Fulham 3 Sheff Utd 1: Freak own goal helps Cottagers to three points but match overshadowed by Basham horror injury

TOM CAIRNEY piled on the misery for Sheffield United with a jammy winner against the sad backdrop of a horror injury to Chris Basham.United’s long-serving defender suffered a suspected leg break in the first half when his left foot buckled while attempting a cross into the Fulham box.

Veteran Basham, 35, immediately went to ground clutching the lower half of his left leg, clearly in agony and players nearby could not look as the stricken star lay motionless on the ground.
He was eventually carried off the pitch into a waiting ambulance and play was halted for 15 minutes.
But the brave centre half still managed to raise one of his thumbs in salute as both sets of fans gave him a standing ovation.
The game was also a tough debut for rookie ref Sam Barrott making his Premier League bow.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
Barrott, 28, has been fast-tracked into the top flight and won’t forget his first game at this level with a serious injury and two own goals on a dramatic afternoon.
Despite the loss of a key player United held out until eight minutes into the second half before Fulham took the lead through Bobby De Cordova Reid.
A neat combination between midfielders Paulhinha and Andreas Perreira resulted in De Cordova Reid racing clear and slotting a shot underneath keeper Wes Foderingham.
The visitors’ luck seemed to change when Blades sub Yasser Larouci’s cross struck Fulham defender Timothy Castagne’s knee.

The deflection caught Fulham left back Antonee Robinson off guard and the ball rebounded off his knee and in for United to equalise in the 67th minute.
Fulham captain Cairney came off the bench and was lucky when his left foot chip from outside the box hit the bar and then unfortunate keeper Foderingham’s head before crossing the line – meaning the goal is credited to him.
Willian made it 3-1 two minutes into the eight of added time.
The victory gets Fulham back on track after a draw at Crystal Palace and home defeat by Chelsea on Monday.
United remain rooted at the foot of the table with only a point and no clean sheets in eight Premier League games following promotion last season. More

Man Utd ratings: McTominay saves the day with incredible Old Trafford late show but Onana has another howler

THE LATE LATE SHOW from Scott McTominay spared Erik ten Hag’s blushes as Man United came out on top against Brentford.McTominay came off the bench to cancel out Mathias Jensen’s first half goal with two of his own in added time.
McTominay’s late header was enough to get United all three pointsCredit: Reuters
It was a quick double for the super subCredit: Reuters
The late goals could yet be a turning point in this seasonCredit: Reuters
Scott McTominay had two goals from just five touches of the ball
And here are the United players rated in a game that could prove pivotal in their season.
    ANDRE ONANA -2
How on earth did Inter Milan get to the Champions League final with this bloke in nets? Another error as he let a shot slide through his hand
    DIOGO DALOT – 6
Did well to stop Brentford from getting a second when he sensed danger and retreated to the goalline to whack Christian Norgaard’s header clear.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
Credit to the former captain for being fit, ready and available after the way he has been treated. Solid enough performance. 6.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
    JONNY EVANS – 7
The Northern Irishman showed no rustiness in his first start back at United when he was man of the match at Burnley and looked similarly assured here. It was his first start at Old Trafford since February 2015.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 5
Asked to play at right back as the back four was reshuffled. Gave the final ball away for Brentford’s goal and finally subbed as United went chasing an equaliser.
    CASEMIRO – 2
There is one thing for having belief in your own ability, but in Casemiro’s case this season it has led to him being far too sloppy. Gave the ball away twice for Brentford’s goal. Hooked at half-time.
    SOFYAN AMRABAT- 4
Shifted out of the left-back position which he clearly cannot play in. Mind you he was hardly a world beater in midfielder on this occasion.

