My cousin is a Premier League legend… but I’m a world champion in a completely different sport

FOR Jai Opetaia boxing is a family affair – but there is also a sprinkle of Premier League royalty. Undefeated cruiserweight champion Opetaia is a fourth generation fighter on his dad’s side and third on his mum’s.

But amazingly, he is cousins with Everton legend Tim Cahill through marriage.
Opetaia, 28, told SunSport: “We’re not super close, I’m closer with his brothers but we’re related. We have a great bond.”
Cahill – capped 108 times for Australia – made his name at Goodison Park with 68 goals in his 278 appearances.
He was also famed for his trademark celebration of boxing the corner flag – but did Opetaia inspire it?

“Well, you could say that! But, probably not,” he joked.
Opetaia added: “I’ve seen that a couple times. It’s really cool. But I don’t watch too much football at all.”
The Aussie- whose grandad Billy boxed professionally – had little to no time for football or anything else for that matter while growing up in Sydney.
He was raised in the gym and by eight he’d had his first boxing bout.

Opetaia revealed: “It’s all I knew, I grew up in the gym, grew up boxing.
“I was a little kid, swinging off the bags, hanging out in the gym and it was a matter of time till I started punching them and the rest is history.
“I can’t remember doing anything else, I grew up fighting, I grew up boxing. I did kickboxing and just any type of contact sport.
“But boxing was always my calling and something growing up I was always putting boxing first, training first and always had fights coming up.
“I can’t remember ever thinking I wouldn’t make it in boxing.”
Opetaia represented his nation as an amateur, winning medals at junior and youth level.
He made it to the 2012 Olympics in London but was eliminated in the opening round.
Opetaia had his first bout aged eight
Opetaia with his ex-pro boxer grandad Billy
By 2015, Opetaia turned professional but his big break came seven years later.
He dethroned Mairis Briedis for the IBF and Ring Magazine belts and defended it in London against Jordan Thompson in September.
But Opetaia’s career will get a huge boost on December 23 when he features on the mammoth Christmas cracker card in Saudi Arabia.
He defends his titles against Ellis Zorro on the night Anthony Joshua faces Otto Wallin and Deontay Wilder returns against Joseph Parker.
Opetaia beamed: “I’m just excited to be on such a big card that the Saudis are putting on, it’s huge.
“It’s a huge stage for me, a big opportunity for my profile and a big opportunity for my bank account!”

Opetaia has been touted to potentially move up to heavyweight in the future.
And he shares a bill in Saudi with Daniel Dubois, Jarrell Miller and Filip Hrgovic also in action as well as light-heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol.
So the ambitious unbeaten star will also use the Middle Eastern outing as a scouting opportunity.
He said: “I see myself moving up to heavyweight and fighting for world titles up there as well.
“Being at that press conference just looking around, I was honoured to be there but at the same time I was looking at potential opponents.
“Even Dmitry Bivol, respectfully I really respect Bivol as a fighter and the way he carries himself, I would be honoured to share the ring with him and fight him.

“I think he’s got an awesome style and he’s a hard fight, which I love. I think he’s an awesome fighter.
“So him coming up to cruiserweight or me going up to heavyweight, it’s limitless what the future holds.”

I was childhood pals with John Stones, he came round my nan’s for Sunday dinner – now we’re both in the Premier League

JOHN STONES has been looking forward to Luton away for months.A Kenilworth Road trip does not seem like an enticing prospect for a Champions League winner.

But Stones cannot wait for Saturday’s match — because he will face childhood pal Jordan Clark.
Play-off final hero Clark said: “John texted me after we’d won at Wembley saying he could not believe we’d be playing against each other.
“He said, ‘We’ll have a right laugh out on that pitch’ and all that. That’s just the way he is.
“It’s going to be a Premier League game and he’s saying it’ll be a right laugh because that’s him all over.

