Man Utd winger Daniel James vows to fight for place after hitting top form with Wales

DANIEL JAMES has vowed to fight for his Manchester United place after less than three hours of league action this season.
The winger produced a top display for Wales in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Finland, recording a superb goal and an assist.

Daniel James scored a superb goal against Finland in Wales’ 3-1 Nations League win on Wednesday

James has featured in just three Premier League games for Manchester United this season

But despite falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford and being linked to a move to Leeds, James will not give up on his United dream.
⚽ Read our Man United live blog for the latest news from Old Trafford
The 23-year-old said: “Man United is my club and I love it there — whether I’m playing or not.
“There were times I played a lot last season and I may not have played as much this time.

“But I’m sticking in there and I’ll always be in and around it. I’ll never think differently to that.”
James, who cost an initial £15million from Swansea in June 2019, returns to United for Saturday’s clash with West Brom buzzing after his 25-yard sizzler in Cardiff.
His screaming, air-punching celebration signalled huge relief.
He added: “You could see I was very happy to see it hit the back of the net. It helped I had less time and I instinctively hit the shot.

“I feel really good at the moment. When I do play, I give my all.

“And I’m as proud to play for Wales as I am for Man United.”
James, who also set up Kieffer Moore’s header to seal Wales’ promotion to Europe’s elite, added: “The future is bright for Wales, definitely.
“We all look confident here. It’s a great bunch of lads.
“We all bond so well and you see that on the pitch.”

ENGLAND brought down the curtain on their unsuccessful UEFA Nations League campaign with a glossy 4-0 win over Iceland at Wembley.
Phil Foden scored twice while Declan Rice and Mason Mount nabbed one each on a night where Gareth Southgate’s younger players proved their worth to the Three Lions.
    Score: England 4-0 Iceland
England XI: Pickford, Walker, Trippier, Dier, Maguire, Mount, Rice, Foden, Saka, Grealish, Kane
Iceland XI: Kristinsson, Saevarsson, Ingasson, Arnason, Hermannsson, Sigurjonsson, Bjarnason, Skulason, Palsson, Gudmundsson, Boedvarsson

    GOODNIGHT FROM WEMBLEY
It’s far too late for these youngsters to be up on a school night anyway!
On a memorable evening at Wembley, England’s youthful lions hit Iceland for four to end their Nations League campaign on a high.
Each goal was scored by players 21 years of age or younger, and featured first international strikes for both Declan Rice and Phil Foden.
The Manchester City man, in particular, was magnificent, laying on England’s opener for Rice before bagging two for himself late on.
In between, Mason Mount, who revelled in a forward role, showed composure beyond his years to net while Jack Grealish again proved himself adept on the international stage.
Admittedly, Iceland were poor, understrength and weakened by the 54th minute sending-off of Birkier Saevarsson, but nevertheless, England impressed as they signed off on a challenging year with a comprehensive win.
The victory brings the end of this extended international break, but we’ll be back with more football when the Premier League returns on Saturday.
Until then, thanks for reading and goodbye.

    100 UP FOR SOUTHGATE
England’s fourth goal this evening – thumped in by Phil Foden – was the 100th scored by the national team under Gareth Southgate’s leadership. The first came in October 2016 with Southgate as caretaker boss, and was scored by Daniel Sturridge against Malta.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England’s final goal tonight was the 100th under Gareth Southgate – Harry Kane scored 27 of those goals, whilst 18 (including all 4 tonight) were scored by players aged 21 or under pic.twitter.com/5IPyu2626i

    SOUTHGATE SPEAKS
England manager Gareth Southgate has been talking post-match, and hit back at those who had labelled this game irrelevant.
“For the last three days, the mentality has been outstanding.
“All the players were hearing was this game was meaningless and there was nothing to play for.
“But whenever you play for England, there’s something to play for.
“There were big opportunities for young players especially – but also for some older players.
“We’re trying to build and improve all the time. There was some lovely football, it was good to watch and for the young ones to get the goals was very special for them.”

