My agent told me to ask Roy Keane transfer question – it was biggest mistake of my career and he never spoke to me again

SUNDERLAND flop Greg Halford made the worst first impression when he was signed at the Stadium of Light by Roy Keane in 2007.The Black Cats landed Halford from Reading following a £3.5million deal but a disastrous first meeting with then-manager Keane turned into “probably the biggest mistake” of his career.

The versatile defender, who currently plays for Hashtag United in the Isthmian League, was instructed by his agent to ask the Manchester United legend about his transfer plans before putting pen to paper.
The notorious Irish hardman didn’t take kindly at all to the then 22-year-old questioning him about the direction of the club.
That immediately landed the now 38-year-old straight into Keane’s bad books as the Sky Sports pundit never spoke to him again.
Halford told the Undr The Cosh podcast: “Keane was obviously keeping tabs on me for six months.

“I flew up there, met him, went into his office and I was told by my agent, ‘Ask him these sort of questions’. Like who else are you going to be signing? Because I was his first summer signing.
“I thought ‘if I’m coming from seventh-placed Reading I need to know what type of players you’re going to be bringing in, what your dreams and goals are for the next season’.
“So I asked him that question and oh my God, the daggers that I got.
“I then read his book and he’s got a whole chapter about me, he said ‘I should’ve just pulled the plug [on the transfer] there and then.’ He just over-exaggerates everything and it just wasn’t the case at all.

“Probably the biggest mistake I made in my football career was asking him that question. From that point, he never talked to me.”
Halford only managed a mere nine appearances for Sunderland until he fell out of favour on January 2008.
That was when the defender was sent out on loan to Charlton and another temporary stint soon followed at Sheffield United.
The ex-England Under-20 international left Sunderland in 2009 when he joined Wolves and ended up having quite a nomadic career. More

My dad won FA Cup, played in Premier League and was face of FIFA 95… now I’m making my own way in football

KRISTIAN THORSTVEDT may be trying to emulate his father’s achievements in football. But it would take something sensational for him to outdo Erik… in the game.

Erik Thorstvedt is best known for spending the final eight years of his career between the sticks for Tottenham.
The Norwegian played for Viking and Eik-Tonsberg in his homeland before a two-year stint at Borussia Monchengladbach in the mid-1980s.
A season at Goteborg followed before he was snapped up by Spurs in 1988 – four years after they initially tried to sign him but he was denied a work permit.
The 6ft 4in goalkeeper – nicknamed The Viking – joined as the replacement for Ray Clemence but had a nightmare start when he allowed a weak Nigel Clough shot to squirm through him as Spurs lost 2-1 against Nottingham Forest.

But he put the blunder behind him to become a popular figure at White Hart Lane, racking up 51 clean sheets in 195 appearances.
His greatest day for the club came in May 1991 at Wembley as he got his personal redemption against Forest in the FA Cup final.
Tottenham, led by superstars Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne, ran out 2-1 victors against Brian Clough’s side that featured a young Roy Keane in midfield.
Thorstvedt became the first Norwegian to win the FA Cup – with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, John Arne Riise and Erling Haaland among those to follow suit – and the following year was the second to appear in the newly-formed Premier League.

The 97-cap international stopper featured for his country and the 1994 World Cup but retired in 1996 after a series of back injuries and ‘Jumpers Knee’ condition that required 13 operations as Ian Walker took over as Spurs’ No1.
But before hanging up his gloves and stepping into a post-playing career in coaching, administration and punditry, Thorstvedt etched his name and face into football folklore.
The goalkeeper was selected as the poster-boy for EA Sports’ FIFA 95 game – with an image of Thorstvedt diving to make a save the front cover for that year’s edition.
Thorstvedt was succeeded by the likes of David Beckham, Ronaldinho, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe on the beloved video game before the major rebrand this year.
And with that incredible list of world-beating talent to grace the EA Sports’ covers, Erik’s son Kristian knows he has his work cut out to make it to the same dizzying heights.

The 24-year-old, born in Norway following Erik’s retirement, has also made the grade as a professional footballer after breaking through at Viking.
But unlike his father, Thorstvedt Jr is shining as a midfielder and helped the Norwegian club to promotion in 2018 as the young player of the year.
He joined Genk in January 2020, winning the Belgian Cup in his first full season.
But in 2022, the senior Norway international was on the move again when he signed a five-year deal at Sassuolo in Italy.
Thorstvedt missed out on Euro 2024 qualification alongside Haaland and Martin Odegaard.
But that does mean he will have the summer off to brush up on his golf skills, relax with his glamorous girlfriend Mille and spend time with his family – including dad Erik and his four siblings with sister Charlotte who is a model and former MTV presenter.

