Potter is still well regarded by the Italians for his work at Brighton despite a nightmare spell at Chelsea.
Napoli won the title under current Italy boss Luciano Spalletti but have slumped since Rudi Garcia took charge.
But Potter is also a possible candidate for United when Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s team takes charge if the Red Devils’ owners-in-waiting decide to get rid of Erik ten Hag.
Ratcliffe’s sidekick, Sir Dave Brailsford — who is set to be the football face of the takeover — is a Potter fan and wanted him at French side Nice.

The Ineos owner – Britain’s richest man – has agreed a £1.35billion deal for a 25 per cent share of the club.
And, despite recent delays, the 70-year-old still hopes to formally arrive at Old Trafford in time for the January transfer window.
Ratcliffe is the only contender to seriously invent in the Red Devils after Sheikh Jassim withdrew his takeover bid.
But if Potter, 48, did come in it would be seen as a big gamble.

Notorious spending sprees only appeared to make his plight worse.

Less than four hours after his death had been announced, his old club and Sheffield United took to the pitch for Saturday’s evening kick off – which United won 2-1 thanks to goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot.
And they honoured Sir Bobby’s incredible legacy with a moment of silence before kick-off.
It was observed respectfully by all those inside Bramall Lane as emotional away fans paid tribute to one of their own.
Supporters of the Manchester giants were heard chanting the name of Sir Bobby Charlton before kick off too.

Man Utd released a statement on their website that read: “Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.
“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.
“He was admired as much for his sportsmanship and integrity as he was for his outstanding qualities as a footballer; Sir Bobby will always be remembered as a giant of the game.”
Sheffield United also shared a similar statement of their own on social media.

Sir Bobby is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
He played in the Three Lions’ World Cup triumph in 1966 and went on to win the Ballon d’Or later that year.
He scored 249 goals in 758 games for Manchester United – helping them to their first ever European Cup win in 1968.
Despite playing as a midfielder, Sir Bobby netted a further 49 times in 106 games for England.
He spent almost all of his playing career at Man Utd and was renowned for his passing and long-range shots.
Sir Bobby survived the Munich Air Disaster in 1958 that killed eight of his team-mates.
His wife Lady Norma revealed the star’s battle with dementia in November 2020 in a bid to “help others”.
The sad news furthered calls to investigate the link between football and dementia more vigorously.
A statement from Charlton’s family read: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning.
“He was surrounded by his family. His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him.
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”
Tributes poured in from the likes of former England team-mate Sir Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker, Gary Neville and Eric Cantona.
Hurst is now the only living member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning side.

Man United star McTominay spoke to Sky Sports and was visibly emotional as he spoke about the loss of Sir Bobby.
He said: “It’s devastating to be honest with you, he was an icon at the football club and all over the world. Everyone knew him from being a legend of the game and, more importantly, such an incredible guy as well.
“He’s done so much for the club over the years and everyone is going into this game tonight thinking of him.

“He paved the way for people like myself, Marcus [Rashford] and Jesse [Lingard] who came through the Academy. So for us especially, feeling what he’s done at this football club, it’s difficult. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone at this time.
“It’s difficult but the game is going ahead and we have to do it for Sir Bobby. He was an icon and a legend all around the world in football terms. My mum is obviously devastated and everyone who has grown up watching him over the years has just got to thank him really for everything he’s done for the game.” More

Chelsea player ratings: Cole Palmer impresses but Robert Sanchez won’t want to watch any replays against Arsenal

COLE PALMER impressed for Chelsea as they drew 2-2 with Arsenal on Saturday. The Blues had looked set to claim all three points at Stamford Bridge before being pegged back by their London rivals.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will not want to watch any replays after the Gunners came back from two goals down.
However, summer signing Palmer starred for Chelsea, opening the scoring from the penalty spot.
Here is how SunSport’s Rob Maul rated the Chelsea team.
    Robert Sanchez – 5
Driving rain made this a difficult evening for the goalkeepers in particular.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
And the Spaniard will hide his head in his hands when he watches replays of this match because his sloppy pass lead to Declan Rice’s 77th-minute goal.
    Malo Gusto – 5
All the solid work that the French right-back had done throughout this contest was all undone by his defensive error for the Arsenal equaliser.
Gusto was completely unaware of Leandro Trossard lurking behind him and his lack of awareness essentially cost Chelsea the victory.

    Thiago Silva – 7
There is no mistaking this guy’s class even at 39.

