      Lando Norris takes up drumming ahead of new F1 season with McLaren star getting lessons from One Direction star

      LANDO NORRIS is looking to get in a winning rhythm with McLaren this season after taking up drumming.The 21-year-old is well-known, particularly among his younger fans, for playing online computer games and streaming the videos on social media.

      But the Bristol-born racer has now taken to learning the instrument and been having video lessons with One Direction live drummer, Josh Devine.
      Thankfully, Norris, who lives in Woking not too far from the team’s factory, says he has some understanding neighbours.
      He said: “So far, I have had no complaints. I have only once played late, around 9pm, but I try to play in the afternoon or the early evenings.
      “We aren’t in joining houses, so I have a little bit of sound breathing room.
      “It is good to have something different to focus on and I get to let loose and to get rid of some of the anger I always have, but it is good to learn something new.
      “I did a lesson with Josh and we streamed it on Twitch and he taught me a few things, that was pretty cool.
      “It is just about trying to learn  it and see the improvements in yourself. There are lots of things I always want to try to do, like learning to play golf.
      “But I don’t commit to it and do it properly. You just go out there and practice but I don’t get very far and I end up giving it up.

      “I just want to learn something I can be good at. Singing was off the cards at an early stage.
      “There is no way to get me better at that so drumming was the next thing and it has been good fun.”
      This will be Norris’ third season in F1 at McLaren but he will be without his usual sparring partner, Carlos Sainz, who has joined Ferrari.
      McLaren boss Zak Brown said for Norris it was like having a “bigger brother” but with Sainz now gone, he is relishing seeing him form a new partnership with Daniel Ricciardo.
      Like Norris, the Aussie is a bit of a practical joker but there is also an element of competition between the two.
      And while jokes are not off limits, Norris says that he has matured during his time in F1 and is now ready to become the team’s leader.

      He added: “I think there has been a lot more emphasis on doing everything I can do for the best in myself and the best for the team.
      “Over the past two years, it has been about realising, not when you can have fun or not, but about what you have to do to perform at the best.
      “So there has been a lot more time spent on working in different areas – working with my engineers and my trainer and making sure everything is as good as it can be to.
      “There is certainly more focus from my side. There is now a sense I can lead things in the team.
      “There is a bigger role I have to take on because of my experience with this team and Daniel cannot fill that.
      “So that is my responsibility to lead that and drive the team on.
      “It does not mean we are not going to laugh and have fun every now again because everyone does, but there is more focus this year.”
      One of the most endearing images of the last few years has been the post race pictures of Norris helping his mechanics strip down his F1 car and pack away the garage.

      The sport runs on a tight schedule during pack up as they race to get all the components to the next GP, so every extra pair of hands help.
      So while his peers have been on their way home in private jets, Norris has been up to his elbows – and that’s something that he doesn’t plan to change.
      He said: “No, that’s absolutely not stopping. That has not got anything to do with leading the team.
      “That’s something I can do which I enjoy and the mechanics accept. It is just me helping them.
      “It is pure decency in a way. I don’t think that is involved in me becoming a better driver and taking this role within McLaren.
      “It is something different. That is me being a human being and just wanting to help out.”
      Norris, who has one podium to his name, has an extra reason to feel confident about this season.
      Last year, McLaren defied expectations to finish in third place in the Constructors’ Championship, earning lucrative prize money.

      It was the first big step to getting back on to the top of the podium and while they are not predicting wins this season, they have improved their chances after swapping to Mercedes engines.
      They also looked quick and reliable during the three-day test in Bahrain earlier in the month, even if Norris is playing down their performance.
      He added: “It was a good test for us and, touch-wood, there aren’t any problems for us.
      “But the whole team, the guys and the girls are on top of things and looking at every area and improving where we possibly can.
      “As for me, getting used to the feeling of a new engine and the different buttons on the steering wheel, it was like we had been with them for a while.
      “But it is still not prefect. There are still things we need to make better, which is cool. So there is more to come from the car and the engine.” More

