THE Austrian Grand Prix left a sour taste in the mouth as it was dragged into a mire of tales of harassment, sexism, homophobia and racism.What should have been a celebration of the explosion of colour, a captivating grand prix and Charles Leclerc breathing life into the title race, was left with the sport’s main characters condemning the behaviour of a minority.

Such a condemnation is entirely justified as any such incidents should not be tolerated in society — let alone at an F1 race.
It leaves the sport in a tricky position.
F1 is riding a wave of popularity and such disgusting stories are not only sad but also potentially damaging.
Why would fans want to attend a race if they feared they would be exposed to such behaviour?

Some female friends of mine, who either work in or attend races, feel it should be made clear on tickets that using offensive language or behaviour would result in them being kicked out of the event.
The issue, of course, is policing it.
At a football match, the area is considerably smaller and the steward-to-fan ratio far higher, not to mention the amount of CCTV cameras to catch perpetrators.

Surely, if we are to crack down on these morons there needs to be a line of direct communication to the circuit to ensure they are able to investigate and take appropriate action.
An anonymous hotline to call or number to text, plus relevant signage on each ticket and grandstand, would be an excellent way of reporting abuse or unacceptable behaviour.
There will be some circuits, no doubt, who will be in denial and say that any such system would be a waste of time. That might be the case, so why don’t we just see.
As a white male, I have not been subjected to such abuse as was reported last weekend — but it does not mean it does not go on.

There is no doubt that the fan landscape of F1 is changing — you only need to look at the toxicity on social media to see the division between the fan bases.
It is becoming more tribal and more like football, and we must have new mechanisms in place to cope.
We must ensure fans feel welcomed and safe — and those idiots who abuse need to understand that it will NOT be tolerated.

The Italian put his motor in a ditch after partying on the island last week and faces a driving ban.

Bernie Ecclestone charged with fraud after ‘failing to declare £400m in overseas assets’

Chief crown prosecutor Andrew Penhale said this afternoon that the CPS authorised the charge “in respect of his failure to declare to HMRC the existence of assets held overseas”.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against this defendant are now active and that they have a right to a fair trial,” he said.
“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
Simon York, director of HMRC’s fraud investigation service, said: “We can confirm that a fraud by false representation charge has been authorised against Bernard Ecclestone.

He added: “I mean especially after a difficult Friday with the crash which was not expected and I’m really so still sorry to the team of course, but just so proud of everyone for working so hard to rebuild the car.
“And also just proud of everyone back at the factory for continuing to work hard. I know, they’re going to have to know what they do with those bits that I destroyed. But hopefully we have some new better bits to come after that.

TOTO WOLFF has told “brainless” F1 fans who abused other spectators at the Austrian Grand Prix to “f*** off”.F1 chiefs and drivers condemned the harassment reported by a number of fans, which they claimed happened at the Red Bull Ring.

She added: “When I confronted them, they said that no Hamilton fan deserves any respect at all”.
The social media post triggered an outpouring of comments complaining of similar abuse, which included homophobic and racist slurs.
Wolff said: “If you are a real Formula One fan, whatever team, whatever driver, you can’t be a racist, you can’t be homophobic and you can’t be sexist because then you don’t fit to Formula One and we don’t want you.

It comes after former F1 champion Nelson Piquet used racist and homophobic words in a recently aired interview towards Lewis Hamilton and has subsequently been banned by F1.
A statement from F1 said: “We have been made aware of reports that some fans have been subject to completely unacceptable comments by others at the event.
“We have raised this with the promoter and security and will be speaking to those who have reported these incidents and are taking this very seriously.
“This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated and all fans should be treated with respect.”
Hamilton, who had criticised fans for cheering his crash during qualifying, was also quick to condemn the behaviour.
He said: “I arrived with a really positive mindset this morning and then I heard of some of the things that had been said.
“Just in a bit of shock and really sad, just to know that people arrive on the weekend to have a great time, to celebrate and to enjoy their time off and enjoy a great experience.
“If you go to the UK, we’ve got a wide range of fans that go there. Here you’ve got a lot of the Orange Army.
“But just to know that someone sitting in a crowd supporting someone else is receiving abuse… It’s crazy to think we are still experiencing these things in 2022.

