Borussia Dortmund are reportedly willing to include the 24-year-old in a swap deal for Jadon Sancho, who is expected to leave Old Trafford in January.
However, ex-United striker Dwight Yorke has urged his former club against signing him.
Yorke told Instant Casino: “I’ve not seen much of Donyell Malen, but I know he’s scored a few goals in the Bundesliga.
“I haven’t seen enough of him to make a judgement on him, but he seems to be an alright player.

“United can’t waste money signing players who won’t improve the squad. I’m an aspiring coach, and that’s the first thing I take into consideration before I sign anyone.
“If this player doesn’t raise the level of the position he’s playing in, then the team will continue on the same path.
“United need to sign players who will be comfortable with the pressure of the club and who will help them win football matches.
“A good player performs even when the rest of the team isn’t. We’re not seeing that in the current squad. Scott McTominay is the only one who looks as if he has a fire in his belly.

“Good players can influence matches even when the team looks down and out. None of the current players look a threat and they all look fragile.
“It’s hard to see any of these players producing something extraordinary, but every team needs individuals like that.
“Football is always easier when you’re playing well, but you really know about players when they’re not. That’s where to find out how good they really are.
“I could play in this City side with ease, but you find out who can really play when the chips are down. That’s when you find out who wants the ball and who shies away from it – that’s when true characters are revealed.”
Malen left Arsenal to join PSV Eindhoven at the age of 18 in 2017.
He spent three years with the Eredivisie side before joining Borussia Dortmund.
The forward has since scored 24 goals and provided 16 assists in 94 appearances for the Bundesliga giants. More

Toney, 27, will return to action next month after completing his eight-month ban for breaching football betting regulations.
Both Arsenal and Chelsea are understood to be interested in signing him, but Shearer thinks he would be a perfect fit for Newcastle.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the Toon icon said: “I would, If I was in charge of recruitment at Newcastle.
“I think he’s a really good player and I think he’s a really good option.

“Newcastle need to improve in that department, and they need another option in there, so I don’t think there will be any shortage of suitors for Ivan Toney.”
Should Toney join Newcastle, he would become another attacking option for Howe alongside Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.
Isak has previously played on the wing, so he could be moved out to the left to make way for the £100million rated man.
Anthony Gordan would likely complete the attack on the other side.

Alternatively, Howe could opt to play both Toney and Isak up front, but he would have to alter his formation.
Newcastle could also look to sign a new goalkeeper in January, with Nick Pope set to be absent for several months with a shoulder injury.
David De Gea has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent weeks.
The Spaniard has been a free agent since leaving Man Utd in July.
Former Man Utd striker Andy Cole believes joining Newcastle would be a “great move” for De Gea.
The Magpies currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of the top four as they seek Champions League qualification for the second successive year.
However, they crashed out of the competition on Wednesday following a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan.

“They were the two who could completely control the tempo of a game, but Luka was a genius of a footballer.

Winter exclusively told Ladbrokes Fanzone: “I had the ultimate respect for Sir Alex Ferguson as a manager.

“As a football fan, I want a manager of Sir Alex’s capability managing my club, so I fully understood him.
“Very early in my career, I refereed Manchester United away to Ipswich, right at the beginning of the season.
