      Lewis Hamilton bags podium finish as Max Verstappen puts on Canadian GP clinic to move level with legend Ayrton Senna

      MAX VERSTAPPEN notched up Red Bull’s 100th Formula One win with yet another crushing display of dominance.Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso traded places in second and third place with the Spaniard crossing the line ahead of the Brit, despite nursing a brake problem.

      Nevertheless, Hamilton was pleased with third as it marks another step with the team’s recovery as he now has back-to-back podiums.
      He said over the team’s radio: “That was a tough, tough race. Great job today. Great job this weekend. Let’s keep this consistency.”
      He later added: “It has been a great weekend for us, we are slowly chipping away and have some more updates coming.
      “It was quite an honour to be up there with two world champions and I was excited to be in that mix.

      “Unfortunately we didn’t have the pace. We knew this would not be our circuit as we  are struggling in the low-speed corners.
      “We have a lot of work to do to add downforce to the car, but we will get there. Our pace was closer and we are going in the right direction.”
      It was the 41st victory of Verstappen’s career as he moved level with the great Ayrton Senna.
      He said: “I am very happy right now. It was not a very straight forward race, we were sliding around quite a bit but to win again, the 100th Grand Prix for the team is incredible.

      “It is amazing, I never expected to be on these numbers myself, so we keep going.”
      The Dutchman was dominant, leading from the start, and held on the first place to make it a hat-trick of consecutive clean sweeps.
      He has now taken pole, led every lap and taken the win in the last three races in Monaco, Barcelona and now Canada.
      It was all so easy that at one point he laughed over the team’s radio saying how he “almost knocked himself out on the kerb”.
      Hamilton made a fantastic start and quickly leapfrogged Alonso into second place going into the first turn on lap one.
      However, the Mercedes man was unable to catch Verstappen, who was also quick off the line to hold his place at the front.
      Further back Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz had a good battle for 11th which forced Kevin Magnussen to take evasive action and dart over the grass.
      But George Russell was not so fortunate as he was launched off the sausage kerbs and into the barriers at turn four on lap 12.
      It was a big impact and saw the race steward deploy the safety car due to the debris on track.
      Somehow Russell made it back to the pits and his Mercedes team patched up his car and sent him back out on track, albeit in last place.

      The safety car period allowed the front-running drivers to make a pitstop for tyres as Verstappen darted in from the front. Hamilton and Alonso also followed.
      But due to a slow stop from Mercedes, the Brit came close to driving into the Spaniard, who was already back on his way down the pitlane.
      Both escaped punishment from the FIA despite the near miss and they set about trying to eat into Verstappen’s lead.
      Alonso’s quicker Aston Martin allowed him to keep close to Hamilton and he eventually made his pass on lap 23.
      With the benefit of DRS he swooped past the Brit in to turn one and into second place as he started opening a small gap over the Mercedes man.
      Hamilton rolled the dice by pitting on lap 40 for medium tyres and Aston responded by calling in Alonso a lap later to cover off the threat of Hamilton getting passed.
      Red Bull also called in Verstappen for new tyres on lap but had such an advantage he kept his place running in first.
      Russell was eventually forced to retire 15 laps from the end when the damage caused by his earlier smash into the barriers caught up with him.

      He trundled down the pitlane and was rolled back into the garage by his mechanics as he apologised to the team for his accident on lap 12.

      FANS were left in stitches when Toto Wolff mocked Fernando Alonso at the Canadian GP.Alonso, 41, nearly collided with Lewis Hamilton during a pit stop.

      Both veteran drivers came in when the safety car was called following George Russell’s lap-12 collision with a wall.
      After Aston Martin’s quicker pit stop, Alonso nearly got out ahead of Hamilton.
      But the seven-time world champion pulled out just ahead of him.
      This caused the Spaniard to dramatically wave his steering wheel, although stewards determined that no action was required following an investigation.

      Following the incident, Wolff mimicked how he felt Alonso had exaggerated his steering movements.
      The 51-year-old’s demonstration had fans watching on at home in stitches.
      Watching the moment back, one Twitter user wrote: “He is the funniest guy ever.”
      While a second tweeted: “Haahahhahahahha Fernando don’t know what else to do.”

