Brennan Johnson has proved he can mix it with Son Heung-min and Co at Spurs… now he can show it for Wales, says Rob Page

BRENNAN JOHNSON has already proved he can mix it with the best at Tottenham. That’s the view of Johnson’s Wales boss Robert Page, who has hailed the forward’s early promise since his £47.5million move from Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old impressed in Monday’s chaotic 4-1 Premier League loss to Chelsea before he was sacrificed in the 34th minute by Ange Postecoglou for Eric Dier following Cristian Romero’s red card.
Johnson is set to have a bigger role to play for high-flying Tottenham at Wolves on Saturday with Richarlison out with a pelvic injury and James Maddison struggling with an ankle knock.
But Page reckons the signs are positive for Johnson, who set up Son Heung-min for a first-half goal against the Blues which was disallowed for offside.
When asked if the Wales star now belongs at the same level as Spurs captain Son, Page replied: “Absolutely. We’ve all seen the potential.

“When I worked with him at the 21s and the younger age groups I could see he was going to go there.
“It’s taken him a little bit of time to get up to that standard, he’s shown glimpses of it.
“What is important now is that he sustains that level by playing with those players and the demands of the manager (Ange Postecoglou) there and he will absolutely do that.
“He’s at a big club now pushing for the top four so the demands on him will be extreme.

“The squad of players he’s got around him now will be slightly different to what he is used to but even by training with the players he’s with will bring him to another level.
“He looked good for half an hour against Chelsea.  The goal he set up for Son was incredible. He’s finding a position that suits him.
“When you go down to 10, it has an impact on the team and unfortunately it was Brennan who was substituted.
“From a selfish point of view I was quite pleased.”
Following Saturday’s trip to Molineux, Johnson will link up with Page for Wales’ crunch Euro 2024 qualifiers against Armenia and Turkey.
Two wins will book a finals spot for the Dragons in Germany next summer.
Johnson missed last month’s 2-1 win over Croatia due to a hamstring injury and has only made five Spurs appearances so far since the deadline day move in September
But Page has no concerns over his fitness this season.
Ex-Sheffield United defender Page, 49, added: “When you go to a new club with different methods and different training sometimes you pick up niggles because you are used to training in a certain way.
“That’s all he’s had. I’m not concerned at all.”
Versatile forward Johnson can play on both flanks as well as through the middle as a number nine.
But what is his best position?
Page said: “I’m not going to pigeon-hole him as a nine. Brennan is proving at club level that he can play a multitude of positions. He can play one of the front three easily.
“We’ve got Kieffer (Moore) as a nine but Brennan can play that as well. He did that for us in Latvia. I like him as a nine purely because of his pace.

“There’s not a defender out there who’s going to want to play against him and DJ (Daniel James) because pace frightens defenders.
“He’s showing it at Tottenham on the left and again that suits us with the way we play now and it’s good to have that competition for places.” More

Dave Kidd: From nightclubs to nightmares… Marcus Rashford’s Copenhagen red card sums up Man Utd star’s horror season

THERE was a wistful smile on Marcus Rashford’s face when ref Donatus Rumsas brandished the red card.It was the look of a man convinced that everything which can go wrong, is going wrong.
Rashford had a wistful smile as the referee brandished a red cardCredit: Getty
Back in Manchester United’s team after a “minor knock” and a visit to a nightclub described as “unacceptable” by boss Erik ten Hag, Rashford was sent off for the first time in five years and  for only the  second time in his professional career.
And this as his United goal drought stretched to 11 appearances while Ten Hag’s side plunged to the bottom of their Champions League group, facing the ignominy of an early exit from Europe’s elite club competition.
As United’s players slunk away from FC Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium — having twice  conceded two goals in quick succession and been defeated 4-3 by the Danish champions — news emerged that Rashford’s brother and agent, Dane, had been arrested in the United States on a domestic violence charge.
Rashford, 26, looks like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and his individual struggles are symbolic of a wider malaise at  Old Trafford.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
He is a man of substance — a social justice crusader  and an MBE, as well as an outstanding footballer. And as the local hero of this side, Rashford carries extra responsibility, especially in a squad so short on leadership qualities.
Last season, the England  forward netted 30 times for United — sharp, direct, confident and often unplayable.
This term, he has lacked conviction and self-belief in a team bereft of attacking  identity.
He will now be suspended for United’s Group A trip to Istanbul, where they face Galatasaray in 19 days’ time.

