Max Verstappen WINS Spanish GP as Lewis Hamilton comes second in new Mercedes car in promising sign

MERCEDES enjoyed their best result of the season to give some hope of breaking Max Verstappen’s F1 stranglehold. The Red Bull man romped to his fifth win in the opening seven races – with all of this season’s grands prix being won by the Milton-Keynes based team.

But there is renewed optimism that the Silver Arrows’ revised car design can help deliver them a much needed boost in the form of a victory.
While Verstappen was comfortably quickest here in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton was second and George Russell was third.
Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez was fourth, despite having started in 11th place, one spot ahead of Russell, who had clashed with Hamilton during qualifying.
Verstappen got a good start as did Hamilton, who moved up a place when he passed Lando Norris into the first corner.

But as they squeezed into Turn Two, Norris went into the back of Hamilton’s Mercedes causing damage to his own car.
Norris was forced to pit while the contact shuffled Hamilton out of place and allowed Lance Stroll to move into third place.
The kerfuffle behind him was of no interest to Verstappen, who had opened up a two-second lead after only four laps.
Despite his first-lap set back, Hamilton pulled back into third place as he went around Stroll into turn one on lap eight.

Russell was also making in-roads and he passed Esteban Ocon to move into fifth on lap 11.
Early pitstops for Carlos Sainz and Stroll moved Hamilton and Russell into second and third place respectively.
Hamilton made his pitstop at the end of lap 24 while Russell made his stop a lap later.
Verstappen was the second to last driver to pit on lap 27, but he had built up such an advantage that when he returned to the track, he was still leading the race.
Hamilton powered his way into second with a straight-forward overtake on Sainz into Turn One on lap 35.
And it was not long before Russell was back into third place when he passed the Spaniard who was beginning to drop like a stone.
It was encouraging for the Mercedes duo, although Hamilton was still 16 seconds adrift of runaway leader Verstappen while Russell was a further 10 seconds behind.
Mercedes pitted both drivers for fresh tyres leaving them free to hunt down Verstappen, who was on the hard tyre.
But the Red Bull man had such a lead he was again able to make his own pitstop to preserve his lead.
In the final few laps, he came close to earning a five-second time penalty for running wide and exceeding track limits.

Despite warnings from his race engineer to slow down and avoid a penalty, he ignored the instructions to set the fastest lap to earn the bonus point.
He then coasted home to a comfortable 24 second lead over Hamilton and opened up a whopping 53 point lead in the championship over Perez.

Inside abandoned F1 track left frozen in time with old sponsors still lining road despite last race being 57 YEARS AGO

AN ABANDONED F1 track has been frozen in time almost six decades on from its last race. And the evidence of its existence still hangs over the grandstands in a spooky nod to a bygone era.

The circuit was used in F1 from 1950 to 1966Credit: Getty
The faded and torn sponsorship signs have remained painted along the public road since the last GP was held there in 1966.
Jack Brabham won the 1966 race – in a car created by himself and bearing his name ‘Brabham-Repco’ – during his dominant period in F1.
But despite the popularity of the track, F1 bosses decided to relocate the French GP the following year due to high costs.
The track in question is…the Reims-Gueux circuit in the Champagne region of France.
    READ MORE ON SPORT
The circuit was 7.8 km in length and made up of secondary roads and a section of the N 31.
While its long straights were shorter than Le Mans’ famous Mulsanne, it became a regular venue for high speed slip streaming battles.
After 1966, the track was used for national races until 1972 when the local mayor ordered the demolition of the buildings to start.
Most of the circuit returned to public roads and the old pit-buildings slowly started to crumble.

But a decade later, a group of enthusiasts restored the buildings directly around the start line.
The largely abandoned venue has since been used in photoshoots and can be driven past and enjoyed today.
Since 2002 the foundation “Amis du Circuit de Gueux” (Friends of the Reims-Gueux Circuit) has worked on restoring the structures and obtained a guarantee that nothing would be demolished in the future.

Norris, 23, currently sits 11th in the driver standings but will be hoping to climb up the rankings in today’s Spanish Grand Prix.
His best ever finish in a F1 campaign came in 2021 when he finished sixth and he has been on the podium on six occasions but is still waiting for his first win.
Away from the track, the pedal-to-the-metal speedster has been rumoured to be dating footballer Joao Felix’s ex.
The forward’s loan spell at Chelsea has coincided with confirmation he and stunning girlfriend Margarida Corceiro are no longer together.
Actress and model Margarida said they would remain friends in an emotional social media post but revealed they had put an end to their four-year romance “some time ago.”
Norris recently said that he’s “got nothing to hide” after being snapped with the Portuguese beauty.
The McLaren F1 ace was pictured driving around with Margarida, 20, in Monaco.
He was quizzed by SunSport about the increased flak he’s copped on social media to which Norris replied: “I haven’t tried to hide anything when I’ve gone out to a restaurant. You are allowed to do whatever you want.
“I know that so many presumptions are made just because I’m seen with someone, which I find hilarious.
“If I wanted to hide something I feel I can hide it well — but I’m not trying to hide anything.

“At the end of the day, if I wanted my life to be more private I would say yes [it is harder to avoid scrutiny] but I don’t want to just stay in my house all day and sit behind a computer.
“But it seems I can’t have friends nowadays, can’t be seen with someone without somehow being in a relationship.”

