How Tottenham could line up after major transfer splurge including Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite

TOTTENHAM are on the hunt for a new centre-back in January amid their defensive crisis.Things were going swimmingly for Ange Postecoglou’s men until their clash with Chelsea earlier this month.

The affable Aussie lost Cristian Romero to suspension and Micky van de Ven injury during the chaotic London derby.
He subsequently fielded a makeshift backline comprised of Ben Davies and Eric Dier against Wolves, and is likely to have to do so again until Romero’s suspension ends in two games’ time.
According to the Mail, Spurs have drawn up a five-man shortlist of centre-backs they could target in January as extra cover for the oft-suspended Romero and crocked Van de Ven.
It is headed up by Premier League duo Marc Guehi and Jarrad Branthwaite.

While AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, Goncalo Inacio of Sporting Lisbon and Benfica’s Morato are also on their shortlist.
With Van de Ven’s injury set to keep him out until some time into the new year, it’s possible that a new acquisition would slot straight in next to Romero.
The Argentine had looked a calmer presence this season, prior to his reckless moment against Chelsea.
Should he be in top form, he would be the perfect man for a new centre-back to slot in next to.

Jarrad Branthwaite could partner Guehi if Romero gets another suspension
Guehi could even partner Van de Ven when the Dutchman recovers
Romero, 25, has averaged a red card every 18.75 appearances for Spurs, however.
So if he were to get suspended yet again, or injured, Tottenham may look to recruit two extra defenders in January.
This would be made more likely by a possible Dier departure.
The England international is out of contract at the end of the season and very unlikely to be handed a new one.
Spurs could look to cash in mid-season, with Dier’s former club Sporting Lisbon reportedly interested.
In the event that Tottenham get two centre-backs they could even field the likes of Guehi and Branthwaite together, giving real competition for places at the back.
Ahead of the defence, Spurs have recently been boosted by the return to fitness of Rodrigo Bentancur.
The Uruguayan can help add class to the Lilywhite’s engine room, which will be particularly handy during James Maddison’s injury lay-off.
Richarlison should return to fitness in the next few weeks after undergoing surgery, although Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon remain long-term absentees.

Halford added that he had never told anyone in football about his diagnosis.
Appearing on the Undr The Cosh podcast, the defender broke the news as he discussed his difficulties settling in at Sunderland.
He had joined the Black Cats from Reading in 2007 just six months after he had signed for the Royals.
“I haven’t told anyone this in the football world or anything but I’m on the spectrum of autism,” Halford bravely revealed.

“So, change, and not knowing at that time, fitting into a new group of people and changing, the way I live, where I live, being away from my family, my girlfriend at the time. I found it very, very hard.
“It was hard to interact with people. After training, I never wanted to go into the cafeteria because I didn’t want to be around. I felt awkward. It was just a weird sensation so I would just go home.”
However, it was different on the pitch, as he explained: “Being on the pitch is completely different, that’s my area, I can control myself there.
“But when it’s small intimate groups, I found it very difficult at that sort of time.”

Asked if it would have been easier to fit in at the Stadium of Light if he had gone straight into the team, he added: “Probably, because that’s how I found out about people, that’s how I interacted with people.
“Then obviously once they hear me on the pitch and know what type of person I am on the pitch, it’s a little bit easier to interact with people.”
Halford made just nine appearances for Sunderland and was loaned out twice before being sold to Wolves in 2009.
He was visibly emotional as he revealed more details about his diagnosis.
“I only found out, did the diagnosis after I had my son, when he was diagnosed,” Halford continued. “He was exactly the same as me when I was his age.”
During his career, the former England youth international has made over 500 club appearances, playing in the Premier League, Football League, Scotland and Ireland.
With 17 different clubs during his career, Halford believes those moves have helped him grow as a person.
“I always knew I was different in some kind of way, I just didn’t understand it.