Lose there and the Red  Devils will be eliminated from the Champions League.
Draw and they will need to defeat Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich in their final group match on December 12 to stand any chance of advancing.
After United’s episode of Nordic noir in Copenhagen, Ten Hag, in his trademark roll-neck sweater, resembled a lighthouse keeper battered by one too many storms, desperately clinging to the hope  of a change in the shipping forecast.
The Dutchman bemoaned his team’s ill fortune, in having conceded four penalties in as many Champions League matches this season — three of them, he claimed, undeserved.
He said: “We are in a season where we have to deal with many decisions against us but a season is long and at one point it will turn in our favour.”
Yet while Ten Hag was  correct to complain that VAR’s slow-mo replays and freeze framing had made Rashford’s challenge on Elias Jelert look worse than it was, the tyranny of technology is the age in which he is operating.
Rashford looks like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and his individual struggles are symbolic of a wider malaise at  Old Trafford.Dave Kidd
Under current interpretations of the laws, Rashford’s dismissal was almost certainly correct.
And when Ten Hag  praised his team’s “spirit” and “resilience”, it felt as if he had   forgotten those two quickfire doubles at the end of either half which condemned United to defeat.
Truly spirited and resilient teams do not concede in such a manner, even when reduced to ten men.
And plenty of United’s  opponents — not least  Wolves, Nottingham Forest  and Brentford, all edged out at Old Trafford — will disagree with Ten Hag’s assessment  that the Red Devils have been bedevilled by extreme misfortune.
You make your own luck and United — beaten nine times in 17 matches this season — are too often the manufacturers of their own downfall.
Their forwards do not score in the Premier League and their defenders keep conceding poor goals in the Champions League.
Rashford’s strike in September’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal is the only league goal scored by a United forward this season.
His best performance of the campaign came in England’s impressive 3-1 Euro 2024  qualifying win over champions Italy last month — where he netted with a thumping finish and played with far greater freedom in a confident side.
There, Rashford looked like a man happy for some respite from his club’s miserable plight.
At United, it is unlikely that there is a united front behind Ten Hag, with some players believed to be unhappy at the handling of the ostracised Jadon Sancho, as well as Harry Maguire, who had been largely frozen out until recently.
Sancho still finds himself ostracised by Manchester UnitedCredit: Alamy
Long-term injuries to Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Luke Shaw have hindered United, for sure, but Ten Hag’s is a lavishly expensive squad.
Three of his own  major  signings — Antony, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat — started on the bench in  Copenhagen.
    This is no skeleton staff.
Too many of Ten Hag’s  players are underperforming, especially in that misfiring  forward line.
That the Dutchman’s job is probably safe, even if United are dumped out in the group stage, owes much to the uncertainty at boardroom level and an impending regime change.
Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe is expected to take control of football operations after  purchasing a 25 per cent stake in United.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe could sack THREE Man Utd chiefs including CEO Richard Arnold when he takes over club on Monday

SIR JIM RATCLIFFE could swing the axe on THREE senior Manchester United chiefs after his £1.3bn buy-in is complete. Ratcliffe is set to take over 25 per cent stake of United on Monday.

CEO Richard Arnold’s job is in jeopardyCredit: PA
The British billionaire will immediately control United’s football operations as the Glazer family take a back seat.
Ratcliffe, 71, is already planning a massive overhaul of the club’s player scouting and acquisition network.
And that means the jobs of CEO Richard Arnold, football director John Murtough and director of football operations David Harrison are all at risk.
Harrison was only appointed in February.

But Ratcliffe is concerned how the trio have continued to oversee a succession of expensive purchases following the departure of previous chief Ed Woodward.
In the last decade following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, United have spent a whopping £1.4bn on players.
And lifelong United supporter Ratcliffe is stunned so much has been spent in exchange for so little success.
During that time, Old Trafford chiefs have coughed millions on a number of flops.

That includes a club record £89m for Paul Pogba, £85.5m on Antony, £75m on Romelu Lukaku, £73m on Jadon Sancho, £59.7m on Angel Di Maria, £44.5m on Anthony Martial and £35m on Donny van de Beek.
But United haven’t won the title since 2013 and have banked just one FA Cup, two League Cups and a Europa League title since Fergie won 28 major trophies during his glittering reign.
Erik ten Hag has spent £374m in initial fees since taking charge.

