Pope stayed down after diving to his left to deny a United effort on goal.
The shot was blocked, but the Newcastle keeper was left in agony as he signalled to the officials to stop the match.
Replays showed he had landed badly on his shoulder, with the club’s medical staff attending to the injury.
Eddie Howe was then forced into a substitution with Pope unable to continue.

Martin Dubravka replaced the England international for the closing stages for his first league appearance of the season.

Harry Redknapp: Even Pep Guardiola is going back to the old ways – expect to see more of his ‘back to the future’ tactic

I’VE always said football is a simple game — now it seems even Pep Guardiola agrees that you can’t beat winging it.But don’t think I’m having a pop at a bloke who’s rightfully got a reputation as one of modern football’s trailblazers. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Pep Guardiola does something and often the rest followCredit: Getty
I’m not suggesting all the success he’s had at Manchester City is down to playing it off the cuff. It’s the result of hard graft, preparation and obviously having the best players.
If you’re talking trends, it’s usually a case of what Pep does today, the rest do tomorrow, from goalkeepers who must be as good with their feet as their hands, to playing out from the back.
But sometimes the best ways can be the old ways — and that’s what I mean by Pep winging it at City this season.
Or, to put it another way, the way he has turned back time with Jeremy Doku, the man who, for me, is the most exciting player in the Premier League.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Back in the day every club in the league would play with at least one winger — most had them on both sides.
Blokes whose first thought and main objective was to be positive, to run at their full-back, to take him on and whip in a cross.
Division One, as it was back then, was full of them. Mike Summerbee, Steve Heighway, Eddie Gray, Dave Thomas, Stevie Coppell — the list was endless. And that’s only from the 1970s and ’80s.
Sir Alex Ferguson turned Manchester United into the best team in the country with Ryan Giggs or Lee Sharpe on one side, Andrei Kanchelskis on the other.

When I was at Tottenham I had two of the best, with Gareth Bale flying down the left and Aaron Lennon on the right.
All of them players who excited fans and put the fear of God in full-backs. And who would get the crowd buzzing every time they got the ball.
Lots of managers would no doubt argue they play with wingers now as well. But not in the old sense. Not in the way I view them.
These days, the ball goes wide and the first thought is not to try to beat the defender and get to the byline or fire in a shot.
Most of the time it’s about finding a square ball or — and this frustrates me even more — passing it back the way it’s just come.
Wolves had one in Adama Traore, who was an absolute flyer and would tear at people, although in his case there was rarely an end product.
But in Doku, City have an  old-school winger who is absolute dynamite. A man whose first thought isn’t to play it safe but to turn and take on the full-back, to attack and create.
If I had to choose one man who’s lit up the Premier League this season, it’s Doku. At a time when there is such a stink over VAR, he has been a breath of fresh air.
But sometimes the best ways can be the old ways — and that’s what I mean by Pep winging it at City this season.Harry Redknapp
Not so much a guy who puts bums on seats, as gets backsides out of them — because he makes things happen.
There aren’t many games now when the full-back gets put under any serious, sustained pressure.
Players are more intent on a safe pass and keeping possession than running at their opponent and trying to be positive.
But in Doku, Pep has a player who thinks the opposite. Someone who is killing defenders, in a football sense, every time he gets the ball.
I feel sorry for Pedro Porro, who will be the one in his firing line today when Tottenham are at the Etihad.
Porro’s done alright in his first season in England but he will have his hands full this afternoon.
To be honest, it looks a pretty thankless task all round for Spurs.
They have a better record than most against City and I’m sure Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou will send them out to have a go. Rightly so, too, because if you sit back, there’s only one winner.
It’s tough enough at the best of times and now not only is Harry Kane gone, but they also hardly have any fit first-choice defenders.
    Read More on The Sun
Ange is doing a great job and the recent blip is more down to injuries and suspensions.
But I can’t see them getting anything at City — especially with Doku in this form.

Agents are protected legally and can ask the FA to put a transfer embargo in place.
Forest have been busy in the market but agents were still chasing their cash last week.
Steve Cooper made 14 signings in the summer ahead of Forest’s second season back in the Premier League.
His arrivals included a club record £30million deal to bring Ibrahim Sangare to the City Ground from PSV.

However, Forest have lost four of their last five, including Saturday’s defeat to Everton.
The Toffees claimed a 1-0 win thanks to Dwight McNeil’s second half strike.
Forest now sit six points above the relegation zone in 15th place after 14 matches.
A potential transfer embargo would prevent Cooper from bolstering his squad in January.

Former Newcastle midfielder Jenas appeared as a pundit during TNT Sports’ coverage.
And, speaking ahead of kick-off, he suggested 13-time Premier League champions United could “cause an upset” by beating their hosts.
Reacting to his comments on social media, one fan wrote: “Did Jermaine Jenas say we could cause an ‘upset’?”
Another added: “F*** me. Shows how far we have fallen.”