“He said he can’t wait and I can’t wait either. I just told him to watch out because I’ll try to nutmeg him and take the Mickey.”
And Clark added: “I speak to him a lot and he’s exactly the same now as he was then — absolutely daft.
“He used to come to my grandma’s house almost every weekend for Sunday dinner. I spent loads of time at his house, bouncing up and down on the trampoline in his back garden.
“He used to scare the life out of me — because he’d jump off his shed on to the trampoline and bounce 20 feet up in the air.

“And then he’d do two or three back flips which must have been down to him doing gymnastics at school.
“He was the same when we went to the Metrodome swimming pool  in Barnsley when he’d do two or three somersaults from the diving boards.
“He was always a crackpot but most of all he was a great mate and a lovely lad to everyone.
“And from speaking to him every now and again he still is a top lad and really down to earth.”
The two Tykes’ paths first crossed when they joined Barnsley’s academy aged seven.
They progressed through the Oakwell ranks alongside Grimsby striker Danny Rose and future EFL players Rhys Oates, George Maris and Reuben Noble-Lazarus.
Clark, 30, said: “Somehow I even got him to play for my local side Hoyland Common Falcons when we were kids.
“We all benefited from the fact our coaches Bunny [Mark Burton] and Ronnie Branson changed the whole way the academy played.

“Instead of it being long-ball football we went for the ‘total football’ approach, which helped John no end.
“They encouraged him to play out from the back and the foundations were laid, especially for John.
“We had an unbelievable team at Barnsley and we’d say those were the best days of our lives — but I’m sure we’d both say different now.
“We had such a good laugh all the time. We’d batter each other and go to gruelling Army camps but ended up having a laugh. It was quality.
“Our youth team was full of good lads but you could see John was  destined for great things.”
And it seems Stones might have been able to make a go of it between the sticks, too.
His pal said: “I remember heading to Danny’s house and playing football against his garage when we were 15 or 16. John always put himself up to go in goals.
“He was good in nets but his diving about also showed you’ve got to be daft to be a goalie because he loved being in the firing line.
“But he really kicked on, got more Barnsley first-team game-time than us attackers, grabbed his chance with both hands and was different class almost every week.”
Like all good mates, Clark was also there to help him along the way when things went awry.
He said: “There were a couple of times I saw him cry after a bad game, bless him.
“I remember watching from the bench when we got hammered at Brighton and John had probably the worst game of his life.
“He was right-back and got torn to pieces by Kazenga LuaLua, who played with us at Luton.
“John was lucky to stay on the field. He should have been sent off for two yellow-card offences.
“He got really upset after games but I always reassured him. It helped that he had good coaches around to improve him and good team-mates.

“And his mum and dad were brilliant and they’d always cheer him up.
“John’s enjoyed so much success but I honestly couldn’t have wished it upon a better person.” More

Pep Guardiola says he feels ‘so sorry’ for Man City outcast Kalvin Phillips as he ‘struggles to see him in the team’

Phillips has featured for just 89 minutes of his side’s first 15 Premier League games of this season, despite being injury free.
He has been an unused substitute in City’s last four Prem encounters.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, Phillips has been linked with a move away from the Etihad.
Asked about the possibility of the 28-year-old moving on, boss Guardiola said: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. I feel so sorry for my decision for him. I’ve said that many times.

“He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him and I’m so sorry.
“The only thing I can say about him is I am asking for good personalities and characters and he is a perfect example. And after that I have to give him something and I didn’t do that.
“It’s just because I visualise some things and visualise the team and things – and I struggle to see him.
“I’m not very pleased [with myself] and I am so sorry for him. I will not say that [to him] because it is a business and I have to be a professional.

“But if one guy behaves [poorly], I don’t care. But the way he behaves with the team-mates and everyone, I care. So that’s why hopefully it can turn around.
“And I’ve said many times, if it comes to January and he stays, I’m more than pleased because he trains really good and he’s a lovely guy and character.”
Phillips has been linked with a January switch to Italian giants Juventus.
Regular first-team football during the second half of the season would likely strengthen Phillips’ claim for a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.
In order for Phillips to join Juventus, however, the Italian side hope for City to cover the majority of his £150,000 a week wages.
Bayern Munich have also been linked with the midfielder, who could link up with his Three Lions skipper Harry Kane in Germany.
While Newcastle are another side to possess an interest, having lost Sandro Tonali to a 10-month betting ban.

