Inside abandoned F1 track dubbed ‘Green Hell’ that went around a VOLCANO but shut because it was too dangerous

A HELLISH F1 track at the base of a volcano was abandoned after several serious incidents.Located near the mountains of Clermont-Ferrand in central France, the circuit first played host to the French Grand Prix in 1965.

The Circuit de Charade – better known by many as Clermont-Ferrand  – is something of an oddity nowadays.
Nicknamed the “Green Hell of France” after Germany’s Nurburgring, this 50 turn track was absolutely terrifying.
The 8km abandoned route – which twists around the extinct Puy du Charade volcano – catapults you into the good old days of motorsport.
Despite it’s harsh turns and lack of run-out zones, the British racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart managed to win two out of the four GPs held there.

But an unusual accident on the circuit also ended the career of the renowned Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko.
The Austrian driver was hit in the head by a dark volcanic rock thrown up by the car in front, driven by Bengt Peterson.
The stone pierced the visor of Marko, permanently blinding him in one eye.
Years before in 1959, British F2 racer Ivor Bueb lost his life during a race after being thrown from his car.

The treacherous turns and volcanic debris littering the track were concluded as the main cause of the deadly crash.
As years went by the circuit started to become a safety hazard to spectators.
As a result, Formula One left Clermont-Ferrand and never returned.
Although a shorter version of the track was unveiled in 1989 and again in 2000, it never returned to its former glory.
Today, the Circuit de Charade offers training days, racing schools and classic car events.
In December 2020 the Departmental Council of Puy-de-Dôme unveiled a new plan to revitalise the circuit and safeguard its future as a centre for sport cars.

F1 legend Lewis Hamilton has a £80k EQS electric Mercedes which goes 0-60mph in 4.5 secs and has holographic lights

LEWIS HAMILTON showed off his stunning electric motor – the Mercedes EQS.Seven-time Formula 1 champ Hamilton talked up his decision to go green in a bid to protect the environment.
Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton poses next to his Mercedes EQS
The F1 champ says he is ‘working closely’ with Mercedes to move towards a more electric fleet
The EQS, which was announced in 2018, is part of the two-car garage the Merc racer is sticking to off the track.
Pairing the £80,000 saloon with a Smart car, Hamilton, 38, said he has offset the carbon footprint of his ENTIRE F1 career.
Yet the EQS still packs a punch, going from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds with 470bhp generated by a 350 kW electric motor.
Mercedes reckon a fully-charged EQS can even manage a range of 435 miles.

Naturally, it is also packed full of toys including holographic headlights, a rear ‘lightbelt’ of over 200 LEDs, and ambient dashboard lighting.
Posting a picture of himself beside the car, Hamilton wrote on Instagram back in September 2020: “Recently I’ve been making many changes in my life to reduce my impact on the environment.
“The first step in this journey was to understand my personal impact on the planet so I could make changes to improve it.
“Since then, I have offset my carbon footprint from my Formula 1 career dating back to 2007, I have reduced travel where possible, I have gone plant-based and outside of the track, I try to use electric cars wherever possible.

“I also want to use my position as a racing driver to enforce positive and permanent change, which is why I’m working closely with Mercedes to slowly move their fleet of cars towards electric.
“This is my new dream car, the new EQS fully electric Mercedes.
“It’s difficult to always be perfect when we go about our daily lives, but I’m continuing to learn how to be better and I’m committed to staying educated and informed so I can play my part.
“Small steps lead to big change, so it’s important we all take a moment to understand our footprint and the small changes we can make in our everyday lives to put our planet first.
“The last step for me will be when I step away from this sport and can focus fully on helping heal the world to provide a better future for our kids and our kids’ kids.” More

Lewis Hamilton should only go to Ferrari if they almost DOUBLE his salary in mammoth offer claims F1 expert

LEWIS HAMILTON should not move to Ferrari unless they DOUBLE his salary. That is the view of Formula One expert Peter Windsor.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton is out of contract at the end of the season, sparking rumours he could leave Mercedes.
Ferrari have been earmarked as his next destination, with the Mail reporting there has been “close contact” between Hamilton and Scuderia president John Elkann.
Hamilton, 38, reportedly earns a whopping £45million-a-year with the Brackley-based constructor, making him one of the highest-paid drivers on the grid.
The Mail’s report adds Ferrari and Mercedes have the financial muscle to offer similar packages at around £40m, helped by drivers falling outside of F1’s new budget cap.
    READ MORE ON HAMILTON
However, Windsor – an award-winning F1 journalist and former manager at both Williams and Ferrari – believes the Brit should only take Ferrari’s offer if the terms are DOUBLED.
Speaking on a YouTube live stream, he said: “I’ve seen a few numbers bandied around. One was £40m.
“If I was Lewis Hamilton, I’d be going for a lot more than £40m because you could argue that Lewis, with the Ferrari brand and what he could do for the Ferrari brand, should be thinking in terms of at least £50m just for PR and brand turnaround.
“And then how much is he worth as a driver, as a pure race driver? You’d have to say £25-30m.

Peter Windsor believes a Hamilton-Ferrari deal should be worth at least £80millionCredit: Getty

“£40m? I would say about £80m would be more logical. And if they’re not going to pay that sort of money, I don’t think he should do it.”
In terms of performance, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have been irrepressible in earning race wins this season, with Verstappen winning four – including the Monaco Grand Prix – and Perez two.
As a result, race wins have been hard to come by. Though Hamilton has managed to squeeze one podium in so far this season and he is yet to finish below P6.
However, Mercedes will be hoping their fortunes will change quickly after implementing £1m worth of upgrades.
Meanwhile, despite strong one-lap pace, Ferrari have also claimed just a single podium spot through Charles Leclerc – who hinted Hamilton was his ideal team-mate.
Windsor continued: “I think he should stay at Mercedes and look for some long-term deal at Mercedes and continue.
“Because what you don’t want to do if you’re Lewis Hamilton is leave Mercedes just as they’re going to be competitive because the odds are, having been uncompetitive for so long, that a team that big and that good will eventually find a way.
“That’s another issue for Lewis, so he may well stay where he is and it could be the money that decides it.
Complete F1 2023 race calendar – details on every Grand Prix this year

“If I was managing Lewis and it was £40m, I’d say: ‘Nah, stay where you are.’
“Ferrari [is a] huge brand for Lewis Hamilton to put his name to. Massive. And that’s [worth] a lot more than a £40m deal in my view.”
He then added: “If Lewis is going to Ferrari, it’s such a big unknown in terms of how competitive that car would be that, if I was Lewis, I wouldn’t go for less than £80m.
“I did say £100m to a mate the other day and he said: ‘That’s a bit much, isn’t it?’ I said: ‘OK, let’s bring it down to £80m…’
“But £40m? You’ve got to be joking. If he does it for £40m, hats off to him because it means he’s just doing it for the love of the sport.
“I’m not decrying the enormity of £40m, but I’m just saying for that he might as well stay at Mercedes really.”
The Spanish GP is up next for Hamilton and Co.
Before Verstappen won last year’s race, Hamilton had won five in a row around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