“Football gave me that, where I was being put into so many new situations that I was able to grow.
“By the time I was moving to places like Portsmouth, I’d already had four or five moves and every time it was a lot easier to interact with people.
“I just learnt and I grew. I could just go into a new club today and be comfortable doing that.”
He also admitted he would still not have told anyone in football even if he had been diagnosed sooner.
“If I’d known that diagnosis at that time,” he told host Chris Brown. “I still wouldn’t have told anyone because I wanted to learn for myself.
“I wanted to grow as a person and make the mistakes that I needed to make in order to be better in the future.”
Halford now plays for non-league side Hashtag United, having joined the club last summer.
He even scored as the Tags clinched promotion to the seventh tier for the first time back in April.

Man Utd staring £110million black hole in face – just days before Sir Jim Ratcliffe completes huge takeover

MANCHESTER United are staring at a potential £110m black hole – just as Sir Jim Ratcliffe promises a bright new dawn.Ratcliffe is set to finally confirm his partial buy-out and take charge of United’s footballing future.

But even before Britain’s richest man can nestle his backside in the Old Trafford directors’ box, he faces the prospect of his first three weeks at United determining the next three YEARS.
That is because Erik ten Hag’s side face a make or break Champions League spell which will have massive financial and morale implications.
And even for a multi-billionaire who cannot easily count his riches, the impact on what Ratcliffe could then do to get United back to where they want to be would be significant.
This week, exactly 12 months after Ratcliffe first publicly registered his interest in an Old Trafford takeover, he is set to finally complete a rather lesser-scale agreement.
    Read More on Man Utd
United fans have grown increasingly restless as the drawn-out deal seems to have stalled approaching the finishing line, even if there are no indications of any genuine problems.
But the fans hoping that Ratcliffe’s arrival can transform the club after he paid £1.25bn for a 25 per cent stake and control over “football operations” may have to recalibrate their ambitions.
United’s horror defeat in Copenhagen before the international break leaves them perilously close to the brink of a humiliating Champions League group stage exit.
Bottom of their group with just two games to go, United must negotiate a trip to the infamous “Hell” of Galatasary’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium, scene of one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most miserable European upsets 30 years ago.

Even victory in Istanbul would require United to get at least a draw when Harry Kane – the striker they were so desperate to sign but could not get – and his new Bayern Munich side come to Manchester next month.
While defeat in Turkey would leave them in danger of even missing out on the consolation prize of a place in the Europa League.

That nightmare would cost United an initial £13.5m – missing out on £8.35m for qualification plus £5m in gate receipts – and the chance of earning a potential £60m.
But it would also almost certainly end ANY chance of United being invited to play in the first incarnation of Fifa’s expanded Club World Cup, and a share of the likely £1bn cash pot, in 2025.
Europe has 12 slots in the 32 team tournament to be played in the USA, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and this season’s Champions League winners earning automatic berths.
The other eight European places will be determined by the four-season “coefficient” table.
While senior Fifa figures had indicated only one place per nation would be allowed from that list – to ensure eight countries had teams involved – that is now understood to be subject to a rethink.
A cap of two per nation is being considered, with a final decision due to be made by Fifa at next month’s Council meeting in Jeddah.
The Red Devils could miss out on a huge amount of incomeCredit: Getty
Such a change – which still ensures qualification on sporting merit – would open the door to United getting the chance for a likely £50m windfall.
Bayern and Liverpool are effectively safe, with Jose Mourinho’s Roma, Inter, PSG and Villarreal currently the next in line.
United are seventh but only one one win ahead of Leipzig, while Porto would leapfrog the Old Trafford side as well if they win their final two group games and United lose both.
If that happens, United could finish the season no higher than ninth and out of the frame for the USA, joining fellow European giants Juventus and – unless they win the Champions League this term – Barcelona on the sidelines.
Such a scenario demonstrates that even a man of Ratcliffe’s wealth cannot influence everything and that events on the pitch have an impact off it as well.
Between those two games, the likely first home match of the Ratcliffe era will see him sit down to watch the club he has invested in face the team he tried to buy in 2022, when Chelsea visit Old Trafford.
Rebuffed then – he finally made a bid AFTER the deal with the Todd Boehly-led syndicate had been agreed – revenge might be sweet. And more than important as United seek to get back into the top four race.
That is the expectation of supporters and the Ineos involvement has been given Fergie’s seal of approval, with the legendary ex-boss telling the Gambling Zone: “I am optimistic about Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment in United.
“I am still a director of the club and I know Jim well. We shall have to see what he does but I am optimistic.”
One problem for Ratcliffe, for all his promises of investment, are Uefa and Prem financial rules.
Aside from the issue over multi-club ownership, where Ineos’ control of unlikely French title contenders Nice could mean United not able to play in Europe, new regulations mean teams playing in Uefa competitions can only spend 80 per cent of their revenue on wages and transfers next season, dropping to 70 per cent by 2025-26.
Even in the Prem, sides not in European football will be limited to spending between 85 and 90 per cent of their revenues on an annual basis.
Missing out on substantial revenues that rivals in the Prem will be earning will make that necessary overhaul harder to pull off.
Meanwhile, this weekend, while United face the backlash of Everton indignation at their unprecedented ten-point deduction, City and Liverpool will be going head to head in a match that might prove pivotal in the title race.
The sort of match United, under Fergie, pretty much assumed would involve them. That all seems a long time ago.

