Luton ready to smash their transfer record to sign the ‘next Moises Caicedo’ after scouting starlet in Ecuador

LUTON will have to pay £5.5million for Ecuadorian midfielder Oscar Zambrano — and LDU Quito could yet want even more. The Hatters have had a £3.8m bid rejected already for the 19-year-old — who is their top January target.

LDU are in Saturday’s Copa Sudamericana final — and if Zambrano puts on a show, they are happy to have an auction for the ‘next Moises Caicedo’.
Hatters chief scout Phil Chapple went to speak to the LDU Quito player — who was in Copa Sudamerica action in Argentina —  about a potential £5million swoop.
Zambrano, 19, is a defensive midfielder in the mould of Moises Caicedo, who was picked up in Ecuador by Brighton and sold to Chelsea for a Premier League record £115m.
In fact, Zambrano came through the same football academy as Caicedo and has been keen to come to Europe since a trial at Ajax a couple of years ago.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Luton want to recruit Zambrano for the survival battle and hope to sort a fee and agree personal terms as soon as possible.
Ironically, Chapple has gone on the mission with John Morling, a Luton scout who worked for Brighton and knows the type of player that is available cheap in South America.
The Ecuador Under-20s star has already made over 20 starts in senior football, including in the Copa Sudamericana —  also similar to Caicedo’s profile who was snapped up fast.
The midfielder joined Brighton from Independiente del Valle in 2021 and quickly rose to stardom.

The Ecuador international was first sent off on loan to Beerschot the same year.
And then, the 21-year-old went on to amass a total of two goals and three assists in 53 appearances with the Seagulls.
Caicedo completed his record move to Chelsea in the summer and has since registered eight appearances at Stamford Bridge.
The Ecuadorian was also targeted by Arsenal last January and tried to force a move to the Emirates that didn’t materialise.
Liverpool also tried to land him in the summer with a record offer of their own but the Blues outbid them. More

Ratcliffe, 71, has been linked with buying a 25 per cent stake in United and McIlroy, 34, thinks he would be a hit with supporters.

The former midfielder managed Sunderland as well as Ipswich and then worked as a coach for the Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and of course Forest.
Kieran Richardson played with the ex-Ireland international for three years at United and then worked under him at the Stadium of Light during the 2007-2008 season.
And Richardson insists the controversial star did a brilliant job at the Black Cats.
The ex-England international remembers Keane as the same man everyone sees on Sky Sports every week talking about “standards”.

The former full-back admits the 52-year-old rubbed a few people the wrong way but he always looked to get the best out of his players, just like he did with his team-mates at United as captain.
Richardson exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone: “Playing for Roy, having played with him at Man United, it wasn’t weird for me.
“He just felt like my captain again, really. As you see every week on TV with Roy, he just talks about standards.
“With Roy, he was a great captain and, for me, he was a great manager.

“Run more than anyone else, and graft, and the rest takes care of itself. That’s all he ever asked of us as players.
“I loved playing for Roy, and I loved him as a captain. You will not get any better than him as a captain, any player, at any club in the world.
“No one comes close to Roy. He required the highest levels from his team-mates. He wanted the best of the best, from the best. And that was what he got out of his team-mates at Man United.
“He was very similar as a captain and as a manager. I loved it, because I’m one of those players who likes to be told. Some players don’t like it, some go the other way.” More

The former Tottenham and Southampton chief has been linked with a move to Old Trafford as part of a management shake-up if Sir Jim Ratcliffe buys into the club and takes control of football operations.
But Saudi clubs are also looking at Mitchell as they plan the next phase of their recruitment drive.
The former Manchester City youth player, 42, left Monaco earlier this year and recently moved back to his native North West, fuelling talk that United would be his next port of call.

Erik ten Hag dedicates win to Sir Bobby Charlton
United manager Ten Hag said post-match: “Very sad, our thoughts are with his family, especially his wife, his children and grandchildren.
“What he achieved in football was immense. Also his personality off the pitch. The football world lost a big man.
“We had to show our respect for him and I think we did that today. We wanted to celebrate but also to remember him.
“[The tribute from our fans] was fantastic. We have to pay contribution, pay our big goodbye, remembering Bobby Charlton because what he did was magnificent.
“He was outstanding on the pitch and off it.
“We wanted to remember Sir Bobby and I think we did it in a decent way.”
    Casemiro’s return
Erik ten Hag is not unhappy that Casemiro played with an injured ankle for Brazil against Uruguay, but expects him to be fit for the Manchester derby next weekend.
“You can’t – they are the rules,” the Dutchman said.
“And he’s played for his nation and he’s playing for us and we all understand Casemiro is a solider and he is always available for every game, he will always gives his best for nation and Manchester United.
“He was injured in the first game and he came off but he played the second game, it was an important one. I’m sure that game didn’t help him but it’s a small injury and he’ll return next week and he will be healed and ready for our next game, I’m sure.”
    Recruitment is key says Souness
Graeme Souness believes that recruitment will be key for Sir Jim Ratcliffe if he is to address Man Utd’s slump.
“They [United] are one of, if not the biggest club in the world. Yet, they have a modest group of players,” the Scot told the Daily Mail.
“Because of that, there is one area Ratcliffe must address with urgency. Recruitment.
“This is the most important thing you have to get right at any club. Man United, since Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill left in 2013, have given a masterclass in how not to do it, and they’ve spent over £1billion in the process.”
    Mark of respect
Man Utd’s stars wore black armbands in respect of Bobby Charlton’s passing.
Here is Harry Maguire showing off his after a win against Sheffield United.

