Football betting tips: Ronaldo goal in tense Portugal vs France, plus Belgium vs England – Nations League predictions

THE NATIONS LEAGUE takes centre stage this weekend as the Premier League takes a well-deserved rest.
We’ve betting tips to bring you from two huge clashes in Europe, before heading across the Atlantic for a crunch World Cup qualifier involving Argentina.

Portugal vs France – Saturday, 7.45pm (Sky Sports)

A potential game-of-the-weekend clash from Lisbon gets us underway.
The defending Euro champions face the World champions once again after a 0-0 stalemate last month in Paris.
That was a game of two defences, with Portugal showing the kind of toughness which give them a superb chance of retaining their crown next summer.
They currently lead Group 3, holding off the second-placed French on goal difference.

But never underestimate Didier Deschamps men, who left it late to beat Croatia last time out in the Nations League.
And definitely ignore their poor performance against Finland in midweek due to an experimental XI.

When you can bring Kingsley Coman, Paul Pogba and Olivier Giroud off the bench, you’re never going to be far away in any game.
That 0-0 draw in the French capital saw just six shots on target, but you couldn’t split the two sides over 90 minutes.

50/50 possession, 13 attempts each, same blocked shots, even their passing stats were separated by just four (603 to 607, if you’re interested).
Basically, you can’t split these two and we wouldn’t be surprised to see another draw.
Just one of the last five meetings have seen over 2.5 goals and despite Ronaldo chasing his 103rd international goal, we’re not convinced this is going to be a goal fest.

Ronaldo came off the bench to score in the thrashing of AndorraCredit: Reuters
Portugal have conceded just once in their last six matches – and even that was in a 4-1 thrashing over Croatia.
21/10 on a draw is definitely worth backing if the defences remain on top.And for those of you wanting to play even safter, under 2.5 goals at 8/13 is the way to go.
Ronaldo was rested from the start against Andorra in midweek as he recovers from a dose of Covid-19 – and still found time to bag his 102nd international goal from the bench.
He’s evens to net anytime – an excellent price and very easy to back.

Belgium vs England – Sunday 7.45pm (Sky Sports)
Ahh, how we yearn for 2018.
You could go to a game, sit in the pub, see your mates – and England were a bright, fearless attacking young side.
Fast forward two years and Gareth Southgate is under pressure to deliver following a number of limp, uninspired results since football returned from lockdown.
It’s certainly not all doom and gloom though, with the Three Lions already booked in at the Euros next summer.
And the B side looked the part in the win over Ireland in midweek.
You could say that Southgate is simply experimenting with his pack ahead of a major tournament.

But just three goals in four Nations League matches is not the England we’ve come to expect and many are calling for Southgate to let off the shackles.
It was a bizarre game at Wembley when these sides met there last month with the Three Lions somehow coming out with a 2-1 victory.
Belgium have won their other three Nations League games comfortably and sit top of the pile in Group 2.
A victory for the visitors here though would see Southgate’s men head back to the summit.
See, what’s all the fuss about?
England will need to be infinitely better than their 0-1 loss to Denmark, in which they failed to ever get going against well organised opposition.
Belgium will attack here and attack with speed, so don’t expect Southgate to abandon his holding midfielder experiment.

Lukaku scored at Wembley and we reckon he bags again at 6/4Credit: Reuters
Betting wise, the home side are a terrific 11/8 despite being unbeaten on home soil since September 2016.
That makes the 4/11 you can get on Belgium to either win or draw an absolute steal – and definitely one to top up your accumulators.
As much as we’d love a return to the England which tore Spain apart on that glorious October evening two years ago, we’re not holding our breath.
England might have only been on the road twice so far this calendar year, but they’ve mustered just 5 shots on target across games against Demnark and Iceland.
This is a big step up.
Four out of Belgium’s last six matches have seen three or more goals, including that 2-1 reverse in London.
Despite England’s stingy outings on the road, we’re expecting goals in this one at a very backable price.
Over 2.5 goals is 17/20, whilst we’re also a massive fan of Belgium to win EITHER half at a huge 7/10.
Romelu Lukaku has thrived since leaving the Premier League and is fast developing into one of Europe’s best marksmen.
He has 10 in 11 matches so far in 2020/21 – including against England last month – so shouldn’t be 6/4 to score anytime on Sunday. Get on.