      He is frequently quizzed about the weighty pressure his surname brings – yet he is remarkably cool about dealing with it as he prepares to make his F1 debut at the same age his father did.
      Ahead of this weekend’s race, he spoke with a boyish charm about receiving his first F1 paddock pass, as the nostalgia came rushing back in waves.
      He said: “It is motivation and pride. I am happy to be here… I am happy to have brought back the Schumacher name into F1.
      “I have done it with championships on my back so we have proven I am able to drive a race car. So I don’t feel a blink of pressure from it.
      “It’s an amazing feeling being with the team and knowing this is it and I’m getting close to my first race in F1.
      “I got my pass – you know, the proper red F1 pass – and I was like, ‘Woah!’ I remember seeing my dad having one and I always wanted one, but obviously I didn’t get one.
      “I have one now and it’s amazing and I am really looking forward to it.”
      Schumacher will make his debut for the Haas team.

      Having won the Formula 2 series last year, he was offered his chance to step up to F1 as the rules prevent the champion from staying in F2.
      He has been given his opportunity by the Banbury-based team off the back of the fact he is part of the Ferrari Drivers Academy.
      Haas are Ferrari’s customers hence it makes sense for them to take the Italian team’s best rookie, while the dad of his teammate and fellow rookie, Nikita Mazepin, helps pay the bills through his title sponsorship.
      It needs remembering that Mick was skiing with his dad when Michael suffered serious head injuries on December 29th 2013.
      Mick has since explained that his dad was his “idol and role model” but he gives nothing away about the ex-world champion’s current medical condition.

      It is a fiercely guarded secret and that is the families prerogative and one that Mick respects.
      But it does not mean he ignores his father’s achievements in F1. In fact, it is the opposite, he embraces it.
      In F2, Mick raced with “SCH” to represent his position on the timing screens, but that has now been switched to “MSC” the three letters used by his father to distinguish himself from his brother Ralf.
      “It’s quite emotional for me to see MSC on the timing screen again.
      “It’s a special bond I have to it, and I hope it’s nice for everybody to see it there.”
      There is a further nod to his dad’s achievement hidden behind his racing number for F1.

      He’s picked the number 47. A rather odd choice on the front of it, but also quite poignant.
      He added: “Four and seven are two of the numbers that I really like.
      “Four for [the number I raced with in] F3 and the seven because seven is a number that is very close to me as well, partly because of that [his dad’s seven titles].
      “If we calculated all the birthdays of our family together it would equal 47.
      “So it was a pretty nice feature to it and I think it just underlined that we should choose that number.”

      He also owns a three-bedroom apartment in Switzerland and like many F1 drivers, he has a house in Monaco.
      But in the past, Hamilton has revealed that the place he likes to call home is in Colorado, America.
      Speaking to the BBC, he said: “I’ve never really been home [before].
      “In my winter, I go to the mountains [in Colorado], which I really see as my main home, because it’s a house and it’s full of love and memories from people, the family that come every winter.
      “Where I live in Monaco, it’s been somewhere I go back to and I’d call home but it lacks those memories.
      “I’d be there for short periods of time. So it’s not been the easiest.”

      Hamilton has given a fans a glimpse of his Colorado home on Instagram.
      He has shared a snap of himself enjoying pancakes for breakfast while sat outside.
      The F1 star loves to soak up the views and explore the wilderness that surrounds the house.
      Hamilton has even taken his dogs for a spin around the lake on his paddleboard.
      There’s no end of activities that he can do while up the mountains with his loved ones.
      He has sped around on a snowmobile, raced up the hills on his motorbike and snowboarded down the cliffs.
      The inside of his Colorado pad has been kitted out with as much wood as possible.
      He has a huge wooden bookshelf, complete with a globe and a number of other statues.
      Hamilton could choose to celebrate his seventh title with a trip up to the mountains soon.