Watch Lewis Hamilton’s CRASH with Mercedes team-mate George Russell as he slams ‘that’s really dangerous’

LEWIS HAMILTON and George Russell clashed on track during qualifying for the Spanish GP.It is the first time the two have made contact – with Russell accepting he was to blame for driving into his Mercedes team-mate.

While Russell was eliminated from qualifying in the second session, Hamilton will start the Spanish GP in fifth place.
But he was still half a second off the pace of pole-sitter Max Verstappen, who continued to blow away the rest of the field.
The Dutchman’s pace was so superior he was comfortable to abort his final flying lap, despite looking like he would better his provisional pole.
Hamilton and Russell’s flashpoint happened on the way down to Turn One with Russell driving into his team-mate.

The contact broke off a piece of Hamilton’s front wing and will no doubt spark off an internal investigation.
But this was a routine pole for the championship leader, who looks untouchable.
Verstappen said: “The car was really good. It was initially tricky with the weather but it started to dry out and the car was on rails.”
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will start in second place with McLaren’s Lando Norris qualifying in third place, his best starting position of the season.

There were early spins for Valtteri Bottas and Alex Albon as the drivers initially struggled with the damp track on slick tyres.
The FIA took no chances to stop the session when Albon went off, sending stones scattering all over the track.
But that was not an excuse for another woeful performance from Ferrari, who saw Charles Leclerc qualify down in second-to-last place.
While he initially complained of problems with his car’s set up, Leclerc was then held up at the weighbridge and ultimately ran out of time to set a quick lap time on the drying track.
The second qualifying session saw two more scalps as Russell was eliminated after his clash with Hamilton.
Russell was given the boot from Q2 and will start in 12th place after labelling his performance as “nowhere”.
The Mercedes man was also joined by Sergio Perez as his title challenge continues to wilt at an alarming rate.
The Mexican made an unforced error and ran into the gravel and eventually paid the price after he was eliminated and will start outside the top 10 in 11th place. More

I visited Lewis Hamilton’s vegan burger chain and tried the plant-based patties – they take pole position over McDonalds

VEGAN substitutes for fast-food favourites have become a booming market over the last decade.Millions of hungry health and animal-conscious people around the globe have made the decision to do away with meat and eat ethically-sourced replacements.
Sir Lewis Hamilton and acting great Leonardo DiCaprio invested in Neat Burger – which has branches in the UK and USACredit: Getty

As such, the market for vegan fast food alternatives has exploded over the last few years.
Several celebrities and athletes have embraced the plant-based lifestyle, including Formula One icon Lewis Hamilton – who stopped eating meat in 2017.
And the Stevenage speedster drove headfirst into the market at breakneck speed four years ago with a major investment in a meat-free burger chain – Neat Burger.
Hamilton – along with Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio – invested a huge amount of capital in the London-based chain to “make plant-based eating more accessible to everyone.”
    READ MORE IN F1
And it’s now valued at a whopping £80MILLION following investment from former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Neat Burger’s alternatives to your regular burgers have received rave reviews.
So much so, that I – perhaps the biggest meat-lover on the planet – thought I’d see what all the hype was about.
So I popped along to the chain’s Canary Wharf branch on my lunch break to broaden my horizons and my pallet.

I was immediately impressed by the look of the restaurant, which had a colour scheme straight out of Miami Vice.
In keeping with the new age of fast food restuarant, Neat Burger has done away with traditional waiters in favour of electronic self-service menus.

And it was there I was able to select what looked to be the closest thing to a double cheeseburger – my go-to when I want to indulge in a burger.
That came in the form of the ‘Smash Daddy’ burger, which is comprised of two ‘Neat’ patties, onions and is covered with melted cheese.
The burger – which I upgraded to a meal deal for a reasonably priced £11.99 – was topped off with a generous slathering of Neat, mustard and stack sauce.
The brightly-coloured dine-in area served as the perfect distraction from the questions swirling through my head as I patiently waited for the arrival of my first-ever order of vegan food
Why am I trying this? What I ordered looks like a burger, but will it taste like one?
And, most importantly, will it live up to the hype?
It didn’t take long – less than ten minutes in fact – for my questions to be answered.
The presentation of the burger and chips were better than that of most fast-food chains.
And much to my surprise, the taste was exactly the same – if not better than most traditional burgers.

I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and consistency of the burgerCredit: SUNSPORT
As a once regular frequenter of McDonald’s to cure my hangovers of yesteryear, I know a thing or two about fast-food burgers.
So I’m very well placed to say it blows Maccies’ iconic and beloved cheeseburger out of the water – and then some.
A tidal wave of flavours hit me seconds after my gnashers cut through the delectable brioche bun and pierced the soft and tender patty.
To get a true taste for the patty – the combination of mung beans, quinoa, and chickpeas – I broke off and nibbled on a small sauce-less morsel.
That small and soft bite accentuated the wave of flavours and amazing texture I experienced just a few moments earlier.
I went into my maiden indulgence of vegan food adamant that no plant-based alternative could ever replicate the taste of a ‘real’ burger or convince me to consume less meat.
But I’ll happily admit that I’ll no longer pigheadedly – pardon the pun – close myself off to vegan alternatives.

My only complaint, however, was the amount of salt on the skinny fries which accompanied the delicious burger – although that’s easily rectifiable.
For those of you who have dedicated yourself to the vegan lifestyle, or if you’re a burger aficionado who wants to switch things up, I can safely say the Hamilton-backed burger joints are the ideal pit stop for some quick grub. More
