Son of Premier League icon and Sky Sports favourite now following in his footsteps and League One club have ‘high hopes’

JAMIE CARRAGHER’S son continues to go from strength-to-strength as he looks to forge his own footballing legacy.Despite their relegation to League One last season, Wigan Athletic secured the future of the highly-rated 20-year-old James Carragher.

He penned a new contract at the DW Stadium to tie him to the club until at least 2025.
And he continues to show that following in the footsteps of his legendary father is no issue.
Liverpool icon Carragher, 45, spent his entire career at Anfield and made 737 appearances for them – second only to Ian Callaghan in the all-time standings.
He played in the infamous Istanbul comeback against AC Milan that secured the Champions League trophy in 2005.

And he also won the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times, the Uefa Super Cup two times and the Uefa Cup during his career.
These days Carragher is one of the most-popular and recognisable pundits in the business and star of Sky Sports Monday Night Football alongside ex-Manchester United ace Gary Neville.
Meanwhile, his son James left Liverpool’s academy for Wigan aged 14 and went on to captain their U18 side to two Professional Development League North titles.
He turned pro in 2021 and then made his senior debut that August against Hull City in the Carabao Cup.

James made several more outings in the EFL Trophy that campaign before gaining more experience last term after scoring in a pre-season victory over a Liverpool XI.
He had another appearance in the Carabao Cup before heading out to National League side Oldham Athletic on loan.
Sadly, he made just five appearances before that spell was cut short through injury but Wigan’s academy manager has seen more than enough to admit he has “high hopes” for the starlet.
After his contract extension was announced in the summer, Gregor Rioc said: “We are absolutely delighted to have James extend his stay with Wigan Athletic.
“He has progressed brilliantly throughout his time in our Academy, and has made a number of first-team appearances following his debut in August 2021.
“James has spent time out on loan with Oldham Athletic, which was a great experience for him.
“We are really excited for James to return from his injury, and we have really high hopes for him in the future.
“James is only going to keep improving, and we’re pleased that he will continue his development with us in the years to come.”
Those thoughts were echoed by first-team boss Shaun Maloney, who added: “James is a talented young central defender who has a great future ahead of him.”
James is yet to make an appearance for Wigan in League One so far this season, but his dad could not have been more pleased to see his boy pen a new deal.

He shared a snap of himself alongside his son signing the contract and captioned it with: “Delighted @jcarragher31 has signed a new two year deal @laticsofficial.
“He’s had to show a lot of mental strength these last few months, which will hold him in good stead for a career in football. Very proud of you son.”

Former England star Andy Carroll reveals he spent £1,000 on exotic cat before giving it away just two weeks later

FORMER Liverpool and Newcastle striker Andy Carroll has revealed he spent £1,000 on an exotic cat – only to give it away two weeks later.Carroll caused a stir this summer when he left cash-strapped Reading for Ligue 2 French side Amiens – and it’s fair to say not many people saw the move coming.
Andy Carroll said too much money at a young age led to some unwise decisionsCredit: PA:Press Association
That included buying a Bengal cat which he had to give to his parentsCredit: Getty
Explaining the transfer to the French side located 75 miles north of Paris, Carroll, 34, told The Daily Mail: “I was at Newcastle from seven years old. I made my debut at 17. I just thought, ‘You know what, if I don’t go [abroad] now then I’ll never go’.
” I had another season at Reading. I wasn’t playing and I spoke to the manager. He wanted legs up top which is something I don’t have. I was going to say ‘anymore’ but I don’t think I ever had them!
“I wanted a challenge. A challenge in a completely different country. A fresh start. I spoke to my agent and said, ‘Get me a club abroad’. I came here and it was the one. It’s a one and half hour drive to Calais and I can get the shuttle back to Epping [his family home].”
Carroll wears the number 99 shirt at Amiens and has one goal from his six games played in the French second division so far.

He says one of the greatest parts of playing in France is his ability to keep a low profile.
He revealed he was able to watch Newcastle’s 4-1 thrashing of PSG in “a little pub” near Amiens’ training ground with some of his team-mates.

He said the best part about it was that: “No one said a word to me.”
Carroll recounted how having too much money at a young age led to him making some stupid decisions, such as dropping £1,000 on a Bengal cat.

He said about trying to balance his finances: “It’s hard, really hard. It was just coming in my bank and going straight back out, even though me mam and dad were telling me not to.
“You’re 17 years old and getting all this money. All your friends haven’t got anything so you take them with you.
“I wasted money on stupid things. I’d go to Harrods in London and spend five-grand on rubbish. I’d have nothing to show for it. Just gone.
“In the dressing room everyone’s walking round with Lamborghinis or designer clothes. I’ve got money and I’m thinking ‘They’re doing it… I’ll do it as well’. I wanted an exotic cat. Found this Bengal and got it. Like a thousand pound. I had it for two weeks.”
After being unable to take care of the animal, he said he gave it away to his parents.
The striker said he was taken by surprise at his £35million move to Liverpool in 2011, a British record at the time.
He had started the 2010-2011 Premier League season on fire having just led Newcastle up from the Championship as top scorer and both Spurs and Liverpool showed interest.
He said he only learned of the transfer from watching Sky Sports News, explaining: “It came up on Sky Sports News saying £30million for Andy Carroll from Tottenham rejected. Then it says Liverpool £35million accepted.
He’s rediscovering his love of the game at AmiensCredit: Instagram @amiensscfootball
“I went in to see the manager, he rang the owner and the owner says, ‘Yeah, you’re gone’.”
He said he struggled to adjust to the step up in professionalism at Liverpool following a more relaxed approach at Newcastle and that he regrets not grasping his opportunity a little more.
The striker said: “I’m disappointed that I didn’t really grasp Liverpool. I kind of took it for granted. I came out of school, went into Newcastle reserves, went into the first team, signed for Liverpool, played for England.