      And he dished out his favourite paintings, model cars and even a lucky silver rabbit’s foot to others.
      He left the bulk of his fortune to his wife since 1980 Lady Susie, plus daughter Allison and son Elliot.
      Probate office figures showed the star, who lived in Mayfair, central London, left £22.08million in his will but this did not include US assets.

      Seven-time world champion Hamilton, 36, was KO’d by coronavirus for the Sakhir Grand Prix and Williams driver Russell deputised.
      Russell qualified in second place just 0.026s behind the other Mercedes driven by Valtteri Bottas and was leading the race by ten seconds before problems in the pit and with his tyres cost him a maiden win.
      Hamilton is currently unemployed after his Merc deal expired and revealed he has ‘lots going on’ as talks over a new £40million deal continue.
      Horner, 47, told RacingNews365: “I think Verstappen is the best, and George Russell’s performance at Mercedes confirmed that for me.
      “Max and Lewis stand out for me but, while we should definitely not be blind to what Hamilton has achieved, he does have a good package at his disposal.
      “While Max has to get more out of his car.
      “At Mercedes, a Williams driver can qualify himself directly on the front row and Russell almost won the race. 
      “However, if at Red Bull someone has to get into Verstappen’s car, for example if Max had corona, then nobody will reach his level.”

      Hamilton was knighted by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours list and also picked up the BBC Sports Personality of the Year gong for 2020.
      The Stevenage-born icon eclipsed Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins last year to fuel the GOAT debate.
      Rival Sebastian Vettel insisted Schumacher is the greatest while Hamilton slammed critics ‘with a bee in their bonnet’.
      Verstappen finished third behind the two Mercedes in 2020 and Horner thinks there is plenty more to come from the Dutch star after confirming he hasn’t reached his full potential yet.
      He added: “The others have a hard time compared to Max’s performance.
      “If you look at his performance in Abu Dhabi: his pole was phenomenal and then he controlled the race in a very mature way from start to finish.
      “His racing craft is excellent, as is his tyre management.
      “Max has become better at ‘reading’ the race, giving feedback to the team, but also, for example, in dealing with disappointment. He has matured very much in those areas.”

      Lewis Hamilton admits he faces a battle to defend Formula One crown as Max Verstappen snatches Bahrain pole

      LEWIS HAMILTON knows he is not going to get it all his own way this season after seeing how tough his title defence is going to be.Max Verstappen took a brilliant pole for Sunday’s Bahrain GP with a sensational lap that gave Red Bull their first back-to-back pole positions since 2013.
      Hamilton, who is looking for an eighth world title, had no answer to Verstappen’s pace and admitted he drove the nuts off his Merc.

      There was no hiding the glum faced in the Mercedes garage as Hamilton qualified in second place and Valtteri Bottas took third, with boss Toto Wolff admitting they have a real fight on their hands.
      He said: “Every deficit is difficult to take and it is the first race of the season and Red Bull have the quicker car in Bahrain than us.
      “I am proud of how we recovered from the test, that was suboptimal and now the fight is on.
      “If we analysed the regulations and say ‘that’s it,’ then we could not be fighters.
      “We just need to get that car in its sweet spot so it can combat with our competitors.
      “The car is just not in a happy place and Bahrain was not great for us last year, the track layout and asphalt Red Bull seem to master it better than us.
      “We just need to do what we have done in the last years and understand the car and the tyres and optimise the details and then we will be back in the fight.”

      Hamilton joined Wolff in putting on a brave face as Verstappen celebrated pole having dominated winter preseason testing and all three practice sessions.
      It was Verstappen’s fourth pole of his career but today’s start will see Hamilton line up alongside the Dutchman for the first time when Verstappen has been on pole.
      Hamilton added: “I gave it everything I had and ultimately it was not quick enough. It was the best I could do. I got everything from the car.”
      And the Brit admitted it could have been a lot worse based on their preseason form in testing, which was hampered by handling and reliability issues, as this year’s new rules, introduced to reel in Merc’s advantage, began to bite.
      He said: “We did a good job from testing so to be that close when at testing we were further behind.
      “It is closer than we expected. It is a good step forward.
      “We thought it would be double the gap you saw, so that is down to the fantastic work the people have been doing at the factory.
      “With these rule changes we are down in certain places and we have to catch them up.
      “Of course we want to be first but we knew it would be a challenge and we knew Red Bull are faster than us.
      “The regulations peg us back but we work on these things to do the best we can.”