    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
Never as effective on the right as he is in the middle but always wanting and using the ball. Had a good effort well saved in the second-half.
    MASON MOUNT – 5
What does he do, where does he play, why did they buy him? The questions were swirling round again after another underwhelming performance.
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 4
    Rashford disappointed againCredit: Getty
His place was in doubt for this game. That player who scored 30 goals last season needs to be found again. Subbed for the third game running.
    RASMUS HOJLUND – 6
The Dane’s double against Galatasaray showed that if you give him the chances he will take them. Unfortunately, hardly any are being created for him.
     SUBS
CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN (for Casemiro 45): On to try and add a bit more creation but it didn’t happen. 5.
ANTONY (for Mount 62): Brought on to give an injection of pace and trickery but apart from a customary cut in and shot wide there was little. 5.
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (for Rashford 62): Usually makes an impression late in games. Not on this occasion. 5.
ANTHONY MARTIAL (for Lindelof 71): Asked to change the game. Not surprisingly he didn’t. His slight touch in an offside position initially denied McTominay before the equaliser came. 5.
SCOTT MCTOMINAY (for Amrabat 87): Unbelievable! Came on late and gave the team an extra push. Grabbed two goals in injury time for. another incredible Old Trafford late show. 9. More

Chelsea ratings: Sterling runs the show in huge away win but Broja struggles to make an impact

CHELSEA picked up a stunning 4-1 win against Burnley at Turf Moor in what was their best performance of the season.Raheem Sterling led the Blues to their second successive victory in the Premier League for the first time in the campaign.

The Clarets stunned the West Londoners on 15 minutes when 18-year-old Wilson Odobert became their youngest ever Prem scorer.
But Sterling then drove the ball down the left and his cross took a deflection off Ameen Al-Dakhil who registered an own-goal three minutes before half-time.
The forward, who was left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, dominated down the left in the second half as he was fouled in the area by Vitinho – Cole Palmer took on the penalty and scored his first ever Chelsea goal in the 50th minute.
Sterling finally got his goal 15 minutes later after picking up a lovely assist by Conor Gallagher and the ex-Manchester City star’s run down the wing led to a stunning ball to Palmer on the far side before the youngster set Nicolas Jackson up for the fourth.

But who else stood out and who struggled? SunSport’s Kostas Lianos rates each Chelsea player:
    ROBERT SANCHEZ – 6
Much better performance by the Chelsea goalkeeper who can’t take the blame for Wilson Odobert’s opener. Only had to make two big saves after the Burnley goal.
    AXEL DISASI – 6
A composed performance from the defender after a nervy start at Turf Moor. Didn’t struggle after the Odobert’s goal.
    THIAGO SILVA – 7
Just like Disasi and Sanchez, Thiago Silva didn’t really had reason to worry after Burnley’s opener. A rock in the centre of defence and was unlucky to pick up a very strict yellow card.
    Most read in Football
    LEVI COLWILL – 6
The centre-back played at left-back after Ben Chilwell’s latest injury and had some big shoes to fill. Struggled a lot in the first half but pulled it together in the second.
    MARC CUCURELLA – 6
The left-back started at right-back once more amid Mauricio Pochettino’s injury crisis. Just like Colwill, Marc Cucurella also struggled in the first half as he is left-footed. But he also regained composure in the second half.
    CONOR GALLAGHER – 7
A good performance in the midfield trio alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Conor Gallagher also set Raheem Sterling’s goal up with a wonderful ball that sealed the three points.
    MOISES CAICEDO – 7
Moises Caicedo showed flashes of why Chelsea splashed a Premier League record £115million to sign him in the summer. Strong performance in midfield and played some good balls to release forwards down the wings.

    ENZO FERNANDEZ – 6
A satisfying performance in midfield but Enzo Fernandez had a few wrong passes. Did well to keep Burnley’s forwards at bay though.
    RAHEEM STERLING – 9
A stunning performance by Sterling who caused Ameen Al-Dakhil’s own goal, got the penalty, scored a goal and played a critical role in Nicolas Jackson’s winner. Absolutely bossed the left wing, are you watching Gareth Southgate?
    ARMANDO BROJA – 5
Completely absent in the first half, barely got the ball and failed to create any chances. Pochetino made the right decision to replace him with Jackson, who added some much needed spark up front.
    COLE PALMER – 8
Got his first ever Chelsea AND Premier League goal after another impressive display. Palmer and Sterling made a strong claim to cover the wings throughout the season.

    SUBS:
NICOLAS JACKSON (ON FOR BROJA, 46′) – 7
Jackson added some much needed spark up front after a toothless performance by Armando Broja in the first half. Showed great composure in his goal as he had the vision to hold on to the ball before firing past James Trafford.

