Fans say Gary Neville is ‘back to rattle Arsenal’ after Man Utd legend’s cheeky post following West Ham VAR controversy

GARY NEVILLE rubbed salt into Arsenal fans’ wounds with a cheeky post after their title hopes were dented. The Gunners suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to West Ham last night.

Tomas Soucek opened the scoring for the Hammers – but his goal was not without VAR controversy.
The ball may have gone out of play before Jarrod Bowen squared it to the Czech midfielder.
But officials did not disallow it as they could not find a conclusive angle to show the ball went over the line.
It brought back nightmares of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in November when again refs were unable to prove the ball was off the pitch in the build-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal.

Neville became unpopular with Gunners supporters after winding them up following the Toon defeat.
And he was back at it again last night as he tweeted a picture of him standing by a ball on the line.
It wound up plenty of Arsenal fans as one commented: “You were the worst full-back in the Premier League.”
Neville responded: “Agreed but great at goal line technology.”

Neville did later tweet: “On a positive note for Arsenal the front three are playing narrower and closer to each other to combine. They look dangerous.” More

Little-known rule means Andre Onana would have been banned from playing for Man Utd even if he snubbed Afcon call-up

ANDRE ONANA has agreed to go to the Africa Cup of Nations after fearing he would be accused of letting his country down. The Manchester United goalkeeper was called into Cameroon’s squad for the tournament which runs for just over a month from January 13.

Onana had been torn about going because he could miss six Red Devils games at a time when his indifferent form was leading to questions about his long-term future.
But Fifa rules meant he had to go if the call came or be banned from playing for United for the duration of the tournament. That call came yesterday.
United chiefs have been in negotiations with the Cameroon FA for months in the hope they would opt to NOT call him up.
But following discussions with family and friends, Onana realised he simply could not turn  his back on Cameroon.

Onana retired from international football after being kicked out of their World Cup camp in 2022 following a bust-up with coach Rigobert Song.
He reversed that decision in September and returned for the win over Burundi which saw his side into the Afcon finals.
Onana, 27, is concerned that a prolonged absence from United’s first team could cost him his place long term if No 2 Altay Bayindir performs well.
His spot has already come under question after a number of high-profile blunders in conceding 43 goals in 27 appearances.

On-loan  Sofyan Amrabat will also be missing from the United squad during the tournament having been called up by Morocco.
However, United boss Erik ten Hag has been boosted by a number of players coming back from injury.
Influential Lisandro Martinez is putting a metatarsal problem behind him.
The centre-back said: “My rehab is going amazingly. I am feeling strong.”
Mason Mount is due to return to full training after a calf problem, while Casemiro (hamstring) is also close.

I’m a Man City cult hero – now I manage international team full of fishermen and tuk-tuk drivers

ANDY MORRISON will always be a cult hero for helping drag Manchester City off their knees. But if he thought marshalling City’s defence while they scrapped in mid- table, third-tier wilderness was his biggest football challenge, he was wrong.

He is now manager of the Sri Lankan national teamCredit: Getty
It is the one he faces now, as manager of the world’s 204th-ranked country — a nation that had been banned from playing any football for months of his reign.
Morrison won back-to-back titles with Connah’s Quay and the Welsh manager-of-the-year award when he left in September 2021 to find a new test.
It came with a chance call in May last year, as Fifa looked to bring in Pro Licence coaches to work with lower-rated nations. And they did not come much lower than Sri Lanka.
Morrison, who skippered City to two straight promotions and is now one of their in-house commentators, said: “I’d won pretty much all I could in Wales and stepped away to reinvigorate and energise myself when the call came in.

“I visited Sri Lanka and thought it looked fantastic, so signed up. But it was a really unfortunate time.
“There was a nationwide crisis, no fuel, a lack of electricity and gas, the economy crashed, mass protests against the government — it was anarchy.”
Sri Lanka were suspended by Fifa in January due to government interference in football before getting the green light to carry on in August.
Morrison, 53, added: “When the ban was lifted, we had five weeks to prepare for a World Cup qualifier against Yemen after months without playing. You can’t legislate for any of the things that went on.

“All the players work, it’s not even at semi-professional level.
“We were talking lads who were working in the fishing industry, on the markets or driving tuk-tuks, then leaving their job to play for their country.
“It’s the whole thing — the standard of pitches, the investment, the facilities. It’s not a ‘poor me’, that’s just how it is.
“I’d say in South East Asia we are ten years behind and on the world stage, probably 40. But it is exciting times and things are starting to change.”
Sri Lanka lost that first game to Yemen but drew the return and Morrison is so convinced of brighter days ahead he has signed a deal until 2026.
He said: “I firmly believe we are at the start of something great.
“There is so much work to do but over the next 18 months to two years I think we will see it.
“Success here would give a feeling like no other I’ve ever had in football.”

