Lewis Hamilton set for first EVER winless F1 season and admits Mercedes still cannot keep up with pace of Red Bull

LEWIS HAMILTON looks set for his first winless season in F1 after being pipped to the chequered flag by Max Verstappen in Texas.Verstappen – who equals F1’s record for the most wins in a season with 13 – also helped his Red Bull team wrap up an emotional constructors’ championship at the US GP.

Hamilton pushed him to the wire and crossed the line five second behind the Dutchman meaning his barren run, which stretches back to last November, goes on.
The seven-time world champion also came close to winning in Holland, while he was second in France and Hungary, but feels a win is beyond him given Red Bull’s pace.
He said: “It feels amazing to be within shooting distance of Max for some points of the race.
“It felt for a second that I might be able to hold on to it, but the medium tyre was too strong.”

When asked if he could win this season, he added: “We need to be realistic. The Red Bull car has been the fastest car all year and it is still the fastest car.
“We were in the position we were in due to reliability. If Charles Leclerc or Sergio Perez were there, they would have been ahead of us.
“It was great starting third and being in a position to fight, but in true pace they were ahead of us and will be in the next three races.
“Unless something drastic happens to any more of them, It is highly unlikely we will have the true pace to compete with them.

“Max had an 11 second stop and [came out behind] Charles, so get past him and then pass me and get ahead, shows some real speed.”
Hamilton and Verstappen played out a thrilling final six laps, as both struggled to remain inside the while lines as they battled for position.
But it was Verstappen who crossed the line first, helping Red Bull to an emotional victory following the death of the energy drink’s co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz.
There were no black armbands. Instead, Red Bull’s staff wore blue jeans, as was the billionaire’s preference.
There was a one-minute applause as teams paid their respects before the race and a message “Danke Didi” was displayed on the screen.
Verstappen added: “It’s a very difficult weekend for us and this one is definitely dedicated to Dietrich himself for what he has done for everyone.
“We had a big chance to win the constructors here and of course you want to do that in style and I think we did that.

“It definitely means a lot to me, to the team, because he was so instrumental to the whole team, it will all continue but we of course wanted to have a good result today.”
A record crowd of 440,000 over the weekend reaffirmed F1’s popularity boom in the United States.
And they were treated to a first-lap smash as Verstappen was catapulted into the lead when pole-sitter Carlos Sainz was spun off by George Russell.
And there were more fireworks when Fernando Alonso clipped Lance Stroll and was launched into the air at 200mph, causing his Alpine to do a wheelie.
Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris both had narrow escapes as they missed the wreckage, while Alonso somehow finished the race in seventh.
But after the race the Spaniard was hit with a 30-second time penalty after his damaged car was deemed unsafe by stewards. He is now classified as finishing 15th.
Once the mess from the crash was cleared up and the race restarted on lap 26, Verstappen kept ahead of Hamilton but for the first time in ages, the Mercedes man was able to keep up.
On lap 35, the Brit pitted for fresh tyres in what was a seamless synchronised stop for his Mercedes team.
Red Bull responded by calling in Verstappen a lap later but a problem with the front left wheel resulted in a slow 11.1 second pitstop.
The delay left Verstappen furious – “beautiful, f****** beautiful!” he shouted over the radio as he was leapfrogged in the pecking order by Hamilton and Leclerc.
Verstappen returned to the track in sixth but slowly chipped away at Hamilton’s lead, catching him with six laps to go.
He made his move at Turn 12, the two came incredibly close to banging wheels but he got the move done.
But there was still drama as both were warned about exceeding the track limits, triggering potential penalties. Yet Hamilton did not have to pace to mount a fightback. More

Watch Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll collide in horror 180mph crash as car rears on two wheels at US Grand Prix

FERNANDO ALONSO and Lance Stroll were involved in a horror 180mph crash during last night’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.During Lap 22 of the race, not long after a safety car restart, veteran Alonso attempted to get by his future Aston Martin team-mate.
⚠️ SAFETY CAR! ⚠️There’s a high-speed collision between Alonso and Stroll, and we have another Safety Car! Stroll is out of the race. Both drivers are okay. pic.twitter.com/81IgKXe0iR— Sky Sports F1 (@SkySportsF1) October 23, 2022

Fernando Alonso’s front tyres were sent into the air
    This was Alonso’s terrifying view
As he did so he made contact with Stroll’s rear, sending the Canadian spinning and ending his race.
Alonso’s Alpine, meanwhile, nearly propelled into the air, its front two wheels airborne as the Spaniard wrestled for control of his car as it did a wheelie down the track.
Luckily his rear wheels remained on the track and he was somehow able to continue the race.
Following Alonso’s initial seventh place finish, he and Stroll were called into the steward’s office to review the incident – with the latter deemed to be at fault.

