      F1 French Grand Prix LIVE PRACTICE: Updates as Hamilton looks to claw back points from Verstappen & Leclerc – Stream, TV

      LEWIS HAMILTON will be looking to keep up his pursuit of F1 title rivals Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc this weekend at the French Grand Prix. Verstappen and Leclerc are battling at the top of the standings while Hamilton it yet to win a race at all this season.
      And things are set to hot up further at the Paul Ricard Circuit on Sunday when the trio go bumper-to-bumper once again.

      Halfway in FP2 – Leclerc leads
      It is a Ferrari double as Sainz is in P2. Verstappen in P3. Alonso P4, Vettel P5 and Stroll in P6.
      That’s hugely encouraging for Aston Martin, who have brought some upgrades to this race. Looks like they are working.
      Shall we talk porpoising?
      Yes, it is back. The bouncing up and down of the cars that was not so much of an issue in Canada, Silverstone and Austria, is a problem again in France.
      Some have got it worse than others. Lando Norris was bouncing all about in FP1 and it looked mighty uncomfortable. Same too for Carlos Sainz.
      Less so for Max Verstappen, but it is still occurring. Stiffer planks from Spa and new sensors in place next season to stop it.
      Spin for Schumacher
      The Haas man has been earning some praise recently for his performances in the race, less so for that spin though.
      He’s managed to keep his car out of trouble and apart from ruining his tyres, remains all in good shape.
      Penalties for Sainz
      If you missed it earlier, Sainz will face a 10-place grid drop on Sunday for new components on his Ferrari.
      Remember his car caught fire last out in Austria and Ferrari have taken a new control electronics on his power unit, triggering the penalty.
      Early laps for Alpine
      Alonso and Ocon currently sit at the top of the timesheets ahead of Gasly.

      Leclerc topped FP1
      The Ferrari man was the quickest in the morning session ahead of Max Verstappen while Carlos Sainz was third.
      George Russell was in fourth in his Mercedes but there was no Lewis Hamilton, who was replaced by Nyck De Vries as part of a routine swap to give young drivers some experience – only he’s 27.

      ‘I still want this’ – Daniel Ricciardo slams F1 retirement and McLaren sack rumours and wants to continue career

      DANIEL RICCIARDO has rubbished suggestions he is about to be booted out of McLaren and insists he is staying with the team until the end of 2023.The Aussie has simply not delivered on a regular basis since joining the team from Renault last year.

      And his poor performances earned him some public criticism from McLaren CEO, Zak Brown.
      McLaren have been linked with Sebastian Vettel while they handed an F1 test to IndyCar driver Colton Herta last week in Portugal, but Ricciardo says he’s going nowhere.
      Ricciardo, who defiantly posted this week on social media, said: “It’s a lot of noise, rumours and people questioning, coming up with their own answers and it was building.
      “I know what my future is, so I am just going to let everyone know but also for people that follow me and my supporters.

      Meanwhile, Vettel, who is out of contract at Aston Martin at the end of the year, has been linked to retiring.
      The four-time world champion has been speaking out on F1 and environmental issues leading to other speculation that he will quit when his deal expires.
      The 35-year-old was coy when asked about his future ahead of the French GP and played down the link to McLaren.
      He said: “Lando [Norris] has a contract. It’s just rumours. I think there’s a clear intention to keep going and we’ll see soon where we stand.” More

      MOTORSPORT legend Paddy Hopkirk has died at the age of 89.The British racing icon, most famous for his 1964 Monte Carlo Rally win, has “passed away peacefully” on Thursday, a family statement revealed.

      The husband, father, grandfather and motorsport legend died at at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, leaving his loved ones heartbroken.
      Hopkirk is survived by wife Jenny and three children – Katie, Patrick and William – as well as his six grandchildren.
      A statement released by Hopkirk’s family on Friday read: “First and foremost, Paddy was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
      “His passing will leave a huge hole in the lives of those closest to him.
      “But Paddy also leaves an incredible legacy of motorsport and business success.
      “His hard work in support of the British motorsport and wider car industry continued until his final days.
      “His family, friends and fans will never forget his sharp wit and wicked smile.
      “He brought fun and joy to anyone in his company and inspired many.”

      Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in April 1933, Hopkirk would go on to become one of Britain’s top rally drivers of all time.
      He most-famously stormed to the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally win in his Mini Cooper S.
      But his racing journey begun aged NINE when a local clergyman left him his invalid carriage – predecessors to the modern mobility scooter – in his will.
      He later bought a motorcycle, before his dad insisted he attached a sidecar, believing it was a safer option.
      Despite studying engineering at Trinity College Dublin, Hopkirk would drop out to focus on racing.
      During his days at Trinity, he had bought an Austin 7 “Chummy” Tourer – which he would later race on the rally circuit.
      Hopkirk started working for Dublin’s Volkswagen assembler’s retail operation in Ballsbridge – and used a number of Beetles to kickstart his racing career.
      He bagged his first win in 1953, but would have to wait over a decade for his career-defining win on the French Rivieira – winning a total of 13 international rallies before retiring.
      And in 2010, after an illustrious career, Hopkirk was inducted into the Rally Hall of Fame.
      He was later awarded an MBE in the 2016 New Year’s Honours List.
      Tributes have poured in for Hopkirk following his family’s tragic annoucement.
      The FIA – the governing body for world motorsport – tweeted: “We pay tribute to former Rally driver Paddy Hopkirk, who passed away at the age of 89.
      “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

      What is porpoising in F1 and why is it creating so much controversy?

      F1’s new rules for this season have forced teams to redesign their cars but some are struggling with extreme bouncing called porpoising. Here SunSport looks at the aerodynamic phenomenon, what causes it and how it can be stopped.

      What is porpoising?
      Previously, F1 cars used aerodynamics to push the car downwards into the ground.
      The faster it went, the more air flew over the car’s front and rear wings and as that weight increased, the lower the car went to the ground.
      The problem was that it caused turbulent air behind, so it made it hard for the car behind to get close enough to overtake.
      Think of a speed boat churning up the sea, it makes it difficult for a boat behind sat in choppy water.
      This year, the cars are designed to use their floors to suck it to the ground at high speed, which creates less turbulence and, in theory, more overtaking chances and better racing.

      What causes the porpoising?
      The faster a car goes, the more the suction power of the floor, but of course once the car touches the ground, the airflow under the car stops.
      That stall in flow caused the car to lose that downforce and it springs back up again.
      However, once the gap is made under the car, the downward suction starts again until it touches the floor.
      The stop/start of the suction caused the bouncing we have seen resulting in drivers bouncing up and down, causing them considerable discomfort and pain.
      Can porpoising be stopped?
      How can you stop it?
      The simple answer is to raise up the height of the F1 car. The only problem is, that results in less downforce and that equates to slower lap times.
      Unsurprisingly, that is not an option for the competitive F1 teams who are only focused on making their car go quicker.
      So what has been done?
      F1’s governing body, the FIA have introduced limits to how much porpoising is allowed.
      They have calculated a number based on an equation that is simply too difficult to comprehend – but, there is a limit.
      Other measures that will come into play in the future are raised floor heights at the sides, changes to the diffuser on the floor and sensors to measure how much porpoising is happening – and that it is within the above mentioned limit.