The England international has been undergoing a difficult campaign as he lost his No1 spot to David Raya, who arrived on loan from Brentford in the summer.
However, Raya couldn’t play against his parent club and so Ramsdale returned between the sticks.
The 25-year-old had some shaky moments in the early stages of the game, but grew in confidence and snuffed out some late danger.
After the final whistle, Arteta and every Arsenal star approached Ramsdale and embraced him in a brilliant show of team unity as he strives for more minutes ahead of Euro 2024.

Benrahma’s new agent is well-connected among the leading Saudi outfits and has recently been to London for a face-to-face meeting with Hammers boss David Moyes.
If the bid comes in, West Ham may accept as Benrahma, 28, is not guaranteed a place in the team  these days and his appearances and game time have been reduced.
Moyes will not want to push Benrahma out, especially with Europe still on the fixture list — but the right cash may sway the decision.
The winger joined the Irons initially on a loan deal in 2020 from Brentford.

However, in the January transfer window the club exercised the right to buy Benrahma for £25million plus £5million in add-ons.

    Running the show
Bruno Guimaraes was instrumental in everything good about Newcastle this afternoon.
He took a couple of late kicks later on in the game, which was about as close as the Chelsea midfield got to him all afternoon.
His touch map shows he was everywhere.

    The numbers
The stats behind the 90 minutes – a bit more one-sided than the half time stats anyway!
19 fouls conceded by Chelsea, many needless too.
Newcastle clinical, scoring four of their five efforts on target.

    Bounceback
Eddie Howe was full of praise for his players for their character to bounce back from the Bournemouth defeat.
Speaking to PLP, he said: “It was a real statement of character within the squad. We really asked the players to step up, and we really deserved to win. Big positives from today.
“The leaders within the group set the tone – Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie. They make sure we don’t surrender.”
    Debuts
Eddie Howe was afforded the luxury of giving three of his youngsters who made up the bench some minutes for their debuts.
Michael Ndiweni, Amadou Diallo and Alex Murphy all came on towards the end of the game for minutes they’ll never forget.

    Poch blast
Mauricio Pochettino blasted his side’s display this afternoon – and has branded it their WORST of the season so far.
He told PLP: “It was our worst game of the season. It was tough to be in the stands. We cannot complain about the result, we did not read the game from the beginning.
“We did not play how we should play, we showed a lack of intensity and energy.
“Even after we scored, at 1-1, it was a chance for us to force them to play deep, but it was so easy for Newcastle. That is why I am so upset with the performance.”
    Where we stand
How the table looks ahead of tonight’s late game.
Newcastle creep just three points behind Spurs in 4th after their win.
Chelsea left languishing in 10th, with the gap to West Ham in 9th now four points.
Only Man City have a better goal difference than Newcastle at this stage.

    Around the grounds
The other scores from today’s games around the Premier League – with every team scoring!
    Man City 1 Liverpool 1
    Burnley 1 West Ham 2
    Luton 2 Crystal Palace 1
    Nottingham Forest 2 Brighton 3
    Sheffield United 1 Bournemouth 3
    Where now for the Blues?
An abject performance from Chelsea in that second half as they were blown away.
After a recent rejuvenation, that’s now four goals conceded in successive Premier League games.
And they’ll be without James and Cucurella next weekend, too.
    Much to ponder for Poch….
    The report
It was an even first half before Newcastle blew Chelsea out the water in the second half.
Alexander Isak’s opener was cancelled out by a wonderful Raheem Sterling free kick.
Jamaal Lascelles then headed Newcastle back in front on the hour mark before a Thiago Silva howler let Joelinton in to make it 3-1 within 90 seconds.
Reece James was then sent off for a second yellow card with 15 minutes to play before Anthony Gordon wrapped it up with a fourth.

    FULL TIME!!!
A huge win for the hosts at St James’ and four goals too.
    NEWCASTLE 4-1 CHELSEA
    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    95. Newcastle not forcing it now and keeping the ball for fun under little pressure.
    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    91. Ritchie shown a yellow card for delaying the restart before a brief head-to-head with Mudryk.
Newcastle bring a couple of their youngsters off the bench for two more debuts!