United have not beaten Newcastle in the Premier League since September 2021 but went into the game one place ABOVE their hosts in the table.
Meanwhile, their last visit to St. James’ Park back in April ended in a 2-0 loss.
Newcastle also dumped the Red Devils out of the Carabao Cup earlier this season.
A win for United would see Erik ten Hag’s side move up to fifth and within a point of the top four.

Crystal Palace line up Blackburn star to replace injured Cheikh Doucoure but may have to settle for loan transfer

LOAN players may be the option to boost Crystal Palace’s squad. The Eagles were after a right-back and striker but now need midfield cover due to Cheick Doucoure’s injury.
Crystal Palace are keen on Blackburn midfielder Adam WhartonCredit: Getty
Top targets like Blackburn’s Adam Wharton are too dear but Palace can take two on loan from Premier League clubs, so they plan to focus efforts in that market.
Rovers youngster Wharton has excelled in the middle of the park under Jon Dahl Tomasson at Ewood Park.
SunSport revealed Palace, Newcastle, Brighton and Everton were all interested in making January swoops for the 19-year-old, who is also a reported target for Tottenham.
Doucoure is expected to miss the rest of the season in a major blow to Roy Hodgson.

The Malian ace, 23, snapped his Achilles in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Luton while seemingly innocuously passing the ball unchallenged.
He screamed in pain and was taken off on a stretcher before being spotted leaving Kenilworth Road on crutches and wearing a protective boot before scans revealed the extent of the damage.
And that leaves a gaping hole in the 12th-placed Eagles’ midfield.
That is despite the arrival of Jefferson Lerma in the summer.

Palace’s two recognised right-backs are Nathaniel Clyne, 32, and Joel Ward, 34.
However, the pair’s contracts both expire in the summer.
An extra striker remains on Hodgson’s New Year wishlist.
Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta have shared the No9 responsibilities so far this term.
Edouard, 25, has five Premier League goals in 12 appearances.
But Mateta is yet to get off the mark from ten games – totalling just shy of 400 minutes.

Corinthians are demanding a fee of £21m for Moscardo.
Chelsea have already seen a £17m offer turned down by the Brazilian club.
And Foot Mercato claim PSG now look set to beat the Blues to the signing with the club preparing to meet Corinthians’ asking price.
Their director of football Luis Campos is ready to fly to South America to get the deal done in January.

Moscardo reportedly prefers a move to PSG rather than Chelsea.
The midfielder believes he is more likely to get playing time in Paris due to the amount of options the Blues have in the centre of the pitch.
Mauricio Pochettino has Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Conor Gallagher, Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu and Carney Chukwuemeka all at his disposal.
Chelsea would also not be able to loan Moscardo out in January as the club have already used up their maximum of seven international loan spots.

Graeme Souness claims Jack Grealish ‘needs to have a look at himself’ as he warns England star ‘won’t get any better’

GRAEME SOUNESS has slammed Jack Grealish and warned the England star is NOT likely to improve. The pundit claims the winger poses little threat and is in danger of losing his place in the Manchester City side to Jeremy Doku full-time.

Souness pinpointed Grealish’s dire goalscoring form and criticised the England international for his lack of ambition going forward.
He also suggested he should be playing his best football given he is approaching his peak age at 28.
Souness wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Grealish has become very predictable. He takes his full-back down the line before checking inside and playing it square. There is no threat, no end-product.
“He has not scored in his last 30 appearances for club and country and has only two assists this season, so there you go. He’s a forward!

“He is, for me, at a crossroads in his City career. Doku is 21 years old and is only going to improve. Jack is 28. He needs to have a close look at himself. He should be in his pomp.
“Between 26 and 30 you have the knowledge, you’re physically and mentally stronger. He will not be getting any better. This should be his time.”
Doku, 21, has hit the ground running since joining City and has three goals and six assists in 15 games.
The Belgian even set a record as the youngest player to produce four assists in a single Premier League game when City thrashed Bournemouth 6-1 last month.

Doku’s arrival has seen Grealish drop to the bench on a number of occasions – having previously been a regular starter as Pep Guardiola’s side won the Treble last year.
He has kept his place in the England squad without persuading Gareth Southgate to make him first choice, and Souness has warned he cannot afford to be sitting on City’s bench ahead of Euro 2024.
The Scott added: “With the Euros coming up, and World Cup beyond that, he cannot afford to be sitting on the bench as a bit-part player.
“Only he can decide if he’s happy to be that. It’s not something I would have tolerated. I wanted to start every game and I did, if I was fit.” More
