England 2 Belgium 1: Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford fire Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions to Nations League victory

GARETH SOUTHGATE celebrated an unlikely winner over Belgium – when it looked as though England were heading for hammering.
The world’s top-ranked nation looked ready to give the Three Lions a real beating after Romelu Lukaku put the visitors ahead in the Nations League clash with a penalty.

But just when it seemed as though Southgate’s side were to be handed a lesson, they somehow clawed their way back.
Marcus Rashford, having just been awarded an MBE, levelled from the penalty spot and Mason Mount scored the winner in the 64th minute although he needed a big deflection.
But Southgate will not care as his team fought hard and found a way to win. For that, you have to give them real credit.
England started without Harry Kane as he had a muscle issue so Dominic Calvert-Lewin kept his place up front.

And Covidiot Jadon Sancho arrived as a 90th minute sub eight days after going to Tammy Abraham’s surprise party.
Yet there was still no place for fellow party-goer Ben Chilwell who was not even in the stadium.
Initially, Roberto Martinez’s Belgium were impressive.
Yannick Carrasco thought he had put Belgium ahead in the 11th minute but the effort was ruled out for an offside on Thomas Meunier.

There was certainly relief for Kieran Trippier who failed to block the cross and for Dier who was turned easily by Carrasco.
Yet five minutes later, Belgium took the lead from the penalty spot after Eric Dier bundled over Romelu Lukaku with a clumsy challenge.
Lukaku sent Pickford the wrong way from the spot and it was the first goal England had conceded for a year – to the very day – when they lost 2-1 at the Czech Republic.

England were being outplayed and the home team kept losing pssession with Marcus Rashford and Declan Rice among the culprits.
Yet approaching half-time, German referee Tobias Stieler pointed to the spot for England after he spotted Meunier wrapping his arm around Jordan Henderson.
The Liverpool skipper played it cute by making the most of the contact and falling to the floor but it was probably a penalty and Rashford delivered a confident finish.

It was a leveller Southgate’s team hardly deserved and they took the lead in the second half  thanks to Mount although his shot took a heavy deflection off the foot of Toby Alderweireld and it looped over SImon Mignolet.
Immediately after the goal, Southgate made a double substitution with Kane and Kalvin Phillips replacing Dominc Calvert-Lewinand Jordan Henderson.
Carrasco should have equalised but he flicked a shot wide after a stunning pass from Kevin De Bruyne.

Chelsea’s Reece James was handed a second half debut in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold with England once again using a three-man defence plus wing-backs.
Rashford could have made it 3-1 after a brilliant exchange with Rice but the Manchester United striker lifted the ball over the bar.
Even so, England held on to see off the team which beat them twice at the World Cup in Russia.

Watch Sergio Ramos pull off incredible backheel tackle as Spain edge to Nations League win over Switzerland

SERGIO RAMOS pulled off an unbelievably risky backheel tackle in Spain’s 1-0 Nations League win over Switzerland.
The experienced centre-back was defending in a one-on-one scenario against FC Augsburg’s Ruben Vargas on the right hand-side of the penalty area.

As Vargas went to knock the ball past Ramos, the Spaniard used his trailing leg to backheel the ball away from danger.
Ramos’ unbelievable tackle most certainly stopped a shot on David de Gea’s goal, playing a vital role in Spain keeping a clean sheet.
De Gea had a busy start to the evening as he was forced into a smart save by Loris Benito, palming away the left-backs shot at the near post.
The hosts shook off the opening ten minute jitters by getting an early goal.

Switzerland keeper Yann Sommer had an absolute nightmare after his short pass was intercepted by Mikel Merino, who set up Oyarzabal for an easy finish.
Sommer would go on to somewhat make up for his earlier mistake denying Manchester City new boy Ferran Torres, turning away the wingers header.
Goalscorer Oyarzabal would go on to miss a glorious opportunity to put his side two goals ahead.

Just when you think you have Sergio Ramos beaten, he pulls something incredible out of the bag

Sommer palmed the ball into Oyarzabal’s path, but the forward was unable to react quick enough to convert at the back post.

Heroics at both ends of the pitch helped keep Spain top of their Nations League group, winning two and drawing just once against Germany.

Republic of Ireland 0 Wales 0: James McClean sent off as Nations League clash ends in draw at empty Aviva Stadium

JAMES MCCLEAN was given a late red card as Republic of Ireland’s miserable week continued.
The Stoke midfielder was shown a second yellow after flying into a tackle on Ethan Ampadu late in the game – just minutes after being booked.

And it ensured his team followed their heart-breaking Euro 2020 exit by once again failing to break their Nations League duck.
The host nation announced hours before kick-off that five further players had been ruled out of the game due to Covid.
Head coach Stephen Kenny – who was already without Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah for similar reasons – said four of the latest batch would have started.
John Egan, Alan Browne, Callum O’Dowda and Callum Robinson all played in Slovakia on Thursday but were absent here – along with Blackburn’s Derrick Williams.

So in total Kenny had to manage without 12 of the players who he had initially selected for the squad for this international break.
Having gone out of the Euro 2020 on penalties this week, he must have been wondering when his luck would change.
Well it didn’t in the first half here – as defender Kevin Long had to go off with a huge lump on his eye after an accidental arm from Kieffer Moore.
Both sides had difficult nights in midweek – with Wales beaten at Wembley – and that showed in a largely forgettable first half.

Harry Wilson swapped passes with the returning Aaron Ramsey before curling a left-footed shot which was pushed away by Darren Randolph.
The home keeper was lucky to escape as he spilled a routine corner and then wrestled Ethan Ampadu to the floor – but the Greek ref gave him the benefit of the doubt.
At the other end, Wilson’s blind pass presented Robbie Brady with a chance but he took his shot early and curled it just wide.

After the break, Enda Stephens whipped over a cross that was perfect for Shane Long but he planted his header over the bar.
A McClean cross fell nicely for Horgan whose header was blocked before he lifted the rebound over the bar.
But Wales kept them at bay to make it eight unbeaten in competitive games – and five clean sheets in a row.
Ryan Giggs men – who are currently without Gareth Bale – stay top of the group ahead of a trip to Bulgaria on Wednesday.