Brighton 4 Tottenham 2: Postecoglou’s makeshift XI thumped by Seagulls as Kulusevski joins long list of absentees

PERVIS ESTUPINAN has had a long, old wait to get back to the game he loves… but with goals like this, perhaps it was worth it.The Ecuadorian full-back had been out since September with a thigh problem – save for a 12-minute appearance against Ajax in November which ended up setting him back – before last night’s stellar showing against Spurs.

His comeback probably happened even sooner than expected as he came on at half-time for Igor Julio due to a suspected injury.
But the rampaging full-back and fantasy football darling was not about to let the opportunity pass him by, even with Brighton already 2-0 up thanks to Jack Hinshelwood’s blast and a Joao Pedro penalty.
And on 63 minutes, he gave the Amex crowd something to remember as he took aim from 25 yards and guided an explosive missile of a shot into the top corner.
Helpless Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario was left clutching the same thin air into which his boss Ange Postecoglou had seen his side’s last remaining hope for this game evaporate.
When Pedro struck his second spot-kick of the game after Gio Lo Celso’s silly tackle on Evan Ferguson, Postecoglou was staring down his worst defeat as Spurs boss.
Prior to that it had been the 4-1 home implosion against Chelsea, but unlike that day, the Aussie could not blame two red cards for his side’s failings.
In the end his team did beat that scoreline when Ben Davies headed home, after sub Alejo Veliz had grabbed one back late on for his first goal for the club.
But the young Argentine’s personal joy did not mask what was a horror show for his side as a whole – save for a late rally – and one that dented their top-four hopes.

Both teams had nine players injured and while that was very noticeable with slack-looking Spurs, you would never have known it with Brighton given how fresh they seemed.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side completely dominated their opponents for 81 minutes that resembled the Seagulls at their fast-paced, one-touch best during the Italian’s reign.
It was only the rock-solid presence of Vicario that prevented the opener coming quicker than it did.
The Italy international, whose £16million fee from his summer transfer from Empoli is looking more of a snip with each passing game, denied Danny Welbeck twice in quick succession from close range.
Yet there was nothing Hugo Lloris’ successor could do about the thunderous strike that broke the deadlock.
It came from the foot of young Hinshelwood, who had been picked out by Pedro on the right-side of the box and crashed the ball into the roof of the net.
On 20 minutes, Jan Paul van Hecke headed against Pascal Gross’ corner against the post as the pressure grew.
In the aftermath all of Brighton’s attacking players were screaming for a penalty for Dejan Kulusevski’s tug-back on Welbeck as the Albion striker went to volley the loose ball.

Referee Jarred Gillett played on but when eventually there was a pause in play, VAR told him to go to his pitchside monitor to have another look.
Pedro was so confident the spot-kick would be given that he stood on the penalty spot, clutching the ball, waiting for the inevitable decision which promptly came.
The Brazil striker was even cooler as he sent Vicario the wrong way for number two.
While Kulusevski received his fifth yellow of the season for the initial offence, meaning he will be suspended for the New Years’ Eve hosting of Bournemouth.
Even James Milner, who turns 38 next week, was getting in on the attacking action as he curled against the post from distance, leaving a full-stretch Vicario well-beaten.
The fabulous football kept on coming from the hosts who had the ball in the net again thanks to a tasty half-volley from Facundo Buonanotte – but he was offside.
Tottenham’s disastrous half threatened to get worse when Pedro Porro’s sloppy backpass was pounced on by namesake Pedro, though Vicario managed to flick his chip just wide.
Spurs knew they could not get much worse and returned after the break hoping to show a new face, with Kulusevski seemingly showing his intent by ditching the mask protecting his broken nose.
Richarlison had two goals chalked off for offside in a brief revival which was extinguished when the returning Estupinan took centre stage with his howitzer from range.
Three became four when Lo Celso took out fellow sub Ferguson from behind and Pedro did the honours.
Yet Postecoglou is not a man for giving up and there was the faintest, microscopic glimmer of hope when Veliz squirmed the ball home with nine minutes to go.
That turned into a genuine belief when Davies headed home Porro’s cross four minutes later.
The Amex grew nervous as nine minutes of injury time were awarded and Pedro roared the crowd to power his team home in the dying minutes.
Amazingly, there was still time for Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg to fire against a post.
Porro came in for the rebound but was repelled by a block from who else but Estupinan, not to be denied his well-earned day.

