Newcastle eye shock transfer for Premier League rival over De Gea and Ramsdale as Nick Pope injury replacement

NEWCASTLE have switched their attention to a major Premier League target amid their search for a new goalkeeper. The Magpies will be without No1 Nick Pope for about four months after he suffered a nasty shoulder injury last week during his team’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United at St James’ Park.

This poses as yet another major injury blow for the Toon’s manager Eddie Howe, who has seen his list of crocked stars grow even longer.
Martin Dubravka came on for the England international and started at Everton on Thursday, meaning the Slovakian shot-stopper could fill in for his team-mate while he is sidelined.
But recent reports suggest Howe will look for extra cover in the January transfer window with the Tyneside giants linked with Arsenal outcast Aaron Ramsdale and United legend David de Gea.
According to the Daily Star, however, Newcastle are now eyeing Crystal Palace keeper Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone is seen as a “cost effective short-term cover” as he may cost less than £8million next month.
That is despite the fact the 30-year-old recently put pen to paper on a new contract with Palace until 2027.
The England international has also been a regular for manager Roy Hodgson since September but that is mainly down to Dean Henderson’s thigh injury.
With Henderson eyeing a return before the end of the year, Johnstone might be interested in joining another Premier League club that could also boost his chances of a Euro 2024 call-up.

The ex-United ace, though, was also withdrawn on Saturday during the Eagles’ 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Selhurst Park due to a calf problem.
That could keep the former West Brom keeper out of action over the Christmas period.
However, Johnstone’s recent injury set-back, combined with Henderson’s imminent return, could convince Palace to cash in on the former in January.
Free agent De Gea still poses as a “serious option” but Newcastle worry about his lack of match fitness as he hasn’t played since May shortly before leaving United.
Ramsdale has also been linked but Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is not keen to sell him even though he has been replaced by Brentford loanne David Raya between the sticks. More

The German outlet say many clubs see Tah as a valuable outlet to solving their injury woe – with Liverpool also keen on the defender.
Each of the clubs have a starting central defender out with a long term injury.
Tah, 27, would be a relatively cheap option for any interested party as he has a release clause of £15.5million.
But, that clause does not kick in until the summer and Leverkusen will be reluctant to sell in the January window.

The club will also be without Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossounou when they travel to the African Cup of Nations in January.
So selling Tah would leave them heavily depleted at the back.

Gary Neville shares brutal 5-word assessment of Man Utd’s Bournemouth horror show as fans say ‘how bad must Chelsea be?’

GARY NEVILLE has delivered a brutal five-word assessment of Manchester United’s performance against Bournemouth yesterday.United slumped to a 3-0 defeat to the Cherries in what could be Erik ten Hag’s costliest result during his tenure as coach.

Neville’s assessment was simple, as he posted on X: “Consistently Inconsistent! An abysmal result..”
The loss at home to Bournemouth comes off the back of an impressive win at home to Chelsea which many thought might have seen them turn a corner.
It saw fans question how bad Chelsea must be if United were able to be overcome so easily by a Cherries team that sit 13th in the Premier League.
But an early Dominic Solanke goal meant the Red Devils were always struggling in the game and second half goals from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi only compounded the pain.

Bournemouth’s victory was United’s eleventh defeat of the season and Ten Hag was taunted by chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” from Cherries fans.
Ten Hag was fuming after the match and said: “You have to be at your best in every game, starting with focus.
“When you start like we did, you get killed. They are good opponents but we have to do better.
“As a squad, we are not good enough to be consistent.

“We know we are able to do it, we showed it in the week. We have to leave this behind but we have to talk about it.
“You need consistency, we can play a very good game against many opponents, we are able to do it but you have to do it every third day.
“Get it right and the demands are of a certain standard. We have to go to higher standards to deliver it every third day.”
Ten Hag, who won November’s manager of the month, took some of the blame for his team’s dismal start, which saw them fall behind inside five minutes.
He said: “We have to always be ready for the game, so I have to take responsibility for that.
“I have to prepare the team so they are ready. I’m very disappointed the way we started and we have to be better.”
United have the chance to rectify the situation in their crucial Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, which is followed by a trip to Anfield next Sunday. More

Luton 1 Man City 2: Jack Grealish grabs winner as champions fight from behind to win but still sit four points off top

WHEN Pep Guardiola suffers injuries to his star-studded squad, it is a case of getting out the world’s smallest violin.Yet despite the millions City have spent on players, there is not a club in the world who would not miss Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne and in-form Jeremy Doku.