MYKHAILO MUDRYK (ON FOR RAHEEM STERLING, 83′) – 6
Couldn’t replicate Sterling’s stunning performance in the wings, but he had big shoes to fill. Plus he came on late, so not much time to make an impact.
IAN MAATSEN (ON FOR COLE PALMER, 86′) – 6
Didn’t have time to leave his mark. More

Burnley 1 Chelsea 4: Sterling shows Southgate what he’s missing as Blues come from behind to record second straight win

GARETH SOUTHGATE should not delete Raheem Sterling’s phone number from his contacts book just yet.The Chelsea wide man, 28, has again been left out of the England squad for this week’s games with Australia and Italy.
Raheem Sterling celebrates his goal at Turf MoorCredit: AFP
Chelsea dominated in their win at Burnley
Chelsea were on top for most of the game
In fact he has not played for the Three Lions since the World Cup quarter final defeat to France 10 months ago.
Southgate said on Thursday he feels there are forwards who are playing better than the former Manchester City man right now.
If the national team boss is looking for a response from Sterling then he certainly got one here.
He only got his chance because Mykhailo Mudryk was not fit enough to start – but took it with both hands.
When it looked like it could be another worrying day for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, it was Sterling who dragged them back from the brink.
He forced an own goal, won a penalty, scored one himself and even had a hand in the fourth as the visitors eventually won at a canter.
And there can be no doubt if he plays like this then it won’t be long before he adds to his 82 England caps.
He left the field eight minutes from time to a standing ovation from the visiting fans – and fully deserved it.
Those who made the journey from West London recognised the £47 million ace had got them out of a hole here.
He looked in the mood early on as he took a pass from Cole Palmer – who also caught the eye – and cut in before curling a shot inches past the post.
But then a Burnley side – who had lost all four of their games at Turf Moor since returning to the Prem – took control.
Wilson Odobert had already given makeshift right-back Marc Cucurella a bit to think about so it was no surprise when the opener arrived down that side.
Lyle Foster weaved into the box and played in the French teen who steered a low shot past Robert Sanchez.
It was some way to mark his full Prem debut for the 18-year-old.
Credit to Foster too – he stayed on his feet when he could have gone down under a foul from Thiago Silva.
Odobert almost created a second as he once again had Cucurella twisting and turning before lifting a cross to the back post.
Mike Tresor looked to be in but could not direct his effort on goal under pressure from a defender and the chance was gone.
Meanwhile Cucurella was having a ‘mare and was lucky he did not connect with Odobert as he skipped past him – but got a yellow card anyway.
Chelsea were second best at that point but Enzo Fernandez found space at the back post but Cullen got back and timed his tackle perfectly to clear.
Sterling found went past his man and fired a low shot that was smothered at his near post by James Trafford.
The England winger was looking his team’s main threat and the equaliser arrived thanks to more good work from his down the left.
His cross into the box flicked off Ameen Al Dakhil and looped over Trafford – no wonder the home fans groaned.
It was the bit of luck that Pochettino needed as they had been second best since falling behind.
If he said a little prayer while his team was second best then they were certainly answered.
    Ameen to that.
Yet the visitors clearly felt ref Stuart Attwell had done them no favours – both Thiago Silva and Poch confronted him as he made his way off at half-time.
Poor old Al Dakhil was replaced by Dara O’Shea at half-time after his slice of bad luck but Chelsea were now on the front foot.
And their extra bit of quality took the game away from the home side.
Sterling was caught by the knee of Vitinho right on the line of the penalty area and the VAR confirmed it was just inside.
Palmer had to wait an age for the checks but kept his composure to send Trafford the wrong way from the spot.
The England Under 21 ace has impressed since his surprise £40 million move from Manchester City and now he has a goal to his name.
Burnley had lost their way either side of the break but almost hit straight back as
Odobert curled a vicious 25 yard effort that was smartly tipped over by Sanchez.
But their hopes of getting back in it were snuffed out as sub Aaron Ramsey was caught out midway through the second half.
Moises Caicedo and Connor Gallagher combined to send Sterling clear down the left.
He looked full of confidence as he thumped a low shot into the far corner and after a VAR check the goal stood.
And Sterling was involved yet again as number arrived 10 minutes later – sending over a cross from the left again.
Palmer could have gone for goal himself but instead laid it off for sub Nicolas Jackson who spun and finished neatly.
Three wins in a row for Chelsea now – and Poch’s Stamford Bridge reign finally has lift off.
