I worked with Pep Guardiola but now I’m making it on my own, I’m so dedicated I slept at the training ground for weeks

ENZO MARESCA learned from the best at Manchester City. And now he is using that experience to guide Leicester City back to the Premier League.

Maresca, 43, took charge of the Foxes in June – shortly after they were relegated from England’s top tier.
Despite losing key players such as James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, the Italian has completely transformed the squad and turned them into Championship trailblazers.
Stoke manager Alex Neil has even suggested that his Leicester team will go down as “one of the best Championship sides of all time”.
The Foxes are currently leading the table with 30 points from 11 games.

Ipswich Town are hot on their heels with 28, but there is a huge gulf between the top two teams and those that follow.
But how did Maresca transform Leicester? The former Man City assistant is convinced that his work ethic has been a huge factor in his success so far.
Until recently he had regularly been sleeping at Leicester’s Seagrave base.
Speaking to the Daily Mail earlier this year, he said: “There is no limit to my team.

“The most important thing is the ‘idea’, to show we know what we are doing.”
Shortly after his arrival, Maresca even went as far as making his squad stay overnight at the club’s training ground for a week in a bid to hammer home his principles.
Before joining Leicester, the former midfielder was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Man City.
He helped lead the Cityzens to the treble last season.
Speaking about Guardiola’s influence, Maresca told Sky Sports: “I’ve been lucky, I’ve worked under Ancelotti, Lippi, Manuel Pellegrini, all fantastic managers, but in terms of understanding the game, Pep has 100 per cent had an impact on me.
“It helps a lot having worked with the kinds of people [I have worked with]. You learn things and at the end you create your own idea as a manager and as a person. It’s just something gradual.
“The first idea was probably born when I faced Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team as a player, that was the first time I realised something different happened and I was curious to understand, so I started analysing games and from there taking things from different managers. In the end you create your own idea.” More

“That’s a question for him, not me. I just don’t see why he can’t still have a successful career in management in the next few years.”
Keane still has admirers in the game as SunSport revealed Wales wanted him to replace Robert Page as their manager in June.
The TV pundit is hugely admired by Football Association of Wales CEO and fellow Irishman Noel Mooney.
But Mooney was talked down by other senior members of the Welsh hierarchy, who called for the FAW to support Page for the rest of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
And their faith in the Welsh tactician has been vindicated as the 49-year-old is close to punching the Dragons’ ticket for the summer’s finals in Germany. More

My dad is a Premier League cult hero and played for England – now I’m making my own way in the Championship

GEORGE HIRST’S father David starred for Sheffield Wednesday in the Premier League and even earned three England caps during his successful career. But despite playing in the same position, the Ipswich striker has never felt pressure to emulate his old man.

The 24-year-old began his career at Wednesday, but left for Belgium after just two appearances.
Following a brief stint at OH Leuven he returned to these shores with Leicester, going on to be farmed out on four loans.
In the last of these temporary spells, Hirst found somewhere he wanted to call a home in Portman Road.
The 6ft 4in target man bagged six goals during the second half of Ipswich’s promotion campaign last term, and has been a regular this time around in the Championship.

Despite his illustrious dad, Hirst has never felt the weight of his surname.
Speaking to The Portsmouth News in 2021, he said: “I don’t see it as a pressure because we are two completely different strikers.
“As much as people will make the comparisons naturally, my dad is 5ft 11in, even though he tells me he’s 6ft. I’m 6ft 4in. He’s left footed, I’m right footed.
“So straight away I don’t see the comparison at all, there are differences.

“Growing up with that hasn’t been a pressure, I’ve seen it as a free learning tool. You can have the best coach in the world, but to have someone like that on my doorstep at home every night, looking at my clips, giving me little pointers, is invaluable.”
Hirst does dream of improving on his dad’s exploits, however, adding: “I would love to be able to retire and say I played for England more times than he did.
“He also spends a lot of time talking about his goal in the 1993 FA Cup final, so if I can score a couple that would be brilliant.”
Hirst’s Ipswich Town are certainly heading in the right direction.
Having sealed promotion from League One courtesy of a runners-up finish behind Plymouth Argyle last term, the Tractor Boys have raced out of the blocks in the second tier.
Kieran McKenna’s men sit second in the Championship table after 11 games, just two points behind Hirst’s former team Leicester.
On why he wanted to stay at Portman Road, Hirst said in the summer: “Ipswich has felt like home for the last six months and a big part of why I wanted to come back.
“The last few months of last season were massive for me, doing what we did as a team, and that was something I wanted to carry on being part of. The reception I got from the fans, players and staff here was brilliant.”

They include Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Demarai Gray and Moussa Dembele.
