Las Vegas F1 FARCE as fans kicked out after just 8 minutes as Ferrari star hits loose manhole cover at 200mph

FANS labelled Formula One’s return to Las Vegas a “farce” as a drain cover brought the first practice session to a halt after just eight minutes. The issue saw Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari go up in sparks as he drove at 200mph.

This glitzy Grand Prix was supposed to entice the punters to put their chips on F1 being a hit, clearly targeting the high-rollers, some of whom had paid $150,000 a ticket.
F1’s owners Liberty Media’s spending is racing towards the $1billion mark on their pet project, which has been frequently referred to as the “biggest show on Earth”.
But it lasted a few laps before a chunk of concrete and metal manhole cover was ripped from the tarmac and slammed into the floor of Sainz’s Ferrari.
Race Director Niels Wittich stopped proceedings immediately saying the circuit – the second longest on the calendar – posed a safety risk due to potentially unsafe drain covers being sucked up from the downforce of the cars.

Fans in the grandstands booed – it was some introduction to the sometimes shambolic world of F1 that is nothing like the heavily edited adaptation seen on Netflix’s Drive to Survive.
Sainz’s car required repairs and he will even have to serve a grid penalty for taking a third energy store of the season – despite the changes being necessitated by the track farce.
Bored, tired drivers were forced to keep themselves occupied as the beginning of FP2 was delayed until after 2am local time.
Some dedicated fans stayed on-site to try to catch more action… only to be kicked out at 1:30am following a decision by organisers.

Fans online blasted the shambolic start to the weekend, with one writing: “This weekend is becoming more and more of a joke.”
While a second fumed: “I have never been so embarrassed to be a American F1 fan this is awful.”
A third admitted: “This is turning into a farce…”
And another added: “Ok now THAT is ridiculous.”
Blame culture means F1 and the governing body, the FIA, will now point accusing fingers at each other.
But it was a clear example of both sides not learning their lesson from earlier in the season.
The sport dodged a massive bullet at the Qatar Grand Prix where newly installed kerbs ripped apart the Pirelli tyres.
The Italian manufacturer explained the track compromised the safety of their tyres – the upshot was that the drivers were forced to make a pitstop every 18 laps, culminating in a perfect storm that eventually saw drivers close to collapsing soon after the chequered flag.
What was learned from that? After all, there was no support series, no test event.
Fast forward a few weeks and we are faced with the same situation. No support series, no test event, another safety risk.
Ninety-nine per cent show and one per cent sporting eventMax Verstappen
Could it have been prevented? Difficult to know now until a report is published but the upshot is it leaves F1’s owners in a difficult position.
Even before the red flag, the previous day reigning world champion Max Verstappen openly criticised the race as “99 per cent show and one per cent sporting event”.
The local residents too have slammed the race, saying the building work has caused traffic issues with taxi drivers left furious at the loss of business.
Local landmarks have been boarded up, much to the frustration of tourists. Restaurateurs too are upset that the restrictions have led to cancellations.
F1 hoped that this race was the new showpiece to rival the likes of Monaco but it has so far been a classic case of F1 continuing to shoot itself in the foot.
The last time F1 raced in Vegas it was a stinker around the Caesars Palace car park in 1982.
And then there was the farce in 2005 United States Grand Prix held in Indianapolis where only six cars competed due to fears over the safety of the Michelin tyres.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was asked if this latest set-back was a “black eye” for F1 in the US – prompting an extraordinary blast.
He said: “It is not a black eye, it is only P1. Nobody is going to talk about it any more.
“How can you even talk about a black eye about an event that sets new standards to everyone. You are speaking about a f****** drain cover, give credit to the people who make this event possible and who made this sport bigger than ever.”
    ‘UNACCEPTABLE’
Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur, on the other hand, fumed: “Carlos hit something and it hit the engine and battery. I think it is unsatisfactory.
“I do not want to look at the bigger picture. It has costs us a lot of money. It was unacceptable.”
The latest set-back will no doubt hammer F1’s share price which has dropped all week.
But it could have been a lot worse, had Sainz, or another other driver been injured, or indeed actor Brad Pitt, who was due to shoot a scene for his new F1 movie, which has incidentally been delayed 12 months.
The drain covers will be welded shut for the rest of the weekend, but for many the damage has already been done.
And as any punter in Vegas will tell you, when luck is against you, it is perhaps time to call it quits.
It wasn’t a bad night for everyone, however, with F1 legend Jacques Villeneuve marrying partner Guilia Marra in the paddock.
Although presenter Laura Winter was left terrified, when three men painted blue interrupted her broadcast.