    Peru vs Argentina, Wednesday 00.30am
Never mind the Euros, South America has World Cup fever.
Argentina and Peru clash in Lima as Lionel Messi looks to lead his country to the Finals – and perhaps one last shot at the elusive gong.
The home side are in the midst of a shocking run of form and haven’t won a competitive game since July 2019, although they did stun Brazil when 12/1 in a Rio friendly.
Argentina are going into this one in good nick, and in direct parallel to the hosts haven’t lost since July last year.
    Away banker then, surely?
Well, not so fast – Argentina on their travels are not a gimme and haven’t beaten Peru on their last three visits here.
All of those matches have ended in draws, with the most recent a World Cup qualifier in 2016.
The Argentine’s looked to have won it through Gonzalo Higuain with a late strike, but were dominated throughout and Peru deservedly grabbed an equaliser from the spot.

World Cup 2022 could be Messi’s last chance Credit: AFP or licensors
Just as they showcased in Bolivia, Argentina aren’t a slick, attacking force and they had to come from behind after managing just 43 percent possession.
In a nutshell, don’t expect this to be a walkover.
Argentina have conceded on their last four visits to Peru and the home side, despite their poor recent form, managed to score twice against Brazil last time out.
Both teams to score is therefore in play at a generous 8/11, while we’re also tempted by Peru to score more than once again at 11/4.
Messi dreams of lifting the World Cup and it’s about the only thing left he hasn’t won.
The little magician has three in his last two matches, but none for his country this term.
That can all change in Lima – get on a Messi first goal at 3/1.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka reveals how Tottenham rival Harry Kane helped him settle ‘with arm around me’ on England duty

ARSENAL star Bukayo Saka has praised Harry Kane for helping him settle in with England – even though he plays for arch-rivals Tottenham!
Versatile Gunners wing-back Saka won his first Three Lions cap against Wales last month.

And after some more dazzling performances under Mikel Arteta, Saka remains in Gareth Southgate’s plans for games against the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.
Saka’s rise to the top has been extremely impressive and he already looks at home in the England set-up.
But one man taking credit for helping Saka settle in so well is Three Lions captain Kane.

Even though he plays for Arsenal’s fierce rivals Spurs, Saka has heaped praise upon Kane for ‘putting an arm around me’ and guiding him through his first experiences of the England camp.
Saka said: “All the boys have been so good with me from the first minute I came in.
“Harry Kane put his arm around me, he spoke to me and asked me how I was.
“For him to do that, it helped me settle in much quicker and made me feel comfortable to be myself around everyone.

“That helps me not just off the pitch but also on the pitch too, because I feel like I can be myself, express myself and play with the confidence that I play with back at my club.”

However, England have since been rocked by the news that Joe Gomez picked up an injury in training.
The Liverpool centre-back joins club teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold on the sidelines.
And there are even said to be fears that Gomez may have suffered a season-ending ACL injury, just like Reds talisman and defensive partner Virgil van Dijk.

Former Wales boss Chris Coleman opens door to return and says ‘never say never’ after Ryan Giggs arrest

CHRIS COLEMAN has opened the door to a Wales return.
And the Welsh FA could have a decision to make if manager Ryan Giggs’ ‘assault’ case drags on into early next year ahead of Euro 2020.

Chris Coleman has opened the door to a return as Wales managerCredit: MATTHEW CHILDS

Giggs will miss Wales’ trio of internationals this month, starting with Thursday’s friendly against the USA in Swansea after he was arrested on November 1.
The Dragons boss is currently on bail, pending inquiries by police, on suspicion of actual bodily harm and assault after an alleged bust-up with his girlfriend.
Robert Page will act as caretaker manager for those games.
Coleman was not asked directly if he would fancy stepping in as an emergency if Giggs is unavailable.

But the man who led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 admitted he would consider a second spell to manage his country in the future.
Coleman told S4C: “I’ve said before, ‘No, I wouldn’t do it’, ‘I don’t want to do this’ and ‘I’d never do that’.
“I’m 50 now, so with experience you can never say never.”
Cookie’s name, as well as fellow ex-Wales boss Mark Hughes, were mentioned in initial Welsh FA talks last week following Giggs’ shock arrest.