The 23-year-old was subsequently slapped with a three-place grid drop for the Mexican Grand Prix next week, after what Alonso described as a “very late move”.
Stroll has also received two penalty points on his license.
After the race, he said: “I looked at it. I mean, first of all, I think it’s a shame, we were having a good race. I left him plenty of room on the left.
“It was a big difference in speed. I was kind of judging where he was behind me and I moved based on where I thought he was behind me.

“But he got really close to me and we just made contact, so [it’s] frustrating.”
Meanwhile, Alonso said: “Five minutes ago, I was fine, now I’m in a little bit of pain, so I’ll have to wait until tomorrow probably to really see.
“But the car is very strong again. Whoever has a problem with Alpine normally has everything to lose!
“We have a very strong car and we changed tyres, the front wing, and kept going.
It was scary in the car, because when you are up in the air, anything can happenFernando Alonso
“It was amazing that the car managed to complete the 31 laps until the end and we still finished P7 after being P17, so it was a good race.
“It was scary in the car, because when you are up in the air, anything can happen. When I saw that I landed on the track, I said, ‘Okay, I will retire the car now and that’s it for today.’ But no, change tyres, front wing – go!”
After the race, Alonso’s P7 finish was downgraded to P15 after he received a 30-second penalty when it was deemed that his car had been “sent back out on track in an unsafe condition.”
Later in the race, his wing mirror fell off as his battered car struggled to remain in one piece.

Verstappen – who equals F1’s record for the most win in a season with 13 – also helped his team wrap up an emotional constructors’ championship.
Hamilton pushed him to the wire and crossed the line five seconds behind the Dutchman meaning his barren run, which stretches back to last November, goes on.
The two rivals played out a thrilling final six laps, as both struggled to remain inside the while lines as they battled for position.
But it was Verstappen who crossed the line first, helping Red Bull to an emotional victory following the death of the energy drink’s co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said: “Max Verstappen you are world champion, we are world champions. That one was for Dietrich, thanks for all you have done”.
The Austrian tycoon passed away on Saturday evening. He was 78 – plunging his team into mourning.

Mateschitz discovered the Krating Daeng energy drink in 1984 when he was a travelling salesman working for a toothpaste company and transformed it into the global brand it is today.
His passing prompted Red Bull to suspend their ongoing discussion with F1’s governing body, the FIA, over their cost-cap breach which has dominated the news agenda for the past three races.
It means it will now rumble on into this week’s Mexican GP, against F1’s wishes given they want the matter resolved quickly as it has tarnished their sport.
Owners Liberty Media have been trying to grow F1’s popularity and a record crowd of 440,000 over the weekend show they are doing just that.
And they were treated to a first-lap smash as Verstappen was catapulted into the lead when pole-sitter Carlos Sainz was spun off by George Russell, earning the Mercedes man a five-second time penalty.
Verstappen set the pace but he was being pressed by Hamilton until the safety car was deployed on lap 18 when Valtteri Bottas spun off.
The race resumed at the end of lap 21 but only briefly as a big smash for Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso saw the safety car redeployed.
The Spaniard went into the rear of the Aston Martin, launching him into the air while Stroll’s wrecked car was spat out by the crash barrier and into oncoming traffic.
Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris both had narrow escapes as they missed the wreckage.