    OFF: Gordon & Miley
    ON: Diallo & Ndiweni

    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    89. Five goals scored today and five minutes added on at the end of the 90 minutes.
Can Newcastle get five of their own?
Ritchies got in down the right and tried to pick out Miley but Enzo gets it away.
    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    87. Caicedo this time with a kick on Guimaraes.
Bruno is held back as he charges after the substitute. Daft foul from frustration.

    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    85. After their battle on international duty, Enzo tries to leave one on Guimaraes who dithers on the ball.
Soft free kick in the centre circle.
    Newcastle subs:

    OFF: Almiron and Lascelles
ON: Dummett and Alex Murphy – 19yo on for his debut

    Chelsea sub:

    OFF: Sterling
    ON: Madueke

    Newcastle 4-1 Chelsea
    83. Brilliant from Miguel Almiron out on the left who cuts inside and scoops a great ball in behind for Gordon who scampers away.
His run is timed to perfection but he’s sent wide on the left.
He manages to cut back inside on his right foot inside the area and fires a low strike across Sanchez and into the bottom corner!
    GOOOOOAAAAAALLLL!!!!
IT’S FOUR! ANTHONY GORDON WITH A GREAT FINISH AND IT’S GAME OVER!
    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    82. Bruno Guimaraes wins the ball off Sterling on the edge of his own box and drives up to halfway as both Sterling and Cucurella nip at his heels.
They’ve both been booked and he shrugs them both off with ease and gets Newcastle forward again.

    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    81. Newcastle sub with less than 10 minutes to play:

    OFF: Isak
    ON: Ritchie

    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    80. Colwill flies through the back of Almiron on the touchline and it’s another Newcastle free kick, near the halfway line.
Colwill is also shown a yellow card. They’re racking up now!
    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    78. Trippier’s delivery is good this time and almost finds Lascelles again but it’s well defended by Colwill who steers it away.
    Newcastle will come again though….
    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    77. Cucurella fouls Livramento on the Newcastle left.
He is then shown a yellow card for DISSENT! Another absolutely stupid booking for Chelsea.
He’s also now suspended for next week!
    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    What a save from Sanchez!
    75. Newcastle piling on the pressure now. Intricate football down the right sees Bruno Guimaraes picking the ball up on the edge and striking at goal, which is blocked.
Schar then picks up the clearance and drives 20 yards before firing low at goal and it’s flying in but for a diving save from Sanchez to palm away.

    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
Chelsea sub after that red card:

    OFF: Palmer
    ON: Colwill

    Newcastle 3-1 Chelsea
    73. Foolish from James, especially as captain.
His first yellow card comes from kicking the ball away. That one, he tried a fancy flick to take it back towards his own goal and away from Gordon.
The Newcastle man reads it and is driving towards the box and is clipped and brought down. No complaints from James who gives the armband to Silva and trudges off. More

That wasn’t the kind of result Guardiola hoped for amid the Treble winners’ bid to defend the Prem title.
But the Spanish tactician also seemed unhappy with the atmosphere at the Etihad.
Guardiola turned to the home crowd at some point during the match “with his fingers in his ears”.
That was because it was “unusually quiet” for a game as big as this between two Premier League title rivals.

Guardiola explained during his post-match interview with Sky Sports as he admitted he wanted “some more noise” from the home end.
However, the Spaniard was very pleased with City’s “excellent performance” against Liverpool.
The 52-year-old head coach was especially satisfied with how the Citizens defended against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Guardiola told the BBC: “That was an excellent performance. I am really proud that after eight years we are still playing that way.

    BACK UNDERWAY!
Newcastle get the game under way for the second period!
    Here they come
Newcastle are first to emerge for the second half closely followed by the visitors.
A big second half to come.
    The numbers behind the action
The first half stats show there wasn’t much between the sides at the break.
Nick Pope with more to do than his opposite number with a couple of decent saves.
Trippier’s free kick and Joelinton’s sitter both missing the target.

    Level at the break
Newcastle took the lead on 13 minutes when Alexander Isak marked his return with a cool finish.
Lewis Miley made the goal with a delightful little pass through.
Raheem Sterling won and then converted a free kick 10 minutes later to level the scores.
It was a peach of a finish from the winger who continues his fine start to the season.
Trippier hit the bar with his own free kick in a competitive first half.