The Brazilian centre-half’s 23rd-minute full-bloodied tackle on Gabriel Martinelli typified the physical approach that Chelsea brought to this match, particularly in the first half, and the home favourite did brilliantly to block a goal-bound close-range header by William Saliba on 65 minutes.
    Levi Colwill – 6
His evening’s work was spoilt by the fact Arsenal scored twice in the final 20 minutes of the match to grab a point at Stamford Bridge but until then he had gone about his business with little fuss, managing to keep Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Martinelli quiet.
    Marc Cucurella – 6
Cucurella left an early mark on Saka – as if to say, ‘look, I am the boss here’ – and was later cautioned on 70 minutes for a robust challenge on the England star.
But in the decisive moment, he fell short, being unable to stop Saka’s back-post cross that led to the equaliser by Trossard.
    Moises Caicedo – 6
Had a compelling battle with Declan Rice in the midfield of this London derby and perhaps he could argue it was a 50-50 call between him and the Englishman as they cancelled each other out.
    Enzo Fernandez – 6
As a World Cup winner and £100million-plus player, a lot is expected of the Argentine every time he dons a Chelsea shirt and though he put in a shift, you come away with the impression that he should have done so much more.
    Raheem Sterling – 5
The England star had a few forays down the right channel in the first half but really showed little end product and was subbed off for the closing stages for Noni Madueke.
    Conor Gallagher – 6
With his blond locks tied up in a bunch, the Chelsea captain was involved in plenty of attacks by the home side in the first half, and offered lots of creativity while operating in the hole behind the lone striker Cole Palmer.

    Mykhailo Mudryk – 7
Keep an eye on your balls, Mudryk. Ukrainian scored three minutes into the second half thanks to a fluke – his intended cross flew over the head of Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya – but he had been warned pre-match by fellow countryman Oleksandr Zinchenko that if was on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge, his private parts would “be ripped off”…
    Cole Palmer – 7
Another impressive display from the 21-year-old, who had the confidence to snatch the ball off Sterling for the penalty on 15 minutes and then had the composure to fire his attempt home from 12 yards for his second goal in a Chelsea shirt in successive games.
    Subs
    Nicolas Jackson (for Mudryk 66) – 5
Had a superb chance to score not long after coming on but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya cleanly took the ball off his feet. He had another attempt in stoppage time but couldn’t finish it off.

    Reece James (for Palmer 84) – 5
Though he could not influence the match, Reece James came on as a late sub for just his third appearance of an injury-hit campaign.
    Noni Madueke (for Sterling 84) – 5
Slotted into the attack in place of Sterling but did not have much impact as the game closed out to a draw More

But there was confusion over who was going to take it.
Sterling tried to take the ball from Palmer’s hands, with the former Manchester City pair seemingly arguing over the matter.
Eventually, Enzo Fernandez came over and made it clear that Palmer – who scored a penalty against Burnley – would be the taker.
And it proved to be a good decision as the England U21 international sent David Raya the wrong way to give Chelsea the lead.

Palmer’s strike means he has now scored in back-to-back games for his new club.
The 21-year-old, who joined for £42.5million from Man City in the summer, bagged a penalty and an assist in a 4-1 win over Burnley before the international break.
Prior to that, he also assisted Nicolas Jackson’s winner in their 1-0 victory over Brighton in the Carabao Cup at the end of September.
Meanwhile, Sterling produced a sensational performance against Burnley earlier this month as he too scored and assisted in the match.

Yet despite his superb displays, he found himself left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad yet again for the games against Australia and Italy.
Sterling came into the Arsenal clash with three goals and one assist in nine games this season.
He played off the right in the London derby on Saturday, with Mudryk on the left and Palmer through the middle.
But Chelsea threw away a 2-0 lead as Arsenal came roaring back to salvage a point through goals from Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard. More

Townsend, who joined the Hatters during the international break, came off the bench as Luton battled back to earn a 2-2 draw.
However, supporters were confused to see their new number 30 with “Townsend Sr.” printed on his shirt.
Several fans questioned the “Sr.” on X, formerly Twitter, with one writing: “Hell of a comeback, that one. This Townsend Sr. fella looks like a decent acquisition, doesn’t he?”
Meanwhile, another added: “Is Townsend Jr. in the squad? If not, I’m struggling with this!!!”

Townsend’s new shirt name is in reference to his four-year-old son.

As a result, the winger has switched from having “Townsend” on his back.
Luton completed the free transfer of Townsend earlier this month, signing the 32-year-old on a short-term deal until the end of this year.

Townsend had been a free agent after leaving Everton at the end of last season.
He had previously been on trial at Burnley during pre-season but was not offered a deal.
