      F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: George Russell takes POLE, Vetterl OUT in Q1, Perez OUT in Q2

      FORMULA ONE makes a speedy return this weekend as Max Verstappen aims to extend his lead in the Championship title race.However, the Red Bull Racer was forced to watch Charles Leclerc fresh from his horrific crash set the pace in FP2.
      As for Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time champion struggled yet again and finished outside of the top ten at FP3.

      Big moment for Russell
      Like most F1 drivers, George Russell was likely dreaming of his first pole and first win before he had even completed puberty.
      Today he does the former with a brilliant lap, and becomes the 3rd driver this season to claim their first pole (following Perez in Saudi Arabia in March and Sainz at Silverstone at the beginning of this month).
      The result also means Russell is the 105th polesitter in F1 history.

      Dream for Mercedes
      Mercedes hadn’t been on pole all season but they’ve ended that now after a whopping lap from George Russell.
      Given the fact that the Silver Arrows have had good race pace all season, there’s no reason they can’t win the race tomorrow with a bit of luck.
      We could be in for another belting race in Hungary with Sainz and Leclerc directly behind Russell, Norris in 4th, Hamilton in 7th behind both Alpines and the two Red Bulls – including Championship leader Max Verstappen – needing to hustle their way to the front of the grid.
      Punchy words from polesitter George Russell
      “I’m over the moon, absolutely buzzing. Yesterday was probably our worst Friday of the season and then [today] the last lap was mega and the lap time just kept on coming.
      “And then I came across the line saw we were P1.
      “We need to look into it and see where [that pace] came from. We generally have good race pace and we’ll be absolutely going for it.”

      What a Q3
      In a dramatic Q3, George Russell has stuck it on pole but so much more happened.
      Lewis Hamilton had a DRS issue and so had to pit instead of doing his final lap. He’ll start P7.
      Max Verstappen’s Red Bull ran out of power, and he’ll start 10th, only a place ahead of his teammate.
      The Ferraris of Sainz and Leclerc are 2nd and 3rd respectively, and Sainz will be wondering how he didn’t claim pole.

      Incredible
      For the first time in his Formula 1 career, George Russell is on pole! Who saw that coming??
      No power
      Max Verstappen has reported having “no power” as he leaves for his outlap.
      The race engineers are trying to help him fix it but this could be it for Verstappen. If he can’t get the car to start working again, he will qualify 7th at best.
      Q3 First Runs
      Carlos Sainz is on provisional pole and incredibly George Russell has popped himself into p2 for the time being. Who would have predicted this as a top two?
      Leclerc is 3rd after the first run, Hamilton 4th, Alonso 5th, Norris 6th, Verstappen only 7th after he made a mistake, Ocon 8th, Bottas 9th, Ricciardo 10th.
      No cars on the track as they retire to the garage before having one final run to try and set their fastest time. Things looking very good for Sainz at the moment.
      The Fight for Pole
      So in Q3 we have both Ferraris, both Mercedes, both McLarens, both Alpines, the one Red Bull of Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas and his Alfa Romeo.
      So far this season Charles Leclerc has picked up the most poles by some distance, with Verstappen in second. Perez and Sainz both have one each.
      Could we have a new polesitter today? Perhaps a man who has already gotten pole eight times at this track like Sir Lewis Hamilton?
      Q3 is now underway.
      End of Q2
      Along with Perez, we’ve lost both Hasses, the Alfa Romeo of Zhou Guanyu and Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin.
      Meanwhile, no since of a downpour of rain coming in Q3 despite reports of droplets hitting the track at the end of Q2.

