      Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s brutal F1 title race must see rule changed in 2022, claims Nico Rosberg

      FORMER Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg says rules need to be changed after Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen’s physical title race.The 2021 season went right down to the wire and ended up with Verstappen controversially clinching his first F1 title on the final lap.

      There was also a fiery debate around Safety Car procedures.
      How drivers overtake each other, as well as wheel-to-wheel action has also been scrutinised.
      But 2016 champ and former rival of Hamilton says the newly-elected FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has the opportunity to make changes.
      Speaking to Sky Sports, Rosberg said: “The sport needs to make progress.
      “It starts even with all the overtaking, the wheel-to-wheel action.
      “The FIA needs to tighten all that up so that we don’t have all these discussions.

      Martha Earnhardt dead at 91: Mom of Nascar legend Dale Sr and grandmother of Dale Jr passes away as racing fans mourn

      THE mother of Nascar legend Dale Earnhardt Sr and grandmother of Dale Earnhardt Jr died on Christmas evening at the age of 91. The famed Nascar family released a statement on Sunday confirming Martha Earnhardt’s death, calling her “the matriarch to multiple generations of race fans.”

      “As we grieve her loss and begin to imagine life without our beloved ‘Mamaw,’ we find solace in knowing she is at peace in eternal glory and in joyous reunion with her husband Ralph and sons Dale, Randy and Danny,” Kelley Earnhardt Miller posted on Twitter.
      Kelley is the daughter of Martha and sister of Dale Earnhardt Jr.
      In an obituary posted to the Nascar website, Zack Albert wrote that Martha was a “treasure” to millions of fans, and regularly opened her home to travelers visiting the “Dale Trail,” a series of racing landmarks around Cabarrus County.
      Martha only raced once, Albert wrote, in a “powder puff derby” at Hickory Speedway.
      “She crashed, lamenting the lack of practice before the event,” Albert wrote.
      “I just wasn’t meant to be a race-car driver,” Martha reportedly said after the attempt.

      Nascar officials also released a statement grieving the loss.
      “We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Martha Earnhardt,” the Nascar statement read.
      “Martha was not only the matriarch of a legendary Nascar family, but a beloved and respected figure within our industry and throughout the fanbase.
      “We will dearly miss her grace, compassion and welcoming demeanor.”
      Dale Earnhardt Sr was known as one of the best Nascar drivers of all time, winning a total of 76 Winston Cup races and seven Winston Cup championships.
      During the Daytona 500 in February 2001, Earnhardt Sr died in a three-car crash during the final lap of the race.
      Dale Earnhardt Jr, now semi-retired, was nicknamed the “Pied Piper of Daytona.”
      He won the Daytona 500 in 2004 and 2014 and totaled 26 wins in the Cup Series.

      LEWIS HAMILTON missed out on a record eighth F1 world title by the barest of margins this year, and could face an even tougher challenge for the gong next season. Max Verstappen won the title at Yas Marina in controversial circumstances earlier this month, and the Dutchman will be desperate to defend his title in 2022.

      There are rumours that Hamilton could RETIRE after this year’s thrilling title race, although he is expected to take to the grid once again when the season starts in March.
      Verstappen is sure to challenge him for the crown again, but new technical regulations that come into force in 2022 could also make for a wide-open title race.

      Max Verstappen
      The Red Bull flyer is sure to give it his all to defend his maiden title.
      The 24-year-old has stacks of ability behind the wheel and will likely be Hamilton’s biggest challenge next year.

      The 23-year-old Brit is moving to Mercedes from Williams next season to replace the departing Valteri Bottas.
      Russell will be Hamilton’s team-mate, but in a much faster car he will be able to showcase more of what he can do.

      Whether he will be a title challenger remains to be seen, but he impressed when racing in Hamilton’s place during the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.
      But as Mercedes experienced in the Nico Rosberg and Hamilton days, two drivers competing for the title could do the team more harm than good…
      Charles Leclerc
      The 2022 shake-up will see cars shoot air upwards, rather than behind them.
      That means the drivers are capable of travelling closer together, which in turn leads to closer racing.
      One man who could benefit from that is Ferrari driver Leclerc.
      Ferrari improved from sixth in the constructors standings in 2020 to third in 2021, and a further upwards trajectory could see Leclerc improve again.

      Sergio Perez
      Verstappen’s team-mate at Red Bull, Perez showed moments of brilliance last season, finishing fourth in the driver standings.
      The 31-year-old Mexican driver is the perfect partner to Verstappen, and valiantly held up Hamilton behind him in Abu Dhabi to help Verstappen ultimately take the chequered flag.
      His title credentials remain questionable, but he’s certainly got the car to trouble Hamilton next season on multiple occasions.

      And on Thursday they offered a sneak peek into their new car – the W13.
      In an exciting announcement video on Twitter Mercedes wrote: “A new era of F1 starts right here…

      Lambiase is the engineer in charge of all pit-to-car communication with Verstappen on his earpiece during the races – and has become famous for his no-nonsense approach to radio messages.
      Lambiase has been Verstappen’s engineer for every single one of his 118 starts at Red Bull.
      The two were paired together after Verstappen replaced Danill Kvyat at Red Bull ahead of the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.
      Verstappen, famously, would go onto win that race on his Red Bull debut, aged just 18.
      Lambiase, who has joint British and Italian nationality, started his F1 career in 2005 with Jordan and worked with the team for 10 years through several name changes.
      In 2015, Lambiase moved to the Red Bull team, succeeding newly promoted Guillaume Rocquelin.

      “And we can say to each other when we do a bad job. I like that.
      “And he’s also a guy who doesn’t talk too much. So short, quick communication is for me the best and, over the years, you get to know each other as well. 
      “You spend a lot of time with each other. Sometimes I think he can just guess already what I was going to say.”
      The pair have formed a strong relationship which has grown on and off the track.
      And that bond helped the 24-year-old star win the title after he beat Hamilton on the final lap of the campaign.
      Red Bull boss Christian Horner is well aware how important Lambiase is to Verstappen.
      He said: “I think that Gianpiero and Max, the dynamic between the two of them, sometimes you wonder who is the engineer and who is the driver – it’s confusing to work out which one’s which.
      “They know each other so well. GP [Gianpiero] does a great job of handling Max on the track and the way he engineers the car, and that relationship is crucial, because it’s the key interface between the driver and his team.” More
