Former England manager ‘rejected chance to star in Beckham Netflix documentary’ amid row over World Cup red card

FORMER England manager Glenn Hoddle turned down the chance to feature in David Beckham’s Netflix documentary, according to Fisher Stevens.Hoddle, 65, handed the former Manchester United midfielder his first England cap back in 1996.

However, the two did not always see eye-to-eye.
Prior to the 1998 World Cup in France, Hoddle publicly accused Beckham of not focusing on the tournament.
And he later berated the midfielder after he was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone in the round-of-16.
But despite playing a significant role in the early stages of Beckham’s acclaimed career, Hoddle denied the chance to be involved in the 48-year-old’s Netflix series.

Speaking to talkSPORT, documentary director Stevens explained exactly why he was absent.
He said: “Well why don’t we call him right now and ask him.
“I called him and asked him to be in it many times.
“I mean, I didn’t personally, but we contacted his people. I guess he just wasn’t interested in being in the series.”

In the four-part documentary series, Beckham opened up about his admiration for Hoddle as a child.
However, he also spoke about some of the disagreements he had with his former boss – one of which being his infamous red card at France ’98.
Discussing the incident, the England legend said: “I don’t think I’ve ever talked about it because I don’t think I can.
“I find it hard to talk about it because what I went through was so extreme. The whole country hated me.”
Beckham’s wife, Victoria, criticised Hoddle for failing to protect him at the time.
She said: “Glenn Hoddle didn’t come out and try and protect David. How old was David then? 23?
“Glenn Hoddle was a man… well, I wouldn’t even call him a man. He was an older person. The absolute hate. Public bullying on another level.”
And his mum, Sandra, added: “When I watched Hoddle’s interview, I thought ‘what have you done?’ He made it sound like it was David’s fault.
“We’d been used to a manager in Sir Alex Ferguson who never spoke about his team. They just blamed him after that.”

The 48-year-old, nicknamed Goldenballs in his illustrious playing career, also confesses to staying up after everyone has gone to bed so he can tidy up the house.
The father of four discusses the reality of his obsessive compulsive disorder — including a spotless refrigerator — in the final part of his Netflix series, entitled Beckham.
A throwback clip is shown of a teenage Beckham in an immaculate bedroom. The youngster says: “I hate an untidy room.”
Fast-forward several decades and modern-day Beckham is seen in his equally well-kept surroundings, with all of his clothes meticulously arranged.

He explains: “It’s all quite organised — jackets, jean shirts, shirts and then it goes from jumpers, cardies to T-shirts, underwear socks and then suits.”
Pointing out the rail underneath a window, he admits some of his tendencies have become more extreme.
He says: “Those are my outfits for the rest of the week, I prep my week. It used to just be the night before.”
Oscar-winning Beckham director Fisher Stevens asks him: “Is that a new obsession?”

Becks, who has previously spoken about his OCD, shrugs: “Yeah, I’m quite organised.”
He then visibly recoils after opening his trousers drawer and noticing the hangers are fractionally askew. He declares: “Someone’s been in here.”
The former Manchester United midfielder, who famously stayed behind after training to practice his free-kicks, said previously: “I have got this obsessive compulsive disorder where I have to have everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs.”
In the four-part documentary, he shows off the contents of his fridge, where bottles and jars are all perfectly laid out label-first.
Beckham, married to Victoria and dad to Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper, is also seen frantically scrubbing the oven and wiping down the kitchen counter after cooking a roast dinner for the whole family.

