Premier League hope to bring in new technology – but it is unlikely to stop repeat of freak goal Arsenal conceded

THE Premier League hope to bring in new technology next season — but it is unlikely to stop a repeat of Arsenal’s two line-call controversies.Gunners manager Mikel Arteta demanded a better VAR system as his side were hit by another millimetre ruling in the 2-0 home defeat by West Ham on Thursday night.

Tomas Soucek’s opener stood after a delay of three minutes and 22 seconds as there was no technology available to conclusively rule if the ball was out of play when Jarrod Bowen crossed.
Arsenal were also on the wrong end of a similar call at Newcastle last month which left  Arteta labelling VAR “embarrassing” and “a disgrace”, leading to an FA charge that was later dismissed.
The Premier League are looking at introducing robot linesmen next term and are trialling different semi-automated systems which will reduce the time of offside VAR decisions and remove the need for humans to draw lines.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb recently stated the trials will be run for the rest of the season, with plans presented to the 20 clubs in the summer.

The technology uses 12 dedicated tracking cameras mounted underneath the roof of the stadium to track the ball and up to 29 data points of each individual player, 50 times per second, calculating their exact position.
While there is already goal-line technology, it is  more complicated to have a similar system  along the lines of the entire pitch to avoid a repeat of Arsenal’s two incidents.
Even so, the Premier League are not ruling out the possibility and will continue to explore all options to avoid high-profile flashpoints.
Yet like the game at Newcastle, when VAR was unable to rule conclusively whether Chris Willock had not kept the ball in play, the goal involving Bowen was seen as a freak.

This was because the West Ham forward’s body, along with a post of the goal, were blocking clear views of the cameras.
The Fifa system — developed by Munich-based Kinexon — uses a full version which includes a microchip in the ball.
But it was only designed to work only with an Adidas ball, while the Prem has a long-term Nike deal.

Altay Bayindir scouting report: What to expect from stand-in Man Utd keeper after Andre Onana leaves for Afcon

MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to play for Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations next month. That means No2 Altay Bayindir is in line to make his Red Devils debut in the FA Cup third round tie against League One Wigan on Monday, January 8.

Onana was named in the Cameroon squad on Thursday for the AFCON tournament which runs for just over a month from January 13.
As a result, Onana could miss six United matches and, with his indifferent form leading to questions over his long-term future, Turkish stopper Bayindir will have the chance to stake a claim for the Old Trafford No1 shirt.
Bayindir has played once in the UK this season, though, in a 1-1 Euro 2024 qualifying draw with Wales back in November.
Bayindir, who also turned out for his country in a friendly win over Euro 2024 hosts Germany last month, came on for Turkish captain Ugurcan Cakir in the 33rd minute of the Cardiff qualifier after the latter appeared to sustain a foot injury.

The 25-year-old keeper, signed by Erik Ten Hag in a £4.3million deal from Fenerbahce back on deadline day after the departures of David de Gea and Dean Henderson, is yet to make a first-team appearance at Old Trafford.
SunSport ran the rule over Bayindir in his outing against Wales so here’s how he stacked up?
    Shot stopping
Bayindir was called into action two minutes before the interval when he saved low to his right to deny Brennan Johnson’s snapshot.
He showed smart reflexes early in the second half to keep out another low effort from Johnson.

Good handling to save an Ethan Ampadu header. An impressive work-out.
    Distribution
Calm and composed. He started off Turkey’s attacks with the minimum of fuss.
Like Onana, you can see why United boss Ten Hag signed him because of his possession-based style.

    Presence in the box
Bayindir’s first touch after arriving off the bench was to clear a Harry Wilson corner.
He then spent the following minutes stretching to get warm with the ball at the other end of the pitch, drawing cheers from the crowd as he showed his flexibility by doing the splits. More

Fulham vs Arsenal preview: Gunners face Cottagers looking to bounce back from midweek hammer blow – stream, TV, teams

ARSENAL are all set to participate in a second successive Premier League London derby against Fulham. And they’ll be hoping it goes better than the first.
It was a day to forget for former West Ham star Declan RiceCredit: Getty
After seeing Aston Villa slip up at Old Trafford and Liverpool beat Burnley, three points for the Gunners on Thursday would have been enough to take them back to the top.
However, goals from Tomas Soucek and Dinos Mavropanos saw West Ham deliver a huge blow to their title aspirations.
And it also meant that Mikel Arteta’s men are now two points adrift of league leaders Liverpool who host Newcastle on New Year’s Day.
But they’ll be expected to bounce back against Fulham side who have conceded EIGHT goals in their last three Prem matches without scoring any.

Arsenal are desperate to get their hands on a league title after falling brutally short last term.
Man City clawed their way back to eventually win the Treble.
But despite Pep Guardiola’s men looking weaker than in previous seasons, Arsenal are still unable to top the table.
That’s because Liverpool now sit at the summit, leading the Gunners by two points following Thursday’s defeat to West Ham.

