Newcastle’s Saudi owners are in a hurry for world domination – but Eddie Howe is fighting to stop season falling apart

NEWCASTLE’S Saudi owners are in a hurry for world domination – and Eddie Howe has it all to prove that he can be their Sir Alex Ferguson.Co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has claimed Howe can be their Fergie but Toon boss Howe now just has a battle on to stop the nearly-man tag sticking.
For now Eddie Howe is just battling to avoid four straight defeatsCredit: Rex
Newcastle’s season is in danger of falling apart after being dumped out of Europe by AC Milan on Wednesday.
Injuries, fatigue and Sandro Tonali’s 10-month ban all carry weight as excuses but, rightly or wrongly, Howe has it all to do to show his ruthlessly ambitious paymasters that he can take them to the next level.
As harsh as that sounds given what he has achieved on Tyneside, football is ruthless and waits for nobody.
Newcastle have made a habit of riding storms under Howe yet there are potential banana skins everywhere you look on the horizon.

The first one comes from in-form Fulham at home on Saturday – and you can guarantee the Toon Army won’t be clapping their side off like they did after Milan on Wednesday if the Cottagers make it four straight defeats.
Howe knows the pressure is unrelenting, insisting “I don’t want a hangover” from their early exit from the Champions League party.
Yet there are still reasons for positivity with a trip to Chelsea on Tuesday and a golden chance to reach a Carabao Cup semi-final for the second season on the bounce having suffered further heartbreak in the final to Manchester United in February.
Lose that, however, and it could be a much darker January on Tyneside than usual.

On there being doubts over whether the Saudis will show patience if Newcastle’s poor form continues, returning defender Dan Burn said: “I don’t agree if people are saying that.
“If you have a bit of perspective on how far we’ve come in a short space of time, we’ve gone very well.
“Internally we don’t panic, we believe in the gaffer’s philosophy.
“We understand we’re going through a tough period but the season is not over.
“We have fewer games after Christmas now which could help. We’re still in the League Cup and we’d love to go one better and win it this year.
“We’ve bounced back before and we’ll do it again.”
Finishing bottom of the ‘Group of Death’ is no embarrassment – they provided a night for the ages in demolishing PSG at home before a shocking last-minute penalty denied them a famous win in Paris.
But the Geordies, seven points off fourth in the Prem, have to pick themselves up off the canvas to make sure there is no nightmare before Christmas.
And even if they get through the festive fixtures – with Luton and Nottingham Forest also to come – all roads lead to a potentially defining January on and off the pitch.
    TREATMENT ROOM EMPTYING
If Liverpool away and the visit of Manchester City to kick off 2024 isn’t bad enough, how about the small matter of mortal enemies Sunderland in the FA Cup sandwiched in between.
Howe needs to go into the derby under serious pressure like a hole in the head.
Yet there is no doubt he will be the man to spend the cash in January.
Howe revealed recently that Newcastle did not plan to spend in the transfer window up until £55million summer signing Tonali was suspended until next season for betting breaches.
With no more Europe, and the treatment room starting to empty at last – though key men Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon hobbled off against Milan – there is no need for anything drastic as they chase a Champions League spot.
But back-up keeper Martin Dubravka has flopped since replacing the injured Nick Pope, and Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips remains a top target to plug the midfield gap.

Three straight defeats, and five in their last eight, does not leave Howe in any immediate danger.
Yet while the Saudi billions ensure Newcastle’s time in Europe will come again, he needs to bring that feel-good factor back quickly to ensure he’s still at the helm. More

With just two English clubs making Champions League knockouts, can the Premier League still claim to be the best?

THE greatest league in the world? You’re having a laugh. After just two English clubs reached Monday’s draw for the Champions League knockout stage, can the Premier League really claim to be the strongest on the planet?
Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday nightCredit: Reuters
Especially when all four Spanish sides topped their groups in Europe’s elite club competition, with Germany and Italy both boasting three teams through to the last 16.
The failures of Manchester United and Newcastle to progress – and to crash out of Europe altogether after finishing bottom of their groups – has led to England’s lowest representation in the knock-out competition for 11 years.
With Uefa revamping the Champions League next season – and offering two extra places to the nations with the best ‘coefficient’ rankings in a baffling new 36-team ‘Swiss model’ format – Premier League clubs were expecting to receive five entries to the top table next term.
But with both Uniteds flopping, that is now extremely unlikely, as both the Bundesliga and Serie A are ahead of England’s top flight in those rankings.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Erik Ten Hag and Eddie Howe might have hoped that a fifth-place Premier League spot would be enough for Champions League qualification but in all likelihood, they have shot themselves in the foot for next season as well.
Their best hope is that the remaining English teams in Europe thrive, while German and Italian clubs struggle.
That means Manchester United will be quietly urging their bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool to live up to their billing as favourites to win the Champions League and Europa League respectively.
The nature of Uefa’s coefficients mean that England’s remaining European teams – City and Arsenal in the Champions League, Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham in the Europa and Aston Villa in the Conference League – must perform significantly better than their Italian and German counterparts to turn it around from here.