      With Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton on the podium there were some serious world titles on show.
      With 23 wins (11 driver and 12 constructor), Adrian Newey was in good company.
      All three of these drivers will be looking to add to those figures but Max Verstappen is in pole position to do just that this season.

      Fernando Alonso racked up more points for Aston Martin as he delivers a season they could not have dreamed of.
      With some issue with the rear brakes towards the end of the race, the Spaniard did brilliantly to hold off Lewis Hamilton.
      If he had not had to coast for so long, he could of potentially challenged Verstappen more for the win.

      Red Bull secure another victory
      Max Verstappen wins the Canadian Grand Prix for a second year in a row.
      The only time anybody could anywhere near him was when the safety car came out and the Dutch driver held his never to ensure this race was his.
      That is 20 wins out of his last 25 races.

      Max Verstappen wins Canadian Grand Prix
      Lap 69/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Norris is worried about the rear tail of Ocon’s car as it wobbles from side to side.
      He is worried about it coming off and causing a bad crash.
      Verstappen now leads Alonso by 9.5 seconds while the Spaniard leads Hamilton by 3.1 seconds.
      Lap 67/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Verstappen catches a kerb hard as he loses the handling a bit on the chicane and tells his team via comms ‘I almost knocked myself out on that kerb ha ha’.
      It goes to show you are only one mistake away from a disaster.
      Meanwhile Alonso has built up a lead of 3.1 seconds since he has been allowed to use his rear brakes a lot more.
      Lap 65/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      It seems that Aston Martin are willing to let Alonso to drive the car as he wants again now.
      The team tell him the gap between him and Hamilton to which the Spaniard replies ‘no problem, leave it to me’.
      Alonso has opened the gap up to 2.8 seconds and seems like he is going to hold the Mercedes off.

      Lap 63/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Max Verstappen leads by 8.1 seconds and is heading towards another victory.
      The scrap between Alonso and Hamilton is the one to watch.
      As it stands the Spaniard is managing to hold him off as he gets his lead to 2.1 seconds.
      Lap 61/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Lewis Hamilton is right on the tail of Fernando Alonso, only 1.5 seconds behind the Aston Martin.
      He has his sights set on second place now.
      Alonso must feel he is driving with one hand behind his back with his team ordering him to coast the car.
      Lap 59/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Alonso may not be able to resist Hamilton with DRS.
      His engineers are telling him to coast the car to ensure they finish the race.
      No news as to why they are giving him these orders and what is wrong with the car.
      Lap 57/70 – Verstappen leads, Russell retires
      Fernando Alonso seems to be having to look after his tyres for the remainder of this race.
      Lewis Hamilton has managed to half the gap between the two.
      George Russell is forced to retire for the second time this season.
      Lap 55/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Sainz now leads Perez by 6.2 seconds.
      Leclerc is 4.5 seconds ahead of the other Ferrari.
      Russell is told via comms that he may need to retire the car.

      Lap 53/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Lewis Hamilton will have to put in a good drive if he is hoping to push forward for second place.
      He is only gaining fractions of a second on Alonso who is still out there on hard tyres.
      Both of the Ferraris opted to stay out on hard tyres also.
      Lap 51/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Verstappen has built a 6.1 second lead over Alonso.
      Hamilton continues to put in fast laps in the Mercedes.
      The Dutch driver is also on the medium tyres now.
      Lap 49/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Leclerc has a 3.4 second lead on team mate Sainz.
      Whether the Ferrari teams will look to take one another or work as a team for points remains to be seen.
      Verstappen is still increasing his lead on the Aston Martin.
      Lap 47/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Verstappen now leads second placed Alonso by 5.4 seconds.
      Providing the Dutch man does not make any errors you would expect him to cruise to victory today.
      Hamilton is now 3.2 seconds behind the Spaniards.
      Lap 45/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Lewis Hamilton has now clocked the fastest lap of the day.
      With the fuel loads going down we will see the lap times get faster between now and the end of the race.
      It is all pretty tight between second and sixth.
      Russell has made his way back up to eighth place after being last following his collision with the wall.

