DANIEL RICCIARDO made a “spectacularly bad” call leaving Red Bull for Renault ahead of the 2019 Formula 1 season, claims Christian Horner.The Aussie left Red Bull after five seasons, despite being offered “stratospheric” sums to stay.

Things didn’t work out as he’d hoped with Renault, with Ricciardo jumping ship again for McLaren ahead of last season.
Reflecting on Ricciardo’s decision while speaking to The Weekend Australian, Horner said: “Daniel could see Max (Verstappen) in the ascendancy and he didn’t want to become the second driver.”
Red Bull switched to a Honda engine for the 2019 season, with Ricciardo having doubts over how competitive it’d be – gambling that he’d have a better chance of success in the Renault.
Horner, 48, continued: “His timing was spectacularly bad because obviously, he had doubts about the Honda engine and then (Honda) went on to prove there it was a competitive power unit and a race-winning package.

Ricciardo has endured a horrendous start to the season – coming 14th in Bahrain before failing to finish in Saudi Arabia.
He has also seen his team-mate Lando Norris pen a new four-year contract worth £20million-per-season – nearly double what Ricciardo takes home per year.
The veteran is under contract with McLaren until 2023.

And he was forced to sit out of the second race in Saudi Arabia a week later, too, because he failed to return a negative result.
But now his F1 team Aston Martin have confirmed Vettel has got the green light to race at the Australian Grand Prix on April 10.
They tweeted: “TEAM UPDATE: We are pleased to confirm that Sebastian Vettel is now fit to race and will therefore line up alongside @lance_stroll in Melbourne to kick off his 2022 @F1 season at the @ausgrandprix.”

And Red Bull, with whom Vettel won his four drivers’ titles, added: “Good to have you back, Seb. See you on track in Melbourne.”
In Vettel’s absence, he has been replaced by fellow 34-year-old German and Aston Martin’s reserve driver Nico Hulkenberg.
However, Hulkenberg and Lance Stroll have struggled so far this season, both finishing outside of the points in the two races in the Middle East.

In 1981, F1 bosses introduced a race to Sin City – and by 1982, it was gone.
It’s now been confirmed Las Vegas will return to the calendar from 2023.
But this time, it’s being done properly, including an incredible sprint up the iconic Strip.
It’s a far cry from the disastrous attempts of the 1980s.

Let’s face it, holding an F1 race in the CAR PARK of the Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino was never going to be a hit.
It was an embarrassing track – just 2.3miles long – that was dull, repetitive and heavily criticised.
Not to mention the extreme heat – with the mercury touching 37 degrees.
When Nelson Piquet clinched the first of his three World Championship titles by finishing fifth in 1981, it took him 15 minutes to recover from heat exhaustion.

The Brazilian barely made the finish line, while other racers complained about the severe strain on their necks due to the anti-clockwise circuit.
Needless to say, it was wildly unpopular with the drivers.
Mechanics hated it, too. With no garages, cars were left out in the open, with the pitlane desperately, dangerously narrow.
Fans clearly didn’t love it either, with attendance figures utterly woeful.
After just two races, the Caesars Palace Grand Prix was scrapped following 1982 edition.
It was the first time a country had held three F1 rounds in the same season as the sport struggled to crack the American market.
It was the final race of the season and won by Michele Alboreto, driving a Tyrrell-Ford.
Keke Rosberg’s sixth place finish in Vegas was enough to win him the drivers’ championship title from McLaren’s John Watson.
A year earlier, in the race’s debut, Alan Jones won in his Williams-Ford.
So what about the new and improved Las Vegas Grand Prix?
The new and improved Las Vegas GP will go through the streets and down the famous Strip
The race will be held at night on a Saturday – rather than a Sunday – and is likely to be given a slot on November 25, just two days after Thanksgiving.
The track will see racers whiz along The Las Vegas Strip, past hotels and casinos in what promises to be one of the most iconic settings on the calendar.
The track design is 3.8 miles long from start to finish with top speeds estimated to be over 212 mph.
The race will consists of 50 laps, with three main straights and 14 corners, including a high-speed cornering sequence and a single chicane section.
With the race in November, the weather will be much cooler too – around 20C at most, rather than pushing 40C.
All in all, it sounds considerably better.. for everyone involved! More

According to talkSPORT, the F1 will bag a 10-figure sum for bringing the race to Vegas.
And it could be held in November to coincide with Thanksgiving weekend.
Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton is buzzing to head to Vegas – a city the sport has not been to since the 1980s.
He said: “It’s a real party city. It’s really difficult for a racing driver – how am I going to focus that weekend? There’s going to be so much going on.”

While AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly asked about whether they were actually going to race on the Strip, querying: “Are we going to take that main [road]?”
When he was told they would be, the Frenchman then added: “No. That’s going to be insane! Wow.”
Mick Schumacher also reacted to the news in an exuberant manner, saying: “That’s crazy. I think we’ll find a few drivers in the casinos then – me being one of them.”

The race will be held at night on a Saturday – rather than a Sunday.
The track will see F1 cars race along The Las Vegas Strip, past hotels and casinos in what promises to be one of the most iconic settings on the calendar.
The track design is 3.8 miles long from start to finish with top speeds estimated to be over 212 mph.
There will be 50 race laps with three main straights and 14 corners, including a high-speed cornering sequence and a single chicane section.

After a difficult start to the season, which included a 10th place finish in Saudi Arabia last weekend, Hamilton has opened up on his mental struggles.
But the Brit admitted he has been suffering “for a long time”.
The seven-time world champion wrote on his Instagram story: “It has been such a tough year already with everything that is happening around us. Hard some days to stay positive.
“I have struggled mentally and emotionally for a long time, to keep going is a constant effort but we have to keep fighting. We have so much to do and to achieve.”
