Although New Zealanders can’t obtain a driver’s licence until they are 16, younger drivers are able to compete under certain conditions.
On MotorSport New Zealand’s website, it says that the junior driver program “allows people aged between 12 and 16 the ability to obtain a competition licence”.
According to MotorSport, it is not uncommon for young drivers to participate in these competitions.
However, the organisation has announced that it will be undertaking a thorough investigation.

“The event took place on Arcadia Road in Paparoa which was closed to the public for the duration of the event under the authority of the local Road Controlling Authority,” MotorSport said in its statement.
“It is too early in the investigation to comment on what the main contributing factors to the crash were, however, it does not seem as though the road was in a detrimental or unsafe condition.”
Motorsport New Zealand president Wayne Christie added: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of these two competitors and all involved with the Arcadia Road Rallysprint.
“The whole motorsport community will be understandably shocked and upset by this terrible tragedy.
“We will be offering support to all those involved in the coming days.”

F1 legend keen on shock retirement U-turn after Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari ‘triggered something’

LEWIS HAMILTON’S surprise transfer to Ferrari has “triggered something” that could see a Formula One world champion return to the grid, according to Ralf Schumacher.Hamilton, 39, activated a break clause in his Mercedes contract which will see him leave the team at the end of this season before joining the Scuderia in 2025.

And the move is now said to have piqued the interest for a return to the sport for four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.
Speaking to Sky Sports, six-time race winner Schumacher named 36-year-old Vettel as one possible candidate to replace Hamilton at the Silver Arrows.
Schumacher said: “I’ve heard that Sebastian Vettel wants to drive again. Of course, a gap has to be closed now.
“You saw what was going on on the stock market after Lewis Hamilton’smove to Ferrari, that triggered something.”

Vettel retired from the sport at the end of 2022 after 299 race starts for Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin.
Hamilton’s departure leaves George Russell not knowing who his team-mate will be next season.
And while Schumacher does not doubt the talent of Vettel, who questions whether he would be able to make such a big leap back into the sport after three years absent.
“Whether George Russell has the charisma to replace Lewis Hamilton worldwide in terms of marketing or Sebastian Vettel as a German driver at Mercedes, that’s probably a size too big for him.”

SunSport named five possible candidates who could replace the seven-time world champion, from 17-year-old Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli to Mick Schumacher or Alex Albon.
Fernando Alonso, who replaced Vettel at Aston Martin, has also been linked with a shock switch.
Inside Lewis Hamilton’s £13m collection of supercars including £4m classic and £1.6m ride made entirely for him
Alonso had two seasons out of the sport before returning in 2021 and has remained one of the best on the grid, meaning it is in the realm of possibility for Vettel to replicate the Spaniard.
However, Schumacher is concerned Mercedes will not be as competitive as they hope to be in 2025.
He added: “I’m a bit disappointed with Mercedes, I have the feeling that things will continue as they did last year.
“That could also be a reason why Lewis Hamilton lost faith in it and followed the call of Fred Vasseur.”

Christian, who has categorically denied all claims, was put through an eight-hour grilling as part of an independent investigation and his fate will reportedly be decided within 10 days.
It risks ending his 19-year career with Red Bull Racing, where he’s paid in excess of £8million a year, and putting a sizeable dent in the fortune earned by him and his ex-Spice Girl wife Geri.
The couple have netted tens of millions of pounds over the years, with a fortune of at least £50million, which has afforded them an enviable and comfortable country lifestyle.
From £2.4million in rental properties to a horseracing firm and royalties, we look into Geri and Christian Horner’s finances.

Her popstar earnings were paid in Wonderful Productions Limited, which was set up in 1997 – one year before the singer left the band.
During the company’s first three years of trading, it reported a £13.1million turnover and that she paid herself £8.9million.
No pay disclosures were reported by her in accounts between 2001 and 2018. Figures suggest the firm entered a non-trading phase between 2009 and 2012.

The bombshell claims that have rocked F1F1 was rocked earlier this month by the sudden news that Christian Horner had been placed under investigation by Red Bull’s Austria-based parent company.
This was thought to be over a “dossier of incriminating material” regarding “inappropriate and controlling behaviour” towards one female, The Telegraph reported.
Red Bull’s Austrian parent company flew an independent lawyer to the UK to question the multi-millionaire race ace and his accuser.
The former racing driver, who runs world champion Max Verstappen’s all-conquering Red Bull team, endured an eight-hour grilling over the claims last week.
Most recently however, more allegations have come out as the De Telegraaf reported that Horner allegedly sent sex messages to his employee “over an extended period of time”.
Messages were said to have been saved and presented as evidence to the external barrister running the inquiry after the woman made a complaint last December.
Mr Horner categorically denied the new allegations and is thought to be taking legal action against De Telegraaf.
An F1 source told The Sun last week that “Christian has not been sacked or asked to resign and he is not going to resign”.
The investigation raises the question of who could take over the helm of the all-conquering racing team of world champion Max Verstappen.
His wife Geri Halliwell is also said to be “terrified her life will unravel” amid Horner’s “inappropriate behaviour” probe.
The ex-Spice Girl, who was “in floods of tears” when the Red Bull boss was hit with the bombshell allegations, fears the drama will drag on for years, a source has claimed.
But Geri, 51, is understood to be standing by her husband.
She has told pals: “Christian has done nothing wrong.”
Horner has overseen a huge period of success for the racing team – winning multiple F1 championships with Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen.
Red Bull has won seven Formula One world drivers’ championships and six world constructors’ titles under Horner’s leadership.
Last season, the team won 21 of the 22 races on the global F1 tour, and Verstappen, 26, won the drivers’ crown.
Horner was awarded a CBE for services to motorsport in the 2024 New Year’s Honours List

