Crofty shut Russell down, but then checked with Perez that he could ask him questions
The event was presented by Sky race commentator David “Crofty” Croft who was tasked with asking the drivers relatively light-hearted questions.
But it came just days after news that Red Bull were boycotting Sky interviews, with world champion Max Verstappen refusing to appear on their cameras after reporter Ted Kravitz implied he “robbed” Lewis Hamilton of last year’s title.
Crofty’s fellow Sky colleague Martin Brundle slammed Red Bull’s decision to stop giving the broadcaster any air time.
And Perez does not seem to think the boycott is a particularly serious issue as he laughed off the situation during his on-stage interview.

Russell jokingly asked Crofty: “Sorry, are you allowed to ask Red Bull drivers questions?”
To which Crofty responded: “I am tonight, yep. I’ve got special permission tonight. Don’t start on me.”
He then asked Perez: “Are you allowed to answer?”
To which the Mexican driver replied: “Yes… while they’re not here!”

Brundle defended Kravitz on social media after the spat between Sky Sports and Red Bull continued to rage following the Mexico Grand Prix.
He said: “For the avoidance of doubt my friend and colleague for the past 26 years Ted Kravitz has my full support.
“Face to face dialogue is the only way to sort out issues and disputes in the relentless crucible of the F1 paddock.
“We all have opinions and different jobs to do, that’s life.”
Brundle’s comment comes after Verstappen posted his own message online.
It read: “At the moment, social media is a very toxic place.

He did hand the team their only victory of last season at Monza, but ultimately finished 45 points behind Norris in the drivers’ championship.
And this year it has been even more of a struggle for the ex-Red Bull man.
Ricciardo has finished in the points just six times, racking up 35 compared to Norris’ 111.
But the Aussie remains determined to return to the sport in 2024 and has admitted some time out of the car could be a positive.
He said: “I can confidently say that I won’t be on the grid behind a wheel [next year].
“But I still want to be in the sport, and I want to be working with a team still with the ambition to be back on the grid in 2024.

Hamilton saw the funny side of it though as he joked about the mishap on stage later that evening.

Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Christian Horner slam Mercedes for trying to ‘take shine off’ F1 title win

MAX VERSTAPPEN and Christian Horner slammed Mercedes for trying to ‘take the shine off’ the Dutchman’s maiden Formula One title win.The 24-year-old won the world championship in dramatic fashion on the final lap of the 2021 season when he overtook Lewis Hamilton following a safety car fiasco.

And this season, Verstappen has been equally as phenomenal – securing a second world title in successive years.
But last season, Hamilton and Mercedes were left furious as the strict rules were thrown out of the window to allow a blockbuster finale in front of the Netflix cameras.
A protest was turned down before Mercedes withdrew an appeal and Verstappen kept the victory – although an FIA investigation did result in race director Michael Masi’s sacking.
Before this campaign, Verstappen hit out at his rivals and insisted he ‘doesn’t care’ about the Mercedes reaction.
He told De Telegraaf back in March: “If they [people] know me well, they know I don’t care.
“At the end of the day, it was a crazy and epic Formula 1 season.
“The losing team will try to take the shine off it a bit. But on the winning side, it still feels good, I can assure you.

“A championship is won over a whole season, not by one decision in the last race. I also think I deserved the title, absolutely.
“There might be people who only watched the last Grand Prix. They might think I was lucky.
“But normally the championship would have been decided in my favour.”
Verstappen’s boss Horner reiterated the champ’s comments and insisted his driver has not been affected by all the talk surrounding the controversy.
Instead, he predicted his man to challenge for the title once again. A prediction that came true.
Appearing on BBC Breakfast, the Red Bull team principal said: “I think it’s gone completely over his head. He doesn’t watch the BBC.
“He was delighted to get that first world championship, against such a strong opponent. I think that’s what made it so intense.
    ‘RIVALRY SO INTENSE’
“I think the rivalry between those two [Max and Lewis] has been so intense. I think you might see a couple of other drivers come into that fray as well.
“It was epic last year and if that continues I think there’s going to be some fantastic races next season.
“The sport has never had so much coverage and so much support – it’s great to see.”
Verstappen signed a fresh contract in March worth a whopping £37million per year.
However, he trails Hamilton financially – who rakes in around £47million-per-annum. More

Hamilton’s current contract runs until the end of the 2023 campaign.
But the 37-year-old F1 icon is planning on extending his career behind the wheel.
Hamilton confirmed last month that he is wants to pen a new deal that would likely see him carry on racing into his forties.
Despite suggestions discussions had already begun, Wolff confirmed a new contract has not been spoken about yet.

Although the Austrian said Hamilton is now “much more than a driver” to Mercedes, after the seven-time world champion called the team his “family” in October.
And talks are set to get underway at the end of the campaign and during the winter period.
Wolff said, as per Motorsport: “We haven’t started having talks.
“We want to definitely finish the season and then find some quiet time over the winter like we have done last time around, that literally started in the winter holidays and lasted over two months.

“We haven’t done that. But he’s much more than a driver to us now.
“Although we’re not talking about a career end, it’s also important to speak about his role as an ambassador for Mercedes and the many sponsors that we have, and the implication he can have in our wider audience.”
Hamilton is yet to register a race win this season, and has just two more bites at the cherry before the campaign comes to a close.
The Brit has won at least one race in all of his 15 years in F1, but is in danger of losing that record with just two more circuits left on the calendar.
Mercedes though still see him as their man going forward.

And, after a horror start to this season, results have improved in recent weeks.

He continued breaking records at the weekend when he won the Mexican GP for his 14th victory of the season.
That’s put him above legends Michael Schumacher and Seb Vettel for most wins in a year.

But he was given a major boost by Red Bull’s slow pit stop for Verstappen’s team-mate and local hero Sergio Perez.
The 5.3-second stop – significantly longer than Red Bull’s usual speedy pits – was critical in allowing Hamilton to avoid the undercut and pip the Mexican to P2.
Red Bull put ‘Checo’ on the medium tyres in an attempt to put pressure on Hamilton, who was racing on hards.
Team principal Christian Horner confirmed there would be an internal review to work out what went wrong for the mechanics – and to prevent a repeat error in Brazil or Abu Dhabi.

The blunder in Mexico came a week after a nightmare pit stop for Verstappen at the United States GP.
Although the dominant world champion recovered with blistering speed to get past Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to win the race in Austin.
Horner – whose side have already wrapped up the F1 constructors’ championship – said: “I think without the issue of the pitstop, I think Checo [Perez] would have got the jump on Lewis.
“We need to investigate what caused that.

“It looks like the nut actually stuck, or it wouldn’t undo cleanly.
“But it was a great recovery from him.
“Again, very strong pace, but just not quite enough to be able to make the pass on Lewis.
“Unfortunately, he was 0.03 of a second off [Hamilton] when he wanted to get the DRS, and so he just wasn’t quite within range.”
