I fought back from 171mph horror crash and 11-hour operation to become the only woman in Formula 3

SOPHIA FLOERSCH could have been forgiven for thinking her time in F3 was up.Back in 2018, when she was just 17, the German driver was involved in a horror crash at the Macau Grand Prix that left five people seriously injured and saw her rushed to hospital.

A shattered spine, the result of a 171mph smash which saw her catapulted off a bend and into a cabin, meant she had to undergo an 11-hour operation.
Surgeons worked tirelessly over half a day to ensure her fractured vertebra was stabilised.
But on Friday, beautiful Sophia will return to F3 for the first time in nearly three years.
This season, she is signed to PHM Racing by Charouz – and is the ONLY woman on the grid.

Better still, her dream of competing in Formula 1 has been reignited after Alpine added her to their Driver Academy.
    Inspired by Vettel and dad
Ever since she was four, Sophia dreamed of being a racing driver.
Her dad drove karts, which encouraged her to do the same when she was a child growing up in Bavaria.
The success of four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel, also inspired her to follow in his footsteps.

“I always watched his races and I was always like: ‘I want to be there’,” she told CNN.
“So of course, you dream of it. But you’re small and so, so far away, especially when you’re in karting.”
Sophia soon became a trailblazer in her sport – setting records for being the fastest, youngest and the only woman, as she rose through the ranks of various racing formats.
Although being female had its challenges.
She continued: “There are people who say: ‘You’re a woman, you’re not going to make it.
“But in the end, this just motivates myself even more.
“I think as a woman, a struggle you have is to find people to give you money for it. Everyone knows that the sport is really expensive and you can spend a lot of money just for going testing during [the] winter period or so.
“And that’s kind of the struggle you have as a woman, to find companies who believe in you, who trust you to beat the man and to get the same chances and possibilities.”

This season, that support has come from Formula 3 promoter Bruno Michel.
Michel recently revealed that the series is helping Floersch with her budget this season to encourage more women to take part in motorsport.
    That fateful day
But there might not have been another campaign for Sophia, after miraculously surviving her Macau accident.
Following a collision with Japan’s Sho Tsuboi, her car went airborne over the safety barriers – drawing gasps from an anxious crowd.
Incredibly, Sophia survived the accident. Her fractured spine, though, required an intricate, pain-staking operation.
Surgeons worked meticulously to remove a bone splinter that was just inches away from her spinal cord.
After returning home to recover, incredibly she was back behind the wheel four months later.
Remembering the incident, Floersch felt like it happened to someone else.
“If I watched the video, I still don’t believe it’s me flying there just because it didn’t feel like this when I was in a car,” she confessed.

    Fighting for equality
When it comes to gender equality, motorsport is lacking in female role models.
An advocate for change, Sophia understands that being the fastest driver isn’t about being a man or a woman.
“It’s not about having more muscles. There’s more factors which are playing in,” she explained.
“I think women can do the same and women can drive a car as quickly as a man and drive it on the limit the same.
“There was never a really successful woman in the class of motorsport, but it is for sure possible.
“A lot of things have changed during the past years. I think for sure change is going on in the business.

“But in the end, I think women still have to prove ourselves; we still have to prove it and win championships and against men and not against other women.”
Which takes her to her next goal.
Floersch is now a step closer to racing in F1, after Alpine confirmed they had added her to its Driving Academy last month.
“Joining the Alpine Academy is an honour and a major opportunity in my career,” Floersch said.
“I have great ambitions and I am sure by applying the knowledge and expertise from Alpine, it will only help me grow.
“I can’t wait to start this new chapter and represent the Alpine brand on the global stage.”
The F1 constructors are pushing for more female drivers with their ‘Race(H)er’ programme launched last summer.
Last year, Floersch stated: “I’m 21 years old and I think I can and should pursue this goal,” when asked if she believes she has a future in F1.

Last year he went winless for the first time in his career.
And former world champions Jenson Button and Damon Hill have questioned whether he will lose the desire if that poor run goes on.
But Hamilton, 38, who has made no secret of the fact he wants to extend his Mercedes deal beyond this season, is confident he will agree new terms with boss Toto Wolff.
He said: “Ultimately people are creating rumours without facts. It’s never helpful. And you would have thought they would have both known by now.

“I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13. Having a difficult year; whether or not we have a difficult year this year, I’ll still be here. I’m a fighter, and we fight as a team.
“I love the challenge of finding solutions. I still believe I’m able to put the car in places that others are perhaps not able to, and I love that challenge.
“Of course I wish that we start the season with a great car. But it’s the journey that really counts.
“So there is no hold up with our contract. I’ve always been very, very relaxed. I don’t feel like I’ve got to get it done right this second. I’m in a very fortunate position.