It will be extremely difficult for Hamilton to catch up with the Mexican though, with Perez winning twice already this season and making the podium eight times.
The Brit on the other hand is yet to win a race and has only managed to get on the podium on six occasions.
The race itself could be chaos with track temperatures set to be around five degrees, far from optimal for F1 tyres which thrive in warmer conditions.

F1 fans can’t unsee bizarre optical illusion as Las Vegas GP circuit compared to Simpsons character

FORMULA ONE fans have been left in hysterics over an unusual optical illusion spotted in a Grand Prix track.Las Vegas hosts the sport for the first time since 1982 this Sunday.
The Las Vegas street track makes its debut this weekend
Fans are convinced the track is in the shape of Spider-Pig – the adorable pig that stars in The SImpsons Movie
The track is a street circuit that goes along the iconic strip.
It features 17 corners and a 1.18 miles straight.
Fans taking a look at the track in the build-up to the Grand Prix have noticed it’s shape depicts something very different.
Looking at an aerial shot of the circuit, the track reminds many of the shape of Spider-Pig from The Simpsons Movie.

In the 2007 film, a much-loved scene shows Homer lifting the animal up onto his ceiling to help it walk upside down.
The outline of Spider-Pig is hilariously similar to the look of the Las Vegas GP track.
Eagle-eyed fans could not believe it, saying: “The Simpsons have only gone and done it again with another prediction. The Las Vegas F1 track is Spider-Pig.”
The cartoon comedy has a spooky history of guessing the future with the show having scenes involving FaceTime, Donald Trump as president and picking the correct Super Bowl winner years before it occurred.

Las Vegas GP is 99% show and 1% sport… the $500million Hollywood show has made me look a clown, slams Verstappen

The Red Bull ace along with several other drivers criticised the inaugural race – saying the gruelling schedule and the night-time timings have left them shattered.
When quizzed about the race, which has cost F1 owners Liberty Media over $500million to put on, Verstappen said: “It is 99 percent show and one percent sporting event.
“I just want to always focus on the performance side of things, I don’t like all the things around it anyway, I know in some places they are part of it but let’s say it’s not in my interest.
“[The track is] not very interesting. Just not many corners, to be honest. It will also depend quite a bit on how grippy it is. This is not really my thing.”

F1 have been busting a gut to promote their showpiece with a special launch event with a number of singers performing including Kylie Minogue and John Legend.
The drivers were all thrust up upon the stage too before sheepishly waving to half-empty grandstands.
Verstappen added: “For me you can all skip these things. It’s not about the singer, it’s just standing up there, you look like a clown.”
This race comes off the back of a triple header across three continents – and put as a back-to-back race with Abu Dhabi, some 26 hours of flying away – has played havoc with jet-lag.

Last night, media sessions were cancelled as F1 requested that drivers attend a party at the Wynn hotel in yet another requirement for drivers.
However, Red Bull’s drivers pushed back, as too did Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll from Aston Martin.
Verstappen said: “When you are here it is not so much of a problem, but then we have to fly to Abu Dhabi, where there is already a 12 hour time difference, but also a completely different time zone…
“Basically, we live on a Japanese time schedule. But then almost a different day. I don’t really get that, it is very tiring also at the end of the season that we have to do this. It doesn’t really make a lot of sense.”
Stroll was also quizzed about whether he enjoyed the opening ceremony.
He said: “Not really, no, not my thing, not really my thing. I didn’t sign up for that part of it all.
“We’re racing drivers, I think sometimes it goes too much in the whole Hollywood  side of things.
“I just like racing cars, not trying to be a Hollywood star.”
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton has defended the race saying that he is not suffering any of the effects of jet-lag and he understands why Liberty Media are going to such lengths to host the Las Vegas race.
He said: “The sport continues to grow. It is a business ultimately. You’ll still see good racing here.
“It is just such a big country here and to really tap into the market and capture the audience we needed.
“One race [in the US] wasn’t enough, this is one of the most iconic cities there is and all the lights, the show, it is a big show for sure.