But while the performance of English clubs in Europe isn’t matching our league’s indisputable financial dominance, are standards really dropping?
It is unlikely, especially given that City and West Ham collected two of the three European pots this May.
Newcastle were Champions League rookies, with a lengthy injury list and the toughest of all groups, alongside Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan.
Yet they still came within half an hour of qualifying before Milan’s comeback at St James’ Park scuppered their hopes on Wednesday.
The Red Devils are a shambles – and it is almost unprecedented for an English club to make the top four one season, then nosedive so spectacularly the next.
Danish champions FC Copenhagen qualified in front of them, despite operating on around five per cent of United’s playing budget.
But the great counter-argument to the idea of a Premier League decline, is that the English top flight is so competitive, possessing so much strength in depth, that it saps the physical and mental energy of its top teams like no other.
Howe referenced player ‘fatigue’ before the defeat by Milan and it is difficult to argue with that excuse, as there is no let-up in the Premier League.
Newcastle were also dumped out of Europe this weekCredit: Getty
Mid-table sides in England certainly have greater quality and resources than corresponding clubs in Spain, Germany, Italy or France.
England boss Gareth Southgate – certainly no mindless tub-thumper for the Premier League – has consistently stated his belief that English players operating in Europe’s other major leagues are not being tested consistently to the same level as those on home soil.
Clubs from Spain, Germany and Italy are more likely to rest players for a domestic league fixture in the build-up to a crunch Champions League fixture than any English clubs.
They can also be afforded greater rest periods than Premier League sides, with a Friday night fixture often thrown in before a Champions League game the following midweek.
English arrogance about the almighty status of our league has to be tempered by Man Utd and Newcastle performing so poorly.
    Read more on The Sun
But there’s little wonder that the old ‘Big Six’ were so keen to join a breakaway Super League.
Because, in all likelihood, some English clubs are merely becoming victims of the Premier League’s wider success. More

Under-fire Erik ten Hag confident he won’t face sack before key meeting with Man Utd’s new brass amid Graham Potter talk

ERIK TEN HAG is confident he will be given time to present his vision for the future to Manchester United’s new regime. The Dutch boss expects to get the chance to impress incoming investor Jim Ratcliffe to outline how he plans to overhaul the squad at United in the summer – which is likely to involve another big clear out.

Ten Hag is feeling the heat at Old Trafford after a dismal Champions League campaign which saw them finish bottom of the group.
And things could get worse if his team lose badly again at bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday, where they lost 7-0 last year.
SunSport revealed yesterday that ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter has been contacted by Ratcliffe and is widely admired by his Ineos team.
Their £1.25bn investment into the club is due to be confirmed shortly but even then it could take up to six weeks to be fully rubber-stamped and agreed with the current Glazer ownership.

And SunSport understands Ten Hag’s first meetings would almost certainly be with director of sport Dave Brailsford – rather than Ratcliffe himself.
Any head-to-heads with the main man would come further down the line — if he is still the manager.
Despite his optimism, the 53-year-old will be aware results need to improve if the new men are to give him their trust.
For now, club sources say they remain firmly behind the current boss – despite a worrying first half of the season which has seen them lose half of their 24 games.

The likes of Anthony Martial, who is out of contract in the summer, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek, Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia are among players it is believed Ten Hag would be willing to offload to start the overhaul of the squad.
The lengthy injury list is seen as a big factor behind the poor results – while the ongoing takeover talk has also been a distraction.
Off-field problems involving Mason Greenwood, Antony and Jadon Sancho have not helped either.
Even so, it has been a nightmare week for ten Hag with a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth followed by another loss to Bayern Munich.
That meant they recorded their worst-ever group stage performance in the Champions League and failed to even salvage a Europa League spot.  More

Ex-Arsenal star told old team-mates that ball had gone out ahead of Anthony Gordon’s controversial Newcastle goal

JOE WILLOCK told Arsenal players the ball went out of play in the build-up to Anthony Gordon’s controversial goal. The Newcastle winger scored the winner as his side beat the Gunners at St James’ Park on November 4.

His strike was only awarded after a four-minute VAR check on three possible infringements.
Those included whether Willock had kept the ball in play before crossing it into the box.
Mikel Arteta slammed the match officials after the match, branding the decision to award the goal “a disgrace”.
He was subsequently charged by the FA for his comments, but has now escaped punishment after those charges were dropped.

An investigation into the incident has also revealed Willock told the Arsenal players the ball had gone out.
The Newcastle man had slid to keep it in play before his cross was knocked down by Joelinton for Gordon to score.
It is understood that the Arsenal players then told Arteta that Willock had admitted to failing to keep the ball in play.
This then increased what the Gunners boss described as his “sense of injustice and frustration”.