Thierry Henry calls for major change to football as Arsenal hit by big VAR controversy in West Ham clash

THIERRY HENRY has called for more cameras to be introduced to football after West Ham scored a controversial goal against Arsenal.Tomas Soucek smashed home from Jarrod Bowen’s pull back, who narrowly kept the ball in according to referee Michael Oliver.

VAR reviewed the incident for three minutes and 22 seconds but could not determine for certain whether the ball had gone out of play.
Bowen’s body blocked the view from the main camera angle, with a camera on the opposite side of the pitch also unable to show a definitive perspective.
VAR had no option but to instruct Oliver to stick with his on-pitch decision, and Henry accepted the officials were helpless.
However he believes there is a solution to the issue – more cameras.

The Gunners legend claims another camera offering a bird’s eye view would have allowed the VAR to check whether the ball had left the pitch.
Henry, speaking on Amazon Prime at half-time of West Ham’s 2-0 win over Arsenal, said: “Well that is the second time for us, Newcastle away. But if you want to help the referees to have the right angle, if you want to know the ball is out you have to be above the ball.
“That is the only way you can know if the ball is out or not.
“We are in 2023 soon 2024 and we still don’t have a camera that is above, it’s too many times where you don’t know if the ball is out or not.

“So can we have a camera that can be above that can see if the ball is out or not, if not it is just impossible to see it.”
Arsenal conceded a similar goal in their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle earlier this season after Joe Willock kept the ball in by the slimmest of margins.
To the naked eye the ball appeared to be out so plenty of Gooners were left fuming by the decision to allow the goal to stand.
Mikel Arteta also complained after the match and Arsenal even wrote an open letter calling on the PGMOL to “address the standard of officiating”. More

Arsenal furious after being hit by same VAR controversy against West Ham that sparked Arteta meltdown in Newcastle clash

ARSENAL have been left fuming after Tomas Soucek scored a controversial goal during West Ham’s 2-0 win.The goal was reviewed by VAR for three minutes and 22 seconds as officials checked if the ball had gone out of play before Jarrod Bowen passed to Soucek to score.

Replays could not determine the ball was out so the goal was allowed to stand
Arsenal suffered a similar fate at Newcastle earlier this season

Replays could not show definitive proof as Bowen’s body blocked the ball from the main camera angle.
The camera from the opposite side of the pitch was also unhelpful and that meant VAR told the referee to stick with his on-pitch decision, which was a goal.
Arsenal suffered a similar fate in their 1-0 defeat at Newcastle earlier this season.
On that occasion Joe Willock was judged to have kept the ball in play by a matter of inches, with Anthony Gordon eventually bundling in his cross.

The incident sparked a meltdown from Mikel Arteta who brandished the officials “embarrassing” for allowing the goal to stand.
Arsenal published a letter after the match calling on the PGMOL to “address the standard of officiating”.
Gunners fans are fuming again with some claiming they have been “robbed” by VAR.
One Gooner said: “VAR hates Arsenal. Clearly out. Happened twice this season.”

Another added: “The ball was out, it was completely past the post, VAR then moved it a frame forward when it was back in play. Scandalous!”
A third wrote: “Same mistake VAR made against Newcastle. Then what is the use of VAR for crying out loud. Ball out of play 😡”
Arteta’s remarks after the Newcastle match were investigated by the FA and the Spaniard could have been hit with a two-match ban.
But he escaped punishment after it was found he used the Spanish word “desgracia”, which means “misfortune”, in his post-match press conference, rather than “disgrace”.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb later admitted the officials got two decisions wrong in the match – but neither related to Toon’s winner.
Arsenal fans complained Joelinton had pushed Gabriel moments after the ball was kept in play, but Webb only suggested referee Stuart Attwell was wrong in his decision not to red card Kai Havertz and Bruno Guimaraes.
At half-time during the West Ham game Gunners legend Thierry Henry called for more cameras to be introduced which would have given a birds-eye view of the incident.
He said: “Well that is the second time for us, Newcastle away.
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg insisted the goal had to stand as officials could not prove the ball went out.
    Read more on The Sun
He said: “There’s no other decision the officials can give.
“The on-field decision is a goal. We cannot be 100 per cent certain that the ball has gone out. As the ball has to be clearly over the line, there’s no conclusive evidence.” More

Roy Hodgson accuses reporter of ‘trying to hurt me’ in live TV interview after Crystal Palace’s defeat to Chelsea