The Daily Mail reported that the firm was worth £3million the following year and she paid herself £1million from the company.
The paper also claims Wonderful Productions made £152,000 profit in 2022 and Geri paid herself £762,240 that year.
Last year’s accounts showed losses of £77,994 but held reserves of nearly £1.4million.
Geri also has the firm Falcon Queen Limited, which was set up in May 2021 to provide “business support activities”. All shares are owned by Wonderful Productions.
According to the Mail, Falcon Queen Limited made losses of £75,521 last year and plunged £276,000 into the red.
Geri is still believed to receive earnings for Spice Girls Limited – a joint venture between her, Victoria, Mel B, Mel C and Emma Bunton.

Alongside music, the singer has had successful stints as an author.
Geri released two autobiographies – If Only, which became a best-seller in 1999 and sold more than a million copies in the UK alone, and Just For The Record three years later.
In 2008, she released a six-part children’s series called Ugenia Lavender, which sold 250,000 copies in its first five months.
Last year, Geri released her latest children’s book Rosie Frost And The Falcon Queen.
Her earnings have been topped up over the years by other media work including a stint as a judge on The X Factor in 2011 and 2012 and Australia’s Got Talent in 2013.
She also made cameos in TV shows including Sex And The City, US show Extra and appeared in the films Spice World, Crank: High Voltage and Gran Turismo.

    Horseracing empire
The Horners have a number of race horses, all of whom are named after Geri’s songs and covers including It’s Raining Men, Look At Mee, Lift Me Up and Mi Chico Latino.
Among the most successful is Lift Me Up, an eight-year-old male who was born in 2016 and cost £28,000.
The horse, real name Hector, was lined up as a potential Cheltenham Festival hopeful but hasn’t run since last May.
Lift Me Up, who has raced at least twice, earned the couple £2,361.18 in prize money for winning a race in front of 70,000 punters, according to the British Horseracing Authority.

Last year, work finished on a 14-horse stable, including two foaling stalls, at their Oxfordshire home and ex-jockey Maxine Filby was hired to run the yard.
Christian told The Telegraph his passion for horses was “just a bit of fun” and “escapism away from the madness of F1”.
He said: “We don’t really know what we’re doing but it’s exciting. It’s something Geri and I both get a kick out of and something we enjoy as a family.”

Horner, who denies any wrongdoing, will reportedly have his fate decided within 10 days – leaving him potentially out of a job ahead of the season opener.
But an insider claims he could leave Red Bull Racing even if he survives the inquiry.
The source told the Daily Mail: “How can he stay on with those sort of fault lines in place?”
Another colleague added the Red Bull boss “looks worn down and worn out”.

Horner reportedly has a history of feuding with many factions at Red Bull, most notably with former driver Helmut Marko, the Salzburg-based head of Red Bull’s Formula One Teams.
On Thursday, he addressed the new bombshell sexting probe and declared he wanted a conclusion as “soon as possible”.
Horner refused to comment directly on the allegations made against him during the press conference, stating “I cannot comment on the process or the time scale.”

The racing boss, who has led the Austrian team since its formation in 2005, was all smiles yesterday as he signed autographs, posed for selfies with fans and spoke to his drivers.
The allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” against Horner come amid a power struggle at Red Bull Racing.
Red Bull chief Christian Horner arrives for press conference ahead of testing for Bahrain Grand Prix
Rumours of trouble brewing beneath the surface within the team’s leadership have been swirling since the death of co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022.
After the billionaire’s death, Red Bull drafted in a new board of directors to oversee the business.
Former RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff was appointed chief executive.
Despite Red Bull enjoying its most successful season in F1 history in 2023, there was speculation of a rift between Horner and Helmut Marko – Red Bull GmBH’s motorsport advisor.
Rumours even went as far as to suggest Horner was determined to get rid of Marko, 80, from the team, reports the Telegraph.
The former professional driver has overseen the Red Bull driver development programme since 2005 and was a driving force in bringing Max Verstappen to the team.
But speculation was played down, with Horner only acknowledging there had been a “small difference of opinion” between himself and Marko.
He even suggested rumours may have been fanned by opponents, adding: “As we’ve tied up both championships, there’s not a lot to be talking about, so it’s very easy for others to wind the situation up.”
But Marko hinted at an internal wrangle when he commented: “I have a contract until the end of 2024 and in the end it’s the shareholders’ decision, not Christian Horner’s, and in the end it’s me who decides.”
Formula 1 reporter Erik van Haren said the power struggle appears to be coming to a “climax now”.
He told De Telegraaf: “[Horner and Marko] become more and more like water and fire.
“Although, of course, in the publicity they pretend that nothing is wrong.
“Horner is, of course, the team principal and the CEO of Red Bull Racing. More than a thousand people work there. Super important for the operational side of the whole story.