    What is their form like?
Fulham recorded back-to-back 5-0 league wins over Nottingham Forest and West Ham earlier this month.
But they have since lost to Newcastle, Burnley and Bournemouth – failing to score in any of those defeats.
And as a result they lie 13th in the Premier League table.
As for Arsenal, they’ve managed just one win in their last four games – with two of those matches ending in defeat.
Three of their last four wins have come by a one-goal margin.
And it means the Gunners have surrendered top spot to Liverpool, with Man City breathing down their neck.
    What is the team news?
Fulham manager Marco Silva looks set to continue without the quartet of Tim Ream (calf), Steven Benda (achilles), Adama Traore (thigh) and Willian (thigh).
While Mikel Arteta also has four key members unavailable to him; Takehiro Tomiyasu (calf), Fabio Vieira (groin), Thomas Partey (muscle) and Jurrien Timber (knee).
However, the Gunners gaffer will be delighted to welcome Kai Havertz back to the fold after his one-match suspension.
    Who are the star men?
Fulham will be looking to Andreas Pereira for inspiration from midfield against Arsenal.
And the Gunners will also want to dominate the park, with Martin Odegaard likely to step up.

    What have the managers said?
Marco Silva: “I would like to see a little bit more consistency in the next months. It is important to build squad depth.
“It is going to happen where we have injuries and the more of the same quality overall that we have I think will be better for us.
“What we can do behind the scenes to improve our squad is of course something I would like to see, I’m open for it and I want it as well.
“My job is to focus on the players we have and if we have 19 or 20 players, my job is to push them, make them go forward and to demand more and more every time.”
Mikel Arteta: “We have to try to generate. If we don’t score goals in thirty shots, we have to do fifty or sixty to try to score, it’s the only thing.
” I cannot imagine a game that you have more dominance, more touches in the box, less situations of the opponents against a really good West Ham side, but it wasn’t enough to win the game.
“What we have is the players that we have, it’s the players that I love the most.
“What we have to do is try to get better situations, and more training, put them there and raise their confidence and that’s it because they have done it.”
    SunSport’s prediction
Arsenal may have lost their grip on top spot after their defeat to West Ham.
But we expect them to bounce back against a Fulham side who are suddenly leaking goals.
Arsenal have plenty of strength in depth even though they are struggling for a clinical edge.
And Mikel Arteta’s men should have enough to edge the game at Craven Cottage.
Final score prediction: Fulham 0 Arsenal 1
    When is Fulham vs Arsenal?

Arsenal’s Premier League London derby against Fulham will take place on Sunday, January 31.
It is scheduled to get underway at 2pm GMT.
Craven Cottage is the allocated arena for this match and it can host approximately 25,700 fans.
Joao Palhinha’s late goal helped Fulham hold Arsenal to a 2-2 draw when the sides last met in August.

What TV channel is it on and can it be live streamed?

Fulham vs Arsenal will be broadcast LIVE on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League in the UK.
Coverage is expected to commence from 1:30pm GMT on both channels – 30 minutes before kick-off.
Fans can also stream the entire action on NOW TV.
Alternatively, follow SunSport’s blog for minute-by-minute coverage of the match.

But as per Fabrizio Romano, the defender will not be without a club for long.
He wrote on X that Villarreal have been pursuing Bailly since last week, and have now pounced after he became a free agent.
Villarreal manager Marcelino is said to be a huge fan of the defender.
It’s a return to the Yellow Submarine for Bailly who enjoyed an excellent one-year stint there from 2015 to 2016.

His form there persuaded Manchester United to part with £30million to sign him in the summer of 2016.
He won the League Cup and Europa League during his first season at Old Trafford but a number of injury problems hindered his progress in recent years.
He was then shipped out on loan to Ligue 1 side Marseille last season after being deemed surplus to requirements by boss Erik ten Hag.
He still had 12 months remaining on his £80,000-a-week deal when he was made available for transfer by United in the summer.

Bailly held talks to link up with former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr but that deal broke down before he headed to Turkey to try to resurrect his career as Besiktas announced his signing on a one-year contract.
Bailly underwent a turbulent period at the Turkish club, with the club exiling him alongside four other players two weeks ago due to “poor performances” and “incompatibility with the team.”
He was joined in this exile by  Vincent Aboubakar, Rachid Ghezzal, Jean Onana and Valentin Rosier.
On the players’ exile, new Besiktas president Hasan Arat told the AFP news agency: “Our No1 priority is to build a better team – we will fill the holes in our squad during the [winter] break.”
It now seems that Bailly’s contract termination is the best fit for all parties, given he already has a club lined up.
His exile from Besiktas caused huge controversy, and his agent Rafaela Pimenta, who also represents Erling Haaland claimed the player’s right had been violated.
She said in a statement: “We are shocked and it took us by surprise.
“We are preparing our reaction since we know Eric has done nothing wrong.
“The player’s rights are being violated and we will make sure to protect him.” More
