It was also revealed he will take charge of the footballing operations at Old Trafford.
But the 25 per cent stake could well lead to a complete takeover in the coming years.
That’s because, according to The Mail, a clause in the deal says that if the Glazers want to sell then they first have to offer their shares to Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe was initially interested in a majority stake, before he settled for 25 per cent – which cost him £1.3billion.

Man Utd fans are keen to end the Glazers reign after 18 years at the helm.
Red Devils supporters have held a number of protests against the family in that time.
And they could finally see the back of them if they choose to sell their remaining shares to Ratcliffe – who is a boyhood Man Utd fan.
Following his 25 per cent takeover, the Brit said: “As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club.

“Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times.

What’s Jim Ratcliffe’s net worth and how much of Manchester United has he bought?

SIR JIM RATCLIFFE is the chemical engineer and industry tycoon who has purchased a 25% stake in Manchester United.Ratcliffe, who is one of the UK’s richest men, is a huge football fan and his deal for United has finally been announced.
Ineos CEO Jim Ratcliffe has bought a stake in Man Utd
Who is Jim Ratcliffe and what is his net worth?
Jim Ratcliffe is a fracking and chemicals entrepreneur who is the chairman and CEO of chemicals group Ineos.
The Brexit-backing businessman came from humble beginnings and was brought up in a council house near Manchester by his joiner dad and office manager mum.
He was born on October 18, 1952, as James Arthur Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe’s first job was with oil giant Esso but he later went on to study for an MBA from London Business School and, in 1989, he joined US private equity group Advent International.
In May 2023 Ratcliffe surged to second in the Sunday Times Rich List with a reported net worth of £29billion.
    When did he start Ineos?
Ratcliffe is the chairman and chief executive of the Ineos chemicals group, which he founded in 1998 from a small base in Hampshire.
Using high-yield debt to fund deals, he started buying unwanted operations from groups such as energy giant BP, picking targets based on their potential to double their earnings over a five year period.
In 2006, Ineos bought BP’s refining and petrochemical arm Innovene, giving Ineos refineries and plants in Scotland, Italy, Germany, France, Belgium and Canada.
Then, in April 2010, Ratcliffe relocated Ineos’ head office to Rolle in Switzerland, cutting the company’s tax bill by £100million per year.
Ineos products are used every day to clean water, make toothpaste, manufacture antibiotics, insulate homes and package food.
The chemicals giant employs more than 18,500 people at 181 sites across 22 countries.
    When was Jim Ratcliffe knighted?
Ratcliffe was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list on June 2, 2018, receiving the honour for services to business and investment.
Other big names on the honours list that year included Kenny Dalglish and Emma Thompson.
What sports teams does Jim Ratcliffe own and does he support Manchester United?
Boyhood Manchester United fan Ratcliffe revealed his interest in buying the Old Trafford club in January 2023 after the Red Devils were put up for sale by the US-based Glazer family.
Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani was thought to have put in a £5billion bid for the team –  short of the Glazers’ £6billion valuation of the club.
In 2022 Sir Jim tried to buy United’s Premier League rivals Chelsea after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the West London club as part of sanctions imposed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
US investor Todd Boehly and his consortium took control of the Blues after Ratcliffe’s bid was rejected.
Ineos already own French football club Nice, as well as Swiss side Lausanne and a third of F1 motor racing team Mercedes.
His Team Ineos cycling team has won seven editions of the annual Tour de France, boasting riders such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas.

    Does he have children?
Ratcliffe has two sons, called George and Samuel, with his first wife Amanda Townson, who he split from in 1995 after a ten-year marriage.
He went on to welcome a daughter, Julia, with his second wife, Italian tax lawyer Maria Alessia Maresca – also known as Alicia Ratcliffe.
Ratcliffe reportedly wed Alicia in the late 1990s, before splitting up a few years later.
In 2020 Ratcliffe moved to tax haven Monaco, leaving behind his properties in Chelsea and Hampshire. More

His minority stake means the Glazer family will remain in control at Old Trafford.
But Ratcliffe is now in charge of “football operations” at the club as he turns his focus towards on-field matters.
However, the wording of the statement revealed the Man Utd board had asked Ratcliffe to assume control of the footballing side, rather than the businessman requesting it.
It read: “As part of the transaction, INEOS has accepted a request by the board to be delegated responsibility for the management of the club’s football operations.”