Howard Webb orders brutal clampdown on Premier League refereeing decisions with fewer penalties set to be awarded

REFS chief Howard Web has told Premier League officials they MUST clamp down on players waving imaginary cards.PGMOL boss Webb has also reiterated the need for refs to enforce directives penalising dissent.

And in a further statement of intent, Webb wants VAR officials to step in if “soft” penalties are wrongly awarded.
The former World Cup final whistler laid down his demands at the scheduled gathering of officials at their Loughborough base ahead of this weekend’s Prem resumption.
Webb pointed out that the early season directive to book – and if a second offence, send off – players showing imaginary cards after fouls appears to have been forgotten in recent weeks.
That inconsistency has been a complaint from fans up and down the country.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
And his message to the referees was that a policy that was put in place in August has to remain consistently applied throughout the campaign and in future years.
Webb is equally keen to ensure the strong line against dissent continues – as a way of enforcing better behaviour from players and managers alike.
This season has seen 88 Prem bookings for dissent, with Fulham top of the bad boy charts on 11 cautions for words or gestures.
Three players – Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta and Sean Longstaff of Newcastle – have been cautioned on three occasions.

Bosses behaving badly include Manchester United’s Erik ten Hag and Fulham chief Marco Silva, also each yellow carded three times.
But PGMOL and Prem bosses believe the strong push will improve player behaviour as they realise they will be punished for speaking out of turn.
Webb told club chiefs at Tuesday’s “shareholder” meeting that this season has so far seen NO incidents of mass confrontation, compared to eight such melees at this point last term.
New added time rules have seen the average match length rise to 101 minutes and 41 seconds, three minutes and 17 seconds longer than last season.
The ball has also been in play for 58 minutes and 29 seconds, up 223 seconds, nearly four minutes more, per game.
Webb also told clubs that he wanted a higher bar for penalty offences and planned to instruct VARs to intervene and recommend overturns when that threshold was not met.
The PGMOL boss has already publicly admitted Wolves were wrongly penalised twice in successive weeks when first Newcastle and then Sheffield United were given spot-kicks that should not have been awarded. More

Manchester City and Chelsea are waiting nervously given they could be hit with even bigger penalties – including relegation.
City were slapped with 115 Financial Fair Play charges in January while Chelsea are under investigation over transfers during Roman Abramovich’s reign.
And Hecky said: “It’s opened the door to other sanctions.
“We can’t just have one team punished, we need more if there have been breaches.

“The rules are there for a reason and they should be imposed, otherwise what’s the point?
“Everton will feel hard done by because it’s the first and the biggest punishment we’ve had in the Premier League, so that will only be seen as justifiable if others follow suit with bigger punishments.”
Sheffield United host fellow strugglers Bournemouth on Saturday on the back of four points against Wolves and Brighton.
After Everton joined them in the mire, Heckingbottom added: “While it initially knocks them down, they’ve shown they are more than capable of working their way out of it.