OCD is a mental health condition that can affect anyone at any age.
Sufferers typically develop obsessive thoughts and compulsions — such as touching a lamppost a certain number of times — which can disrupt their daily life.
It can also lead to body dysmorphia, compulsive skin picking and hoarding, according to charity Mind.
The condition can be controlled and treatment usually involves psychological therapy or medication.
It is not known why OCD occurs but it can be triggered by a major life event such as childbirth or bereavement.
People who are naturally tidy are also more likely to develop it.
Beckham is seen in the documentary giving fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria, 49, a telling-off for leaving the salt out.
And he admits going round the house on his own tidying, and even cleaning smoke from candles, before he can head off to bed.
In his kitchen, he says: “I clean [the house] so well, I’m not sure it’s actually appreciated so much by my wife, in all honesty.
“The fact that when everyone’s in bed I then go around, clean the candles, turn the lights on to the right setting, make sure everywhere is tidy. I hate coming down in the morning and there’s cups and plates and, you know, bowls. It’s tiring going around every single candle cleaning it.
“I clip the candle wax, I clean the glass, that’s my pet hate, the smoke around the inside of a candle . . . I know, it’s weird.”

Victoria Beckham breaks silence on ‘nightmare’ of David’s alleged 2003 affair and admits ‘I resented him’

VICTORIA Beckham has opened up for the first time about the pain she felt in the wake of husband David’s alleged affair. The England football hero also revealed how their marriage was placed under enormous pressure after he was accused of a fling while playing in Spain in 2003.

The couple, who always kept up a united front, have now also spoken candidly about battling to save their relationshipCredit: AP:Associated Press
Victoria tells new Netflix documentary Beckham it was the hardest time of her life and she was “the most unhappy I’ve ever been”.
Tonight they were joined at its premiere by their four kids Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. Romeo’s girlfriend Mia Regan and Brooklyn’s wife Nicola Peltz were also at the central London screening, along with a string of celebrities.
The Beckhams have always denied claims of an affair while David was playing for Real Madrid in 2003. But they have now spoken candidly about battling to save their relationship.
An emotional Victoria, 49, told the documentary: “It was the hardest period because it felt like the world was against us. Here’s the thing — we were against each other if I’m being completely honest.

“You know, up until Madrid sometimes it felt like us against everybody else but we were together, we were connected, we had each other.
“But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either.
“And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me. It was a nightmare.
“It was an absolute circus — and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town right? Unless you’re in it.”

Asked if she “resented” her husband, the former Spice Girl replied: “If I’m being totally honest, yes I did. It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life.”
Posh added that she “internalised” the trauma in order to support her husband in his career, adding: “It wasn’t that I felt unheard because I was always mindful of the focus that he needed.”
The woman David was accused of having an affair with is not named during the four-part documentary, which is available to stream from today.
However, newspaper headlines from the time are shown, including one which read: “Sex with Becks.”
News bulletins about the former Manchester United midfielder’s alleged affair are also played.
Becks, 48, wells up as he describes the toll the reports had on his beloved wife, who he married four years previously in 1999.

He recalled: “There was some horrible stories which were difficult to deal with.
“It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage.”
Asked by director Fisher Stevens how the couple “survived”, he said: “Every time that we woke up we felt, you know, there was something else and you know we felt that, we both felt at the time that we were not losing each other but drowning.
“But ultimately it’s our private life. There were some days I thought, ‘How am I going to go to work? How am I going to go on that training pitch and look as if nothing is wrong?’ I felt physically sick every day when I opened my eyes. How am I going to do this?”
David admitted he found it difficult adapting to Spanish life after leaving his boyhood club Manchester United — and cites Victoria staying in London early on in his move as a factor in his loneliness.
The pair also detail the trauma of the paparazzi intrusion, and the possible effect it may have had on first-born son Brooklyn.
In another fascinating insight, fashion designer Posh recalls being in labour with third son Cruz in 2005 — and David not being there as he had a celebrity photoshoot.
A newspaper cutting flashed up with a photo of David flanked by glamorous A-listers Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé.
Victoria said: “I was like, ‘Seriously, I’m about to burst, I’m on bed rest. Are you kidding me?! You’ve got a damn photoshoot with Jennifer Lopez who is gorgeous and not about to have a baby.
“So I had my C-section and I remember lying there, I don’t feel at my most gorgeous, let’s just say, and I remember someone showing me the front page of the newspaper which was a gorgeous picture of David between Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé and the headline was ‘What would Posh say?’
“Let me tell you what Posh would say. Posh was p****d off!”
A host of stars joined the Beckhams for the premiere, including TV host James Corden, sports presenter Alex Scott and US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
In the documentary, David praised his wife for putting up with his career “selfishness”, which included a move to LA Galaxy in 2007.
Victoria said she loved their time in LA while Becks admitted he struggled to cope with the standard of football at the MLS side.
The couple — clearly loved-up as they filmed later scenes of the doc — also describe filming earlier parts of the show as like “therapy”.