      Sergio Perez is out!
      The Red Bull driver has had a shocking qualifying session and hasn’t made it out of the bottom 5
      There was some confusion over a deleted lap time which was then rescinded, but none of that matters now. Perez is set to start 11th tomorrow in a big blow to Red Bull.
      This is the sixth consecutive year he has gone out at Q2 in Hungary.
      Rain alert
      “Some drops of rain on the back straight”, Sergio Perez tells his race engineers on team radio.
      No rain visible with the naked eye over the TV cameras at the moment, but that would make things very interesting in Q3 when the remaining 10 drivers fight for pole.
      5 mins to go
      Alonso is currently second quickest, with Ocon 6th. Good pace showed by Alpine.
      Hamilton and Russell are currently fighting their way from the drop zone, with the seven-times World Champion now 3rd fastest and his teammate Russell 5th fastest.
      Ferrari back on the pace
      Ferrari look quick again on the first runs of Q2, as Leclerc and Sainz go 2nd and 3rd respectively.
      But hold on a second – Lando Norris has just gone top of the time sheets on fresh tyres.
      But he is quickly dispatched by Verstappen who is now quickest.
      About 9 minutes to go in this session.
      Rain watch
      The clouds appear to be getting lighter, and there is currently no sign of rain.
      So as we begin Q2 we march on in dry conditions which the Mercedes team – who looked horrendous in the wet this morning – will be delighted with.
      Meanwhile, at the top
      Very interesting as at the end of Q1 the two fastest cars are the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
      Carlos Sainz is 3rd and Max Verstappen 4th.
      At this stage these times don’t mean much, but it will be a boost of confidence for the Silver Arrows that they can fight for pole in about 30 minutes.
      End of Q1
      Nicholas Latifi set a purple sector 1 (what is going on with him today?) but his next two sectors aren’t fast enough, and he qualifies 20th.
      Gasly has had another shocking qualifying, continuing a theme this season, and he’ll start 19th.
      On the week he announced his retirement, Vettel can only qualify 18th. Albon qualifies 17th, with Tsunoda 16th.
      Lance Stoll has just survived and makes his way into Q2.

      Final push
      The chequered flag has fallen, meaning that the next time the cars past the line they will be onto their final lap.
      It’s make or break time, and the bottom 5 at the moment is Vettel, Latifi, Albon and Stroll and Tsunoda.
      Final stages
      Laps times are improving rapidly, and virtually every team in the bottom 5 is finding huge improvements.
      Zhou Guanyu, for example, had been in the bottom 5 but put in a lap so quick it propelled him into the top 5.
      Fewer than 3 minutes before the chequered flag falls, and the falling lap times means that very few drivers are safe from the drop.
      Bottom 5 so far
      Remember we lost the five slowest cars from Q1. So far the slowest five with 6 minutes to go is:
      Zhou, Latifi, the Aston Martins of Stroll and Vettel and Mick Schumacher. But still a long way to go.
      Slow Ferraris
      The famous Italian team have looked quick all weekend, but they were unconvincing on their first run around Hungary in Q1.
      Sainz was only quick enough for p4, while Leclerc was only p10.
      11 minutes to go
      Still a chunk of time to go but a clearer picture is emerging.
      Gasly, Vettel and Tsunoda among the slowest so far of the cars that have set lap times.
      Lando Norris looking quick again and he’s put his McLaren in P2 for now.
      Big guns out early
      Often in Q1 you will see some of the faster cars just waiting in the garage until they get some more clear track.
      But with the threat of rain lingering over this qualifying session, we’re seeing many of the fastest cars out early.
      Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is quickest so far, followed by the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, and then the other Red Bull of Sergio Perez.
      The two Ferrari cars have just left the pit garage.
      Dark clouds
      Look at the ominous clouds hanging over the Hungary circuit at the moment.
      Surely we’ll see rain over the next hour…

      Ready to go
      The green light at the end of the pit lane is about to go out and qualifying will soon get underway .
      The track is fairly dry at the moment after the deluge of rain that we saw in the final practice session.
      There could be some rain over the next hour which will help spice things up, but otherwise we expect one of the Ferraris or Max Verstappen to be on pole based on what we’ve seen so far this season.

      George Russell claims first-ever F1 pole with Lewis Hamilton seventh and Max Verstappen down in TENTH for Hungarian GP

      GEORGE RUSSELL has claimed his first-ever pole position with the Mercedes ace to start at the front of the grid for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.The Silver Arrows star snatched top spot in qualifying away from Ferrari pair Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

      But it wasn’t great news for Russell’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who has to settle for seventh.
      As for Championship leader Max Verstappen, the Red Bull driver will start in 10th spot having lost power in Q3.
      Russell failed to hide his joy after qualifying as he now sets his sights on a podium finish.
      He told Sky Sports: “I am over the moon, absolutely buzzing.

      “We are going to be absolutely going for it but either way that was a special day no doubt.”
      It was an impressive drive from McLaren’s Lando Norris in Q3, with the Brit to start in fourth place on Sunday.
      Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso then follow, with Valterri Bottas pipping Daniel Ricciardo to eighth spot.

