Kalvin Phillips in line for huge transfer to Euro giants with Premier League sides behind in £45m race for Man City star

JUVENTUS are leading the race to sign England midfielder Kalvin Phillips next month.  The Manchester City bit-part player knows he needs a move in the January window to keep his Three Lions Euro 2024 dream alive.

There is plenty of interest in the £45million former Leeds man.
But the Italian giants are showing the most — and Phillips is interested in trying his luck abroad.
Phillips, 27, turned down the chance to go on loan in the summer but has just one start this season in the EFL Cup.
His chances of action will not improve either with John Stones close to a return from injury.

Juventus, though, will face “intense” competition for Phillips’ signature as Newcastle are also interested.
In fact, the Magpies have had a boost in their hopes of landing the England international.
The midfielder is seen as the ideal option to replace the suspended Sandro Tonali.
Tonali was slapped with a 10-month ban in October due to betting breaches.

It has been reported that City would not stand in Phillips’ way if he decided to move to Newcastle.
West Ham and Tottenham have also expressed interest ahead of the January transfer window.
Phillips has amassed a total of 29 appearances since his arrival from Leeds last year. More

It would’ve been better if VAR had never existed, here’s the Premier League rule change I’d introduce to sort it out

INTO the rumpus about VAR, a new variant steps.Sin bins have long been of interest, even to an experiment in lower leagues which has been proclaimed a success.
VAR hasn’t improved football, claims SunSport columnist Karren BradyCredit: Rex
Bins have long been acceptable in rugby too and many other sports.
I’m no expert on brutes hurtling into each other at speed but it can be brief entertainment amid the endless gaps for head injuries and checking what a pitchside telly made of things.
No, not wrestling, I mean Sir Clive Woodward’s sport.
Now the International Football Association Board (IFAB, although not so fab after VAR introduction) are declaring serious interest in sin bins.

It’s temporary ten-minute dismissals for offences like dissent. No wonder when dissent leapt from 174 offenders to 345 in our pro game last season.
It’s a blight but it’d be useful to know how many offences occurred after dubious VAR rulings which have left football feeling like it’s being strangled.
VAR should be limited to offside, goal-line checks . . . and little else.
It’s now a ref’s crutch rather than an aid and games are often decided by VAR stinkers, with Newcastle’s Champions League draw at Paris Saint-Germain this week the most recent example.

Changes since the Premier League was founded in 1992 are prodigious and mostly positive but include VAR.
Sir Bobby Charlton and Terry Venables, both of whom died this autumn, were not much involved in the Prem as it grew from its infancy.
It became rich and influential and, as a player and manager, Venables in particular must have been envious of rewards in the latter years of his 80.
Twice capped by England, he was a good enough midfielder to bank more than £100,00-a-week these days.

A clever and admired man, his CV included a LaLiga title with Barcelona, an FA Cup with Tottenham and numerous promotions, so he’d have regarded £100,000 as penny-pinching.
Charlton was a football great as good as George Best in a Manchester United forward line that also boasted another exciting player in Denis Law.
I doubt there has ever been a better front three anywhere but English football then wasn’t rich enough to compete with foreign big shots for stars.
It is different today in a world where you can bring in  players from, say, South Korea to North Macedonia.
It was the Prem who supercharged the change and now their squads  are only 30 per cent British on average.
But Scottish players are nearly as rare as 100 per cent proof whisky.
Not all changes are for the best, though, and although the temptation to cheat has always existed, VAR appears to have encouraged players to take penalty area dives and fake head injuries in order to waste time.

But better coaching has heightened entertainment and helped attract capacity crowds to 95 per cent of games and a massive overflow on television.
Once regarded as the enemy at the gate, TV is now beloved as publisher and paymaster. More

Vincent Kompany will be feeling the pressure, but Burnley can fly up the table if they just beat Sheffield United

ANYONE going to Turf Moor on Saturday expecting a footballing spectacle between Burnley and  Sheffield United, think again. This will be an old-fashioned slogger of a match. It will be about grinding it out, however ugly.
Burnley boss Vincent Kompany can turn things around if he beats Sheffield UnitedCredit: Getty
It’s the old cliche of a six-pointer and this is the ultimate definition of one.
To get a three-point gap over your rivals at the bottom is huge but I feel it’s bigger for Burnley.
While they haven’t been great, we can see how they want to play and they have been close in a few games but the pressure will soon start to crank up on boss Vincent Kompany, especially if they lose this one.
I don’t think he is going to be out of a job — he has achieved so much at that club in such a short space of time.
    Read More on Football
But everyone expects Sheffield United and Luton to go down.
Burnley’s owners will be thinking: “I thought we had a better team than them? We won the Championship. Why are we below both of them? Why are they winning and we’re not?”
In those sorts of games, as a player, you should be really excited. For these clubs, they are always the underdogs. There aren’t many games where you go into matches thinking you should win in the Prem. This is one of them.
All it takes is one victory. You would be surprised how just one good result can springboard your entire season, especially if it is against a rival or it comes at a pivotal time.