“It’ll get done when we’re ready. I have a great relationship with Toto and Mercedes, and we fully support each other.
“I’m really excited about the future together. I’m really proud of the work that we’re doing on and off the track, and the potential things we can do going forward. We’ll get there.”
There were mixed messages from Mercedes after last week’s three days of testing but Hamilton says that from the very first lap at a shakedown at Silverstone that he knew of the challenges he would be facing this season.
While the bouncing has been cured, there is still some way to go before he feels he can catch up to Red Bull and Ferrari.
He added: “We arrive here with a much better understanding of the challenges that are ahead.

“We’ve had a few really good days of digesting the data and I’ve been on calls every day with the team.
“Everyone’s been working so hard to make sure we arrive here as best prepared we can with the information we have.
“I knew from the moment I first drove the car where we were and the challenges that we would be facing.
“On a positive note, not having the bouncing this year is a huge plus and now we can focus on just pure performance.

“I’m encouraged to see the focus and courage of everyone with the team on getting us back to the top.

‘Not to throw shade but…’ – F1 star Alex Albon explains the problem of being team-mates with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen

EX-RED BULL driver Alex Albon has explained the problem of being team-mates with double Formula One world champion, Max Verstappen. Albon, 26, raced alongside Verstappen, 25, for a season-and-a-half between 2019 and 2021.

However, the Thai-British driver struggled in the Red Bull car compared to the flying Dutchman.
And in 2021, Albon was demoted to the role of test and reserve driver with Red Bull with his seat being taken by Sergio Perez, who still partners Verstappen today.
Ahead of the 2023 season, Williams driver Albon has explained the challenges of being the team-mate of Verstappen, who is hoping to win a third world crown in a row.
Albon says the Red Bull car is built to suit Verstappen, which can be challenging for the No2.
    READ MORE F1 NEWS
Writing on the Players’ Tribune, Albon said: “This isn’t to throw shade at anyone at Red Bull Racing or Max or anything, honestly.
“But the car is set up in a unique way that is built around the lead driver, and that’s Max.
“And, look, I totally get why. I mean, when all is said and done, he might be the greatest driver of all time.
“But he has a very distinct style of driving, and he likes the car set up a certain way that’s hard for a lot of drivers to sync up with.

“Of course, you can tinker and tweak your own car, but just the Red Bull in general is suited to Max’s style.
“I like a lot of front end and nose. I’ve been teammates with George and Charles and I’ve always had way more nose than them.
“Basically think front-end sensitivity. And when I got into the Red Bull … I mean there was so much nose on the thing that if you blew on the wheel the car would turn.
“If you play Call of Duty, or a game like that, turn your sensitivity up to the highest it will go. That’s what it’s like to drive that car.
“And like I said, I completely understand why.
“Max was, at the time, a future world champion. It was clear for all to see.
“So, of course, you’re going to build your car how he likes.
“But for a guy like me, who had driven 12 F1 races his entire life, in a completely different car, on a different team, it was a bit of an adjustment.
“And I felt like I did O.K.!! I only finished worse than sixth once the rest of the year with Red Bull, and I was getting up to speed with everything as best I could.
“But F1 is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business most of the time. And even though I didn’t feel out of place at Red Bull, the next season wasn’t easy.
“The pandemic impacted everything, and I felt I really needed that extra time with the car that we lost. It was a massive break between Abu Dhabi and the first race.

What is a rolling start in F1?

The FORMULA 1 2023 season is set to get underway with the Bahrain Grand Prix.F1 races can start in two different ways, which are the standing start and the rolling start.
Charles Leclerc leading the start of the French Formula One Grand Prix
Max Verstappen leading the start of the Dutch Grand Prix
A rolling start has the cars on the grid in a formation behind a safety car at a pre-determined speed for a number of laps.
The safety car indicates it’s returning to the pits by turning off the flashing lights.
When the safety car arrives at the pit and is off the track, the race will return to “green flag” conditions.
All cars must wait for the green flag to be on show or for the information to be communicated over the radio before they can start accelerating.

The race leader will take the first position, and the trailing vehicles must stay in single-file behind.
No driver can overtake the race leader prior to the race officially beginning.
When are rolling starts used in F1?
Rolling starts are typically used when the weather conditions are deemed too unsafe for a standing start.
They are used more commonly during NASCAR events rather than in F1 Grand Prix.

A standing start is a more typical start to an F1 Grand Prix, with drivers starting in a stationary manner in their respective grid spots.
Which F1 Grand Prix have had a rolling start?
Last season, the Monaco 2022 Grand Prix had a rolling start, which was due to heavy rainfall.
Sergio Perez took top spot on the podium that day.
After several delays at the 2021 Belgium Grand Prix, a rolling start was again needed due to wet conditions.
The race was then red-flagged and forced to be suspended before the race officially began. More
