Verstappen would be handed the latest of lifelines in the form of the safety car, however.
Former race director Michael Masi, since sacked for his blunder, then ordered Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel to unlap themselves behind the safety car – leaving Hamilton at his Red Bull rival’s mercy.
In a new documentary for streaming service Viaplay, Verstappen has revealed what he was thinking during the race’s closing stages.
He said: “At that moment I tried to close the gap.
“I knew I wouldn’t close an eleven-second gap in five laps, but I said to myself, ‘I’m not going to give up now and drive slowly to the finish line. I’m going to give it my all to make it not look easy’.
“I wasn’t really happy at that moment.”

Having seen Nicholas Latifi’s crashed car first hand, Verstappen realised he may have a slim chance after all.
He added: “I was hoping for a restart. That car was at a tricky angle to get out of there.”
Having nipped in for fresh tyres, Verstappen felt the nerves of his team, revealing: “They were very quiet (over the radio).
“They were I think also very nervous for the last lap.”
On old tyres Hamilton was a sitting duck, with Verstappen blitzing past him to seal his first world championship triumph.
The pair will do battle once again later this month, when the new F1 season gets underway in Bahrain.
And fans have been getting pumped, after the first trailer for the new season of the hit series Drive to Survive dropped yesterday.

Danny Ongais dead at 79: Tributes paid to F1 and Indy 500 racer known as the ‘Flyin’ Hawaiian’

THE racing world is mourning the passing of American star Danny Ongais who has died at the age of 79.Known as the ‘Flyin’ Hawaiian’, Ongais’ long career saw him excel in Indy cars, F1 and drag racing.

Born in Kahului in 1942, the racing star started a long journey that would ultimately lead him to the most famous circuits in the world.
Following a spell in the US Army, he returned to his native Hawaii and became the state’s 1960 motorcycle champion.
That success would see him migrate from bikes to cars, kickstarting a phenomenal career that lasted more than five decades.
Ongais could seemingly turn his hand to any discipline and made eleven starts in the iconic Indy 500.
He made a foray into the world of F1 in 1977, racing for Interscope and briefly Team Tissot Ensign.
His best racing season came in 1978, where Ongais won five races and eight poles en route to an eighth-place finish in the USAC standings.
And that led to CART in 1979, where he would stay for the next eight years.
In 1981 he cheated death after a horrendous crash in Indianapolis, which left him with multiple leg, arm and internal injuries.
Ongais retired in 1988, but was convinced to return at the age of 54 in 1996 after the tragic death of Scott Brayton in Indy 500 practice.

Putting on a racing masterclass, Ongais guided his car from its starting place of 33rd to an eventual seventh position.
He had one last shot at the famous race in 1998, but failed to qualify in a Team Pelfrey car.
Ongais was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2000 in the Drag Racing category.
Despite his flamboyance on the track, Ongais was notoriously camera-shy and spent much of his later years with his family in California.
He passed away aged 79 at his California home due to congestive heart failure.

The Sun revealed last August how Lewis, 37, and Dominican Republic-born Camila, 28, had grown close.
As well as taking pictures of the inside of his palatial home in Colorado where she was staying, fans of the model spotted her wearing one of Lewis’ plaid shirts in an Instagram photo.

Mercedes and Red Bull were under considerable amounts of pressure
Race director Michael Masi let a number of lapped cars between Verstappen and seven-time champion Hamilton overtake the safety car following Nicholas Latifi’s crash.
The decision set up a grand stand finish on the final lap and Verstappen, who had fresh tyres, won the sprint to the title.
Masi has since been sacked by the FIA following an investigation.
And after last season’s drama, Drive to Survive is one of the most highly anticipated shows set to drop a new season on Netflix this year.
The trailer focusses on Hamilton and Verstappen’s epic battle and their clashes at Monza, Silverstone and the season finale.
    Hamilton said: “It’s constant warfare.”

George Russell replaced Finn Valtteri Bottas to complete an all-Brit Mercedes line-up.
And Hamilton is hoping there are some ‘non-biased stewards’ this year.

I quit motorsport to become a porn star and I am living my dream life, says driver turned OnlyFans model Renee Gracie

But in 2019, she made a decision that would change her life forever. She boldly chose to ditch racing cars for raising pulses with a career in porn.
Aided by a risque OnlyFans site, she now makes a comfortable six-figure salary monthly sharing explicit adult material online.
It has allowed Gracie to live the dream lifestyle she has always wanted – owning a home with a pool, fast cars, and lavish holidays.
That all has come at a cost, with motorsport organisations now cutting her off from the sport she loves because of her racy profile online.

But, it was the pressures of competing in the V8 Supercars Championship in her native Australia that killed her passion and prompted a job change.
“Motorsport is tough, I fought for years to raise money, and get results,” Renee told SunSport.
“It’s hard to perform when you’re not raising enough money for a spot in the top team.
“On top of all of this – training, eating well, being continuous with how I looked and performed.
“I constantly had to prove myself being a female. I had to deal with negative comments, a lot more than what the boys got.
“Being in a male-dominated sport, and a negative environment most of the time, unfortunately I got to the stage where I lost my passion.
“And I wanted out. My mental state was shot, I was depressed, sad and hated where I was.”

Frustrated working in a male environment and hitting a brick wall financially, the Brisbane beauty quit racing, which she calls “the best decision I have made.”
She set up an OnlyFans account three years ago, and saw her bank account swell. It was justification for her gamble, and improved her own well-being.

