David Baddiel reveals tiny amount Three Lions song makes on Spotify despite millions of streams

DAVID Baddiel says he got just 0.003p a time from Spotify for footie anthem Three Lions during the 2018 World Cup.The comedian and writer admitted he did well out of the song when it was first released for the 1996 Euros.
David Baddiel has revealed the amount his song Three Lions has made via Spotify streamsCredit: Getty
But he said he, Frank Skinner and band The Lightning Seeds have seen little in the way of royalties since the rise of Spotify and other online  services.
Asked what the record had brought him apart from greater fame, Baddiel said: “Not money, for a start.
“It brought me, Frank and Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds a fair wedge.
“But not since Spotify took over has it brought us much money. In fact, when England played Colombia in the 2018 World Cup, it was downloaded four million times — for which Frank, Ian and I received £1,200 from Spotify.”

He added that, despite the huge success of the song in the Nineties, he and his wife Morwenna Banks have never flashed their money around.
He told the Comfort Eating podcast: “It (Three Lions) came out in 1996, and it went platinum in 1996 – just to be clear we’ve done OK.”
He added: “Let me tell you something that just happened today. Because I am from sort of lower middle-class immigrant stock, and I’ve done alright in my life, but I find it quite hard, as does my wife Morwenna Banks, who is from rural poverty in Cornwall, to actually flex anything.
“Yesterday, two towels arrived, that have a high thread count that were quite fluffy. And that’s because we sat there the other day, having got out the bath, saying ‘Why are we drying ourselves with these rags – surely we can do better that this?’

Why does Tyson Fury sing American Pie?

WORLD Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury is a man of many talents. As well as being a master of the art of boxing, the Gypsy King has also been known to belt out a song or two.

Why does Tyson Fury sing American Pie?
Tyson Fury likes to sing American Pie because the song’s verses “perfectly articulate Fury’s comeback story”, according to NME.
In October 2016, with an anti-doping case hanging over his head in relation to his use of cocaine and nandrolone, Fury vacated his WBA, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles and admitted he came close to ending his life.
He has since made a remarkable comeback, going on to become a two-time world heavyweight champion by defeating Deontay Wilder for his WBC belt and defending it on three occasions.
Speaking about his fightback in 2018, Fury said: “If I can come back from the brink of defeat, I can do anything.

“I’ve shown what life is like on the other side of having no hope, nothing.
“But I know now it’s about being in a good place and the good is so much better than the bad.
“I’m sat here in a great frame of mind, and that’s worth anything that money can buy.
“At one stage I thought I would end up in a padded room never mind boxing, I didn’t think I was going to survive, I was on the verge of committing suicide.”

When did Tyson Fury first sing American Pie?
Tyson first sang American Pie at a press conference in the build-up to his first fight against Wilder.
Following that match-up with the Brown Bomber in December 2018, which ended in a controversial draw, Fury celebrated his performance by singing McLean’s song again at the post-fight press conference.
The heavyweight world champion has previous experience duetting with a singer too, appearing on Robbie William’s song Bad Sharon in 2019.
In 2019 Fury sang American Pie twice more — at a Nordoff Robbins charity event and during a Q&A style event in Glasgow.
Naturally, the Brit also sang American Pie when he reclaimed the world title by beating Wilder in 2020.
He has gone on to sing it a great many times, including on stage with Towie star Arg in Marbella, at a wild party in Las Vegas, while training on a beach in his hometown of Morecambe, after knocking out WWE start Austin Theory, and also at a glitzy charity event — to name but a few.
Have Tyson Fury and Don McLean collaborated on the song in the past?
Ahead of defending his heavyweight title against Dillian White in April 2022, Tyson joined forces with legendary singer-songwriter Don McLean to record a version of American Pie.
McLean’s famous hit, which has nearly 500million listens on Spotify, had a new spin put on it with Fury joining in on the chorus.
His duet with McLean concided with the 50th anniversary of the song and first aired on BT Sport — it was shown live at Wembley ahead of his successful title defence against Whyte.
What other songs is Tyson Fury known to sing?
Although his crooning may not be at the level of his pugilism, Fury doesn’t limit his repertoire to American Pie.
The other song he is most famous for singing is Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, which Tyson even released as a charity single to raise money for a mental health charity.
The heavyweight champ sang Aerosmith tune I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing to wife Paris beating Tom Schwarz in 2019, belted out Oasis’ Don’t Look Back In Anger with a busker, serenaded promoter Bob Arum with Happy Birthday, sang with Robbie Williams on a festive duet, and performed We Are The Champions with a busker in Latvia.