      F1 Hungarian Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Latest from Practice Sainz tops FP1, Verstappen in second, Hamilton SEVENTH

      MAX VERSTAPPEN will be looking to further assert his dominance on this F1 season with another race win this weekend in Hungary. Chalres Leclerc is the Dutchman’s closest competitor this year, but it looks as if Verstappen is going to seal a second successive gong.
      Lewis Hamilton is still fighting, as is Leclerc’s team-mate Carlos Sainz, but a win could all but wrap up the title for Verstappen on Sunday.

      Hamilton next to leave F1?
      Following Seb Vettel’s retirement announcement, Lewis Hamilton insists he has no plans to step away from F1 just yet.
      The Brit said: “It’s a reminder that I’m in that part of my career that people that I came up with, and have raced with for so long, will start to stop.
      “Before you know it, Fernando [Alonso] will not be here and then… who is there after that?
      “I’ll be the oldest. But no, it’s not made me think about that.”

      Sainz top dog in FP1
      Carlos Sainz was 0.130 seconds quicker than Max Verstappen in first practice.
      But it’s teammate Charles Leclerc who needs the win in Hungary more than anyone as he looks to resurrect his title challenge.
      He was 0.289 seconds off the pace earlier today.
      Hamilton on Vettel

      ICYMI – Sebastian Vettel to retire
      Sebastian Vettel has confirmed he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2022 season.
      The four-time world champion, 35, made his debut in 2007 and has 290 race starts – including 53 wins.

      Tsunoda troubles in Budapest
      Yuki Tsunoda locked up going into turn one.
      His AlphaTauri’s tyres smoked in FP1 creating this cool snap.

      FP1 is done – advantage Ferrari
      Sainz tops the session from Verstappen by 0.130 seconds.
      Leclerc in third, Norris in fourth in an encouraging sign for McLaren.
      Russell fifth, Perez sixth and Hamilton in seventh as Mercedes clearly have their work cut out.
      Alpine are in ninth and 10th place with Ocon and Alonso as they sit perhaps a little further back than they’d like to be.
      Latifi is slowest with Kubica finishing just ahead of him. Schumacher and Magnussen in the bottom four, not what Haas would have hoped for with all those upgrades.
      FP2 is coming up later this afternoon.
      Kubica in 19th
      The Polish driver is standing in for Valtteri Bottas for this session but it is difficult to see what he can bring to Alfa Romeo’s improvements.
      I know they have chances to offer up slots in FP1, but Kubica is doing very little to impress and it perhaps would have been better to hand that opportunity to a young driver.
      10 minutes to go
      Sainz leads Verstappen by just 0.130 seconds. Leclerc is just 0.289 behind his teammate’s best lap time.
      It is close between the top three.
      Russell is best of the rest in fourth but 0.856 seconds slower than Sainz’s Ferrari, so Mercedes have work to do.
      Clear pattern forming at the top
      Ferrari, Red Bull, Merc drivers all occupying the top six spaces. Then the two McLarens, then the two AlfaTauris.
      At the bottom are the two Aston Martins.
      20 minutes gone
      Leclerc tops the timesheets from Verstappen. Sainz in P3 as the usual pecking order forms at the top.
      Mercedes in 7th and 8th with Russell and Hamilton.
      Norris, Stroll and Vettel are the bottom three at this stage. Norris with fewer laps than anyone else at the foot of the timesheet.
      Plenty of early action
      Every driver has been out on track to put in some early laps. That man Verstappen sits at the top of the timesheets.
      Russell is on his lap but radios his team to say the car doesn’t sound right.
      We are Go in Budapest
      The pitlane is open and the first practice session for the Hungarian GP in underway.
      Weather is glorious, warm and sunny. Should be plenty of running.
      Expect plenty of laps, especially from the Haas boys, who have a huge set of updated parts for this race.

      How Michael Schumacher’s family are making ‘big plans’ to move to Spain as wife fights to keep his condition private

      MICHAEL Schumacher’s family are reportedly making “big plans” for a new life in Spain with him as mystery continues to loom over his condition. The Formula One legend’s wife Corinna is reportedly setting up the family in a villa and with a plot of land near the ritzy town of Port Andratx in Majorca.