Arteta had already been angered by the decision not to rule the goal out for offside or a foul by Joelinton after the lengthy VAR check.

After coming through the club’s academy, the midfielder scored 11 goals in 78 first-team appearances for the Gunners. More

I was glad players chewed my ear off when I was the first female EFL ref… now I’m set to make Premier League history

REBECCA WELCH won’t relax until players give her stick when she becomes the Premier League’s first ever female referee. She was delighted when stars of Harrogate and Port Vale “chewed my ear off” as the first woman ref at EFL level in April 2021.

And when she takes charge of Fulham vs Burnley in the Prem on December 23 she just wants to be treated like any other ref.
SunSport exclusively revealed the 40-year-old’s views on her historic League Two date at Harrogate two years ago.
She said: “The players didn’t treat me any differently – they were still chewing my ear off as they went past.
“That was nice because I was a bit afraid of them not being like that.

“You want players to go, ‘You got that one wrong, ref,’ or ‘It’s gone so well in the last 10 minutes’.
“You need that and when I got it I felt normal and that I could just referee the game.”
But it appears the whistler from Tyneside will not appreciate the massively-increased attention she’ll get from TV coverage in the Prem.
After huge media interest at Harrogate she admitted: “I was sick of hearing the camera clicking, but it’s the nature of the beast.

“People say it went really well but, for me, it was just a normal game.”
Speaking in a Q&A in aid of North East mental health charity If U Care Share, Welch added: “In 50 years I’ll be in the history books – it’s really nice but, yeah, it’s a game of football.
“But I understand the bigger picture that it’s not about one game, it’s about inspiring the next generation to come through.”
Welch’s big December date will be quickly followed by another one.
Sam Allison has been confirmed as the first black ref in the top flight for 15 years.
The ex-firefighter, 42, oversees Sheffield United vs Luton on Boxing Day.
And PGMOL boss Howard Webb hailed both appointments.
He said: “Both Rebecca and Sam were part of the development group that was created last year. They went through a selection process to be part of that.
“Credit to them they have delivered good performances in the Championship this season and deserve their opportunities due to their quality and the talent that they have.

“Of course it’s significant in terms of Rebecca being the first female to take the whistle in the Premier League, she was the fourth official a few weeks ago for the first time, and we have lots of talented female officials working in the game.
“We have Kirsty Dowle taking charge of her first Football League game this weekend at Doncaster Rovers, she’s another Fifa-registered official.
“I just hope that other people will see the success of these female officials, young girls and young women, and think that refereeing might be for them.
“Sam being the first black referee in the Premier League since Uriah Rennie back in 2008, again we know he has performed well in the Championship this year at a consistent level and we are confident he will deliver a strong performance.

“The profile of the game will serve as a role model for others in under-represented communities and that is undoubtedly a positive.
“We need greater diversity because undoubtedly there is quality in all communities and previously for whatever reason we have not been able to bring people through from those groups and now it’s happening at last thankfully.” More

Until three years ago, the 42-year-old was the only Black ref in the top four English divisions and the first since Uriah Rennie in 2008.
This comes at a time when out of almost 300 referees in England, the number of non-white officials is still in single figures.
And Allison’s recent appointment sees him becoming only the second Black ref to officiate a Premier League match after Rennie.
BAMRef (the Black, Asian and Mixed Heritage refereeing group) issued the following statement: “We welcome this appointment.

And Anfield boss Jurgen Klopp has now suggested he was “lucky” the Reds failed with bids for Blues’ summer recruits Caicedo and £58m Romeo Lavia.
But Caicedo claims Liverpool never stood a chance of signing him anyway.
The Ecuador anchorman, 22, told Sky Sports: “It was impossible to say not to Chelsea, because they were with me supporting me.
“In the last moment Liverpool called me but it was [too] late because I wanted to play for Chelsea.”

However, the 38-cap star also revealed his record move was not without its problems.

Mauricio Pochettino’s erratic side sit just 12th in the Premier League, with the defensive midfielder in and out of the team.
A knee problem and international duty have hampered Caicedo.
But his form has been way below his Brighton level – persuading Pochettino to hold a special meeting with him to talk through any issues.
Meanwhile, with Liverpool top of the Prem, Klopp felt able to make a cutting jibe this week at Chelsea’s spending woes.
The German said: “The summer we had a few strange things happen in the transfer market but here, between us, I can say, ‘My God, were we lucky, eh?’
“We didn’t know that in that moment and it didn’t feel like it in that moment, but yeah, I’m really happy that it worked out, but you never know before.”
The Reds instead spent £148m in all on Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo.
Klopp added: “We obviously realised that other central defensive midfielders don’t want to join Liverpool.
“You see what happens, and then we found Endo. He’s an exceptional player.” More