He even sang an X-rated song to taunt Anthony Joshua in 2021.
But he did spark outrage by singing the N-word while rapping along to Notorious B.I.G’s Juicy at his 32nd birthday party in 2020. More

Gary Neville gets huge pay day as massive global pop star secretly hires out his ENTIRE hotel in Manchester

HE’S a self-appointed man of the people who now spends as much time banging on about socialism and the Labour Party as he does about football. But for such a liberal leftie, Gary Neville doesn’t half keep some swanky company.

The former Manchester United ace has rented out the whole of his five star Stock Exchange Hotel in the city to A-list superstar Madonna while she rehearses for her forthcoming tour — so the Queen of Pop and her entourage can relax in serious style during their down time.
And given that the hotel is a huge gaff, which Gary owns a substantial stake in alongside his old team-mate Ryan Giggs, that sounds like a hefty pay day . . . not bad for someone so keen to hammer anyone for earning a few quid.
This week alone has seen Saint Gary spouting off about the Labour Party conference, ludicrously presenting it as though it were a charity fundraiser in comparison to the previous week’s Tory gathering,
At least he will now be in a good position to make a generous donation to the comrades’ cause.

Anyway, Madge and Co landed in the north of England a couple of days back — with three huge box vans carrying her family behind her own Range Rover, and a huge haul of luggage including three posh Peloton exercise bikes to keep her in shape ahead of the gruelling run of gigs.
And she’ll fit right in at the luxury hotel, which has recently hosted the likes of Shania Twain, Dua Lipa, Pink and Mick Jagger.
Gary really does keep good company.
It’s understood the star has rented a venue nearby to host full-scale rehearsals of her show before it begins properly at London’s O2 Arena this Saturday for a four-night run, ahead of a European leg and then a return to the UK before dates in America.

‘Fragile’ Shakira makes heartbreaking Pique confession in tell-all interview and admits she’s still plagued by ‘demons’

POP icon Shakira said she believed in “till death do us part” in a tell-all interview about her split from football ex Gerard Pique. The Colombian star, 46, said that it was once her “dream” to have a life-long relationship with the father of her two children.

She revealed that since the turbulent breakdown of their relationship, she is still “battling her demons”.
Slamming her ex in talks about her upcoming music, she compared the split to being “thrown in the trash and surrounded by rats”.
And in a heartbreaking revelation, the star also admitted her struggles with being a single mum.
The singer told Billboard that she is in “a reflective period” following the drama of their tumultuous split.

“I’ve gone through several stages: denial, anger, pain, frustration, anger again, pain again. Now I’m in a survival stage,” she explained.
A fragile Shakira said that before she split from her ex, who was rumoured to have cheated, she “believed in till death do us part”.
“My priority was my home, my family. I believed in ’till death do us part.’ I believed that dream, and I had that dream for myself, for my children.”
“It’s what I wanted for myself and my children, but it didn’t happen.”
    Most read in Football
The singer also opened up about her music, describing the “organic” opportunities she’s had since her split to produce new tracks.
Several of her most recent singles have appeared to be swipes aimed at her ex, including The Boss.
The song is named after the alleged nickname given to her by Pique’s friends after she failed to hang out with them or bond with them during the pair’s relationship.
The music video for the track also features the nanny her ex allegedly fired without pay.
Another one of her singles talks about wanting more in a relationship that feels like drinking out of an empty cup.
And her new music video for the single Copa Vacia features Shakira as a siren, where she “returns to the sea because it’s her destiny”.
The star explained: “The siren is a symbol that represents that part of me that was abducted and taken from a world where she belongs to a world where she doesn’t belong.
“A world she had to make enormous sacrifice to be in. A world where perhaps she lacked oxygen.
“But in the end, she returns to the sea because it’s her destiny, just like I returned to Miami.
“This siren was first abducted and then, for love, is next to this man, captive and locked up in a way. Sacrificing her own well-being and what is natural for her for love. And then she ends up thrown in the trash and surrounded by rats.”
Opening up about her life before the split, Shakira said that her career struggled during the family’s ten years in Barcelona.
“I was dedicated to him. To the family, to him. It was very difficult for me to attend to my professional career while in Barcelona.”
Now in Miami, the star said it is easier for her to travel to Los Angeles or elsewhere in the US, and have collaboraters come to her.
“I had to wait for agendas to coincide or for someone to deign to come. I couldn’t leave my children and just go somewhere to make music outside my house.”
“Right now, I have an idea and I can immediately collaborate with whomever I want to.”
The pop icon said that now she is focusing her energy on quality time with her children, but struggles sometimes with being a single mum.
The pair have two boys together, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.
“Sometimes I think being a single mom and the rhythm of a pop star aren’t compatible. I have to put my kids to bed, go to the recording studio; everything is uphill.”
    “It’s constant juggling.”
The couple split last summer as the Spanish World Cup winner ditched her for Clara Chia Marti, 23.
The famous pair were together for 11 years and announced their split in June, before Shakira moved from Spain to Miami with her children.
The footie star has come under fire after it was reported that he cheated on the singer, and that she rumbled his alleged affair thanks to a jar of strawberry jam.
Rumours swirled that Shakira returned home from a period of travelling to find a jar of her strawberry jam had been eaten.
It’s been claimed that Pique follows a strict diet and would not have tucked into the jam – and neither would her children.