      Schumacher himself – whose health remains unknown – is already reported to have visited their new island villa by helicopter.
      And the family are believed to have flown the F1 icon out there again as they prepare to make the island a winter home, according to German magazine Die Bunte.
      It is also claimed they have purchased a 54,000 square meter plot of land which will be used to set up a horse ranch.
      Corinna, 53, and the Schumachers’ daughter Gina-Maria, 25, are both keen equestrians – and they have horses on their estates in Switzerland and Texas.

      It is reported the Schumachers have purchased the expansive plot of land, which is currently full of dilapidated buildings and almond trees.
      And the plot reportedly cost them 2.8million euros (£2.3million) and is described as an “absolute rarity in the region of south-west Majorca” due to how close it is to the sea.

      Reports of the Schumacher family ties to Majorca have emerged multiple times in the last four years – including reports they were planning to buy the plot land dating back to May 2021.
      The plot was reported at the time to have been to “raise and ride horses on”.
      Schumacher’s daughter is a non-professional horse rider and equestrian while Corinna won the European Championship in western-style horse riding in 2010.
      Gina-Maria’s boyfriend, Iain Bethke, is also a show jumper.
      The land is reportedly in Puerto Andratx – near to the £27million mansion – Villa Yasmin – the driver’s devoted spouse Corinna is thought to have bought from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez in 2017.
      The huge property near Andratx features two swimming pools, a large garden, a helipad, a guest villa and stunning sea views.
      And it was reported last year that Corinna was selling the family’s £6.4million mansion on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
      The family initially denied plans in 2018 they were going to move into the plush villa, but reports have persisted – including claims neighbours saw them at the property in 2019.
      And the mayor also claimed the family had moved in.
      Schumacher’s health remains shrouded in mystery after his horrific ski crash in December 2013.

      The F1 legend was a seven-time-world champion – winning five times for Ferrari and twice for Benetton – and is regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
      He raced from 1991 to 2006, and again from 2010 to 2012 – a second act of his career which saw him become instrumental in setting up Lewis Hamilton’s dominant Mercedes team.
      Schumacher retired in 2012, but just a year later he was involved in a life-changing skiing accident while on the slopes with his son Mick – who is now an F1 driver himself racing for Haas.
      He suffered a traumatic brain injury which left him in a medically induced coma.
      And the 91-time Grand Prix winner has not been seen or heard from public since – with his condition a closely guarded secret.

      Schumacher’s pal ex-F1 boss Jean Todt – who is understood be one of few friends who goes to see the stricken driver – last week gave a rare update.
      The 74-year-old told German TV channel RTL: “I don’t miss Michael, I see him. Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael.
      “But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.”
      The former Ferrari chief previously told how he “hopes the world” will be able to see his dear friend again, revealing Schumacher has “never changed”.
      He continued: “I don’t leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we’ve had so many experiences together.
      “The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.
      “Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He’s so strong.”
      And it came after Schumacher’s former manager Willi Weber accused the star’s family of lying about his condition.
      The 80-year-old said he is still “angry” that the brood hasn’t updated him on the F1 icon’s health since his skiing accident nine years ago.
      He took swipes at both Corinna and Jean Todt, saying: “They kept me out, telling me it’s too early, well now it’s too late.”

      “I miss Michael every day. But it’s not just me who misses him,” the tearful Corinna said in Netflix documentary Schumacher.

      She went on: “We try to carry on a family as Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.
      “’Private is private’, as he always said. It is very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible.
      “Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”
      Corinna has been looking after Michael and their children, Mick and Gina-Maria, ever since the skiing accident turned their lives upside down.
      The couple married in 1995 – and Gina-Maria, 25, is a keen equestrian just like mum, while Mick, 23, has followed his dad’s footsteps into F1 with the Haas team.
      And it’s now reported the family are preparing for a “new life” on the Spanish island of Majorca – but as ever details remain scant and closely guarded.
      No one outside of Schumacher’s inner circle – which has Corinna at its heart – really knows what is happening with Michael.
      Close friends have claimed they’ve been banned from seeing the stricken F1 legend as a slick PR operation and team of lawyers ensured almost nothing about his condition has been shared with his fans.