Once the mess was cleared up and the race restarted on lap 26, Verstappen still kept ahead of Hamilton but crucially he was not able to pull away.
For the first time in ages, the Mercedes man was able to keep up – and it paid off.
On lap 35, the Brit pitted for fresh tyres in what was a seamless synchronised stop for his Mercedes team.
Red Bull responded by calling in Verstappen a lap later but while their stops are routinely the quickest – and they are the pitstop record holders – a problem with the front left wheel resulted in a slow 11.1second pitstop.
The delay left their driver furious – “beautiful, f***ing beautiful!” he shouted over the radio as he was leapfrogged in the pecking order by Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen returned to the track in sixth and had his work cut out to reach Hamilton. Slowly he chipped away.
And with six laps to go, he was within a second of the Mercedes as he eyed up his prey.

MAX VERSTAPPEN was heckled by fans at the US Grand Prix as they chanted “cheater, cheater!” at the double-world champion.A video has emerged on social media of the Red Bull man on stage at a fan event in Austin, Texas, for this weekend’s race.

But a group are heard in the short clip shouting at the Dutchman, whose team are the subject of a cost-cap breach with the sport’s governing body, the FIA.
Red Bull are anxiously waiting to find out what sort of penalties they will be hit by, with sporting and financial penalties both very much on the table as they attempt to hash out a deal.
Team Principal Christian Horner has maintained the team’s innocence over their breaking of the £114million budget cap.
The overspend transgression is believed to be in the region of £1.8m, with Horner adamant the team did not gain a competitive advantage over their rivals.

However, in a leaked letter to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 boss, Stefano Domenicali, McLaren chief Zak Brown said their overspend would “constitute cheating.”
He also lobbied the FIA to enact harsh financial and performance-related penalties on the team going forward, including reducing their budget cap next season and limiting their wind tunnel testing.
But Horner hit back at the accusations, saying: “We have had sight of that letter, which wasn’t copied to us, and it is tremendously disappointing for a fellow competitor to be accusing you of cheating.
“To accuse you of fraudulent activity is shocking. For another competitor, without the facts and without any knowledge of the details to be making that sort of accusation.

The two are trying to thrash out a deal for their proposed punishment while Brown lobbied the FIA in a private letter to president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and copied in the F1 boss, Stefano Domenicali.
Brown said the overspend breach “constitute cheating” before he suggested a list of punishments for Red Bull, which has left Horner furious.
He said: “We have had sight of that letter, which wasn’t copied to us, and it is tremendously disappointing for a fellow competitor to be accusing you of cheating.

“You cannot go around just making that kind of allegation without any facts or substance. So, we are absolutely appalled by the behaviour of some of our competitors.”
Brown saye he wrote the letter to be transparent, taking it upon himself to say how fellow team’s felt about the cost cap breach.
He said: “All the teams have opinions and some speak about it vocally, others don’t necessarily always bring forward.
“I thought it was important from a transparency standpoint. We all sit around the table. There’s a lot of times we discuss things openly and then there’s a lot of back-channelling and I thought I would just lay it out there.”
Horner, who refused to say what punishment he was haggling over, said his team have not gained from their overspend, believed to be around £1.8million.
And he said it was vital that the FIA come up with a solution to stop this farce from happening again, as this row – which relates to the 2021 season – could yet rumble on for another NINE MONTHS.
He added: “We have spent the last 10 days or so going backwards and forwards with the FIA. I hoped for it to be resolved before this weekend. I’m hopeful that it can be resolved during this weekend.
“But should that not not happen, the next process is it goes to the cost cap administration and then beyond that, there’s the International Court of Appeal.
“So they could drag it out for another six, nine months, which is not our intention.
“We want closure on 2021. I think that you know, we’ve had some healthy and productive discussions with with the FIA, and I’m hopeful of being able to reach a conclusion in the near future.
“We made an interim submission in 2021. There was no feedback or suggestion that we were doing anything that was contrary to any regulations.
“The submission was made in March. Again, we didn’t hear anything from that until September.”
He also added: “We categorically don’t feel that we’ve had any advantage, either in 2021 or 2022 or 23. Or 24, or somebody’s talking about 2026. It is totally fictitious.
“We cannot be in November or October waiting for the outcome for last year’s championship.

“The regulations were placed on the FIA to police and surprised them the scale of some of the teams and the complexity of if.
“We have been assured the process will be quicker for the next of this year but there are already significant challenges for 2022.” More