Victoria smiled and said: “I let go of a lot of pain. Someone once said to me LA is like rehab for famous people — that’s why we always see people walking around Malibu in Ugg boots and tracksuits!
“I probably didn’t realise until I started this, shall we call it, ‘therapy’, I feel at peace with a lot of what maybe in our first session (of Netflix interviews) was still a lot of pent-up anger, frustration . . . I understand it now.”

David Beckham reveals real reason ‘fuming’ Sir Alex Ferguson kicked boot at him during sensational Netflix doc

EX-MAN United star David Beckham says former boss Sir Alex Ferguson kicked a boot at him after he told him to “f*** off”. And Becks revealed his heartbreak at being let go by the fiery Scot from the club he considered his home.

In another revelation, former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said it was his boot that did the damage — an eye injury Sir Alex claims was “stage managed”.
In new Netflix documentary Beckham — out today — David recalls begging with Sir Alex to let him stay at United instead of leaving for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The boot incident — which prompted The Sun’s famous Fergie Decks Becks front page — occurred following an FA Cup fifth round tie against Arsenal on February 15, 2003.
United lost 2-0 to their main rivals, with hopes of a domestic Double or Treble ended.

Beckham tells the documentary makers: “We walked in the changing room and the boss is fuming. I can see it by his face.
“And when you see the boss’s face like this, you don’t want to be anywhere near him. It is a face that no one can do, trust me.
“[He was f’ing and blinding] and I went back at the boss and said ‘no’ and then I swore. I said the f- word. And then I saw him change, and I was like, ‘S***, I really shouldn’t have said that’. I think I said the f-word too many times.”
Talking to camera, Sir Alex explains: “I kicked the boot at his head. I mean, honestly, it was an absolute freak.”

He then accuses the resulting media fall-out — featuring pictures of David’s reported stitches — as being “stage managed”.
Asked about the photos, he shoots back: “Yeah I’m not going to talk about that. The only thing I will say is that I think that was stage managed. It wasn’t even worth a stitch.”
Elsewhere in the four-part documentary, ex-England captain Beckham reveals his heartache at being released by his boyhood club.
And he claims Sir Alex refused to take his calls. He recalls phoning the Manchester United offices and asking, “Can I speak to the boss?” and being told, “No, he doesn’t want to talk to you.”
Becks explains: “And I said, ‘I need to speak to the boss, I need to know this is really what he wants’ and I pleaded to not go. I couldn’t get in contact with the boss. Did I ever want to leave Man United? No, never.
“It was my home. My relationship with the boss was always special. We had our moments, but I still loved him.”
Sir Alex adds: “I think the relationship was at a stalemate.
“There was not going to be any point in me saying to David, ‘I’m selling you’. The decision was made, it was better he went. He didn’t need to go. He could have stayed if he wanted. I think he knew it was the right time.”
David also recalled clashing with Sir Alex over his rising celebrity status — and his relationship with Victoria, who he married in 1999.

He said: “I knew my career was going to come to an end at some point and I wanted a career after football — that ate away at the manager.
“He just wanted me to be the best footballer that I could be and be married to a local girl that wasn’t a superstar.”

David & Victoria Beckham break silence on his 2003 ‘affair’ that rocked their marriage – and handle it perfectly

THERE’S a scene in the new Beckham documentary showing an old Sun article, featuring a shepherd living in Timbuktu besides the headline: “We find the only man on the planet who hasn’t heard of Becks!”David and Victoria Beckham are, without question, Britain’s biggest celebrity exports. Probably our biggest celebrities, full stop.

