Ex-Liverpool star Firmino lifts lid on ‘explosive’ feud between Salah and Mane and reveals he was the ‘firefighter’

Alongside Firmino, they formed a formidable attacking trio following Salah’s arrival in 2017.
During the next five years, Liverpool won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, with Firmino, Mane and Salah scoring a combined 427 goals.
However, this came despite an occasionally tense relationship between the African duo, which fan caught a glimpse of during a win over Burnley in 2019.
Mane was seen fuming with Salah for not passing to him, letting his frustration out after being subbed off by Jurgen Klopp.

Although both players spoke out against claims of a feud after the match, Firmino has now reflected on their relationship himself.
“I saw first-hand the looks, the grimaces, the body language, the dissatisfaction when one was mad at the other,” he told The Guardian.
“I could feel it. I was the link between them in our attacking play and the firefighter in those moments.
“For many, that disagreement between Sadio and Mo was the first; for some, the first and last. But I knew it had been brewing since the previous season, 2018–19. My instinct and my duty was to defuse the situation between them.

Mane, Firmino and Salah scored a combined 427 goals during five years as team-mates
“Salah and Mane had had their little problems before, but that time everything happened on the field, there for the world to see. That day, at Burnley, the lid came off.”
Discussing Mane as an individual, Firmino added: “Mane was more intense in both good and bad moments. He was the most explosive of the three of us.
“I was always talking to him, giving advice, trying to calm him down. I would tell him to find peace, play for the team, and stay relaxed.”
Mane would be the first of the three to leave Anfield as he departed for Bayern Munich eighteen months ago after six years on Merseyside.
But his spell in Germany was short-lived, after an alleged altercation with team-mate Leroy Sane.
Meanwhile, Firmino ended his eight-year stay with Liverpool this summer as he sealed a move to Saudi side Al-Ahli. More

But it could all have been so different, as he struggled in his first season.
Mirallas, now 36, was loving life at his old club Olympiacos – with his first child born in Greece.
When Everton came in with a £6million bid, however, the winger’s agent insisted that he make the move.
Opening up on the transfer while chatting to Eleven Belgium, Mirallas said: “When I signed in England I didn’t want to go there.

“I felt really good at Olympiacos, I felt good at the football level, at the family level as my son had just been born so there was stability.
“My agent really pushed it. I don’t regret it because it was one of my best spells, I spent seven years there, but I didn’t want to go.”
Elaborating on the emotional day he left Greece, he added: “I felt really good, my life was really good, there was a quality of life behind it and in England I had to start all over again.
“The day I left Olympiacos I cried; I didn’t want to leave.

“I arrived at Everton in August, it was 14 degrees, raining. I went ‘wow’. I left ten days after my son was born.”
Life at Goodison wasn’t all bad, but an early twist in his Toffees tale had Mirallas wanting to quit.
He continued: “In England it was great, the stadium and all that. The coach, David Moyes, wanted me to have everything prepared, I had a magnificent welcome and was well compensated but, in my head, I wasn’t prepared.
“Then I got injured and in October I phoned my agent and said I want to leave.
“He tells me I signed for five years but I said ‘do what you want but I don’t want to stay’.
“He says to me ‘you’re crazy, everyone wants to be in your place’ but I just said ‘call those in charge, I don’t want to stay’.”
Mirallas ultimately persevered, going on to have a successful stay at Goodison.
He made 186 appearances for the Toffees, scoring 38 goals and laying on 35 assists.
The 60-cap international spent his final 18 months at Everton away on loan back at Olympiacos and also Fiorentina.

The 42-year-old is currently on high demand after leaving Monaco last month.
The Mancunian has been linked with a move to United as part of a management shake-up if Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes his 25 per cent takeover and takes control of football operations.
The ex-Southampton and Tottenham chief recently moved back to his native North West, fuelling talk that the Red Devils would be his next port of call.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Mitchell – who is still a free agent – was seen at the stands of the Coliseum on Monday watching Getafe beat Cadiz 1-0 thanks to Borja Mayoral’s winner.

