Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand breaks silence on Jim Ratcliffe investment and fears ‘player turmoil’

RIO FERDINAND has told Sir Jim Ratcliffe to reveal his grand plans for Manchester United or risk more dressing-room turmoil.Ratcliffe, 71, is set to buy a 25 per cent stake in the club in a £1.3billion deal with the Glazers — and have  control of football operations.

But United legend Ferdi, 44, declared: “We’ve not had it explained what 25 per cent looks like from a  business standpoint, to appease the anxiety.
“Most fans wanted a new ownership. It’s not that now, so communication is vital.
“If Mr Ratcliffe is coming in and wants to hit the ground running, show some signs of influence.
“One of the key areas he needs to zone in on is communication with the fanbase.

“They are so important with the tone around the ground and that influences players.
“If you can control the  hype,  you have a better chance of keeping the dressing room  tightknit and emotions to a level to perform.
“At the moment, the grey area for every single element of the football club is not healthy.”
There is a proposal of a new United football committee, which could include Sir Jim’s INEOS colleague Sir Dave Brailsford.

However, with negotiations still being finalised after Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani withdrew his £5bn offer to buy the Red Devils, there remains confusion over the exact role and power Ratcliffe will take on from the club’s US  owners, the Glazer family.
Asked if Erik ten Hag’s squad have the mentality to deal with the noise on and off the pitch, Ferdinand added: “It is hard  to say whether this squad can deal with stuff like this.
“You are demanding a lot from them.
“They are a team  still trying to find out who they are.
“But I wouldn’t have any player being able to have the excuse. I’ve seen it, I’ve been there.”
The ongoing uncertainty over the drawn-out takeover — the Glazers put United up for sale in November last year — has coincided with the team’s poor start to the season. Ten Hag’s side are eighth in the Premier League and already eight points behind leaders Tottenham after just nine games.
They have also lost their opening two Champions League fixtures  to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray and sit bottom of Group A as they host Copenhagen tomorrow.
Ferdinand added: “When stability isn’t there underneath, that’s when you need to come to the front as an owner and say how it is. It puts everyone at ease.
“That’s not going to right everything, just by communicating but it goes a long way and squashes a few of those loud voices.”
The former England defender suggested British billionaire Ratcliffe should use United’s former chief executive David Gill as inspiration.

Gill, now 66, was in the job from 2003-13, overseeing great success under legendary  manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ferdinand, who won six Prem titles, the Champions League and three EFL Cups at United between 2002-14, said: “In my time, David Gill left us in no uncertain terms about the direction of the club and a clear, ‘This is the project’.
“We went through a lull when Jose Mourinho and Chelsea were dominating, as well as Arsenal and that was when my contract renegotiation was going on.
“People were courting me but I was absolutely clear and happy with the club’s aspirations.
“If there were any issues, you went to see him. Plain and  simple. I don’t know if that’s going on at the club now.
“Technical staff could be telling players what the project is.

The midfielder had spent 10 years with United after joining the club’s academy at the age of 16.
And he recently recalled the time he and some team-mates were asked to be ball boys for a first-team match.
Pereira, who switched his international allegiance from Belgium to Brazil as a teenager, was a huge fan of Real Madrid legend Kaka.
The Fulham star admitted he asked the Brazilian for his shirt during a match between the Red Devils and Los Blancos, but ended up with his shorts instead.

During an interview with ESPN Brazil, Pereira said: “It was a Champions League match between Manchester and Real Madrid and I was a ball boy.
“Alex Ferguson asked the U21 and U18 players if they wanted to be ball boys, because he needed the ball quicker and so on.
“After the game, I waited and saw Kaka. I asked for his shirt, but he said he’d already changed. Then I said: anything then, a sock, shorts, I don’t know.
“He said he had a pair of shorts, I said it would do. He gave it to me, it was incredible, and the shorts are still in a safe to this day.”

Pereira went on to reveal that he rubs the shorts on his legs for confidence before a big game, adding: “Every now and then, before an important game, I go and get them to give me confidence, to rub on my leg.”
The midfielder then admitted that he cried when speaking to Kaka properly for the first time – just a few weeks ago.
He added: “Two weeks ago, I was at Willian’s house and he asked me who I really admired. I said I’d always liked Kaka a lot, because of his style of play, he was an example to me.
“He said he knew Kaka and said he was going to ring him. I thought: he must be joking. I kept quiet, it put me off.
“He called, I heard his voice and I couldn’t stand it, I cried. I spoke to him, to this day I can’t believe I spoke to Kaka. Everyone was in shock.
“Kaka even said that when he came here we were going to do something, and I joked with Willian: don’t even call me, I’ll freeze at the table.
“He’s always been an idol to me, I’ve always liked his style. A very special person.”

That is according to the Daily Mail, who state that “clubs are braced for a rearranged festive fixture list that could see Christmas Day left as the only one without a televised game”.
Premier League execs are currently making their amendments to the match schedule for the back end of December and January.
They have already announced their TV picks and alterations for the first round of games for December.
And now they hope to confirm the Festive fixtures and their new timings early this week.

This fresh update states that “scheduling a first Premier League game on Christmas Eve since 1995 has been on the agenda” for bosses.
Wolves’ home clash with Chelsea is the favourite for the controversial TV spot but that has received fierce backlash since speculation emerged last week.
Top-flight teams are aware that further changes have been discussed and that they would enable supporters to watch at least one match per day – except for December 25.
However, there are a number of factors to be considered before any official announcement such as travel issues, policing and broadcasters.

Due to the Qatar World Cup last winter, last season’s festive fixtures did not get underway until Boxing Day.
During the 11 day period that followed there was only a December 29 that did not feature a Premier League match on TV.
This report also states that “at least one match is in line to be pushed back as far as January 2” with the FA Cup third round taking place over the opening weekend of the New Year. More