‘The reality is that a lot of the squad are going to peak in 3-5 years time.’ 📈

“To score my first goals for England, it means a lot to me.
“I just couldn’t stop smiling after it. It’s an unbelievable feeling and I’m going to enjoy it as much as I can tonight.
“I know Jadon [Sancho] well from playing with him in the youth team. When he got the ball, I arrived in the box and he gave me a good assist. Luckily it went in.
“When you score, confidence is high and I took the second goal well.
“It’s something I need to work on, scoring goals from outside the box, so I’m really happy with that one.”

    FODEN FINDS THE NET
Phil Foden sweeps home his first international goal, and then went on to score his second less than four minutes later.

    BIG FUTURE FOR PHIL
Manchester City’s Phil Foden bagged his first international goals to cap an impressive evening, and will now be anticipating more playing time for club and country in the months to come.

    FT: ENGLAND 4-0 ICELAND
England’s youngsters excel at Wembley with two goals in each half. Declan Rice’s header and Mason Mount’s strike are followed up by Phil Foden’s late double; his first goals for his country.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
    THE FINAL WHISTLE IS BLOWN!

    ENGLAND 4-0 ICELAND
    90. As Foden shows off his skills on the touchline, three minutes of added time are signalled.

    ENGLAND 4-0 ICELAND
    89. England are pushing for a fifth, and should have it.
Unmarked at the far post, Saka heads wide.
The Arsenal teenager looked as surprised as anyone to find himself in that position.

    ENGLAND 4-0 ICELAND
    88. On a night where youth has excelled, Iceland throw on the 17-year-old son of former Aston Villa headcase Joey Gudjonsson.
Isak BVergmann Johannesson replaces Birker Bjarnason.

    84. What a couple of minutes for the Man City youngster! What a night!
Harry Maguire wins back possession after Iceland fail to fully clear their lines, and then Harry Winks slips the ball to Phil Foden.
There’s still much for the 20-year-old but he digs out a lovely left-footed shot from outside the box that swerves away from Hannes Thor Halldorsson and into the bottom corner.
    Brilliant!
    ENGLAND 4-0 Iceland

    GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLL!!
    PHIL FODEN BAGS ANOTHER!!

    ENGLAND 3-0 ICELAND
    83. Phil Foden deserves that goal for his performance tonight…

    80. Having set up Declan Rice for a first England goal, Phil Foden now has his first for his country!
Just off the bench, Jadon Sancho tricks his way down the left, plays a smart one-two with Bukayo Saka, and delivers a low cross to Foden.
Head down over the ball, the Man City forward keeps his cool to sweep a lovely left-footed shot into the far corner beyond Hannes Thor Halldorsson.
    A really well-worked goal.
    ENGLAND 3-0 Iceland

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!
    PHIL FODEN MAKES IT THREE!!

    ENGLAND 2-0 ICELAND
    76. The last act of Harry Kane’s night is to crash a free-kick into the Iceland defensive wall and cry for a penalty that is not forthcoming.
The Tottenham striker makes way for Tammy Abraham after another busy night for his country. I wonder what his club manager will make of these 76 minutes.
Also on is Jadon Sancho for Jack Grealish.

    ENGLAND 2-0 ICELAND
    73. Iceland make two more substitutions.
Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson are on for strikers Albert Gudmundsson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson..
In the meantime, Jack Grealish has been fouled.

    ENGLAND 2-0 ICELAND
    72. At least referee Fabio Verissimo is keeping us on our toes.
The Portugues official can’t wait to whip his yellow card out again after Arnason boots over Grealish.

England 4 Iceland 0: Phil Foden bags two Icelandic beauties as Three Lions’s young guns rout 10-man rivals

IN SPIRIT, it felt like Gazza was on the pitch at Wembley. But on this occasion, it was Phil Foden rather than Jack Grealish.
While Grealish once again did his England chances no harm whatsoever, he was upstaged by some midfield wizardry from a player even younger.