Greenwood started for Jose Bordalas’ side and also provided the assist on 76 minutes.
The striker is spending the season with the Spanish side on loan from United.
The ex-England international has amassed three goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions.
Greenwood was arrested in January last year following charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control.

He was later charged with the offences, before the case was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February.
United subsequently launched an internal probe, before deciding that Greenwood could not continue his career at Old Trafford.
Mitchell continues to be monitored by United but Erik ten Hag’s side is facing competition from Saudi Arabia.
Saudi clubs are looking at the transfer guru, who scouted the likes of Son Heung-Min, Sadio Mane and Dele Alli, as they plan the next phase of their recruitment drive. More

But his Instagram story has offered some hopeCredit: Instagram @lawestt_
The defender looked to be doing sit ups and was hooked up to a machine that was strapped around his thigh.
Fofana has had rotten luck with injuries stemming all the way back to 2021.
Then still playing for Leicester, the defender suffered a broken leg on the eve of the 2021-22 season against Villareal which ruled him out for seven months.
After returning in March 2022 to play the closing stages of the season for Leicester, he made the £70million transfer to Chelsea that summer.

The defender then suffered a knee injury in Chelsea colours in October of that year which ruled him out until February 2023.
After returning, he played 13 times for the Blues before suffering the devastating blow of an ACL injury in pre-season.
A time frame has not been put on his return and he was widely expected to miss the entirety of this season.
But his Instagram story does offer some hope for Chelsea fans that they may see him before this season ends.

When asked about Fofana’s latest injury in the summer, manager Mauricio Pochettino said that he and his staff are keen to give Fofana all the support they can for him to return to the team.
He said: “We can only help him and to be again with the team we know it is tough. We need to help him and wish him all the best. We need to keep going, the competition is there. The competition doesn’t wait for anyone and we need to be ready.”
On whether Fofana could feature this season, Pochettino said: “I hope yes. You have all of the information that this is difficult. He is evolving in a different way but hopefully his recovery goes very well.”
Christopher Nkunku is another long-term absentee with a knee injury that Blues fans could see soon.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino said after Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Tottenham that he has hope that Nkunku may be back after the November international break. More

The absence of the three-goal forward is another big blow for boss Vincent Kompany – whose team are joint bottom of the table after taking just four points from their first 11 matches.
Foster has scored three of the team’s eight league goals this term – making him the Clarets’ top scorer.
With only a single win this season against newcomers Luton – the newly promoted side is struggling to find their form.
But after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Everton it is not looking promising for Burnley who next face Arsenal on Saturday. More

In the first half alone there were four disallowed goals, three red card checks and two penalty checks.
Chelsea had another goal disallowed in the second half, but they went on to win the match 4-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer’s first-half penalty.

According to The Telegraph, early indications show the centre-back will be sidelined until January “at the earliest”.
However, the Evening Standard report the Netherlands international is unlikely to go under the knife and will work on his rehabilitation with the North Londoners’ medical staff at Hotspur Way.
The 22-year-old appeared to have popped his hamstring during the first half of Monday’s dramatic derby against Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Van de Ven, who joined last summer for £43million from Wolfsburg, sustained the injury in the first minute of stoppage time and was barely able to stand on his feet as he was carried away by physios.

Tottenham endured an intense encounter against the Blues, who ended their undefeated run in the Premier League with a 4-1 triumph.
Manager Ange Postecoglou saw his injury list grow significantly with Van de Ven’s blow as star man James Maddison also came out with an ankle knock.
The Dutchman and Maddison join Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon in the physio room.
To make matters worse, Richarlison revealed he will soon undergo surgery on his pelvis.

This has left Postecoglou’s squad quite depleted as he also lost Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie, who were both sent off.
Romero will be out for the next three games while Udogie was slapped with a one-match suspension.
The Australian tactician is now seriously short of centre-backs as he may have to call upon 18-year-old Ashley Phillips to team up with Eric Dier.
Another option is to play the likes of Emerson Royal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Ben Davies out of position. More
