Luton hope to seal shock transfer for South American wonderkid… but could see move scuppered by shock contract clause

LUTON hope to clinch a deal for Oscar Zambrano — but the teenage midfielder may have to give up his slice of the transfer.Ecuadorian Zambrano, 19, is due 15 per cent of the potential £5.5million fee but his club LDU Quito would like him to waive that.

An alternative would be for Luton to pay Zambrano the cash but that only increases the club’s overall outlay.
Ironically, Hatters’ chances of landing Zambrano were boosted after he was an unused sub in LDU’s Copa Sudamericana final win over Brazilian side Fortaleza last week — and a handful of clubs turned up hoping to watch him.
Zambrano is a defensive midfielder in the mould of Moises Caicedo, who was picked up in Ecuador by Brighton and sold to Chelsea for a Premier League record £115m.
In fact, Zambrano came through the same football academy as Caicedo and has been keen to come to Europe since a trial at Ajax a couple of years ago.

Luton take on Liverpool this afternoon looking to claim a famous scalp at Kenilworth Road.
Rob Edwards’ side go into the game in 18th with five points from ten games.
Even a draw, however, would see them clamber above Bournemouth and above the drop zone.
Luton have a number of injury issues, with Edwards claiming his side are “down to the bare bones”.

But he absolutely does not believe today’s game is a “free hit”.
Asked ahead of the match, he said: “Absolutely not.
“The game is another opportunity for us to win a game of football so I don’t see it like that.
“Liverpool are a massive club doing really well in the league but there is a chance, like there is in every game, if we do things right.
“We do those things right, if they have an off day, there is a chance, so I don’t see this game like that.” More

I’m a Premier League champion with Man Utd but injury wrecked my career, now I spend my time fishing

ANDERS LINDEGAARD was one of the few Manchester United goalkeepers over the years to very nearly oust David de Gea from his starting spot. His chance came in January 2012, when he was told by Sir Alex Ferguson that his impressive performances in training had earned him a starting berth.

De Gea, who had come in for a then big-money £29million from Atletico Madrid at the start of the 2011-12 season, was struggling to settle and Fergie was willing to give Lindegaard a run until the end of the season.
But Lindegaard, who had joined United from Norwegian side Aalesund for around £3.5m in 2010, told Manchester Evening News that his dream big break soon became a nightmare.
After starting six of seven games, it looked as though the shirt was Lindegaard’s to lose.
But as the team prepared to face Stoke City in January, Lindegaard’s fortunes turned for the worse.

The Dane spoke about how the injury he suffered in training ended up as a turning point in his career.
He said: “I found myself lying on the ground with a badly hurt ankle, finished for the season. The instant it happened I knew it was bad. I was in agony but the hurt from the reality of the situation was far more painful.
“I was just quietly lying on the ground with tears streaming down my face. It was a turning point, a painful turning point.”
Lindegaard admits that he struggled to ever return to the standards that had once seen him take the number one shirt off De Gea – despite returning to fitness for the 2012 European Championships at the end of that season.

Lindegaard said the injury badly affected his form thereafter, explaining: “I couldn’t jump off my right leg and my distribution was badly affected. My distribution at the time was my edge, my kicking was top-class.
“When that didn’t work it was difficult for me to play with confidence. And it’s difficult to be a goalkeeper without confidence.”
The following season, he played the minimum 10 times to earn a Premier League winners medal in Fergie’s final year in charge.
However, he said he was naive in not telling the manager just how much he had been struggling with injury and felt he was not truly part of the team’s success.
He said: “The whole following year, which was the boss’ [Ferguson’s] final year, I was struggling badly. I wasn’t smart enough to tell the management I wasn’t feeling right and take my time to get it fixed. I just wanted to play and contribute. I ended up playing ten Premier League matches that season to earn my winner’s medal. But I performed badly.
“Looking at it retrospectively I’m proud to be a Premier League winner. But I performed badly that season and didn’t feel it was my honour.”
After Fergie left, he would only go on to play three times again for United as he became a clear second-choice under David Moyes.
He left United for West Brom in 2015 in a move he says he now regrets.
He says at the time he only wanted to play, but should have accepted a back-up role: “In the end the choice was between extending my contract and accepting my role or try something new. I chose something new. I regret that now but it is what it is.
His Instagram is full of pictures of him cooking outdoorsCredit: Instagram @anders.lindegaard
“A life without regrets is a life not worth living for me. It was a difficult time for the club. Under Sir Alex, everything was like being a part of a closely-knit family. He was the great charismatic patriarch who held everything together.”
Despite leaving United in search of first-team football, his fortunes did not really improve.
He only appeared in one game for the Baggies, before moving to Preston where he played 24 times.
He played twice following a move to Burnley before moving to the Swedish league in 2019.
Last year, the keeper hung up his gloves at the age of 38 after saying he’d come to the realisation he’d run his race in football.
He explained: “Both physically and mentally I have no more energy to play professional football. I don’t feel the same enjoyment and passion for being on the pitch anymore.
“I’ve always been very clear about finishing my career too late than too soon. I would never forgive myself for doubting if I should have played another year or two.”