The ex-Spice Girl, who was “in floods of tears” when the Red Bull boss was hit with the bombshell allegations, fears the drama will drag on for years, a source has claimed.

Geri Halliwell planning to skip first F1 race with Christian Horner as she’s ‘flattened’ by ‘sext’ probe, pals claim

GERI Halliwell is set to skip the first F1 race of the season as she’s been left “flattened” by the “sext” probe into her husband Christian Horner, pals have claimed. The Red Bull Racing chief, 50, is the focus of an internal investigation by the team into his alleged behaviour towards a female colleague.

Geri’s pals said she has allegedly been struggling to eat and sleep amid her husband’s ‘sext’ probe
    He strongly denies any wrongdoing.
Geri is said to be taken aback by the probe but is vowing to stand by her husband.
But now the ex-Spice Girl may skip next week’s Bahrain Grand Prix as she doesn’t want to face the ongoing scrutiny, a pal has claimed.
A source said: “Geri is devastated and has been struggling to eat and sleep.

“Her family and fellow Spice Girls are worried.
“I hear Christian is trying to pep her up to stay positive, but she has gone to ground in the way she did after she left the Spice Girls.”
“She’s not speaking to anyone,” they told the Daily Mail.
Geri is supported by her Spanish mother, Ana Maria, and her sister, Natalie, but she has “just a few” other friends on whom she can count on.

Meanwhile, she is doing her best to be there for her adoring husband.
The pal said: “I believe she is in on all the lawyers’ calls.”
Christian Horner praises Red Bull’s ‘very inclusive team culture’ in first public appearance since ‘behaviour’ probe
“Christian has been telling her that everything is fine – and will be fine – but she just wants it to go away.”
The insider continued: “It’s a real problem as her focus is absolutely him.
“She is completely loyal to him; that remains.”
Christian Horner’s fate at Red Bull will reportedly be decided within 10 days – leaving the F1 boss potentially out of a job ahead of the season opener.
His future at the all-conquering team of world champion Max Verstappen still hangs in the balance after shock allegations of “inappropriate and controlling behaviour” were made by a female staffer.
But in recent days, fresh claims allege that Horner also sent the colleague “sexually suggestive” texts.
The bombshell claims that have rocked F1F1 was rocked earlier this month by the sudden news that the sport’s longest-standing team principal had been placed under investigation by Red Bull’s Austria-based parent company.

Red Bull arrived in Bahrain on Tuesday evening for pre-season testing, with Horner still in his £8-million-a-year role .
So far, it has been “business as usual” in the pit lane – the team principal’s go-to phrase since news of the scandal broke.
However, results of the independent inquiry will reportedly be handed over to the Red Bull board in the next few days.
The probe threatens to overshadow the start of the new F1 season – but a final decision is expected before the opening Grand Prix race kicks off on March 2, the Mail reports.
On Thursday, he addressed the new bombshell sexting probe and declared he wanted a conclusion as “soon as possible”.
He refused to comment directly on the allegations made against him during the press conference, stating “I cannot comment on the process or the time scale.”

“I think everybody would like a conclusion as soon as possible but I am really not at liberty to talk about the process,” he added.

I used to play as Michael Schumacher growing up, joining Ferrari is a boyhood dream, says Lewis Hamilton

The move stunned F1 as he had only agreed a contract extension with the Silver Arrows last summer.
Now, as he prepares for his final season with Mercedes, he says he has always been driven by the lure of one day driving for F1’s most famous team, who have not won the title since 2007.
He said: “I think for every driver, growing up, watching the history, watching Michael Schumacher in his prime, probably all of us sit in our garage and see the screen pop up, and you see the driver in the red cockpit.
“You wonder what it might be like to be surrounded by the red.

“You go to the Italian Grand Prix, and you see the sea of red Ferrari fans, and you can only stand in awe of that.
“It’s a team that’s not had huge success really since, mostly obviously from Michael’s days, but obviously since 2007, and I saw it as a huge challenge.
“Without a doubt, even as a kid, I used to play on Grand Prix 2 as Michael in that car. So it definitely is a dream, and I’m really, really excited about it.”
Hamilton will link up with his old GP2 boss Fred Vasseur at Ferrari and admits he had a big hand in convincing him to jump ship.

“I thought that he was going to be an amazing team manager at some stage and progress to F1, but at the time, he wasn’t interested in that.
“It was really cool to see him step into the Alfa [Romeo] team. Then when he got the job at Ferrari, I was just so happy for him.
“I think just the stars aligned, I think it really wouldn’t have happened without him.
“So I’m really grateful and really excited about the work that he’s doing there.”
