An estimated total of 420,000 fans walked through the gates of Melbourne Park between Thursday and Sunday to watch the Australian Grand Prix – making it the biggest sporting event ever staged in Melbourne.
Most of those fans were there in support of Daniel Ricciardo, who finished sixth in the race behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris.
And to honour the 32-year-old’s return to Oz, a group were filmed doing his signature celebration – the ‘shoey’.
Sky Sports F1 pundit Kravitz got involved in the festivities, and was happy to take a sip from one enthusiastic fan’s shoe.

Lewis Hamilton is best F1 driver of all time and before Schumacher and Senna because he is a ‘clean’ racer, Walker said

THE LATE Murray Walker said Lewis Hamilton is a better driver than Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna – because he’s a “clean” racer. The legendary commentator, who passed away last month, watched hundreds of F1 drivers across eight decades.

But Walker revealed last year that the current world champion is the cream of the crop because he has never used dirty tactics to win races.
Both Schumacher and Senna had contentious moments during their careers, but Walker claimed Hamilton is as “clean as a whistle”.
He said: “Well, people say to me, ‘Who is the greatest?’, and I always say, ‘Look, I think it’s impossible to say, because the drivers and the circuits and the cars were different’.
“Juan Manel Fangio took a lot of beating, Jim Clark, Sir Jackie Stewart — there again I could go on — but which is the best I really don’t know.
“I used to say Fangio. I think I’m going to have to say very shortly Lewis Hamilton, because if you look at it in terms of statistics, he’s already got more poles than Schumacher.
“He’s got at least three years in him if he doesn’t hurt himself or leave Mercedes for some reason or they decide to stop, in which case he’s got at least another three championships ahead of him, so statistically he will become the greatest.
“But he’s also in my opinion — and this is very contentious indeed — better than either Schumacher or Senna because both of them, Schumacher and Senna, adopted at various times in their career highly debatable driving tactics.
“Like Schumacher stopping deliberately at Monaco to prevent Fernando Alonso getting pole position, like Schumacher colliding with Jacques Villeneuve at Jerez in 1997, like Senna with Alain Prost in 1990 in Japan, and Lewis Hamilton has never been anything like that.

The ten greatest F1 drivers of all-time – according to SunSport’s motorsport correspondent Ben Hunt
“He’s always driven as clean as a whistle. He’s an extremely nice, gigantically talented driver, and I don’t think we’ve ever seen anybody like him before.”
Formula One celebrate its 70th anniversary at Silverstone last season.
But while Hamilton has dominated for much of the last decade, Walker says the sport’s best era was in the 1970s and 1980s but believes it is still just as exciting.
Speaking to In the Fast Lane, the official podcast of the Australian Grand Prix, Walker added: “A lot of it is looking backwards through rose-coloured glasses.
“It’s still mighty exciting when you take into account what a contest it is with man and machine.
“But I have to admit that for me the 70s and 80s were the most exciting time — but then I was very much more involved with it at the time because I was literally a part of it and having to communicate to the public worldwide what was going on.
“It was very exciting times, when people like Jackie Stewart were driving, and we got the most incredible races at Silverstone, with Nigel Mansell beating Nelson Piquet, for instance, and various others.
“You have to bear in mind that I’m an old codger. I was actually at the first grand prix they held at Silverstone in 1948 — and that was before Formula One even began.

CHARLES LECLERC was crowned champion of Australia when he cruised to a Grand Prix victory in Melbourne on Sunday. The Ferrari driver secured the fastest lap on the final lap alongside leading for the entire race.
Whilst his nearest rival, Max Verstappen was forced to retire having burnt out on lap 39.
As for Lewis Hamilton, the British icon disappointingly missed out on the podium altogether with Sergio Perez and teammate George Russell finishing ahead of him.

