Premier League season could start a MONTH late to make way for controversial new competition

THE PREMIER LEAGUE may have to start a month later in 2025 due to the rebranded Club World Cup competition.According to Sky News, the new tournament will be spread across 29 days by Fifa in two years, which means it will finish around a month before the new Prem season.

The football world governing body has discussed June 15 to July 13, 2025 for the inaugural edition of a 32-club men’s tournament in the United States.
Under those dates, the Premier League could be starting just four weeks after the Club World Cup Final.
However, the global players’ union FIFPRO has told Fifa that footballers need a mandatory 28-day off-season break.
That means the new competition would pose challenges for the Premier League over what to do regarding teams reaching the Club World Cup Final.

That is because those teams would need to start the new domestic season about 28 days later when pre-season training usually takes place.
But there would be a further headache as two teams will also required to play in the 2025 Community Shield, which takes place a week before the Premier League starts.
Therefore, Prem chiefs may have no other choice but to push the start of the campaign, which usually kicks off in August, a month later due to the players’ welfare.
But there would still be issues due to the 2026 World Cup, which is scheduled to start in June and players will be jetting off to the US, Canada as well as Mexico.

Players will be required to join their respective national teams on May 25, 2026, which is just a few days after the Premier League is scheduled to end in the 2025-2026 season.
The Club World Cup dates will be presented in a meeting of the Fifa Council on Sunday in Saudi Arabia where all the details could be finalised.
The new competition will have 12 representatives from Europe, with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City already added as recent Champions League winners. More

Mbappe’s deal expires in June, but he could decide to trigger a one-year extension.
The Frenchman is yet to make a decision on his future, but AS report that Real Madrid want an answer by January 15.
Los Blancos will have the chance to open talks with Mbappe next month regarding a potential free transfer.
Should the forward green-light a move, Real Madrid intend to act quickly by handing his agent a contract proposal.

Mike Dean hints at football rule change after ‘poor law’ cost Arsenal in crucial Aston Villa clash

MIKE DEAN hinted at a potential rule change after Kai Havertz was denied an equaliser during Arsenal’s defeat at Aston Villa last weekend.Mikel Arteta was left furious once again after the German’s leveller was chalked off for handball.

Mike Dean gave his take on the decision
The ball struck Matty Cash’s arm before ricocheting onto Havertz’s moments before the former Chelsea ace prodded home.
Dean, who retired from refereeing last year after 22 years in the Premier League, admitted that whistler Jarred Gillett made the correct call at Villa Park.
But the 55-year-old bemoaned the law while appearing on Sky Sports.
Speaking earlier today, Dean said: “It’s 100 per cent the right decision.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
“It’s something I don’t agree with but the way the law is written by Ifab, that if it strikes any part of your hand or arm and you put the ball in the back of the net, then you have to disallow it.
“Credit’s got to be given to the referee for making the on-field decision, he’s made the call on-field.
“Yes it’s hit Matty Cash’s hand but that’s in a normal position so it’s not handball. It’s hit Kai Havertz’s hand and gone in, they’ve disallowed the goal and rightly so.
“If it hits Havertz’s hand and drops down to [Eddie] Nketiah and Nketiah puts the ball in the back of the net then you’re giving a goal.

“That’s why the law is so unfair.”
He then emphasised his point, continuing: “That’s what’s wrong about it because if it drops down to Nketiah, who’s half a yard next to him, and knocks the ball into the back of the net, the goal gets given.
“It’s just a poor law, really poor.”
Asked if he thinks the rule will be changed, he added: “I like to think it would, to give people a bit more clarity what’s going on.
“But then you’re messing around again with, ‘why are we changing every single year?’
“So there’s got to be some kind of clarity with what’s going on.”
Arteta, 41, watched the match from the stands last weekend after receiving three yellow cards.
He stormed off before the end of the match, before fuming that he felt “clear and obvious” errors went against his team.

Chelsea 2 Sheffield United 0: Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson goals give Blues much-needed three points after dismal run

COLE PALMER turned the game and maybe even Chelsea’s season in a sizzling seven-minute spell. The Blues’ were on course to continue after a drab first half in which they managed just one shot on target.

But Palmer scored one and made another for Nicolas Jackson after the break to relieve the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino and his team.
Chelsea recorded back to back home league wins for the first time since October 2022.
Beating a dogged but limited Sheffield United, who arrived at Stamford Bridge bottom of the table, is hardly the stuff of dreams.
But to use Pochettino’s metaphor about housebuilding, perhaps this will turn out to be solid foundation.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
Chelsea were lucky only to hear a few boos as they walked off at half time.
Their only effort on goal had come from captain Conor Gallagher quite early on and visiting goalkeeper Wes Foderingham made only one more important intervention when he rushed out to deny Jackson.
The Chelsea striker also fired wide after a clash between Moises Caicedo and Anel Ahmedhodzic left the Blades captain clutching his face. As he fouled Caicedo he was caught by a flailing arm but no VAR check was announced.
If anything, the visitors had the better openings.