If a short-term appointment needs to be made, the ex-Fulham, Coventry and Real Sociedad chief would tick a lot of boxes.
He has a good relationship with senior star players including Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, he blooded the likes of Ethan Ampadu and David Brooks, his stock remains high with the Welsh supporters and he has tournament experience after guiding Wales to the last four in France four years ago.
Since Coleman left the Wales job in November 2017 after failing to qualify for the World Cup, he has had spells at Sunderland and Chinese Super League outfit Hebei China Fortune.
And, after 18 months away from the dugout, he is relishing the chance to get back into management.
Coleman added: “I don’t know where I’ll be in five years, ten years, well, in ten years I’ll probably be retired as I’ll be 60!
“I’ve got no idea where the next challenge is going to come from. I’ve still got plenty of fire in my belly because I love football.
“I love working with football players. I don’t know where I’m going to end up, I really don’t. I couldn’t say ‘I’m definitely not going to do this; or ‘I’m definitely going to do that’.
“I think what experience has taught me one thing is you never ever know.”

After Wales face USA at the Liberty Stadium, they then take on Ireland on Sunday and Finland next Wednesday in crunch Nations League games in Cardiff.
But then there is a four-month international break until March when preparations for the Euro 2020 finals will ramp up.
At this stage, the Welsh FA and chief executive Jonathan Ford face a waiting game from Greater Manchester Police to see if the case continues and any charges are made.
Giggs denies all the allegations of assault against him and is cooperating with the police.

Republic of Ireland player tests positive for Covid-19 two days before England friendly

A REPUBLIC of Ireland player has tested positive for Covid-19 just two days before the side’s friendly with England.
No other player has been deemed a close contact so the match is not in doubt.

Boss Stephen Kenny has another case within his squad to deal with

The FAI said: “The Football Association of Ireland can confirm that one member of the senior men’s international team has tested positive for Covid-19.
“There are no close contacts of the player and the rest of the staff & squad tested negative ahead of Thursday’s match against England.”
It’s the latest virus headache for Stephen Kenny to deal with after the squad was beset by Covid-19 difficulties during the last international break.
Aaron Connolly and Adam Idah both missed the crunch Euro 2020 play-off qualifier defeat to Slovakia despite neither of them ultimately turning out to have contracted the disease.

They had to be left out of the matchday squad after they were deemed close contacts of a staff member who had tested positive.
However, it was later determined that that had been a false positive.
In addition to this, several other players then missed the Nations League draw with Wales days later.
This was due to Jack Byrne contracting the bug and some other players being deemed close contacts of him.

England vs Iceland could be held in ALBANIA.. a 2,000-mile round-trip for Southgate’s Lions

ENGLAND could end up playing their Nations League clash with Iceland more than a thousand miles from Wembley . . . in Albania!
And that would spark another huge club v country row.

If they make the Balkans trip next Wednesday, Gareth Southgate’s stars face not returning home until the early hours of Thursday — two days before the Premier League restart.
That would be a big blow to Frank Lampard whose Chelsea side travel to Newcastle for the first match following the international break — a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, November 21.
As revealed in the Sun on Sunday, Iceland’s visit to Wembley is in doubt because of the Government’s new Covid-19 travel ban on non-UK citizens arriving from Denmark due to a new coronavirus strain.
Iceland are set to play Denmark in Copenhagen on Sunday — the same day England travel to Belgium — before flying  to London.

The FA are locked in urgent talks with Government officials to force a U-turn and allow the Icelandic team to play at Wembley in eight days’ time.
UK citizens can return from Denmark but must isolate along with all members of their household for 14 days.
But under the new rules, Iceland’s squad will be denied entry into England, meaning the FA are looking at a neutral venue if the Government refuses to back down.
The Albanian FA have offered use of their national stadium in  Tirana — a 2,000-mile round trip for the Three Lions stars.

Reece James and Mason Mount are among Chelsea aces who could return from England duty on the Thursday, two days before a lunchtime clash at NewcastleCredit: PA:Press Association
And the three-hour return flight would mean England’s players missing training at their clubs on the Thursday.
That would hit Chelsea hard as Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are due to play at Newcastle, so they would have little time to prepare.
Cyprus, Greece, Hungary and Poland have previously offered to stage Uefa matches during the coronavirus crisis.
The Cypriots have already committed to hosting a game, while the other three countries all suffered recent spikes in the virus.

Southgate is continuing his preparations for Thursday’s friendly with the Republic of Ireland at Wembley.
Not all of his players will link up with the squad today.
Trent Alexander-Arnold faces four weeks out with a calf injury and there is also a doubt over Marcus Rashford, who has a shoulder problem.

England could face Iceland in GREECE to avoid automatic 3-0 Nations League loss following Denmark travel ban

ENGLAND may have to play in GREECE to avoid forfeiting their Nations League game with Iceland.