    Pushed it to the max
Charles Leclerc’ arch rival was forced to retire from the Australian Grand Prix due to a fuel problem.
The Red Bull racer was going strong in second place when an issue with his engine caused him to stop in lap 39.
There appeared to be an issue with either his hydraulic fluid or engine oil and the Dutchaman was not happy in the slightest.
During the event, Verstappen said: “I smell some weird fluid. Everything is s******* itself.”
And after the race, the F1 icon stated: ”
We are already miles behind so I don’t even want to think about the championship at the moment – it’s more important to finish races.
“Today in general it was a bad day, not really having the pace and having to manage my tyres.
“It looked like quite an easy P2 and I knew I could not reach Charles (Leclerc) so there was no point trying to put pressure on him.
“Not even being able to finish the race is frustrating and unacceptable.”
Verstappen added: “I knew there was a problem, there was always going to be a question mark of finishing the race. These kinds of things if you want to win the championship cannot happen.
“I don’t know (what the issue was). They have. to get the car back to the factory to investigate.”
Perez is second and Russell completes the podium
Great stuff from Russell, who comes home ahead of his unhappy teammate.
Russell says: “We’ve got to be in it to win it and capitalise on others’ misfortune and obviously we got a little bit lucky today twice, but we’ll take it.”
Great to see McLaren scoring big points, too.
    Leclerc wins the Australian GP
That was an easy one for the Ferrari man, who had the added boost of seeing his nearest rival retire from the race.
That was pole position, victory, fastest lap on the last lap, and all laps led for Leclerc. Dominant.

    Lap 58 Albon pits
The first stop of the race for the Williams man on the final lap. It means he finishes 10th and scores a point.
He started last and made an excellent recovery. Driver of the Day.
    Hamilton critical of his team
Just the way the cookie crumbles? Hamilton is not happy being behind Russell.
Tells his team: “You guys have put me in a really hard position”
    A word on Albon
He is in seventh place in his Williams. That is an excellent effort. Still yet to pit for tyres though.

    Lap 46
Leclerc is leading and has the fastest lap.
Perez in P2, Russell in P3, Hamilton in P4. Norris in P5 and Ricciardo in P6.

    Penalty for Stroll
The hapless Aston Martin driver is penalised with a five second time penalty for weaving on the straight.
He also bumped Bottas off track just moments ago.

That clearly caught Red Bull out
There was no sign of any problems and will be a huge concern to the team.
A double failure in Bahrain and now another one in Melbourne. And without the pace of Ferrari.

Lap 39 Verstappen’s Red Bull goes up in smoke
Big drama as his title defence is off to a shaky start.
He is told to pull over and stop the car and his car has caught fire.
Wow. That is his second retirement of the season in only the third race of the campaign.

Lap 37 Perez gets past Russell
The Mexican is back in the podium places as Russell, who had lucked in on the pitstop under the safety car.
Russell is in fourth and Hamilton is fifth.
    Leclerc is unchallenged

    Lap 34
Norris gets past Magnussen and in to seventh place. It has been a much-improved weekend for McLaren so far. Ricciardo is in ninth.
Alonso now dropping out of the mix
The Spaniard had not pitted to form a cork in the bottle. But he is now out of the way down in sixth place.

    Halfway stage of the race
It is Leclerc, Verstappen +2.470, Russell +3.829.
We have lost Sainz and Vettel from this GP.
    Lap 27 Safety Car In
    We are racing again…
Leclerc comes under attack from Verstappen.
And Russell is also in the mix behind the Red Bull.
Thrilling stuff, but the order remains the same.

    Russell has pitted too
He did so behind the safety car and that has allowed him to get past Hamilton. He is running in third place.
    It is Leclerc, Verstappen, Russell…
Lap 23 Vettel is out – Safety Car deployed
The Aston Martin man has come to a stop after smashing into the barriers at turn four.
That’s a bad mistake from the German, who has had a miserable week. He was fined for using a scooter on track, he was also fined for speeding in the pitlane.
He is now out of this race and that mess will take some time to clear up.

Lap 22 The race leader pits
Leclerc is in for fresh tyres, as is Hamilton. Leclerc still leads and Hamilton remains ahead of Perez.
Lap 21 Perez and Norris stop
Two quick stops and Perez is in 9th and Norris in 12th.
Lap 19 Verstappen is in the pits
He is coming in for fresh tyres. A stop of 2.9 seconds and he has gone for the hard tyres.
He was in second place and returns to the track in seventh place.
Close calls for both Haas drivers
Mick Schumacher AND Kevin Magnussen both go off track a different points, as Haas seem to be struggling with their set up.

    Problem for Verstappen
The Red Bull man is struggling on those tyres. He has just had a lock up and complaining over the radio that he needs to pit.
This was supposed to be a one-stop strategy, but he may need more than that.
Meanwhile, Leclerc is pulling away in P1. He has a five second lead now.