      Of course, this result is only qualifying on race one of the new season.
      And while there is an air of optimism that Red Bull can break Merc’s seven-year stranglehold on both the drivers and team’s championship, Verstappen is remaining cautious.
      He said: “I am very happy to be in pole position and shows the guys have been working hard with the adjustments to the car.
      “It is what you always aim for and in the last few years it has not happened but we knew what our weaknesses were last year and we have worked on them.
      “We had a good test but there are no guarantees for the race weekend.”
      Red Bull boss, Christian Horner, added: “That’s the real first test of the year. You can see it’s nip and tuck.
      “I think it’s going to be very, very tight tomorrow. The whole team has worked hard over the winter and Honda have been fantastic.
      “Mercedes – look at how they have turned up. Everyone was writing them off. It’ll be massively hard for us to beat them but we’ll be there.”
      But it was bittersweet for Red Bull as newboy Sergio Perez qualified down in 11th place, while returning two-time world champion, Fernando Alonso, will start in ninth.

      Schumacher junior won the Formula 2 title last season and has made no secret of his dreams to follow his father into F1.
      The 22-year-old is backed by the Ferrari Driver Academy and has effectively been loaned to Haas, who are Ferrari’s customer and they use the Italian team’s engines.
      Schumacher will be eager to impress on the big stage but says he is comfortable and proud to bring the family name back to F1.

      The final driver to complete the line up on the grid for 2021, the Mexican has joined Red Bull. It promises to be a major coup by the Milton Keynes based team – and could prove to be a career-defining move for Perez.
      He has now been in F1 for 10 years, has plenty of experience with Sauber, McLaren, Force India and Racing Point and could keep Max Verstappen on his toes.

      A coincidence? The 26-year-old has now joined Ferrari to partner Charles Leclerc, 23,  giving Ferrari their youngest driver line up in 50 years.

      The Aussie has joined McLaren as a replacement for Sainz. With seven-wins under his belt, Ricciardo is looking to move on from his frustrating time at Renault, where he was plagued by reliability issues. He will partner Brit Lando Norris at McLaren.

      Completing the swap, the four time world champion has replaced Perez at Racing Point – now Aston Martin.
      Vettel had a shocking year in 2020, finishing down in 13th place in the drivers’ championship.
      At 33, Vettel still has plenty of years left in him and Aston are hoping they can help him rediscover the form that won him four crowns at Red Bull.
      NIKITA MAZEPIN
      The controversial Russian driver will partner Schumacher at Haas, as the American team go for a rookie pairing.
      He finished fifth in the F2 championship last season but almost lost his seat for a social media post where he groped a woman’s breast. His dad is a billionaire, who sponsors the team.
      YUKI TSONODA
      The first F1 driver to be born in the 2000s, the Japanese ace has joined Red Bull’s B-team AlphaTauri. He impressed during preseason testing and can learn a lot from his teammate, and Italian GP winner, Pierre Gasly.

      ROMAIN GROSJEAN
      The Frenchman was already out before his fiery smash in the Sakhir GP. He has since recovered and will spend this season racing in IndyCar.
      KEVIN MAGNUSSEN
      The Dans also left the Haas team and will race in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the US and the World Endurance Championship for Peugeot.
      DANIIL KYVAT
      The Russian has again found himself out of the Red Bull stable. This time he has joined the Alpine team as a reserve driver.

      Another driver to feel the axe at Red Bull. The London-born Thai racer has been demoted to reserve and test driver for the team.