But Ratcliffe accepts the Dutchman has credit in the bank following last season’s third-place league finish and Carabao Cup success.
He also concedes Ten Hag was brought in 18 months ago on the back of a succession of failures before him – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
Ratcliffe has held discussions with co-chairman Joel Glazer over United’s whole football structure.
The self-made Ineos chemicals billionaire has made it clear he will focus on this side of the operation and his buy-in is expected to spark a series of new appointments.

Manchester United and Arsenal were credited with interest before Liverpool had a £111million bid accepted by Brighton.
Boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed that a deal had been agreed, only to be left with egg on his face when Caicedo rejected the Reds because he was hellbent on joining Chelsea.
The Blues eventually thrashed out a British-record £115m swoop for Caicedo, thanks to a helping hand from their previous record signing.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Fernandez revealed: “I called and told him that he had to accept and come because Chelsea is a great and ambitious club.

“And I have to thank God for giving me the chance to play alongside him at Chelsea because we all know the great player he is, but he is also a fantastic person, so I’m thankful he chose Chelsea.”
The Blues signed Argentine World Cup hero Fernandez in a £107m deal back in January.
On his conversation with Fernandez, Caicedo admitted: “It was a nice chat.
“I mean, the fact that a world champion was phoning you, one of the best midfielders in the world… receiving that call was very nice and he convinced me to come here.

“He said it was a great club, that there are many young players, there was a togetherness here.
“I have always enjoyed the bond in a team because I think that, if there is that bond, we can deal with any situation we may face: pressure, everything. So, that’s what motivated me to come here.
“Now, I’m enjoying playing alongside him, in training as well, in rondos. We are always together.
“So, I’m very happy and I’m trying to do things better every day, as Enzo said, to be a good example for everyone at the club.”
Alongside Conor Gallagher, Caicedo and Fernandez have formed a new-look midfield trio at Stamford Bridge – with previous stalwarts N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho all having left in 2023.

Jurgen Klopp can’t hide his anger as he’s forced to do a press conference in a TENT next to celebrating Toulouse fans

JURGEN KLOPP could not hide his anger after being forced to do his post-match press conference in a TENT surrounded by rowdy Toulouse fans. Liverpool were beaten 3-2 in France and were denied a late equaliser due to a handball in the build up.
Jurgen Klopp could not hide his anger after his press conference was hijacked by Toulouse fans
It was safe to say Klopp was still fuming with the result and his mood was only worsened as Toulouse cheers filled the press conference room – which was staged in a the makeshift venue outside the stadium.
He blasted: “Who had the idea to do the press conference here? That will be a really interesting question. Wow.”
Klopp sighed and was even left head in hands as raucous Toulouse celebrations only picked up.
Liverpool found themselves 2-0 down when goals from Aron Donnum and Thijs Dallinga put the host’s ahead.

A Cristian Casseres Jr own goal narrowed the lead until substitute Frank Magri made it 3-1.

But a handball in the build up from Alexis Mac Allister forced VAR to chalk off the equaliser – leaving Klopp raging.

Premier League matches set for groundbreaking change starting THIS WEEKEND giving fans even more access

PREMIER LEAGUE fans will get all-new access with a fresh camera feature this weekend.Viewers tuning into TNT Sports for the early kick-off between Wolves and Tottenham are set to be able to watch from a very different angle.

That is because a player from each side will wear a bodycam for the warm-ups prior to the match at Molineux.
And that will enable supporters in their armchairs to see exactly what stars go through when preparing for a top-flight clash – including the various drills and shooting practice.
As reported by the Daily Mail, TNT and the Premier League have struck a historic deal to introduce the innovative new tech.
The two players will wear the special vests, created by Israeli company MindFly.

The vests are fitted with a shatterproof AI-powered stabilisation bodycam on the chest, providing a wide-angle view through a small hole in the kit.
The camera is said to be so light that it is barely noticeable for the footballers who are used to wearing base layers and GPS trackers.
However, Ifab laws prevent the cameras from being worn for competitive matches – which means fans won’t get the incredible insight once the Wolves vs Spurs clash gets underway on TNT Sports.
Premier League Head of Media Operations and Innovation, Rachael Nightingale, said: “Finding new ways to bring our fans closer to the action on the pitch is a key focus for us.