This led to much reaction on social media as some Man Utd fans took aim at the Glazers.
One said: “Haha. Basically the board and the Glazers know they can’t do it.”
Another added: “That’s just to save face.”
A third replied: “Fluffy words to make it sound like it was their idea, when in reality INEOS will have demanded control.”

While a fourth responded: “Fits with who the Glazers are and what they want from United. As much cash for as little effort and responsibility.”
And a fifth said: “Strange. Not sure on that one.”
Ratcliffe has purchased his 25 per cent stake for a huge £1.3billion.
He has already fired chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough could follow suit.
Ex-Juventus CEO Jean-Claude Blanc, Crystal Palace director Dougie Freedman and Monaco transfer guru Paul Mitchell have emerged as possible replacements.
Meanwhile, cycling mastermind Sir David Brailsford is key to the takeover and he will join Ratcliffe in implementing an overhaul of the club’s transfer department.
Following the announcement, Ratcliffe said: “As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club.

Chelsea fans cheer when flop is subbed off as he endures Christmas Eve to forget against Wolves

Mauricio Pochettino’s misfiring stars wasted another raft of opportunities, with Jackson specifically failing to beat the hosts’ goalkeeper Jose Sa in three different one-on-one situations.
The striker should have scored in the eighth minute when he found himself in front of Sa but took way too long.
The Senegal international then failed to get a touch in the penalty area on 21 minutes that would have set him up against the Wolves goalkeeper again.
The 22-year-old also took ages after 55 minutes when he only had the Portugal international to beat.

Jackson’s frustrating performance came to an end in the 80th minute when he was subbed for Noni Madueke.
And the Senegalese ace’s exodus was greeted by Chelsea fans ironically cheering as they were happy with Pochettino’s decision to take him off.
Fans also took to social media to congratulate the Argentinian tactician’s move.
One supporter tweeted: “Did the Chelsea fans just cheer Jackson getting subbed off there…? That would be deserved. He’s actively hurt the team today.”

Ratcliffe had initially wanted to become the majority owner, but has now settled for a minority stake.
A statement on the club’s website read: “Manchester United plc announced today that it has entered into an agreement under which Chairman of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, will acquire 25 per cent of Manchester United’s Class B shares and up to 25 per cent of Manchester United’s Class A shares and provide an additional $300 million intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford.
“As part of the transaction, INEOS has accepted a request by the Board to be delegated responsibility for the management of the club’s football operations.
“This will include all aspects of the men’s and women’s football operations and Academies, alongside two seats on the Manchester United PLC board and the Manchester United Football Club boards.

“The joint ambition is to create a world-class football operation building on the club’s many existing strengths, including the successful off-pitch performance that it continues to enjoy.”
The Glazers first put the club up for sale a year ago but failed to agree to selling their entire share.
Their demands led to rival Sheikh Jassim pulling out of the race but it did not deter Ratcliffe, who plans to take a hands-on approach to running the club.
He is set to be in charge of football operations and has been desperate to get his feet under the table for some time with Man Utd enduring a difficult season.

And frustrations arose in the final moments of the game as reserve shot-stopper Bettinelli, 31, was cautioned by referee David Coote for dissent.
Chelsea supporters then took to social media to vent their anger at the incident on yet another disappointing day for the West London club.

Chelsea player ratings: Nkunku lives up to expectations but Jackson disappoints again for misfiring Blues against Wolves