Lap 10 Perez gets past Hamilton
The Mexican, who lost position at the start, has now managed to squeeze past the Brit at the first attempt.
He had the benefit of DRS to get the move done, but he is now 6.4 seconds off the race leader.
    Leclerc holds the lead
But the Red Bull of Verstappen is very close behind and looks to have the quicker car.

Two safety cars could not disrupt his flow, nor could Max Verstappen’s shock abandonment in lap 39.
Verstappen had trailed Leclerc throughout in second place but a problem with his engine forced his retirement.
That pushed team-mate into Sergio Perez into second place with Mercedes pair benefitting also – George Russell taking a podium place with Lewis Hamilton fourth.

Elsewhere, Ferrari’s day of joy did have a sour note – Carlos Sainz crashed out in lap two.
The Spaniard had a nightmare weekend after qualifying ninth on the grid after a red flag prevented him from recording a faster time.
Sainz slipped into 14th inside the first few corners and in battling to regain position he lost control and veered off track before ending up in the dirt.
Leclerc said after his win: “It’s the first one where we controlled the gap – what a car today.
It was a day of celebration for Ferrari despite Carlos Sainz’s retirementCredit: AFP
“The race pace we were extremely strong, we managed the tyres extremely well. I’m just so happy. Incredible to win here.
“We are only at the third race so it’s difficult to think about the championship but to be honest we have a very strong car, a very reliable car.
“For now we have always been there so. I hope it continues like this and if it does then we probably have a chance for the championship which makes me smile after the last two years.”
After claiming his first podium of the season Russell said: “We’ve got to be in it to win it and capitalise from others’ misfortune.
“To be standing on the podium is special.

Max Verstappen forced to retire in lap 39 of the Australian Grand Prix after identifying a problem with his fuel

There appeared to be an issue with his fuel or hydraulic fluid as Verstappen was forced to retire for the second race this season.
The Dutchman said immediately after stopping: “I smell some weird fluid. Everything is s******* itself.”
Fluid was reportedly leaking and Verstappen put safety first by pulling over to the side of the track to end his race.
Team-mate Sergio Perez had no such problem and when he enquired about Verstappen’s car his team told him to focus on his own car.

wins in Australian GP as Verstappen retirement hands Russell third
After the race Verstappen said: ” We are already miles behind so I don’t even want to think about the championship at the moment – it’s more important to finish races.
“Today in general it was a bad day, not really having the pace and having to manage my tyres.
“It looked like quite an easy P2 and I knew I could not reach Charles (Leclerc) so there was no point trying to put pressure on him.
“Not even being able to finish the race is frustrating and unacceptable.

“I knew there was a problem, there was always going to be a question mark of finishing the race. These kinds of things if you want to win the championship cannot happen.
“I don’t know (what the issue was). They have. to get the car back to the factory to investigate.”
Red Bull chief Christian Horner said: “It’s totally understandable his frustration – that was a really disappointing result not to finish the race.
“We don’t know what the issue was yet, I don’t think it’s actually engine related, I think it might be a fuel issue but we need to get the car back to look at exactly what’s happened.
“Desperately frustrating, as Max said we didn’t have the pace to race, Leclerc was in a league of his own but frustrating not to be bagging those points.”
Fortunately for Red Bull, they avoided a repeat of the Bahrain grand prix when Verstappen’s withdrawal was followed by Perez being forced to retire too.

    Lew’s mask moan
Lewis Hamilton was ‘uncomfortable’ at FIA officials not wearing masks at the drivers’ briefing ahead of the Australian GP.
Race chiefs used the meeting to underline a crackdown on jewellery and insist on fireproof underwear during tomorrow’s race.
But Hamilton doubted whether such talks were necessary.
And although face coverings aren’t compulsory in enclosed areas in Australia, the Brit pointed out: “No one in the drivers’ briefing were wearing masks.
“Some of the drivers were but most of the FIA were not, which for me was uncomfortable.”
The seven-time world champ added: “It was the longest drivers’ briefing of my life.
“I don’t understand the small things they are picking up on, like the underwear – are we really talking about that kind of thing?”

