The Frenchman – who has been with Alpine since 2019 when they were called Renault – has picked up just six points from the opening five races, two fewer than new team-mate Pierre Gasly.
That is a significant drop off from last season when he accumulated 92 points and finished eighth in the drivers’ championship.
And Alpine sit sixth in the constructors standings, two places below their fourth-place in 2022.
Red Bull have been dominant in all five races this year, with Max Verstappen claiming three victories and team-mate Sergio Perez taking the other two.

Shakira was picked up from the back of her £16million Miami Beach mansion before cruising around Biscayne Bay.
The 46-year-old sported a fringed lilac bikini top and matching shorts, wearing her famous long wavy hair loose over her shoulders.
She was all smiles as she boarded the vessel which had an inflatable crocodile strapped to the top – and appeared to be greeted by Lewis.
The Mercedes driver, 38, was wearing a white cap, sunglasses, a black sleeveless top and checkerboard shorts – showing off his distinctive tattoos.

Miami is where Shakira now calls home following her bitter split from ex-Barcelona star Gerard Pique.
And their separation has set rumours swirling about Shakira’s love life.

But despite being seen hanging out with Lewis – The Sun Online understands the duo are just friends.
The pair had been spotted just days before having dinner together at the lavish restaurant Cipriani.

Lewis, the most successful F1 driver of all time, had been in town for the Miami Grand Prix over the weekend – finishing in 6th place.
Smiling at each other, Shakira appeared to join 92-time race winner Lewis and pals at his table in a short video snapped by a fan.
It comes after the singer was spotted mingling with Tom Cruise at the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday.
Shakira announced her separation form footballer Gerard Pique last May after spending 11 years together.
The Colombian singer-songwriter was reportedly “evicted” from her Barcelona home by Pique’s dad last month, sparking her move back to Miami.
The mum-of-two made no mention of the eviction order in the farewell message she posted on Instagram after being pictured leaving the Catalan capital with her two children to start a new life in Florida.

Shakira and Pique confirmed in November they had reached a child custody agreement after a marathon 12-hour meeting with their lawyers.
They signed the accord at a court in Barcelona the following month.
As part of the agreement Pique, now dating 24-year-old Catalan beauty Clara Chia, will spend holiday time with his children.
Shakira’s wish to move to Miami, where she used to live and where some of of her family are based, is understood to have been the sticking point in the former couple’s previous failure to strike an out-of-court settlement.
The singer came under fire in March after performing her diss track with Argentinian DJ Bizarrap, in which she blasts Pique and his new girlfriend, on the Jimmy Fallon late-night show earlier this month.
The singer’s explosive song, left little doubt that she was referring to her former partner and his younger lover.
In the track, she took a swipe at Clara’s age with the lyrics: “I’m worth two 22s. You traded a Ferrari for a Twingo, you traded a Rolex for a Casio.”
Pique responded to the song by turning up to work in an £8,000 Renault Twingo.
He also boasted that his new seven-a-side project the King’s League had landed a sponsorship deal with Casio – adding that the cheaper watch would “last a lifetime”.
Pique said in a subsequent interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais he was “very happy” following the dramatic changes in his life which have included the split with Shakira and retirement from football.

Michael Schumacher health update as ex-teammate says stricken star’s son Mick is ‘going through hell’

MICHAEL Schumacher’s son Mick must be going through hell over his dad’s health condition, the F1 legend’s former ex-teammate has said.Johnny Herbert – who partnered Schuey at Benetton in 1994 and 1995 – spoke out as mystery still surrounds the seven-time world champion.