ROY HODGSON accused a reporter of trying to hurt him following Crystal Palace’s defeat to Chelsea.Michael Olise had cancelled out Mykhailo Mudryk’s opener before a late Noni Madueke condemned the Eagles to a third defeat in five games.
Roy Hodgson reacted angrily to a question about relegation
Crystal Palace are on an eight-game winless streak – a run that leaves them just three points above the relegation zone.
Hodgson was asked about his side’s precarious position and he felt the reporter was trying to upset him with her line of questioning.
He said on Amazon Prime Video: “Of course it is a concern. It is always a concern when you are not winning matches and we are not winning matches at the moment.
“But it would be even more of a concern if I thought the team was playing poorly, if I didn’t think the players were working as hard as they are, showing the spirit they are showing, that would be much more of a concern.

“But it’s a statistic, it would hurt me if we were bottom of the table after 38 games, but being near the bottom with 19 games to go, that doesn’t hurt me anywhere near as much as you are perhaps trying to suggest it should.”

Arsenal’s title credentials brought into doubt
Many have asked whether The Gunners can one step further than they did last season.
After spending over £200m in the summer on transfers, this game left more questions than answers.
Arteta’s side showed no penetration and were all possession but could not make it count for anything.
The lack of quality he had to bring off the bench to try and change the game told its own story.

Moyes gets first win at Arsenal
This was David Moyes’ first win away against Arsenal as a manager.
He knew what threat he was facing today and he set his side out perfectly to cope with Mikel Arteta’s side.
Despite dominating possession and having a number of shots at goal, mostly blocked by West Ham players, the visitors full deserved their win at The Emirates this evening.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
Kudus has been a great signing for David Moyes’ side.
He works up and down the flank and is not afraid to defend.
Linking well with Bowen and Paqueta, he is proving to be a real star for The Hammers.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
Arsenal just could not get the better of West Ham tonight.
Once the visitors took the lead, they had the upper hand and never looked like giving it up.
West Ham are now on 33 points, their highest ever return at the halfway stage of a Premier League season.

    FT: Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
The referee brings the game to a close.
Declan Rice gave away a late penalty but Benrahma’s strike was well saved by Raya.
It won’t matter to David Moyes’ side, this is a huge win.

Time is running out for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Bowen picks it up on the halfway line and feeds it to Emerson.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
90+2. You can guarantee Arteta will have a whinge about his side being robbed again by a goal when the ball was clearly out.
The bottom line is that it was anything but clear, which is why VAR could not overrule the onfield decision of a goal.
Arsenal launch a series of crosses into the box but West Ham deal with them well.

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    84. VAR reviewed and incident and agrees it is not penalty.
In those instances, they should be allowed to instruct the referee to show them a yellow card for diving.
It certainly would stop Saka doing it for the rest of this game.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    82. Saka cuts in from the right and runs into the box and goes down looking for a penalty.
The referee decides that it is not a penalty.
It is a blatant dive by ‘the boy who cries wolf’ and he should be booked for that.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

    78. Nketiah is coming deep looking for the ball often.
The problem is with this, he is nowhere near the goal to cause any problems for the visitors.
It looks like Emile Smith-Rowe is about to join the action.
Saka gets a shot away but it is an easy save for Areola.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    72. Nelson is booked for a foul on Soucek.
Benrahma gets down the right and bundles his way into the box.
The ball breaks to him and he looks to get a shot off at goal but it is well blocked.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    70. Jesus wins the ball in the corner and as he touches the ball away, Kudus takes his standing leg away.
It gives the hosts to get a ball into the box to test West Ham.
The centre backs pile forward but Nelson’s delivery is terrible and it goes straight out for a goal kick.
Arsenal’s fans start to boo their own team, stay classy North London.

    68. Gabriel Jesus seems to have his eyes closed when he heads it.
That would answer a lot of questions about his poor finishing.
Two massive chances for the Arsenal attacker wasted in as many minutes.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    66. Brilliant inswinging cross by Bukayo Saka.
He picks out Jesus in the middle of the goal and the Brazilian can only head straight at Areola.
You have to be scoring from there.
Arsenal come forward once again and White lifts one up to the back post.
It finds Jesus again who heads over.
    Terrible.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    64. Odegaard plays the ball to Saka out wide.
He looks to cross but it takes a huge deflection off the defender.

    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    62. The fans are getting frustrated by the lack of urgency in Mikel Arteta’s side.
Saka eats turf once again but no foul.
Fair play, The Gunners’ winger spends more time on the grass than most rabbits.
    Arsenal 0-2 West Ham
    60. The last time West Ham scored two goals at The Emirates was when the last won here in 2016.