In my first season up with Watford in the Prem in the 2015-2016 campaign, we drew our first three games and then lost away to Manchester City.
Our next game at home to Swansea felt big. They were a good team but we needed a first home win and we got it — a scrappy 1-0 down to ten men for most of the second half.
From our next 13 games, we picked up 23 points, which basically kept us up.
I remember at training in the days that followed, there was a feeling of “We belong here. We’ve made it”. All that self-doubt and insecurity was gone.

Troy Deeney doesn’t expect Kompany’s future as Burnley boss to be in dangerCredit: Getty
Burnley haven’t had that feeling yet. Their only win came at Luton in October and it’s been an uphill struggle since.
Beating the Blades could be season-defining. Kompany and those players will feel like their season has been kick-started.
Don’t underestimate how this one result could also determine whether Burnley’s owners spend in January. A few more good results before Christmas and the mood changes. The trust in the current crop of young players returns. Lose, and desperation may creep in.
The one question that will be going around Vinny’s head is: Can this team win at all costs? Win ugly. Burnley have their style of play, but there comes a time when results matter.
They got so used to winning last year that they were never really under pressure.
Turf Moor used to be the stage for so many niggly, gritty sort of games.
That’s changed — they have made improvements to the stadium. The dressing rooms have been revamped.
    Read More on The Sun
When Sean Dyche was there, they used to let the grass grow in the corners of the pitch to try and trap opponents there and so the ball would hold up more.
Vinny has changed that and you have to respect it but the Clarets are definitely not as intimidating as they once were. More

Meanwhile, the club is also conducting an internal investigation after receiving the complaints.
Both investigations are trying to determine whether symptoms experienced were related to what guests consumed at the Theatre of Dreams or whether another illness is to blame.
The Red Devils’ current food hygiene rating is listed on the government’s website with the highest grade available, which is 5.
Old Trafford’s annual Food Standards Agency (FSA) inspection was set to take place on October 23.

And the Manchester giants’ rating has not yet been updated for the calendar year 2023.
United draw substantial revenue from hosting events and providing hospitality at Old Trafford.
And the club has yet to comment on the aforementioned allegations.
This comes as the Premier League giants are bracing for a 25 per cent takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe is expected to spend more than £1.25billion for his purchase and is expected to run football operations.
And Sir Jim is planning to invest £245million into improving the club’s infrastructure.
Issues at Old Trafford have been visible of late, with a leaking roof amongst the notable decay.

The legendary striker joined the Premier League at the age of 20 as he signed for Bolton and a successful two-year stint led to Chelsea.
The now 45-year-old enjoyed six successful years at Stamford Bridge where he won two back-to-back Premier League titles as well as the League Cup in 2005 and amassed 78 goals in 263 appearances.
The Iceland legend moved to Barcelona in 2006 where he registered 19 goals and 10 assists in 114 games and spent three years at the Nou Camp where he also won the Treble in 2009.
The forward then underwent quite a nomadic career that saw him returning to England for Tottenham, Fulham, Stoke and former club Bolton.

The Icelandic hero also played for Monaco, AEK Athens, Cercle Brugge, Club Brugge, Cangzhou Mighty Lions, Molde and Pune City before his retirement in 2016.
Have you figured him out yet? Here’s one last clue: He picked up 26 goals in 88 caps for his country…
And it’s of course Eidur Gudjohnsen, who now sees his three sons following in his footsteps as they all play as strikers.
    Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen
Sveinn Aron Gudjohnsen is Eidur’s oldest as he was born in 1998 when his dad had just moved to the UK.
    Most read in Football
Sveinn’s started out at Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy in 2006 when he moved to Catalonia alongside his father and the rest of the family.
Five years later the forward joined Spanish side Gava until 2015 when he moved back to Iceland for HK where his senior career kicked off.
After a short stint at Icelandic outfits Valur and Breidablik the 25-year-old moved to Italy in 2018 for Spezia, who sent him out on loan to Ravenna as well as Odense.
Sveinn has been plying his trade in Swedish club Elfsborg since 2021 and has amassed two goals in 20 caps for Iceland.

    Andri Gudjohnsen
Andri Gudjohnsen started his youth career at Barcelona as well, but he joined La Masia a year after his dad left the Nou Camp and spent three seasons learning from the best.
The 21-year-old then joined Sveinn in Gava for two years and his impressive performances led him to Espanyol as well as Real Madrid in 2018.
The forward managed to turn some heads in Madrid and was promoted to Real’s B team in 2021 where he amassed four goals in 21 matches.
However, Andri never made it to Los Blancos’ first team and was offloaded in 2022 to Swedish outfit Norrkoping, who sent him out on loan to Danish side Lyngby in August.
The striker never played for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, but has registered five goals in 18 senior appearances for Iceland.

    Daniel Gudjohnsen
The youngest of the bunch, Daniel Gudjohnsen also played for Gava where he started out his youth career in 2011.
Four years later he also went to Barcelona’s La Masia academy until 2019 when he joined Andri at Real Madrid.
However, the 17-year-old only lasted three years in Madrid before moving to Sweden for Malmo.
After a successful year in the Swedish giants’ youth set up, Daniel was called up to the senior squad where he has only played once, making his debut in June.

The forward is too young to play for Iceland but is currently part of the national team’s Under-19 side.