The three-time F1 race winner described the struggle that Michael’s racer son Mick has faced not having his dad alongside him in the paddock.
But he hailed the young driver for handling the terrible situation “brilliantly”.
And he questioned whether the 24-year-old may have suffered under the pressure of his dad’s legacy.
Michael has not been seen or heard from in nearly 10 years as he continues to recover from a horrific ski crash.
    READ MORE OF SCHUMACHER
His family have worked hard to ensure privacy – even as Mick embarked on his own F1 career and rose through the ranks.
Herbert told betting firm Ice 36 that it “must be hell” for Mick.
“Michael Schumacher’s health is also very sad for Mick. It can’t be easy for Mick, because of what his dad achieved,” said Herbert.
“Being around your dad when you’re younger. Then of course his dad is not there to enjoy it and guide him.
    Most read in Motorsport
“There have been a lot of people who have helped Mick over the years, but I think it is a situation that he would have loved his dad to be there for him.”
Mick followed in his dad’s footsteps into F1 – but the young driver struggled and lost his race seat at the end of 2022 after a series of crashes for the Haas team.
He was dropped in favour of veteran driver Nico Hulkenberg for 2023 – and is now a reserve driver at Mercedes.
The German is backing up Sir Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, potentially stepping in for them if they have to miss a race.
Johnny said: “He has dealt with the situation brilliantly. There was so much media attention just because of who he was and is.
“Then the expectations of what his dad did and trying to live up to them. He was under a hell of a lot of pressure and did it get the better of him?
“Maybe. Did he do enough when he was up against Kevin Magnussen (at Haas)? Probably not. That’s why it didn’t work out.”
“He never created that opportunity for himself to continue as a racer.”
Johnny, now a respected pundit, however was confident that Mick can find his way back to the grid – especially if he gets a chance to shine at a Grand Prix.
“But there is still a chance an opportunity will open up and he will get that one-off race, like it did for Nyck de Vries, that might lead people to think, ‘Wow’,” said Johnny.
The Brit races in F1 from 1989 to 2000 – racing for teams including Lotus, Sauber, Stewart and Jaguar.
He won three races – including at the British Grand Prix in 1995.
And he partner Schuey as the German went on to win his first two world titles in ’94 and ’95.
Herbert last week also slammed German magazine Die Aktuelle which ran a disturbing AI-generated fake interview with his old pal Schumacher.
Michael was left in a medically induced coma after his accident while skiing off piste on December 29, 2013 – spending three months in hospital before being released home.
He is reported to have suffered a traumatic injury to his brain – but little other info has been released on his health.
The lack of official updates has left room for speculation and conflicting reports from “insiders” about his slow progress.
Reports have claimed he was in a vegetative state while others claimed he was awake and able to talk.
Some pals have criticised the family for not being more open – including Schumacher’s manager of 20 years, Willi Weber, and Schumacher’s boss at Mercedes, Nick Fry.
The F1 legend was a seven-time-world champion – winning five times for Ferrari and twice for Benetton – and is regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
He raced from 1991 to 2006, and again from 2010 to 2012, winning 91 races.
His “second career” saw him race with the returning Mercedes team when they bought out Brawn GP at the end of 2009.

A star-studded grid including film stars Tom Cruise and Vin Diesel, plus tennis star Roger Federer, and a host of influencers, were all in attendance for the latest F1 race.
However, now the main talking point to emerge from it is an incident which occurred on lap five.
An individual, who is believed to have been a local marshall, walked out in front British star Lando Norris’s McLaren as he entered the pits.
A clip of the near fatal miss was uploaded to Sky Sports’ F1 website but has now been removed.

An FIA spokesman confirmed: “We are aware of the incident and looking into it with local organisers.”
The shock incident comes just a week after Alpine driver Esteban Ocon had to brake fast to avoid running over dozens of people that were crossing the pit-lane entrance during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
The Frenchman, who described it as a potential “disaster”, came in for a tyre change on the final lap.
The FIA investigated that also and then updated their regulations ahead of the Miami spectacle.

Lewis Hamilton won’t leave Mercedes despite team struggles as he ‘has no other options’ claims ex-F1 star

LEWIS HAMILTON won’t leave Mercedes as there are no other viable options, claims Jensen Button. The seven-time world champion is set to be out of contract with the Silver Arrows at the end of the season.
Lewis Hamilton came sixth in Sunday’s Miami GPCredit: Splash
While they are reportedly working on a new deal, Hamilton has been linked with a sensational Mercedes exit – with Ferrari having been mentioned.
But Button, Hamilton’s former McLaren team-mate, doesn’t think a switch to the Scuderia, or anywhere for that matter, makes sense.
While appearing on Sky Sports over the weekend, Button said of Hamilton: “Well, he’s loyal, but I also don’t think he’s got the options that he would want.
“I don’t really think he would have the option at Red Bull – I don’t think he would be the right fit alongside Max [Verstappen].