Verstappen was closing fast in the final laps of the race, but Leclerc managed to coax his car home to score his first P1 since Australia on April 10.
The result reignited Leclerc’s hopes of a maiden world title, and cut Verstappen’s lead at the top of the standings to 38 points.
Speaking after his win, Leclerc said: “It was a really good race, the pace was there and the end was incredibly difficult with the throttle problem, but we managed to make it stick until the end.
“Weirdly my problem was at the same time as Carlos, but I knew it was a pedal problem rather than an engine problem.
“I definitely needed that one. The last five races have been difficult for me and the team and it is great to finally get one.”
Hamilton meanwhile vowed to keep “chipping away” as he recorded another important podium.
The seven-time world champ said: “What an incredible crowd, it has been a difficult weekend, a rough weekend, but we take the points and move forward.
“I want to say a big thank you to the guys in the garage, I am so thankful to them for working so hard. We have made some improvements and we will keep chipping away at them.”
Russell took fourth despite being hit with a five-second penalty after an opening-lap collision with Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, which eventually caused the Red Bull driver to retire.
Esteban Ocon (Alpine) took the chequered flag in fifth ahead of Schumacher (Haas), who backed up his first points in F1 last weekend with another top 10 finish.
Lando Norris (McLaren) finished seventh, with Kevin Magnussen (Haas) eighth, Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) ninth and Fernando Alonso (Alpine) rounding off the points in tenth.

CARLOS SAINZ’S horror luck continued when his car caught FIRE during the Austrian GP. With the Ferrari star driving in third and looking to make a move on Max Verstappen, his engine suddenly failed.

The Spaniard pulled his car to a halt on the side of the track and just seconds later it suddenly burst into flames.
Sainz stayed behind the wheel for a few seconds as the flames spread, before a track marshal finally got to him and Sainz dramatically bailed out.
Flames poured out of the Ferrari as Sainz escaped as the car rolled backwards.
It was Sainz’s fourth mechanical failure of the season.

CHARLES LECLERC overcame the dramatic Red Bull Ring circuit to secure first place at the Austrian Grand Prix.The Ferrari icon picked a perfect moment in lap 53 to overtake Max Verstappen who led throughout most of the race.
And Carlos Sainz looked to be gaining momentum in third spot before a engine failure sent his Ferrari up in flames.
Which then presented the opportunity for seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton to claim the final spot on the podium

Carlos Sainz reacts
When speaking to Sky Sports, Sainz said:
“I knew there was something wrong as soon as it happened.
“There was no feedback that it was about to happen. It was very sudden and it is hard because it was a big loss of points and a potential one-two for the team.
“I saw a lot of fire and damage and we will have to look at why this is.
“It is more difficult to take because we were about to bring in a very big result to cut the gap to Max and Red Bull, but it is still a long season ahead.”

Sainz’s escape
Carlos Sainz was forced to retire from today’s race due to an engine failure.

When questioned by Sky Sports about his early exit from the race, Perez said:
“It is a big shame for us, I clearly felt that we did everything we could to avoid an incident.
“George couldn’t control the speed into turn four and and we ended up making contact when I was clearly ahead.
“I am sorry for what happened to Carlos Sainz but that is nothing to do with us.
“The car has not been up there this week so there is some good analysis to be done.”

When speaking to Sky Sports, the Red Bull chief said:
“They were very important points today and congratulations to Ferrari, they had a quicker car throughout the majority of the race.
“Max was coming back at the end there but our tyre deg was higher from halfway through the first stint and it was hard to combat that.
“Ferrari just seemed lighter on the tyres and obviously they had a pace advantage and that gives you more strategic options.
“Losing Checo was obviously hugely disappointing.
“It is unlucky for them today with Carlos but our pace at the end of the race, we still have the fastest lap, but we didn’t have the range we had yesterday and that is something we need to understand.
“Over the two races we have only given away five points with Max so it is not too bad. We will bounce back in France.”

“It was a tricky day.
“It seemed like we were struggling quite a bit with the tyres, and that happened on every compound – too much degradation on the tyres.
“But second place is still a good result for us on a tricky day.”

“It was a really good race. The pace was there. At the beginning we had some good fights with Max and the end was incredibly difficult.
“I had this issue with the throttle. It would get stuck at 20 or 30 per-cent throttle in the low speeds, so it was very tricky.
“We managed to make it stick until the end and I am so happy.
“Weirdly [the throttle issue] was more or less the same time [as Sainz’s retirement], so I had it in my mind.
“I knew it was not a problem with the engine because it was the pedal that was feeling weird. Luckily it went until the end of the race.
“I definitely needed that one. The last five races have been incredibly difficult for myself and for the team.
“To finally show that we have the pace in the car and we can do it is incredible. We need to push until the end.”