But with Denmark having been taken off the UK’s “travel corridor” countries following the spread of Covid-19 to the nation’s mink population, it means Iceland’s players would have to quarantine for 14 days after entering this country.
That raises the prospect of Uefa granting Iceland a 3-0 win for England’s failure to fulfil the fixture.
The FA are engaged in emergency talks with the Government to see if dispensation can be made for Iceland in terms of bio-secure travel.
Forfeiting would end any chance Gareth Southgate’s men have of overhauling Denmark and Belgium to finish top of the group and make next year’s Finals.

England would still be a top seed for next month’s 2022 World Cup qualifying draw, as that will be based on Fifa world rankings, with the Three Lions certain to stay in Europe’s leading 10.
A number of club matches in the qualifying rounds of Uefa competitions were decided by walkovers after Covid outbreaks.
But European chiefs devised a way out of potential issues in August.
Uefa announced that four countries – Cyprus, Greece, Hungary and Poland – had been confirmed as official “neutral venues” for matches that could not be played as intended because of Covid restrictions.

Currently, however, only Greece is on the UK travel corridor list, making it the most likely venue if the game cannot be played at Wembley.
Another option, which has been suggested to Uefa, would be for Sunday’s game in Denmark to be switched to Greece, allowing Iceland to travel to London without any restrictions.
A decision is expected in the next 48 hours.

England’s Nations League clash with Iceland could be moved to neutral venue as coronavirus causes chaos

After The Sun on Sunday exclusively revealed disruption fears over the Government’s new Covid travel ban, the Prem advised clubs to stop their stars reporting for international duty in Denmark to avoid 14-day quarantine periods.
But the situation worsened last night when Italian authorities ruled out Serie A stars joining up with their countries as they would also have to quarantine on their return.
That means Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku would miss Belgium’s forthcoming games, including Sunday’s NL tie with the Three Lions.
Scotland’s Euro 2020 play-off opponents Serbia have also had their plans thrown into chaos with SIX players ruled out.

England boss Gareth Southgate expects to learn this week whether the game with Iceland on Wednesday week can go ahead in light of the latest travel restrictions with Denmark.
The travel ban does not currently cater for elite sport, meaning the Iceland match at Wembley could be off — as the Scandinavians are due to play in Denmark three days earlier and could be blocked from arriving in the UK.
The FA hope the Government will make a U-turn and allow sports stars travelling in a bubble to enter England.
But in case there is no backing down, the FA are looking at potential venues outside the UK which could stage the Iceland clash.

The Danish FA have stated Prem stars including Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel, Andreas Christiensen of Chelsea and Jannik Vestergaard of Southampton will not be involved in Wednesday’s friendly against Sweden.
Coach Kasper Hjulmand has already called up replacements as a result, as UK residents can return from Denmark but must isolate with all members of their household for 14 days.
Foxes keeper Schmeichel remains hopeful of playing for his country this month and criticised the decision as ‘political’.
Schmeichel said: “I mean it is obviously politics, I don’t think it has a lot to do with science.
“The politics of it is the Government has made a decision for now. I hope they come to their senses and see we are very protected and in a bubble.”
Spurs boss Jose Mourinho also has the same problem with Tottenham’s Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Mourinho said: “Pierre is in contact with his national team and wants to play for his national team so, of course, we want him back to play.
“So we have found a solution to protect us and protect the player. The situation is simple. Denmark’s first match is a friendly v Sweden and he does not go.

“The second game is the Nations League in Copenhagen against Iceland and he is suspended. So he is not going. The third game is in Belgium, so he stays with us and goes to Belgium for that game.”
Denmark’s Brondby friendly with Sweden also affects Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof, Newcastle full-back Emile Krafth and Everton goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
A Danish FA statement read: “The DBU’s management has in the last few days been in dialogue with both Uefa, the English FA, English authorities and others.
“As DBU has not received the necessary answers from the English FA, national coach Kasper Hjulmand has been forced to select a number of extra players for the match against Sweden, if the English authorities do not have time to change the rules in the next few days.”
Fifa rules issued at the start of the pandemic made it clear clubs could withdraw their players from international duty if there is a risk of coronavirus infection.
The Danish situation could also affect Liverpool, who are due to play away at Danish side FC Midtjylland on December 9 in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s Serbia counterpart Ljubisa Tumbakovic has seen his side decimated for Thursday’s crunch tie.
Players from SIX Serie A clubs — Inter, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina, Genoa and Sassuolo — are ruled out, including skipper Aleksandar Kolarov and star man Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