      Corinna  has reportedly slimmed down his £500m business empire and sold prized assets such as his private jet and house in Norway as the family retreated to their secluded home on the shore of Lake Geneva.
      Schumacher’s devoted wife has always said she is simply following Michael’s wishes – with the seven-time champ always being careful to keep his personal life private.
      But it has left his millions of adoring fans desperate to know the truth as rumours swirl about the allegedly bed-bound icon.
      Schumacher spoke of his love for his wife just days before his crash, telling German TV: “During all the time I was racing she was my guardian angel.”
      And she has continued to watch over him ever since, reportedly being by his side from the moment he was rushed to hospital in Grenoble.
      Corinna is said to have converted part of their £50million lakeside mansion in Gland into a state-of-the-art hospital, with a team of 15 medics providing 24-hour care at a cost of £115,000 a week.
      Meanwhile the thick surrounding forest and security fences kept him away from any possible intrusion.
      And its reported Corinna has been kitted out their £27million majorca home with a mini hospital to help make the German racer comfortable.

      The family even waged a legal battle in 2016 after German magazine Bunte reported the racing legend “could walk”.
      The court case actually led to a few small pieces of information being revealed, with Schumacher’s lawyers confirming he still couldn’t walk two years on from the crash.
      Corinna also reportedly led the effort to hide a ghoulish photo of the F1 legend that was reportedly snapped and then smuggled out by a “friend”.
      It is alleged to have been offered to European news outlets for a staggering £1million.
      German prosecutors in Offenburg later confirmed that “an unknown person” had taken “secret” snaps and were offering them for “high amounts of money”.
      They called the disgusting act a “violation of his personal range of life” and breach of privacy.
      Corinna reportedly demanded the cops take action, but the media outlets refused to reveal its source – and also claimed it never saw any of the images of Schumacher.
      Schumacher’s former manager of 20 years – Willi Weber – has fiercely raged about the lack of information as he accused the family of hiding the truth.
      The 80-year-old said he’s still “angry” at the Schumachers for not updating him on the F1 icon’s health.
      He said he initially understood the need for secrecy from the Schumacher family but that since he got out of hospital, “we have only heard lies from them”.
      “They kept me out, telling me it’s too early, well now it’s too late. It’s been nine years. Maybe they should just say it the way it is,” Weber told La Gazetta dello Sport.
      Weber, who also managed the racing great’s brother Ralf, said Schumacher was “like a son to me”.
      Another close pal also criticised the secrecy as “a pity” for his army of supporters.
      The lack of official updates has left room for speculation and conflicting reports from “insiders” about his slow progress.
      Some have claimed he was in a vegetative state while others claimed he was awake and able to talk.
      Nick Fry, Schumacher’s team boss when he drove for Mercedes, wrote in a book: “Corinna and the family have kept a very tight control on information about his treatment which, I think, is a pity.
      “There are millions of people out there who have a genuine affection for Michael, and that’s not just his fans in Germany or fans of Mercedes Benz.
      “Because of what he achieved, people would like to know about his condition; they are inquisitive and they genuinely feel for him.
      “I do think that reporting on how he is, regardless of whether it is good or bad news – and possibly it is bad news – is important because people can empathise with him.”

      And in a rare interview with Germany’s She magazine in 2019, Corinna revealed it is her notoriously private husband who has dictated the news blackout.
      She said: “He is in the best of hands right now and we are doing everything we can to help him.
      “Try to understand that we follow Michael’s desire to keep his health a secret.”
      Manager Sabine Kehm offered a hopeful update, telling German broadcaster ARD: “There are short moments of consciousness and he is showing small signs of progress.
      “There are moments when he is awake and moments when he is conscious.
      “Of course I am not a doctor, but medically, there is a distinction between being awake and being conscious, the latter meaning there is an ability to interact with his surroundings.”
      Schumacher’s pal ex-F1 boss Jean Todt – who is understood be one of few friends who goes to see the stricken driver – last week gave a rare update.
      The 74-year-old told German TV channel RTL: “I don’t miss Michael, I see him. Yes, it’s true, I watch races with Michael.
      “But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together.”
      The former Ferrari chief previously told how he “hopes the world” will be able to see his dear friend again, revealing Schumacher has “never changed”.
      He continued: “I don’t leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we’ve had so many experiences together.
      “The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.
      “Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He’s so strong.”
      Schumacher was left in a medically induced coma after his accident while skiing off piste on December 29, 2013 – spending three months in hospital before being released home.
      He is reported to have suffered a traumatic injury to his brain.
      The F1 legend was a seven-time-world champion – winning five times for Ferrari and twice for Benetton – and is regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
