was not a bad tackle, with Gary Neville also suggesting Jones was unfortunate to see red as he did not intend to slip over the ball.
Klopp added: “I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.

“We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle.
“It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.” More