“I love OnlyFans, the concept and how it changed my life,” she said.
“Not because of my success on OnlyFans. But I’m happy, healthy and every day I choose to surround myself with people who bring me up and don’t put me down for my weight, looks or results that weekend.
“The OnlyFans success is just further proof of how much I didn’t like the environment I was in. And now that I’m doing something I love, I’ve tried and become successful.”
Renee has since launched her own VIP website, complete with pornographic material, including 18+ videos where punters pay a £5 fee to join, then around £3 monthly after the first month.
While she has also expanded her social media profile, with thriving Instagram, TikTok, and Twitch accounts, as well as a podcast on Spotify where she openly discusses her life as an adult content creator.
“I’m happy, I love myself and my life. It’s so much more than porn,” she told SunSport.
“It’s where it put me and changed my life forever. That’s what makes it okay.
“My life doesn’t revolve around porn and sex. I’m a normal girl, I have dreams, goals and passions.
“What I do is legal, I pay taxes, I don’t hurt anyone. What I do for work every adult does.
“I just choose to share it and make money from it. It doesn’t make me overly different to any other girl my age.”

    She’s in the money
Past reports have suggested Renee is now a millionaire thanks to her sexploits, with some estimating she makes £14,000-per-week.
“I’ll never give away how much money I’ve earned”, she said.
“But I’ve sat comfortably making six figures a month since June 2020.”
Her riches have allowed her to live a glam life many her age would surely envy.
Not only is she a property owner two times over, she has a garage filled with fancy cars.
She is currently building a massive swimming pool for her lavish digs too.
She revealed: “I would say my houses (are my most expensive purchase).

“I have an investment property I bought pretty much straight away within the first six months of leaving motorsport.
“I paid $333,000 (£178,000) for it. And then my current house I live in cost me around $1.33million (£700,000).
“My cars, I paid my Mustang off. I financed it when I didn’t have money. So that got paid off with about $40,000 (£21,000).
“I bought a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT for around $320,000 (£171,000) and my Dodge Ram was about $170,000 (£90,000).
“My newest investment has been my pool, which is expected to cost around $180,000 (£96,000) once finished. And there’s been lots of lavish holidays.”
A future in motorsport, though, is unclear.
“The door has already been closed on this. I’ve been told no from a lot of categories that I can’t join because of who I am and what I do.
“In Australia racing is extremely tight and runs on very old rules.

“There are no people of colour, there are no females. I know first hand how they treat women too. There are no openly gay drivers.
“This is all because of the people and the environment. So to get shut down wasn’t a shock.
“If anything it raised some questions into how the sport runs and operates which could be beneficial for others moving forward.” More

Russell and Norris fear overtaking in F1 could be HARDER this season despite huge rule changes in bid to improve racing

BRITISH F1 duo George Russell and Lando Norris have both voiced concerns that overtaking may have become more difficult for the upcoming campaign. F1 chiefs implemented a host of new rules for the 2022 season that were designed to make races more exciting.

The shake-up included tweaks to allow cars to follow each other more closely, which would in theory result in more overtakes.
But while Mercedes new boy Russell and McLaren man Norris reported that following was indeed better, they didn’t have much luck overtaking.
Russell revealed that he had difficulty trying to get past Norris during pre-season testing in Barcelona.
He admitted to reporters: “I think following has been improved but the slipstream effect has been reduced quite substantially, so I don’t really know.”
He continued: “We can follow closer but from what we have seen, the slipstream effect is definitely less effective. We will have to wait and see.
“I got right up behind Lando, I was a car’s length or two behind him and didn’t catch the straight so that was slightly concerning. Let’s see.”

Norris too was quick to back up Russell, as he admitted he purposely held up Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate in order to see if he could pass him.
He said: “Me and George had a perfect demonstration of it.
“I didn’t want to let him past while he was on a quick lap, so I screwed him over and held him up a bit. That’s what you do in testing.”
He added: “We can follow closer but then the slipstream is worse, so a positive and a negative from it. We don’t know which is the bigger effect at the minute, so we will have to see until the first race.”

🏁 F1 2022 calendar: practice times, dates and racetrack info
Norris had topped the timesheets after the first of three days testing in Barcelona.
Meanwhile Russell admitted Mercedes were ‘not fully happy’ with the car in Spain, with plenty of work to do before the start of the campaign.
More testing will be held in Bahrain from March 10-12, where drivers will have the chance to get to grips with their new vehicles again.
Both though admitted nobody will know exactly how hard overtaking will be until lights out in the F1 2022 season opener, also in Bahrain, on March 20. More

Lewis Hamilton, 37, can’t drive ‘at this level for much longer’ and Verstappen ‘will get stronger’ claims Red Bull chief

RED BELL chief Helmut Marko has claimed Max Verstappen ‘will get stronger’, while Lewis Hamilton’s days at the top are numbered. Seven-time World Champion Hamilton, 37, made his F1 debut when Verstappen was just TEN.

After months of speculation regarding his future, Hamilton confirmed he would be returning to the grid for the 2022 F1 calendar.
The 24-year-old Verstappen is the reigning world champion though.
And Marko reckons Hamilton might not have what it takes to maintain his sky-high standards for much longer.
He told Austrian outlet OE24: “Hamilton delivered an incredible second half of the season.
“I can hardly imagine he can drive at this level for much longer. He’s at his zenith now, age is slowly coming into play.”
Then when talking about Verstappen, Marko said: “He’s World Champion now and he will get stronger.”

But it was Hamilton who set the fastest lap-time during pre-season testing in Barcelona.
The Spanish city offered a first chance for the ten F1 teams to try out their cars for the upcoming season.
Officially billed as a ‘shakedown’, the three days in Barcelona were not labelled as testing.
Instead that is scheduled for Bahrain next month, before the campaign kicks off on March 20 in the same location.
Hamilton will be desperate to wrestle the title back off Verstappen after the flying Dutchman snatched it from him in controversial circumstances last year. More