Mason Mount scored England’s second goal against IcelandCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

Fitting then, Phil Foden was wearing number 19 – the same number as Gazza.
In only his third England appearance, Foden delivered a type of confident, clever performance which means he still has an outside chance of making that starting XI when England finally play Croatia in their opening game of Euro 2020 – on June 13, 2021.
And the fact he then delivered two killer goals in the final ten minutes sealed a terrific evening for Foden who delivered a few flashes of genius.
It was only against Iceland, who were really bad. And the second half was nowhere near the first as the visitors were down to ten men for the last 36 minutes.

But at least Gareth Southgate has finished what has proved to be a frustrating and at times turbulent 2020 on some sort of a high.
Foden was left out of the squad for last month’s matches after his indiscretion in a Iceland hotel room with two women and Mason Greenwood.
Yet he continued his good form for Manchester City, by creating the opening goal for Declan Rice, delivered some intelligent, incisive passing and then scored those two irresistible goals. Gazza would have been proud.
Guardiola claimed in 2019 that Foden was the most talented player he had ever seen and then promptly failed to select him regularly.

But finally, we are seeing the type of player Foden has always threatened to be.
With Southgate making it clear a 3-4-3 formation is here to stay, it seemed the battle to spearhead the attack with Harry Kane was a fight between Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho with two spots up for grabs.
But now, you can throw Grealish and Foden into the mix. What they may lack in power and pace, they more than make up for with fine technique and some moments of pure magic with the football.
Grealish, who repeatedly won free-kicks in dangerous areas, has certainly ensured his place in the squad for Euro 2020, something which seemed unlikely until Marcus Rashford pulled out of the first England squad before the start of the season.
Another delightful story at Wembley was the fact that both Rice and Mason Mount scored. The pair are lifelong friends, their families still holiday together and it was clearly a special moment for the pair to be playing at Wembley, side-by-side.
Albeit with Rice having more defensive duties, the pair gave England some balance which has been missing in central midfield.

The keepers shirt was laid on the turf by current No1 Pickford in honour of Three Lions legend Ray ClemenceCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

Jordan Pickford holds a ‘Clemence 1’ topCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Even at the back, although they were rarely challenged, Harry Maguire – who missed the trip to Iceland due to his arrest and subsequent court case in Greece – played like Franz Beckenbauer. And there was another extremely encouraging performance from Bukayo Saka.
The only downside was that captain Kane has now gone six games without a goal, spanning a year.
Before the warm-up, behind the goal, Jordan Pickford laid a yellow goalkeeper shirt with ‘Clemence 1’ on the back in memory of the Liverpool legend Ray. For Pickford, that was about the only thing he did all evening.
England struggled to break down their defensive visitors and had not managed a decent attempt on goal until Grealish won a free-kick and Rice delivered a decent run to connect to Foden’s excellent ball into the area.
Another plus point from this England international window has been the performances of Saka.
The wing-back has done well, and will give Ben Chilwell some major competition down the left and he would have scored a goal but for an instinctive save from Ogmundur Kristinsson.

Iceland defender Birkir Mar Saevarsson saw redCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Yet Saka, who also missed a good chance created by Foden at the very end, delivered a cross which the Icelandic defence failed to clear, Kane made a nuisance of himself and Mount a quick took a touch before comfortably scoring his third England goal.
Foden forced a couple of saves from the Icedandic keeper although will feel he should have scored both. But he should not have worried as he found his eye for goal at the end.
Iceland swapped keepers at the break to give Euros hero Hannes Halldorsson a send off as he looks set to retire.
The visitors were reduced to ten men shortly into the second half after Birkir Saevarsson, making his 95th international appearance, landed a second yellow card after tugging the arm of Saka just outside the box.
Grealish was replaced by Sancho, who then teed the ball up for former City academy team-mate Foden who swivelled to score into the corner.
And although that strike was impressive, his second was even better. There seemed little danger but Foden created something out of nothing and fired an unstoppable shot from outside the area.

Shaun Custis says it’s not over the top to compare Jack Grealish to Gazza More

England out of Nations League finals contention: How competition will look as France and Spain qualify

ENGLAND officially failed to qualify for the Nations League finals after slumping to a 2-0 loss to Belgium on Sunday.
The Three Lions had hoped to make it back-to-back appearances at the finals after taking part in the 2019 showpiece.