Cameron Archer had an early shot blocked and later saw another deflected away for a corner. Bogle sent one dangerous ball right across the six-yard box and James McAtee’s deflected centre almost fell perfectly.
Chelsea started the second half with more purpose and Auston Trusty made a vital block on Palmer.
And moments later they scored. Raheem Sterling burst forward and his low ball was turned in from six yards by Palmer, with the goal confirmed after a puzzling VAR check for offside.
    Palmer turned provider soon afterwards.
He would probably have been on penalty duty after Ahmedhodzic hauled back Sterling in the messy build-up. Instead he crossed for Jackson to tap home from close range.
Foderingham made a good smothering stop from Jackson before Chelsea ‘keeper Djordje Petrovic, making his full debut in the absence of the injured Robert Sanchez, made his first save of the afternoon from Gustavo Hamer’s free kick.
Palmer should have had another assist in the 84th minute but substitute Armando Broja somehow contrived to miss an open goal when found three yards out by another fine cross.
Palmer still hadn’t finished, forcing Foderingham into a low save with a free kick. The Blades’ keeper also blocked Jackson’s follow-up but Chelsea had already done enough to stop the rot. More

Luton boss Rob Edwards immediately ran onto the pitch to tell concerned players to make way for the medical team.
Players and staff members from both clubs were clearly in distress as the incident unfolded, with Luton ace Issa Kabore appearing to pray on the side of the pitch.
Both teams were then sent back to the changing rooms as medics attended to Lockyer.
The Luton captain was then carried off on a stretcher to a standing ovation from both sets of fans at the Vitality stadium.

After a lengthy delay, the match was abandoned shorty before 5pm.
Luton have since confirmed that Lockyer suffered cardiac arrest – but he is now stable.
The club said: “Our medical staff have confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch, but was responsive by the time he was taken off on the stretcher.
“He received further treatment inside the stadium, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides. Tom was transferred to hospital, where we can reassure supporters that he is stable and currently undergoing further tests with his family at his bedside.”

The decision to abandon the match rather than restart it was because “players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue.”
An official statement from Luton read: “We don’t know the full extent of what happened and what the next steps are at this stage, but we thank Bournemouth and the medical staff on both sides for their immediate response, which was absolutely amazing.
“We are sorry to all supporters present that players from both sides were in no state of mind to continue with the game after seeing their much-loved team-mate and friend taken off like that, and staff could not carry on with managing the game in such circumstances having had to deal with the situation.

As fans began leaving the stadium, an emotional Edwards walked round the pitch to applaud them.
The football world immediately rallied round to show support for Lockyer, with England legend Gary Lineker tweeting: “Tom Lockyer has been stretchered off. Difficult to be sure if that’s good news but let’s hope so.”
John Terry wrote: “Praying for Tom Lockyer 💙.”
While Ashley Young commented: “Thoughts and Prayers with Tom Lockyer and his family.”
It is currently unclear whether the fixture will be replayed in full or carry on from the moment it was paused.
Prior to the medical emergency, Luton were holding Bournemouth to a 1-1 draw.
Elijah Adebayo stunned fans when he broke the deadlock within the opening three minutes.
But Dominic Solanke netted the equaliser after half time.
Abandoned matches in English football are generally replayed, but the Premier League has yet to announce any decision with the incident still so raw.
Under Rule L.39, the Premier League Board has the power to order a match in which 90 minutes has not been completed to be replayed in full or in part, or allow the result at the time of the abandonment to stand
    PREVIOUS COLLAPSE
Lockyer previously collapsed during Luton’s Championship Play-Off final clash with Coventry in May.
He received medical attention just 12 minutes into the match and was later taken to hospital, where he underwent further tests.
The defender recently opened up about his terrifying ordeal, telling The Central Club podcast: “I’m back-pedalling, and as I’m back-pedalling my head went really light-headed like nothing I’ve ever had before.
“It’s like when you stand up real quick but worse and then my legs went like jelly almost instantly and I remember falling backwards and the next thing I know I woke up and there were paramedics all around me.

Fans convinced ‘Haaland and Mbappe would struggle for Man Utd’ as damning Rasmus Hojlund stat comes to light

MANCHESTER UNITED’S struggling ace Rasmus Hojlund has received the fewest passes out of any Premier League forward this season.Hojlund joined United in the summer following a whopping £72million deal with Atalanta but he has yet to register a single goal in the Prem.

However, a damning stat from The Telegraph, proves that the striker is not the only one carrying blame for his goalless 12-match streak in the English top flight.
The Norway international has lacked serious support from wingers and creative midfielders at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old has received less than 150 passes from his team-mates in all of his 798 minutes in the Premier League this term.
That is a far cry from the 390 passes Tottenham star Son Heung-min has received, which led to 10 goals in 17 appearances.
    Read More on Man Utd
That makes Son the attacker with the most passes in the Prem and Hojlund the forward with the least.
This shocking finding has made fans believe that even Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe would struggle at United.
Haaland has received almost 200 passes to top the Premier League’s scoring charts with a staggering 14 goals in 15 appearances.
But with Marcus Rashford and Antony struggling in United’s wings, Jadon Sancho being axed and Bruno Fernandes failing to add creativity, fans believe even the best couldn’t outperform Hojlund.

It is no surprise the player ahead of the Norwegian in the respective category for passes received is none other than Red Devils team-mate Anthony Martial.
One fan tweeted: “This is all the proof you need that Haaland and Mbappe would struggle playing upfront for United.”
Another commented: “That sums up why he [Hojlund] has no goal in the Premier League.”
A third wrote: “And he doesn’t score goals? Who would have thought…”
This fan said: “But, but ‘he doesn’t have a PL goal yet’.”
And that one stated: “Put Hojlund into a team with good crossers, and he will definitely be a top scorer by now.” More