“Everything I touched turned to gold. Maybe it went to my head a little bit. I could do no wrong, that sort of thing.
“I don’t really know what went wrong. Maybe I wasn’t good enough… I don’t know. I just wish I’d grabbed it a little bit more.” More

When in the house, she was told about Richardson’s £5.5million transfer from Man Utd to Sunderland in 2007.
The eight-time capped England star had played 81 times for United and Charley couldn’t believe he left the club for a side she had never heard of after being deemed surplus to requirements.
She found out the news and said: “I don’t get it what’s going on?
“Who the f*** are Sunderland? Are Sunderland good?

“I can’t see him going there. I don’t think his dad would’ve allowed that unless they got loads of money for it.”
She later ranted: “I can personally tell you, Sunderland, I don’t think so. Bloody Sunderland I’ve never heard of them.
“Sir Alex Ferguson personally told him when Ryan Giggs retires you’re going to be the ones coming up.”
Richardson has lifted the lid on his move and Charley’s outburst, exclusively telling Ladbrokes’ Fanzone: “She doesn’t really know football, it was as simple as that.

“She knows the bigger clubs like Man Utd and Liverpool, but she hadn’t heard of Sunderland.
“She didn’t really know what was happening or what club I was joining. It’s not her fault, she just didn’t know.
“It was funny to see it though, and it was all tongue-in-cheek, really.
“It could have been any club apart from the top ones, and she’d have said the same thing, I’m sure.
“I think it had already been decided that I was leaving the club so I didn’t experience anything negative from Man Utd about Charley being on the show.
“And then, obviously, when I got to Sunderland, no one was really saying anything about it.
“I think that was the right time to leave Man Utd.
“I remember Sir Alex saying: ‘You don’t have to leave, but we’ve had a couple of offers.’
“He didn’t say I had to leave, but I knew it was probably better for me to go, to be honest.
“I have a great relationship with Sir Alex and always did throughout my time with the club.
“Do I think he was watching Big Brother that summer? No, I don’t think so whatsoever.
“Big Brother had nothing to do with me leaving Manchester United. It was strictly football reasons only.”

Fans give mixed reviews on Ferdinand commentary
Rio Ferdinand’s commentary on the Merseyside Derby generated a mixed response from football fans this afternoon.
The Manchester United legend was on punditry duty for TNT Sports ahead of the game, but he moved up to the commentary box after kick-off.
Ferdinand, 44, joined Ally McCoist in providing analysis throughout the match.
But he jokingly issued a quick apology to viewers after reacting to a shot from Dominik Szoboszlai.
As the midfielder unleashed a powerful strike from around 30 yards out, Ferdinand shouted: “Wow!”
Which prompted commentator Darren Fletcher to say: “I think Rio thought he was in!”
Szoboszlai’s shot narrowly flew over the crossbar, but Ferdinand was convinced that Jordan Pickford wouldn’t have been able to save it if it was on target.
Ferdinand then added: “If that was on target I don’t think Pickford’s got enough to get it.
“Sorry guys, I can’t control myself up here!”

Breach said: “You got a warm reception as you stepped up here Rio, didn’t you.”
To which Ferdinand responded: “Lukewarm. It’s better than when I played here I’ve got to say that!”

Ten Hag tells Onana to step up
Erik ten Hag has warned Andre Onana he must step up his performances after his struggling start at Manchester United.

“‘Every player who’s coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period, but he has to step up.
“Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel and David de Gea started not too good. Andre knows that it is good to know a little bit from history.
“But we live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do.
“He showed it at Barcelona, Ajax, Inter Milan, he was in the semi-final and final of the Champions League, I’m sure he will give a great performance.”

Man Utd fans have been told that they can look forward to better times with “no bulls***” Sir Jim Ratcliffe by Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff.
Wolff, who holds a 33 per cent stake in Mercedes, was asked ahead of this week’s Austin F1 GP what Ratcliffe would bring to United.
And he provided plenty of positives to fed-up supporters who are sick of the Glazers being in charge.
The Austrian said: “Jim and his partners, they are first of all complementary.
“They are huge in terms of profit and decisions being made very quickly, three bullet points on a page and here we go.
“With Jim, all the bulls*** is cut out and I think that wherever he gets his power and resource and character behind it I think that’s going to be an add on for any team.”
The Merc chief added: “He’s a Manchester boy. He has the resource that are needed, the heart in the right place for this team and I’m sure that he can be very creative for Manchester United.