“After the success of the bodycam trials at the Premier League Summer Series, we are looking forward to seeing what results this test will deliver for TNT and our audiences around the world.”
Supporters got an insight into the future of live sports broadcasting when Youri Tielemans and Bruno Guimaraes wore the bodycams during pre-season in the USA.
Viewers were stunned to see the speed of the friendly game, requiring fast thinking and incredible fitness levels.
A similar camera on referee Peter Bankes during Fulham’s tie with Brentford also revealed just how tricky officiating can be – and what they must deal with when the ball is in and out of play.
An FA trial also saw refs wear bodycams in an attempt to clamp down on poor behaviour and language towards officials, including in grassroots football.
And in May, Moises Caicedo bizarrely wore a bodycam for the pre-match handshakes as Brighton hosted Manchester United.

David Raya’s agent gives behind-the-scenes lowdown on Arsenal transfer and Aaron Ramsdale won’t be happy

DAVID RAYA’s agent has revealed all about the keeper’s move to Arsenal… and Aaron Ramsdale might not like what he hears. The Spanish stopper joined on loan from Brentford in the summer, with the Gunners paying a £3million upfront fee with a £27m option to buy at the end of the season.

Agent Jaume Munell says that Arsenal had to fend off interest from Spurs, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in order to secure his client’s services.
And, in bad news for his new team-mate Ramsdale, Munell insists that Arsenal’s interest in the keeper predates the England star’s own £30million signing from Sheffield United in 2021.
In fact, Munell told AFTV that Arsenal only signed Ramsdale because he was an “easy option” compared to the complexities of signing Raya from Brentford at the time.
He said: “Arsenal showed interest for the first time three years ago in 2021. They tried to buy him but Brentford didn’t want to sell him at any price.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
“After they bought Ramsdale that was an easier option but David has always been the priority.
“This summer, he had just one year left on his contract with Brentford and Arsenal was the club that showed the most concrete interest and have always been our priority.
“Tottenham were also interested and made an official bid but it was refused because was lower than the £34.9m that Brentford wanted to sell him.
“Also Bayern Munich was interested and had an amazing offer but with no buy option included and for this reason, we’ve not accepted it.

“Bayern Munich didn’t understand our refusal because they thought that Raya would have been the backup keeper at Arsenal but as you can see it’s not like this. Also Manchester United and Chelsea made an inquiry but nothing concrete.”
Munell revealed that part of Arsenal’s long-term interest in Raya stems from their goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana.
Cana worked with Raya at Brentford before making the switch to North London to join The Gunners.
And he has sung the praises of Raya to the club’s hierarchy ever since.
Cana added: “Inaki and [Mikel] Arteta were key for the deal.
“They have been determined for the choice that we made to play for Arsenal, the club have a project and a philosophy that fit completely for David”.
The interview will not make for pretty reading for Aaron Ramsdale, who may leave the club in January.
Past reports have linked him with a move to Chelsea, with the Gunners wanting £60million for the keeper. More

Dutch legend says ‘everyone wants to play Man Utd’ and ‘fears big’ over Luton clash in damning verdict on Ten Hag’s side

United’s defeat has left their Champions League campaign on the brink.
It also means they have lost nine of their 17 matches in all competitions this term.
The Red Devils had led 2-0 via Rasmus Hojlund’s double against his old club.
But the match turned on Marcus Rashford’s controversial 42nd minute red card, with Copenhagen levelling before the break.

Bruno Fernandes’ penalty restored ten-man United’s lead on 69 minutes, but a pair of late Copenhagen goals consigned Ten Hag and Co to defeat.
Prem new-boys Luton travel to Old Trafford this Saturday.
And Gullit, 61, doesn’t believe the Hatters will be “afraid” of United.
Discussing last night’s match on beIN SPORTS, Gullit said: “I fear big.

“When I saw him [Ten Hag] on the pitch after that, he was very calm. I feel for him. They’re gonna get hammered this whole week.
“It doesn’t look good but the thing is, as a coach, you think to yourself that first 25 minutes was excellent. I can build on that. And then something happens and then it all collapses.”
On United’s predicament, Gullit added: “Nobody is afraid of them and everybody wants to play them because they all think they have a chance.
“That’s the energy you have to take care of. Every time you think they’ve stopped the bleeding by putting a plaster on it, then all of a sudden something comes out and put the plaster there [laughs].
“Today [Wednesday], again you start well and then all of a sudden something strange happens and then you are out of control.”
In addition to being on the brink of a Champions League exit and out of the League Cup, the Red Devils are eighth in the Premier League.
After last night’s game, a defiant Ten Hag said: “This squad is resilient. The whole season, so many decisions are against us, so many setbacks for injuries.
“Every time there is a spirit, there is a fight and we will keep going because I am sure and I said to the lads it will turn – on one moment in the season it will turn in our favour.”