And so Guardiola’s struggling team, low on confidence and facing a fifth successive Premier League game without a win, avoided being plunged into a fully-blown crisis after being rescued with goals from Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish.
When Elijah Adebayo headed Luton into the lead in first half stoppage time, this goal did not merely give the home team another huge lift.
It set-up the possibility of becoming one of THE greatest Premier League shocks while a home win would also have had a huge impact on the title race.
Yet Silva levelled in the 62nd minute and Grealish grabbed only his second goal of the season three minutes later.
Yet this was still a far from easy win for City. And fair play to Rob Edwards’ Luton who continue to show they do have a chance – however slim – of remaining in the top-flight, purely because they are so bloody difficult to play against at Kenilworth Road.
While City hope to welcome back de Bruyne soon while Doku has been playing well, to be without Haaland for the first time in the League this season was a huge blow.
Equally, the lack of players saw Guardiola name two goalkeepers on the substitutes bench.
City go to Red Star Belgrade for a dead rubber on Wednesday as they have already won Champions League Group D.

After next Saturday’s home game with Crystal Palace, City will then fly to Saudi Arabia for the FIFA Club World Cup in Jeddah and they will hope to have Haaland back then.
As for Luton, this fixture was the latest proof of how far this completely rejuvenated club has come. On the corresponding weekend a decade ago, Luton won 5-0 away at Alfreton in the National League.
This was City’s first visit to Kenilworth Road since 1998. As ever, Luton’s fans made a right old noise, despite the small capacity of the ground, and they sang to City’s fans: ‘’Conference champions, you’ll never sing that”.
City had plenty of the ball in the first half and while Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski was forced to make saves from Phil Foden and Rodri, the champions were still poor in the final third.
Julian Alvarez filled in for Haaland yet he was not much of a threat. When Grealish opened up the home defence with a clever pass, Alvarez side-footed the ball into the sidenetting.
In first half injury-time, Luton did what they should have been trying earlier – and that was to get some high balls in the box towards Adebayo.
Barkley started the move with some nifty footwork in midfield, Alfie Doughty teed up Andros Townsend whose cross to the far post was perfect for Adebayo to leap above Ruben Dias to score.
City needed to start the second half strongly but they took 15 minutes to really threaten, although Dias should have scored from close-range but he hammered a shot against the bar.
Yet 60 seconds later, Silva equalised with a much more difficult effort, a first time shot into the corner from just inside the area after Rodri’s run had been blocked by Tom Lockyer.
City smelt blood and went for the jugular. Luton appealed for a handball from Alvarez but the ref correctly allowed play to continue as the ball seemed to hit the player’s face.  Alvarez crossed from the right, Teden Mengi got himself in a tangle and failed to clear and Grealish had an easy chance at the far post.
For Grealsh and the rest of his relieved City team, it was all smiles – but it could have been very different.

Damage to overhead lines between Grantham and Peterborough caused major disruption
Train operator LNER announced there was major disruption between London and York with lines to Lincoln and Leeds also affected.
Newcastle fans travelling to the Tottenham match are able to get as far as Grantham in Lincolnshire but would then have to make alternative arrangements.
One possible alternative for fans is to take a bus from Grantham to London with supporters travelling on the 8:30am train receiving advice from LNER.
Another alternative for those yet to set off is to travel from Newcastle to Carlisle or Manchester before boarding a London-bound train.

But the Magpies fans also face a nightmare journey back to the North East as the 7:30pm train from King’s Cross to Newcastle has been cancelled.
That means there will only be one train back to Newcastle for fans to travel on – and that has been delayed due to staff shortages.

LNER issued a statement informing customers that their tickets would be valid on other trainlines, including the TransPennine Express between Manchester, Leeds and York/Newcastle.
Toon’s clash with Spurs in North London kicks off at 4:30pm with Eddie Howe’s side looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat to Everton.

Tottenham are also looking to recover their form after failing to win their last five games despite taking the lead in each one.
A win for Newcastle would move them above Tottenham in the table into fifth place, and potentially just one point off fourth-placed Manchester City. More