    Coulthard on Hamilton’s future
“What’s happened with Lewis and Mercedes might be slightly de-motivating,” he said.
“I expect him to do what he has done for many years – get the feedback on his car and be the voice of it. The workload is the same whether you are winning or losing.
“What is different is the frustration because you don’t have a winning car. But I was massively impressed that he committed himself into signing a two-year contract – despite the uncertainty surrounding the new regulations.
“That told me he had a hunger and a focus. It only takes a bad run and a bit of frustration for a driver’s motivation to tail off.
“Now, he had a similar situation at McLaren when he was younger. But that was then.
“This is now when he’s older, more experienced and has seven world championships under his belt. I don’t think older sportsmen and women lose their talent.
“What I think they lose is the need. There is a certain point in your life where you need it. Lewis has had a brilliant period of success. The question is for him: ‘Am I prepared to go through the motions this season, or am I actually going to consider my future?’
“This will show to any of the doubters his absolute underlying commitment.”

    Alonso pole bid woe
Fernando Alonso reckons he could have taken polefor Alpine today were it not for a hydraulic failure.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took top spot ahead of tomorrow’s Australian GP ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Alonso sparked a red flag when he ran wide of the apex as he neared the corner, took the kerb and rolled into gravel and then the wall.
The comeback star: “We lost the hydraulics on the car, so we lost the gear change and power steering and everything.
“I think we could fight for pole position today.
“Been waiting many years for that possibility and it is amazing we have been so unlucky in these first three races.
“I was doing one of the best weekends in years and it is very frustrating now.”
Mercedes chief admits problems could last until final race
Toto Wolff says Mercedes’ pace problems could last until the final race of the season.
The team boss also admitted their cars’ problems are wide-ranging.
Wolff said: “Our bouncing is worse in the sense that we are carrying it into the corners, into the high speeds so we see where we are losing the performance.
“On sector one, we are very competitive when you look at the overlay, and sector two we are competitive. Sector three, through Nine and 10 we are losing all our margins, almost a second through a couple of corners.
“Is curing the bouncing the miraculous unlocking of a second? No, for sure not. But there are many other little improvements we can make on weight.
“I’m optimistic we are going to get there eventually. Whether it is is in two races or five or by the end of the season, I don’t know.”
Hamilton ‘doesn’t enjoy’ driving his new Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton admits driving his struggling new Mercedes has taken away his driving enjoyment.
The seven-time world champ qualified fifth for the Australian GP, helped by problems for Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso.
But he was a second past Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc.
The Brit revealed his Mercedes fast-bouncing at high speeds – ‘porpoising’ – was ‘really the worst characteristic I have experienced in a car and we can’t get rid of it at the moment’.
Hamilton added: “We’re a second off, a pretty huge gap.
“I enjoy the role of working with the team. I don’t enjoy driving the car but I enjoy the collaboration of working with the guys, knowing that there is a steep hill to climb and just remaining hopeful.”

    Merc my words
Somewhat of a comeback for Mercedes in Australia.
Lewis Hamilton will be 5th on the grid tomorrow after qualifying.
The seven-time champion will be in with a real shot if the car gives him what he needs.
    George Russell qualified 6th.

    One step closer for Verstappen
Max Verstappen gives his view after finishing second in qualifying.
He will start behind LeClerc on the grid tomorrow in Melbourne.
The 24-year-old said: “For me this weekend so far has been all over the place, I’m happy to be second, but as a team we want more.”

    LeClerc happy on top
Charles LeClerc spoke after making pole for tomorrow’s race.
The Ferrari ace said: “The free practice sessions were quite messy for me, but in Q3 I managed to put everything together, so it feels great.
“I’m very happy to be on pole tomorrow!”

    Dennis continued
Dennis said: “In 2020, I basically lived at the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes. I was there all the time.
“I didn’t really have too much racing going on myself and they needed a driver who had a bit of F1 experience.
“This year has been pretty hectic already. I think with a new car it just puts more demand on the workload.
“So there’s been quite a lot of simulator work and that will continue on throughout the year.”
    Exclusive by Ben Hunt
Max Verstappen’s bid to defend his F1 crown is being boosted by British racer Jake Dennis.
The 26-year-old from Nuneaton is Red Bull’s development driver and he also races in Formula E for the Andretti team.
Dennis is a versatile driver and spends HOURS in Red Bull’s simulator to help fine-tune Verstappen’s race car.
While he is also out to win the Formula E title himself this season after finishing third in the championship last year in his rookie season.
Dennis, who will race in the Rome ePrix today, says he enjoys balancing his own racing commitments with working for Red Bull.
    Leclerc takes pole
Sensational lap from the Ferrari man to start P1.
Verstappen is second in his Red Bull, Perez in P3.
And what about this! Lando Norris in fourth. A great recovery from him.
Hamilton qualifies in fifth, Russell in sixth.
Phew, all poised for an exciting battle tomorrow.