The She Wolf singer is then said to have come to the conclusion that someone else – more specifically another woman – had been in her home, and her fridge.
Almost a year on it seems as though the footballer has plans to wed his new beau Clara Chia and is set to announce their engagement, according to Spanish media.

I live next to a Premier League ground and they want to have boozy, late-night concerts – but we took them on

ONE OF the Premier League’s wealthiest football clubs has suffered a defeat long before the new season starts – dished out by neighbours unhappy about their boozy late-night gig plans.Residents living close to the billionaire-backed team’s stadium launched a protest campaign against the prospect of pop concerts featuring all-day alcohol sales.

The rebellion by neighbouring residents marks the latest recent setback for the BluesCredit: PA
The high-profile gigs would have added to the existing annual sporting calendar of 19 league home games plus cup ties.
But the plan has now been scrapped in a victory for neighbours over the club’s rich US owners.
The venue in question is Stamford Bridge, in well-to-do west London – and the club now licking its wounds is two-time Uefa Champions League winners Chelsea FC.
The ruling has been hailed as a triumph for people power, with campaigners today celebrating how they had “frightened” the footballing power which has a lion on the badge and as its mascot.

Chelsea were bought by a US consortium headed by Todd Boehly last summer, after Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich – bankroller of the Blues since 2003 – was forced to cede control following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The club, who have long been investigating for years how to boost Stamford Bridge’s 41,000-capacity, wanted to boost revenue in the meantime by hosting concerts there.
London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have attracted music superstars such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Guns N’ Roses to perform at their new 62,850-capacity stadium since opening it in 2019.
Yet Chelsea have been forced to abandon their hopes of doing similar.
    Most read in Football
Hundreds of residents living around the ground – which is in Fulham, south-west London – signed petitions urging Hammersmith and Fulham council to refuse permission.
Chelsea had applied for approval for a concert venue in part of their stadium.
Under their proposals, it would have remained throughout the year with an alcohol licence from 10am until 11pm, the Mail On Sunday reported.
Yet after talks with council officers, the club has now decided to withdraw the application – to neighbours’ delight.
Writer Kate Reardon, who has lived close by for eight years, said: “We are thankful Chelsea have chosen to engage and listen to residents’ concerns.”
But she went on: “What really frightened them was the sheer scale of the application.
“It would have given any future owners the possibility of making the residents’ lives a misery.
“Chelsea have been here since 1905 and their ability to influence the health and happiness of the neighbourhood cannot be understated.”
Another happy local, 49-year-old Ramzi Mroueh, said: “We are relieved and very grateful that Chelsea FC listened to our concerns and pulled the application.”
And neighbour Adriana Ennab said: “It shows what is possible when the community works together towards a goal.”
Chelsea’s hopes of emulating London rivals such as Spurs, Arsenal and West Ham United by getting a bigger ground have also been hampered by technicalities.
Stamford Bridge is owned by thousands of fans in shares, giving the the Chelsea Pitch Owners PLC organisation a big say on whether the Blues can move.
The group have to approve the shift from Stamford Bridge if the club were to continue in their current form of “Chelsea”.
The CPO also owns the freehold to the Bridge and would need to be bought out by the club’s owners for control of the stadium.
Abramovich, a former ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin, attempted to buy the land in 2012 but was rebuffed by CPO shareholders.
Blues fans suffered more misery in the Premier League season which concluded last month, with the club finishing 12th in the table – their lowest placing since 14th in 1994.
They went through four managers in 2022-2023 – Thomas Tuchel, ex-Brighton and Hove Albion boss Graham Potter, one-game interim head coach Bruno Saltor then returning club legend Frank Lampard whose 11-match caretaker spell brought just one win.
They have since hired a permanent replacement in former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Spurs are not the only Premier League club in London who are able to put on pop concerts.
Arsenal’s 60,074-capacity Emirates Stadium has hosted the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, the Killers and earlier this month the Arctic Monkeys ahead of their Glastonbury headline spot this weekend.
