Brighton 2 Liverpool 2: Lewis Dunk rescues point after Salah brace in Reds’ first Premier League game since VAR outrage

JURGEN KLOPP could not blame VAR on his eighth anniversary as Liverpool boss as the Reds blew their chance of forgetting their misery at Spurs.Lewis Dunk grabbed a deserved equaliser for Brighton 12 minutes from time in an entertaining battle after Mo Salah scored twice before half-time.

Ivory Coast midfielder Simon Adringra, impressive in only his third start, put Brighton ahead only for Liverpool star Salah to stun the home team with his double inside six minutes.
Salah’s second was a penalty after Pascal Gross pulled the shirt of Dominik Szoboszlai and despite some Liverpool player’s wanting a red card,  VAR operator Christopher Kavanagh felt Szoboszlai was not moving towards goal.
Just eight days earlier, Luis Diaz’s goal at Tottenham was incorrectly ruled out and maybe, that match in north London with nine men took something out of Klopp’s team psychologically.
They were certainly not at their best on the south coast.

Equally, you have to give yet more credit to Brighton. They are still adjusting to life as a European club and impact in terms of wear and tear has not helped the club’s injury situation.
Incredibly, De Zerbi made six changes from the 6-1 hammering at Aston Villa including a first Premier League start for Carlos Baleba who looked as though he had been playing in his team’s midfield for ages.
And even more staggering is the fact this brought it to 50 changes in just seven top-flight matches.
Brighton had caused Liverpool a few early problems, particularly with their clever set-pieces, but they were handed a gift of a goal, even though Adingra delivered a fine finish.

Alexis Mac Allister, who left for Liverpool in a £52million summer deal, had been given a good reception from Brighton’s fans when his name was read out by the PA announcer.
But the home supporters were even happier when Mac Allister failed to anticipate a poor pass from Virgil van Dijk with Adingra seizing his opportunity.
He took a couple of touches and, spotting that Alisson was out of position, took a shot from 25 yards which the Brazilian keeper was unable to keep out.
Much to Klopp’s bemusement, Baleba marched unchallenged through the visiting defence and dragged a shot wide
Yet Liverpool scored with their first decent attack just before the break at a time when Brighton looked more likely to get a second.
Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz were given too much space in central midfield, Harvey Elliott allowed Darwin Nunez’s square ball to run to Salah and he dispatched a lot shot from 12 yards pat Bart Veb

Yet lucky to be level, Liverpool hit Brighton with a one-two from Salah.
They were caught out following a poor pass out from the back by keeper Bart Verbruggen and Gross pulled the shirt of Szoboszlai.
Although it was given for that offence, Baleba then fouled Diaz so Liverpool were going to get one either way.
Brighton needed to recover quickly following that disastrous end to the first half and Adingra was denied a leveller by a decent save from Alisson.
Ryan Gravenberch, a £34million arrival from Bayern Munich, replaced Elliott for the second half and proved why he has not been signed for goals.
Although he got one in the Europa League on Thursday against Union Saint- Gilloise, he somehow failed to score his first Premier League goal after firing Szoboszlai’s cross against the bar from a couple of yards.
An increasingly-frustrated De Zerbi was then booked for his protests after Brighton failed to forget a penalty. He was in the wrong, though, as Kaoru Mitoma’s shot lifted off van Dijk’s leg and then hit his arm.
But Brighton finally got their goal thanks to their captain fantastic.
Andy Robertson failed to block the free-kick by Solly March and with the rest of his team-mates expecting Alisson to come for the cross, Dunk stuck out a leg to score.

Wolves 1 Aston Villa 1: Pau Torres scores first Villains goal seconds after Hwang opener as rivals share derby draw

TEN MAN Wolves survived a late Villa onslaught to share the spoils at the end of a bad tempered West Midlands derby. But boy they lived dangerously as Ollie Watkins almost stole all three points for Villa when his header bounced off the base of Jose Sa’s post – in the 12th minute of stoppage time!

The Spaniard did well to convert beyond SaCredit: Getty
And the bad blood between this pair continued at the final whistle when Unai Emery and Gary O’Neil refused to shake hands, before Emery stormed up the tunnel.
Mario Lemina had already made the same journey following a red card for a second bookable offence when he tugged at Douglas Luiz’s shorts late on.
Hwang Hee-chan thought he had earned Wolves a precious win when he opened the scoring to become the first Wolves player since John Richards, to net in five home games on the spin, since 1973.
But Wolves lead only lasted two minutes before Pau Torres grabbed an equaliser for Villa.
Both of these Midlands rivals came into this derby on a high, brimming with confidence after a productive week.
Wolves returned to Molineux on the back of inflicting Manchester City’s first defeat of the season.
Villa meanwhile had a spring in their step after following up their 6-1 mauling of Brighton with a dramatic last gasp Euro win over Zrinjski.
However there was little quality on show during a feisty first half of thud and blunder derby football.