Mikel Arteta wants clear-the-air talks with Premier League chiefs after touchline ban for crunch Aston Villa clash

MIKEL ARTETA says the fun police are making football soulless and fears managers will have to be fenced in to curb their enthusiasm. The Arsenal boss is banned from the touchline for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa after being booked for celebrating outside his technical area when Declan Rice scored a dramatic 97th-minute winner at Luton in midweek.

That was his third yellow card this term and on Thursday he appeared before an FA disciplinary panel to answer a misconduct charge for criticising officials after last month’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle.
Now Arteta is calling for clear-the-air talks with the authorities before they drive passion out of the game.
He said: “There is a really good discussion to be had about how we want the game to be lived and the behaviour we want from the players, coaches and managers.
“There is a question to be asked about how we evolve the game and what we want for our product.

“It was a really emotional moment at Luton with everybody bouncing around and you lose sense of where you are and what space you have to be in.
“I don’t know how to stop that.
“After, I immediately sat on my seat and stayed there for 30 seconds but in the moment of scoring a goal I think it’s very difficult to demand that.
“I understand there are certain boundaries we have to respect but maybe we need a very strong rope for the technical area or else we all just stay still. And I mean everyone.

“If I was given the opportunity, I would like to celebrate with my players.”
The Spaniard added: “We went to the FA and submitted the evidence, opinions, conclusions and context that we had after the Newcastle game.
“Let’s wait for their decision and once that is made I can make a more clear assessment of it.
“But on Saturday, I cannot be next to my team on the touchline, which is unfortunate.”
Arteta has promised to be on his best behaviour when he is banished to the directors’ box at Villa.
Last season’s fixture was overshadowed by an extraordinary punch-up between the rival video analysts but Arteta said: “We all learn from these things and move on.
“I don’t think I’m going to be jumping up and down in my seat, but never say never.
“We have a very experienced coaching staff and I will tell them all to be on their best behaviour.
“There was a game a couple of years ago when I had Covid and had to watch from home and communicate through the computer. So we have a little experience of this.”

Ahead of Saturday’s game with Bournemouth at Old Trafford, Ten Hag reiterated the ball is in Sancho’s court if the matter is to be resolved.
He explained: “So it is about a culture and every player has to match certain standards and it was about that.
“What will happen there? He knows what he has to do if he wants to return. It is up to him.”
Sancho has been forced to train at the academy section of the club’s training ground, with his food brought separately from the first-team canteen.

However, SunSport can reveal he has missed a number of those training sessions.
Sancho is understood to still be on full pay and the club have not fined him for missing training as he has always had a reason.
The forward has not gone AWOL because he always provided an explanation for why he would not be turning up, sometimes citing illness.
He effectively branded Ten Hag a liar on social media after the Dutchman dropped the £73million signing from his squad for the Gunners defeat.

Having been accused of showing a poor attitude in training, Sancho posted: “I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue, I have conducted myself in training very well this week.
“I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into and I have been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!”
Sancho deleted the post but Ten Hag demanded an apology, which has not been forthcoming.

When his former rivals Spurs fell to a 2-1 defeat to West Ham yesterday, Ozil couldn’t resist making a barb.
Ange Postecoglou’s side lost to the Hammers despite having been a goal up – and in doing so became the first side in Premier League history to take the lead in five consecutive games without winning.
They also lost their third home game on the spin after going 1-0 up, another Premier League first.
When stattos Opta tweeted out these facts, Ozil piped up.

Many football fans were quick to point out Ozil’s beloved Arsenal’s failure to win last year’s Premier League title despite being eight points clear with a game in hand.
One asked: “Remind me the amount of days Arsenal spent in first place last season please?”
While a second tweeted: “How many PL did non bottling Arsenal win with you?”
A third quipped: Lmfaooo like arsenal did not bottle the title in the 90th minute last season the biggest bottlers.”
And another added: “Arsenal are statistically the biggest bottlers in Premier League history btw.”