    Greenwood stops at Burger King
Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood could be in for a grilling — as he is clocked grabbing a Burger King with his father.
His new coach at Spanish club Getafe, José Bordalás, forbids players from eating junk food.

But Greenwood, 22, and dad Andrew stopped off to collect two Burger King meals after training yesterday in Madrid.
Bordalás says the players are weighed every day and get a fine if they are too hefty.
Greenwood was loaned this summer after charges including attempted rape were dropped.
    Ten Hag’s quotes on
Erik ten Hag calls Charlton a “giant” of the game.
A legend, a giant, his achievements are so immense and global… I never had the honour to meet him but what I heard, despite all his trophies and games, he was so humble and a big personality, he’s an example for all of us in society and global wide.”Ten Hag on Charlton’s passing More

I refused to pay £7 subs for non-league team – 7 games later I was playing in Championship and now I’m European champion

MICHAIL ANTONIO is still standing, after all this time.Looking like a true survivor and still feeling like the little kid who had to fight even to make it as a footballer, Antonio has seen off all-comers to become and remain West Ham’s main man.

Although the Jamaica international, now 33, doesn’t want to big himself up quite that much.
Antonio said: “I wouldn’t say main man!
“I didn’t set out to be a striker, I didn’t set out to be here for nine years.
“It has been a crazy, rollercoaster ride.

“There has been only one transfer window where I haven’t been linked away.

The hunger and belief to win that annual battle comes from Antonio’s pre-fame days.
As a teenager playing for non-League Tooting & Mitcham, he had trials for Brentford and QPR but wasn’t signed.
Then AFC Wimbledon demanded he paid the £7 registration fee to join them.
Antonio said: “I thought, ‘No, I’m good enough for you to be paying £7 for me’.
“I went back and signed a contract at Tooting & Mitcham, and after seven games I signed for Reading.
“So the fighter was always in me and being here at West Ham has constantly made me fight.
“It has made me a better player and it’s why I have been here for so long.
“Every single year I have had to prove I had the quality to be here.”
I don’t ever want to be just another person… I want you to know me and my personalityMichail Antonio
Gianluca Scamacca, who scored for Italy against England last week, is the latest centre forward to come and go while Antonio has written himself into West Ham folklore.
Two seasons ago he became the Hammers’ leading scorer in the Premier League and in June was part of the team that won the Europa Conference League, the club’s first major trophy for 43 years.
To achieve these and other landmarks at West Ham is particularly special to Antonio because of his respect and admiration for Clyde Best.
It is Black History Month and Antonio is well aware of the different kind of challenges Best faced when he joined the Hammers at the age of 17 as one of the first black players of English football’s modern era.
Antonio said: “Clyde Best laid the ground for every black player in the Premier League today.
“His story is crazy, from having to fly from Bermuda to getting directions to the training ground and having to live in digs all on his own.
“Being the first black player, having to handle the racism in that time – I don’t think I could handle it, I would probably have been fighting.
“He would have been getting riled up, and people would have shouted abuse at him, but he showed we can do it.”

The Jamaican has a lot of love for Ian WrightCredit: Getty
Antonio’s other heroes when he was growing up included global icons like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry.
But Ian Wright – another former Hammers striker – holds a special place in his heart.
Antonio said: “It’s because of how he broke through from non-league to achieve all he did in his career.
“And he always showed his character on the pitch. It’s so easy to be just another person.
“I don’t ever want to be just another person. I want you to know me and my personality.”
    MICH-ING HIS MARK
On the pitch, Antonio does that with his goal celebrations and tireless effort.
Off it, he’s found an outlet in the Footballer’s Football Podcast, where he and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson trade insight and insults under the watchful ear of Rickie Haywood-Williams.
Antonio hopes one day to follow Wright into mainstream entertainment broadcasting, as opposed to pure punditry.
But for now, and after staying longer at West Ham than anybody expected, he has other targets.
Antonio said: “I’ve definitely got a good legacy.
“I was one of the last people to score at the Boleyn Ground, the first person to score at the London Stadium in the Premier League, first player to score four goals… I’ve got a list!
“Right now I’m on 77 goals, what’s the next thing? To score 100 goals for West Ham. It is close enough for me to get there.