Russell, from nowhere, pops up in P4
Great lap from the Mercedes man while Hamilton is struggling.
    Q3 is go again
Six minutes to go and it is Leclerc, Perez, Verstappen.
Things just are not clicking for Alonso
He has been at Alpine for a while now and spoke about ‘El Plan’ when he rejoined F1.
It has been more pain than a plan. He trudges back to the garage as the session is delayed again.
Almost seven minutes left on the clock.

Red flag – Crash for Alonso
The two-time world champion has lost control and slams into the barriers. He is out of the car and out of this qualifying.

    Q3 is go
Shoot-out for the top 10 is underway in Oz. Verstappen v Leclerc, or can someone else spring a surprise?
    Blinded by the sun

Bottas’s run comes to an end
The first time since 2016 the Finn has not reached Q3.

    Out in Q2
Gasly, Bottas, Tsunoda, Zhou and Schumacher are eliminated. Both McLarens are in to Q3. That’s a good upturn for the Woking team.
    Tsunoda runs into the gravel…
And Lewis Hamilton is having difficulty staying on track.
Meanwhile, Leclerc has asked for a new helmet with a dark visor, as the low sun is making it difficult to see. He says it is dangerous.
    Another fine for Vettel.
Yesterday it was €5,000 for riding a scooter on the track after his car broke down.
Today it is €600 for breaking the speed limit in the pit lane. He was clocked at 85.1km/h, a total of 5.1km/h over the regulation speed.
    Hamilton unhappy with Verstappen
The Dutchman was unaware Hamilton was approaching on a flying lap and did not move out of the way.
Hamilton radios his team to complain while Verstappen also radios his team to ask if Hamilton was on a flyer.
It seems he was unaware he was, so bit of a mistake from Red Bull’s pitwall not to warn their driver to move out of the way.

‘Lewis loves doing this’ – Mercedes boss Toto Wolff quashes Hamilton quit talk and insists Brit will go on for YEARS

LEWIS HAMILTON will stay in Formula One for years to come, says his Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Many wondered if the 37-year-old would see out his two-year deal, worth around £80million, after controversially missing out on a record eighth world crown last season.
Hamilton appears set to continue racing following rumours he was set to quick the sportCredit: Getty
But Wolff rubbished suggestions the 37-year-old Brit could throw in the towel and says he has plenty more left in the tank.
Wolff said: “You can only walk away if you don’t like what you do any more but Lewis loves doing this.
“Lewis is in fantastic shape, his lifestyle is hugely disciplined and he has many, many years to go.
“And isn’t it a great challenge for him? He was at McLaren, then went to Mercedes when it wasn’t great and has won six titles. The team has got it wrong now, but he can be a part of the rise again.”

Mercedes have dominated the sport since 2014 enabling Hamilton to become the grid’s most decorated star.
But a new rulebook this season has seen the Silver Arrows struggle to keep pace with Red Bull and Ferrari.
Wolff says he is committed to helping the team make it a three-way title fight, adding: “I don’t sleep, and that is not because of jet lag.
“I am not sleeping because I am beating myself up on how to get on top of these things. It is a miserable state of mind.

“But you cannot be miserable. I have to look for solutions and I am trying to improve myself in order to extract more performance — and it’s the same for Lewis.
“I see an upbeat Lewis when we start the day and then a downbeat Lewis when the session has gone worse than expected. I have had to stop thinking in terms of sessions and weekends, but about years.
“There will be years like this one where we have really bad weekends, but these weekends are necessary to learn.
“Are we going to fight for the world championships? My expectation from a pure mathematical stance is no, we are too slow.
“This needs to be a blip and not a long-term downward spiral. It will be a blip, and that is why we need to get it right now – not on the stopwatch, but mentally.” More