The keeper is yet to announce his next big step in terms of career, but his Instagram is testament to the fact that he is focusing on spending time with his family and fishing.

Mourinho told me to f*** off and threatened to sign Varane – I kicked lumps out of team-mates for rest of the day

But ahead of the 2015-16 campaign the Portuguese manager threatened to bench them both in favour of then-Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
Recalling the fallout on an episode of John Obi Mikel’s The Obi One Podcast, Terry said: “We’d signed a few new big players and he did this possession game where me and Gaz are playing the ball into midfield and there’s no space to play but you had to go through midfield to get to the other third.
“Me and Gaz are feeding it in, it is getting intercepted, we’re conceding goals and he stops the session.
“I’m the captain and Gaz is vice-captain, we’d just won the league the year before and he goes ‘you two, you can f*** off.

“I’ll go and sign Varane and another top defender in the world for £100million and you two can sit on the bench and watch them’.
“Me and Gaz are like “f****** hell we won the league last year! We couldn’t believe it.
“Then we looked at each other and thought ‘game on’. I promise you for the rest of the session, all me and Gaz did was kick absolute lumps out of everyone.
“The level in training went up and the new players went ‘oh my god, he’s just battered the captain and vice-captain. He’s in charge’.

“Afterwards he put his arm around me and Gaz walking off the pitch and said to us ‘that’s why you are my captain and vice-captain’.”
Despite his threat, Mourinho did not sign a new centre-back that summer.
And he was sacked just a few months later in December 2015 with Chelsea just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Sunderland are offering in-demand Clarke a raise but also want to include a big sell-on clause in any deal.
Clarke, who is under contract until 2026 at the Stadium of Light, led the Championship top scorer charts going into November.
Potential suitors will be chasing him in January, so the Wearside club have put new terms to the 22-year-old.
But the cash on offer is not a big increase and he could pick up much more in the Premier League.

Sunderland chiefs are also keen to add a fixed fee of just below £20million, so it will take a lot of haggling to get his future sorted.
Brentford would go to around £15m — while Burnley had bids rejected for him in the summer window.
Clarke’s senior career kicked off in 2018 with Leeds after spending nine years in the Whites’ youth ranks.
The winger then completed a big move to Tottenham only a year later.

However, the former England youth international only managed a total of four appearances throughout his three-year stint in North London.
That also included loan spells back at Leeds as well as Queens Park Rangers, Stoke and Sunderland.
The Black Cats then signed the forward on a permanent basis in 2022, just a few months after he joined on loan.
Clarke counts a total of 21 goals and 19 assists in 86 appearances so far with Sunderland. More

New goal line footage claims to prove ball stayed IN as VAR dominates Newcastle vs Arsenal clash

SHOCKING new footage appears to show the ball did stay ON the pitch before Newcastle’s winner against Arsenal. The Magpies ended the Gunners’ undefeated run in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at St James’ Park thanks to Anthony Gordon’s controversial winner.

VAR deemed Joe Willock kept the ball in play before building Anthony Gordon’s goalCredit: X / beINSPORTS_EN
Gordon broke the deadlock on 64 minutes with a highly questionable goal that demanded three separate VAR checks from the officials which totalled four minutes and six seconds.
Referees first tried to determine if the ball went out of play and then checked whether or not there was a subsequent foul before analysing a potential offside.
Replays were assessed at Stockley Park as VAR officials checked whether the ball had gone out before Joe Willock regained possession.
The ball had appeared to cross the touchline before it was crossed back into the North Londoners’ penalty area.

Gabriel Magalhaes then went down to the ground under the challenge of Joelinton before Gordon lashed the ball into an empty net.
VAR ultimately deemed there was no clear angle to show whether or not the ball went out before Willock’s cross.
They also determined Gabriel wasn’t fouled and the Gordon was onside.
Regarding the first matter, goal line footage from beIN SPORTS appear to agree with the officials.

Images prove that a tiny sliver of the ball was still on the line and was correctly considered to be in play before Newcastle hit the back of the net.
However, hosts Richard Keys and Andy Gray still argue the goal should have been chalked off.
That is because they insist there was both a foul on Gabriel and a handball by Joelinton in the build-up.
The VAR decision led to a furious reaction by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who described the refereeing as a “disgrace” and has promised to fight the controversial VAR ruling.
Arteta told Sky Sports: “I have praised my players for the performance and the way that we played – we didn’t deserve to lose the match.

“We lost the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It’s embarrassing. It’s a disgrace. That’s what it is, a disgrace.”
And when asked if he will be taking up his frustrations with the PGMOL, Arteta made it clear he would indeed be escalating things.
The Spanish tactician said: “Yeah. We will be taking it for many months. There is so much at stake and we put in so many hours.
“I am here to represent the football club and to get my team to compete at the highest level.

He has attracted attention from other clubs but Everton could make a move if they can find the funds.
Everton are already dealing with a rather turbulent campaign in the Premier League.
That is because it is less than two weeks since it was revealed the league had recommended the Toffees face a 12-point deduction in its case against them for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
If the Merseysiders end up getting that punishment, then the club will drop to bottom of Prem table and become embroiled in a relegation battle.