    HALF TIME!
That foul signals the end of the first 45 minutes.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
45+3. Joelinton catches James with an arm on halfway and picks up a yellow card.
    Sums his half up really.
James then hits Gordon with the free kick and Newcastle break away with Isak picking up possession inside the box. A foul is given against the striker but that looked a bit soft.
    Sums his half up too.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
45+1. Trippier’s cross in is poor again. Sanchez catches under no pressure.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    45. Three minutes added on
James fouls Livramento on halfway as the home side go in search of a goal before the break.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    44. Good move from Newcastle again as they break forward.
Almiron, Miley and Trippier all involved before Joelinton receives it 30 yards from goal.
He missed from seven yards earlier so no idea why he thinks he’ll score from 30 yards on his left foot. His effort flies 20 yards over the bar.

    OFF THE BAR!!
Kieran Trippier’s free kick strikes the top of the bar and goes over.
Sanchez nowhere near it and it could’ve been another peach!
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    40. A good bit of defending from Trippier intercepts a pass through and gets Newcastle going forward.
Livramento feeds Gordon and drives 30 yards before being tugged back 25 yards from goal.
It’s on the left of centre but probably just within Trippier’s range.
Ugochukwu shown a yellow card for that foul.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    39. Sterling sent clear again down the left and his every touch still being booed by the home fans.
He settles for a corner off Trippier as another counter attack looked to be effective.
    Lascelles heads Palmer’s delivery clear.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    What a chance for Gallagher!
    36. Nick Pope with a calamitous mistake when trying to pass out and finds Gallagher on the edge of the box.
He has space to take a touch and move inside on his left foot before an abysmal finish from 12 yards sees the ball trickle behind for a goal kick. Poor all round!
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    35. Palmer again the orchestrator as he drives through midfield and finds Sterling on the corner of the box on the left.
He makes the overlapping run as Sterling faces up to Trippier, but the winger’s pass back is overhit and away for a goal kick.

    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    32. Badiashile wins the header from the corner but Pope collects comfortably under his own crossbar.
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    GREAT SAVE!
    31. Good play from Palmer and James who play a one-two 25 yards from goal to get the skipper clear down the right.
He lays the ball into Enzo’s path 20 yards from goal and he whips an effort at goal which Pope parries behind at full stretch!
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    29. Good response from Newcastle who are back on the front foot.
Schar’s ball over the top gets Trippier in behind but he can’t get his cross right.
Almiron then swings an inswinging ball in from the right which bounces through the six-yard box and behind for a goal kick. Isak couldn’t quite reach it.

    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    WHAT A MISS!
    26. Trippier’s ball in finds Joelinton all alone seven yards out and he heads it wide!
He missed a sitter against Dortmund just a couple of weeks ago with his head when he should have scored – somehow this was worse.
He loses Gallagher and tries to guide it into the net instead of just hitting the target. Incredible
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
    25. Thiago Silva with an attempted bit of skill down by his own corner flag.
Absolutely no idea how he does it, but he nutmegs himself and falls over – conceding the corner. It’ll be one to look out for later, and will be shown if Newcastle score from it!
    Newcastle 1-1 Chelsea
He might’ve bought that free kick but he certainly put it away emphatically!
Sterling goes over the wall and into the top corner from 22 yards – Pope didn’t move.
    Game on, one each!
    GOOOOAAALLL!!!
IT’S A PEACH FROM RAHEEM STERLING AND CHELSEA DRAW LEVEL!
    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea
    22. Big chance for Chelsea here as they’re awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal.
Sterling sent free by Jackson and he only has Schar to beat. Trippier gets back and comes together with Sterling, who goes down under very little contact.
Trippier is shown a yellow card for that and it’s a big opportunity.
    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea
Gordon actually slipped moving into space. He does actually manage to get back to his feet.
As he does so, Joelinton goes to ground holding his hamstring.
Both do manage to get to their feet.
    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea
    19. Chelsea manage to get their foot on the ball for a short period after that constant pressure from the hosts.
Sterling loses out to Trippier and Newcastle break forward.
Worrying scenes though as Anthony Gordon goes down off the ball holding his groin. Surely not another one.
    Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea
    17. Trippier’s ball in is headed clear by Cucurella but Newcastle keep the pressure on.
Eventually Miley finds himself with room on the edge and strikes a volley at goal, which hits his own captain.
More pressure on the ball sees them win a throw-in high up. More