Villa started brightly enough and Pau Torres flashed an early header wide after Lucas Digne worked a short corner with Moussa Diaby.
Then John McGinn picked out Matty Cash as the full-back steamed in at Wolves back post to force a fine save from Jose Sa.
McGinn was beginning to pull the strings for Villa and Sa was relieved to see a blistering effort from the Scot fly inches wide.
Joao Goes then invited the Scot to have another go when he surrendered the ball cheaply but the Villa midfielder fired over from 22 yards.
McGinn then incensed the Wolves support by indulging in a spot of WWF with Craig Dawson at several Wolves corners.
However as the ball wasn’t in play as the pair wrestled with each other, there was little referee Rob Jones could do to deal with the battling pair other than constantly warn them.
Eventually the official did get his own back by booking Dawson for a foul on Ollie Watkins, swiftly followed by a card for McGinn for bringing down Pedro Neto.
It took Wolves 34 minutes to have their first decent attempt on goal when Hwang Hee-chan picked out Ait-Nouri at the near post.
Both sets of managers engaged in debate in a heated local derbyCredit: Getty
But the Algerian international shot wide of the far post and the left-back never made it out for the second half, after failing to recover from a head knock.
It was a scrappy affair although Ollie Watkins forced Sa into a fantastic save from his first time shot after McGinn had set the striker up, just after the break.
Hwang then received treatment for a nose-bleed caused by Douglas Luiz.
However he gained revenge with the goal which finally broke the deadlock after 53 minutes to finally light up this dour Midlands derby.
The South Korean forward actually began the move when he robbed Douglas Luiz in the middle of the park.
The ball was ushered out wide to Pedro Neto who left Pau Torres for dead before delivering a brilliant cross which deflected off Digne.
Hwang managed to steal in front of Ezri Konsa to force the ball beyond Martinez to the delight of the home fans.
However Villa’s response was swift and effective as they drew level two minutes later.
Wolves were caught napping as Villa took a quick free kick and Ollie Watkins cross picked out Pau Torres, who beat Semedo to force the ball beyond Sa.
Lemina saw red for two yellows late on but Wolves did enough to hang onCredit: Getty
It was instant redemption for the Spaniard who netted his first ever Villa goal.
And it earned him a partial reprieve from Unai Emery who had been furious with him for his part in Wolves opener.
Lemina then sparked a flurry of bookings when he fouled Luiz – which turned out to be a costly one.
Because four minutes into stoppage time he received a second yellow for tugging at Nicolo Zaniolo’s shorts.
That almost proved costly for Wolves as Villa surged forward in an attempt to grab a winner in 12 minutes of added time!
Watkins fired into the side net, Zaniolo fired just wide following a Bailey corner and Wolves breathed a huge sigh of relief when Watkins’ header beat Sa only gto bounce to safety off the base of his post.

West Ham 2 Newcastle 2: Kudus bags first Premier League goal late on as Toon suffer Champions League hangover

WHILE the Parisians were cast aside with ease, Newcastle were left reeling from a late sucker punch in East London. On Wednesday, the Toon produced one of the greatest nights in their long, illustrious history with a truly special Champions League thumping of Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park.
West Ham picked up a late equaliser thanks to Mohammed Kudus’ first Premier League goalCredit: Getty
Four days later, back in the Premier League, it was looking to be an unmemorable trip to the capital before Alexander Isak scored twice in five minutes to complete a nitty-gritty turnaround at West Ham.
But up stepped Mohammed Kudus in the 89th minute to deny the Geordies the perfect week – and it could have been a whole lot worse had Jarrod Bowen’s late effort crept in.
Against PSG, it was a magical night on Tyneside thanks to four scintillating goals.
Against the Hammers, it was anything but, and ultimately Newcastle paid the price.
They remain unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions, but this one is going to sting.
David Moyes will be left wondering how this one got away from his West Ham who are also on the up, having lost just twice all season to Manchester City and Liverpool.
Tomas Soucek gave the hosts the perfect start in the eighth minute thanks to yet another stunning intervention from Lucas Paqueta.
But the brilliant Brazilian can only do so much, and West Ham faded as Newcastle’s light burned brighter as the match went on.
Newcastle certainly rode their luck in the first half. Paqueta’s Samba pal Bruno Guimaraes was lucky not to receive a quick-fire second yellow card for a clumsy counter-denying tackle.
Isak’s ruthlessness in front of goal looked to have decided it, and squandered a brilliant chance for a hat-trick only for the post to play the part of party-pooper.
The cost? Kudus slamming home his first Prem goal to send the London Stadium potty.
The biggest surprise pre-match came in Moyes’ team selection, including Michail Antonio despite the striker missing the Europa League trip to Freiburg with an abductor injury.

It was a return that allowed newly recalled England international Bowen to shuffle over to his usual right-wing role, hoping to score his 100th professional goal in English football.
With Anthony Gordon suspended, Eddie Howe slotted Sandro Tonali into his midfield, in an otherwise unchanged line-up from their PSG-mauling.
West Ham began brightly, and Paqueta’s trickery instantly brought about the opener, his cute dink setting Emerson Palmieri into the box down the left.
His skewed, shinned touch fortuitously took the ball past an onrushing Nick Pope and a simple squared cross handed the unmarked Soucek his fourth goal in his last six games.
Paqueta really was running the show, making a mockery of a Newcastle side that had run Kylian Mbappe and co ragged.
Moyes has labelled him his little “maverick”, and Paqueta was living up to that name with bone-crunching tackles and a flea-like persistence to regain possession.
Newcastle star Alexander Isak’s brace turned the game on its headCredit: PA
It would have been easy to put this sluggish Newcastle start down to fatigue, but that would be taking too much credit away from West Ham.
The visitors gradually made some chances of their own. Dan Burn came close with a header from a Kieran Trippier free-kick as half time approached.
After the break, it was another Trippier delivery that produced the equaliser in the 57th minute. Edson Alvarez’s header only fell into the path of Isak as he smashed home from close range.
Newcastle rumbled on. It was Trippier again with a first-time volleyed cross in the 62nd minute and Isak was there to tap into an empty net.
Had Isak found the net for his hat-trick in the 73rd minute having rounded Pope instead of smacking the post, the game would have been over.
Instead, West Ham hung on in there, and off the bench came Kudus with space just outside the box and a 20-yard volley that stung the net, as well as Toon hearts.