Sun columnist Clemmie with Victoria at tonight’s premiere
Over the past 25 years, the couple has single-handedly redefined what it is to be famous.
They have become part of the fabric of British culture. They were the Charles and Diana of Showbiz. Barely an inch of their life together has gone unreported.
200-plus million followers between them – more than three times the UK population! – means we, quite literally, now get to see what they have for breakfast. (Avocado, sometimes pancakes).
If we we thought there was nothing left to know, we were wrong.
    read more on the beckhams
A warts n’ all four-part documentary somehow manages to unearth some revelatory gems.
One of the biggest, which airs tomorrow, is the couple gamely speaking for the first time in the aftermath of David’s alleged affair in Madrid in 2003.
Gamely – because this isn’t even her documentary to promote – Victoria describes the period as “the unhappiest in her life”.
David, close to tears, describes his heartache at, well, breaking his wife’s heart as a result of the immediate media fall-out.
    Most read in Football
They could have skimmed over this reported – but always denied – transgression in an otherwise Richard Curtis-esque love story.
The show is, after all, a Studio 99 one – David’s own production company.
    But they didn’t.
The elephant in the room is confronted. And handled, you will see, pitch-perfectly.
(A highlight is Posh FUMING when David casually informs her he wont be at the birth of youngest son Cruz, because he has a photoshoot with Beyoncé and J-Lo: “Posh was pissed off!”, she quips.)
Less forgiving women, you might think, would file for divorce.
Elsewhere, we get to snoop around the couple’s glorious Cotswolds mansions – we note where Becks has his morning coffee: “I can see Victoria naked up there if I’m lucky!” he quips, like a schoolboy who can’t believe his tuck box, pointing to an upstairs bedroom window.
Becks shows off his meticulous, colour-coordinated wardrobes – “someone’s been in here”, he huffs, upon spotting a clothes hanger two millimetres out of place.
For those who’ve doubted the strength of their love – I defy you to watch this series and not be convinced.
Towards the end, the entire family are shown in a gazebo, enjoying a roast whipped up by keen home chef, David.
Kenny Rogers’ Islands In The Stream belts out from a music player, Posh and Becks (the latter clutching a beer) Victoria dance, swaying semi-in-time.
(After, we see David frantically cleaning the oven and scrubbing kitchen counters).
Later, in a joint interview in the kitchen – David recorded in total almost 50 hours of interviews – they have their arms draped around one another.
They discuss how cathartic the whole recording process has been, describing it as “therapy”.
David gently teases Victoria, goading her that she’s become “more posh” throughout her career.
“I’ve looked back and heard footage of [Victoria] on the phone to me, saying ‘hello babes!’”, he grins.
“And she doesn’t talk much like she does now by the way… she was much more common then than she is now.
“I don’t know what happened…she never had any form of elocution lessons…that’s how you say it, right?!”
Victoria’s chips in, mocking his reputation for being “thick” (something he so evidently is not): “I’m so glad you know what that means….!”
As we see son Cruz rowing on the lake outside, and Romeo kicking footballs on the outdoor pitch, David reflects: “Doing this has given me clarity on many things and one of the things which is the most important thing to me is what we’ve got.”
If the five hours of this documentary are anything to go by, that’s a lot.
So why are we all so collectively obsessed with this couple?
By dint of bloody hard work, they are the ultimate in aspirational in working class heroes.
Never has Goldenballs professed to be the planet’s greatest footballer, and not once has Victoria said she was the world’s best singer. Or, even, the best singer in the Spice Girls.
Instead, through a series of ingenious, genuinely progressive branding decisions, determination and an innate likeability – something absolutely no-one can fake – they have clambered to the top of the fame tree, and resolutely stayed a-perch for over two decades.
Only the cynical can knock them.