England officially failed to qualify for the Nations League after losing 2-0 to Belgium on SundayCredit: Reuters

That year, Gareth Southgate and Co lost to Holland in the semi-finals, with Portugal beating the Dutchmen in the final.
England finished third after beating Switzerland in the playoff match.
Are England out of the Nations League finals?
Yes, the dream is over. Southgate’s side won’t be in next year’s finals after recent losses to Belgium and Denmark.
While the Three Lions won’t be appearing in next October’s mini-tournament, there are still a number of teams who can still qualify.

We take a look at who’s already in, who’s out and who’s been relegated to League B, but first…
What is the Nations League format now?

Portugal are the reigning Nations League championsCredit: Alamy Live News
THE Nations League is currently split into four tiers – Leagues A, B, C and D.
Europe’s elite go into League A, with the divisions getting gradually weaker until you reach League D, featuring the likes of San Marino and Liechtenstein.
Here, we’ll focus on League A and the permutations.

League A is split into four groups, with the 16 teams originally split into four pots of seeds based on their world ranking.
One team from each pot of seeds are drawn into four groups; A1, A2, A3 and A4.
In each group, it’s fairly simple: the team finishing top advances to the finals and the team in last place get relegated to League B.
Second and third in each group fail to advance to the finals but maintain their League A status.
World champions France qualified for the finals with a win against Portugal on Saturday while Spain hammered Germany on Tuesday night to progress.
Here’s how the remaining two groups are poised.
    Group A1

How Group A1 looks ahead of the final round of games
Teams: Italy, Holland, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina
    Already qualified: None
Who can still qualify for finals: Italy, Holland, Poland
Relegated to Group B: Bosnia and Herzegovina
THERE’S still everything to play for in group A1 going into the final round of fixtures.
Bosnia and Herzegovina are officially relegated – but the other THREE teams can still qualify for the finals.
Italy sit top on nine points and are favourites to qualify, taking on Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday.
Holland are currently second on eight points with Poland on seven.
They go head-to-head on Wednesday still hoping Italy drop points.
Should Italy lose, whoever wins between Holland and Poland will reach the finals.
A draw will be enough for Italy if Poland win – thanks to the Italians boasting the better head-to-head record thanks to Sunday’s 2-0 win.
But a draw for Italy and a Holland win would mean the Dutch progress.
Should Italy win, they qualify regardless of the Poland vs Holland game.
    Group A2

How Group A2 looks ahead of the final round of games
    Teams: Belgium, Denmark, England, Iceland
    Already qualified: None
Who can still qualify for finals: Belgium, Denmark
    Relegated to Group B: Iceland
AS we all know, England are now out of contention after losing to Belgium.
With one game to go, Belgium have 12 points, Denmark have ten, England have seven, while Iceland – officially relegated – have failed to pick up a single point.
England host Iceland while Denmark travel to Belgium for the final round of fixtures, meaning the scenario is simple.
England vs Iceland is a dead-rubber.
Regardless of the result, Iceland will still be relegated and England can’t progress.
A draw between Belgium and Denmark will see Kevin De Bruyne and Co reach the finals.
A Belgium win will see them through, too.
But a win for Denmark will ensure the Danes reach the final four next year.

He was capped 61 times by England, battling Peter Shilton for the spot between the sticks during the 1980s.
Clemence also spent time coaching with the Three Lions, as well as former club Spurs and Barnet.
And in 1987 he was appointed an MBE for services to football.
Ahead of England’s Nations League clash with Iceland at Wembley, current Three Lions goalie Pickford paid homage by laying down a No1 shirt behind his goal mouth.

The Everton star was joined by fellow England stoppers Nick Pope and Dean Henderson, as well as coach Martyn Margetson.
And all four were sombre as they gently placed Clemence’s shirt behind the net.
Clemence’s family released a statement confirming the icon had “passed away peacefully” on Sunday.
It read: “With great sadness, we write to let you know that Ray Clemence passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his loving family.