CHELSEA suffered another miserable defeat, this time against Wolves who won 2-1 at Molineux. The Blues missed a raft of chances that could have even seen them pick up the three points in the Midlands.
Christopher Nkunku scored his first ever goal for ChelseaCredit: Alamy
The likes of Armando Broja, Raheem Sterling and especially Nicolas Jackson failed to beat Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa in one-on-one situations.
Lesley Ugochukwu saw Mario Lemina netting the opener following some poor marking on 51 minutes and Benoit Badiashile practically set Matt Doherty up for the winner in the third minute of stoppage time with an unbelievable howler.
Christopher Nkunku scored his first ever Chelsea goal with a fine header during stoppage time and almost broke his duck shortly after coming on but was denied by Toti with a clearance on the goalline.
But how exactly did Mauricio Pochettino’s misfiring stars perform? Check out Kostas Lianos’ player ratings below for more:
    Read More on Chelsea
    Dorde Petrovic – 5
Showed great awareness by coming off his line to deny Nelson Semedo in the 39th minute after Levi Colwill lost his man but didn’t do the same in the 45th minute after Hwang Hee-chan broke through.
However, Dorde Petrovic saved Chelsea with a stunning block to deny Toti’s close-range header in the 49th minute. Wasn’t at fault for Mario Lemina’s opener or Matt Doherty’s winner.
    Malo Gusto – 3
Couldn’t deliver at right-back and sometimes lost the ball with weak passes. Malo Gusto struggled in his defensive duties and didn’t cause concern to Wolves’ defenders when moving forward.
    Axel Disasi – 4
Almost led to another goal for Wolves with a reckless touch at the back that gave the ball away to Matheus Cunha in his own third. Barely made up for the rest of the game with his marking.
    Most read in Football
    Thiago Silva – 6
Some good defending from Thiago Silva, especially during Wolves’ counter-attacks. Was vocal at the back and tried to push his team-mates towards an equaliser.
    Levi Colwill – 5
Levi Colwill showed once more why he is not a left-back. The centre-back couldn’t offer solutions or breakthroughs down the wing but was solid when defending.
    Lesley Ugochukwu – 3
Holds responsibility for Mario Lemina’s opener with terrible marking that allowed the Wolves star to easily jump for the header and beat Dorde Petrovic.
Lesley Ugochukwu failed to impress and didn’t give manager Mauricio Pochettino reason to consider him ahead of the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Nicolas Jackson missed three major opportunities to score for ChelseaCredit: Alamy
    Conor Gallagher – 5
Picked up a silly yellow card in the half-hour mark that provided a dangerous set-piece for Wolves outside the box. Conor Gallagher did well moving the ball forward from midfield but often gave the ball away as well.
    Raheem Sterling – 4
Missed an unmissable chance in the 32nd minute in front of Jose Sa after picking up the ball following a shock error from Joao Gomes in his own third but his poor finish was denied.
Raheem Sterling missed a few other good chances throughout the match but made up with an assist as he set Christopher Nkunku’s goal up with a fine cross from the right flank.
    Cole Palmer – 4
Cole Palmer was quite versatile on the pitch starting on the left flank and then undertaking more of a playmaker role. However, the forward couldn’t cause threats and his shots never troubled Jose Sa.
Thiago Silva put together a strong performance in defenceCredit: Getty
    Nicolas Jackson – 2
Should have scored in the eighth minute when he found himself in front of Jose Sa but took too long. Nicolas Jackson then failed to get a touch in the penalty area in the 21st minute that would have set him up against Sa again. The striker also took ages in the 55th minute when he only had the Portugal goalkeeper to beat.
Chelsea fans started cheering when he was replaced by Noni Madueke in the second half.
    Armando Broja – 3
Took way too long to shoot from a goalscoring position in the fifth minute with a needless dribble. Armando Broja was then completely isolated as well as anonymous.
Chelsea endured another poor defeat, this time from WolvesCredit: PA
    SUBS
Christopher Nkunku (on for Lesley Ugochukwu) – 7
Christopher Nkunku scored his first ever Chelsea goal with a fine header in the sixth minute of stoppage time and raised the visitors’ hopes of a late equaliser.
Nkunku almost broke his duck in the 64th minute shortly after coming on but failed to equalise as his shot was cleared off the line by Toti.
The versatile forward brought a new spark up front and Mauricio Pochettino should seriously consider starting him ahead of Nicolas Jackson.
Mykhailo Mudryk (on for Armando Broja) – 6
Just like Christopher Nkunku, Mykhailo Mudryk brought a new energy with some fiery runs down the left but that was about it. Couldn’t break into the area and lift his team-mates up amid a poor afternoon at Molineux.
Ian Maatsen (on for Levi Colwill) – N/A
Came on after 79 minutes as it became obvious Levi Colwill couldn’t cut it at left-back. But Ian Maatsen couldn’t offer much better during his limited time on the pitch.
    Read more on The Sun
Benoit Badiashile (on for Malo Gusto) – 2
Replaced Malo Gusto, who put together a poor performance at right-back, 11 minutes before half-time. And Benoit Badiashine managed to do worse than Gusto by carelessly giving the ball away inside his own box to set up Matt Doherty for Wolves’ second.
Noni Madueke (on for Nicolas Jackson) – N/A
Also came on after 79 minutes but couldn’t offer that attacking spark that was missing while Nicolas Jackson, the man he replaced, was on the pitch. More