“I don’t think he’d be at Ferrari. Aston Martin? Definitely won’t be going to Aston Martin, they’ve got two seats that are going to be filled there for a little while.”
Button, a world champion in 2009, also thinks that going through difficult times together could strengthen the bond between Mercedes and Hamilton.
The 43-year-old added: “I think his future will be at Mercedes but he is also a loyal character and it’s good to see him going through some tough times with that team.
“I think they will come out the other side together. You know, it’s a rollercoaster in Formula 1, especially when you’ve been on top for that long, there’s going to be a dip.

“But if you can stay with that team, they will rise to the top again, and he’s not going to retire.”
Hamilton squashed retirement talk while chatting to ESPN, claiming that he is still in his prime.
But he did admit that he’d imagined himself driving for another team, albeit while calling Mercedes “home”.
He said: “I’d be lying if I said I’d never thought about ending my career anywhere else.
“I started at McLaren, I’d like to think I’ll always be a part of the McLaren family, I started there when I was 13-years-old [as a junior driver], so I thought about what it would look like if I was at McLaren one day.
“I thought about and watched the Ferrari drivers on the screens at the track and of course, you wonder what it would be like to be in red… But then I go to my team, to Mercedes, and this is my home.
“I’m happy where I am. I haven’t signed a contract yet, but we are working on one.”
Hamilton came sixth in Sunday’s Miami GP, having started 13th on the grid.
He is fourth in the driver standings, already 63 points behind Verstappen in the vastly superior Red Bull car.

Lewis Hamilton defends F1 Miami GP glitz… but why should it be treated any differently to Silverstone and Co?

LEWIS HAMILTON has leapt to the defence of F1’s pre-race razzmatazz, saying it is good new things are being tried to attract fans.A number of drivers were critical of the introductions from rapper LL Cool J at Sunday’s Miami GP, while music producer will.i.am conducted an orchestra on the grid.

It was over-the-top and a few drivers complained about standing around in the heat for too long — and fans blasted the stunt as tacky.
But Hamilton, 38, said: “It is cool the sport is continuously growing and evolving and not doing the same stuff.
“They are trying to do things to improve the show. I mean, I grew up listening to LL Cool J and now he’s there.
“You look over and you have will.i.am, who is an incredible artist. I thought it was cool.”

I actually like the idea of a driver introduction. Fans rarely get to see them without their crash helmets on.
Plus, I don’t really get the fuss when it is made part of the schedule. The drivers cannot complain they did not know it was happening.
But if this is to be a new part of the show, then it needs to be applied to all races.
As Fernando Alonso pointed out in his post-race comments, why should Miami fans be treated any differently to those in Mexico City or Silverstone?

F1 needs to engage more with the spectators and give drivers a profile, and this is a good opportunity to do that.
I’m less a fan of the ridiculous song and video from will.i.am and Lil Wayne which F1 have commissioned.
Called “The Formula” it features laughable lyrics such as “you a small fry, need ketchup, fall behind or you can catch up” — but then it is not aimed at me.
As for the whole Miami GP experience? It seems as though organisers learned from the previous year and made substantial changes to enhance the event, which was a 90,000 sell-out on both Saturday and Sunday, so they must be doing something right.
Mitch Clemence had a memorable Miami Grand Prix — but do not worry if you have not heard of him.
An ESPN camera crew quizzed six fans at the race how they thought the “rookie” would do. Four of the six predicted a good performance for the completely bogus name the crew had made up.

    MIAMI HEAT

The two clashed at the Sao Paulo E-Prix, where Dennis labelled his fellow Brit a “plonker” for punting him out of the race.

“We are both grown men — and we don’t really want to have these feuds any more.
“It is in the past, I made a mistake, that’s it, I want to move on.”