      Verstappen is also given the ‘box, box’ signal.
      He comes back out to re-establish his lead, having a 4.2 second lead over Alonso.
      The Spaniard is now 5.4 second lead on the Mercedes.
      Lap 41/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Perez manages to take Albon on the straight as the might of the Red Bull is just too much for him.
      Hamilton heads into the pits and changes onto the medium tyres.
      In the top nine places, Hamilton is the only driver to have pitted twice.
      Aston Martin give the ‘box, box’ signal to Alonso in reaction to Mercedes’ pit stop.
      Lap 39/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Sergio Perez heads into the pits.
      He re-enters the track in sixth place.
      Lance Stroll is given a 5 second penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
      Meanwhile Carlos Sainz takes his first pit stop of the race and heads back onto the track in fifth place.
      Lap 37/70 – Verstappen leads, Alonso second
      Magnussen and De Vries have a coming together and both head off the track into the safety run off.
      A momentary yellow flag is applied as the two cars have to reverse back onto the track.
      Only Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are out on the track on medium tyres with every other car on the hard tyres.

      And despite the pair driving in the same team, two-time champion Verstappen declared he would “not be happy” if he was Perez.
      It comes after under-fire Perez failed to make Q3 for the third time in a row, having crashed out in Q1 at Monaco and lacking pace in Spain.
      Changeable conditions in Montreal on Saturday saw Perez cock up his tyre strategy as rivals benefitted from an earlier switch onto slick tyres in Q2.
      The drivers title looks likely to head to Verstappen for the third time in a row, with no driver in F1 history having overturned a 53-point deficit.

      Speaking on Perez’s performance ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen remarked: “Well, if I hadn’t been there it would have looked very different for Red Bull.
      “I wouldn’t be happy with not making Q3 three times in a row. I’m not concerned about it either.
      “I’m busy enough on my side of the garage getting everything in order. I pay all my attention to that.
      “The team must be working on that maybe, but you have to ask them.

      Grosjean almost forced the Team Penske’s driver onto the grass as Power attempted to overtake into a gap initially left by the Frenchman.
      However, despite making no contact with Grosjean, Power’s anger exploded after a crash with six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon.
      Dixon had let former Haas and Lotus F1 driver Grosjean past before moving over to completely block Power, who he had not seen.
      The collision saw the pair crash into the barriers, with Power confronting Dixon trackside following the incident.

      Power did not hold back in his interview afterwards as he lambasted both Dixon and Grosjean.
      He said: “This track’s terrible when you go off, they do a terrible job here.
      “They need to pick up their game, anywhere you go off you almost break your back every time. I’ve done it a couple of times this weekend, so they need a kick in the butt for this place.
      “Just pissed about what Dixon did this morning, just ruined our whole weekend, it was just a terrible move…

      Lewis Hamilton hopes of Canadian GP pole are a wash out as Max Verstappen fronts the grid after rain-lashed qualifying

      LEWIS HAMILTON’s hopes of taking the fight to Max Verstappen were washed out as the Red Bull man took pole for Sunday’s Canadian GP.The Dutchman timed it beautifully as he set his quickest lap before rain lashed down in Montreal.

      The final session was stopped after Oscar Piastri crashed out, but when it restarted it was simply too wet for the drivers to better their lap times.
      It cost Hamilton, who will start in fourth alongside his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who qualified in fifth.
      Hamilton said: “It was a good result. Most people probably underestimated just how hard it was out there for everybody.
      “It’s very tricky to keep it on track and deliver when the time comes. It was very slippery and difficult to generate temperature in the tyres.

      “But I’m grateful for the result for George and I and hopefully from there we can move forwards [in the race].
      “But we are ahead of the Ferraris, Max will be gone most likely, but if I can hold on to Fernando Alonso and give him hell, that’s what I’ll do.”
      Verstappen, who is now going for his 41st win in F1 which would equal Ayrton Senna’s total, said: “It was completely wet but the car improved and you have to stay on top of the conditions.
      “It was super slippery but we made the right calls at the right time. I like driving in the wet, I come from Holland, we are used to it.”

      Nico Hulkenberg was the shock result of the day as he qualified in second place alongside Verstappen as he too benefitted from setting a lap time before the heavens opened.
      The Haas man added: “It was a wild quali, with crazy conditions around here with the walls so close, but it was fun. Obviously unexpected but everyone is happy.
      “In this weather is it a lot about the communication and radio calls and seeing what the other teams are doing but it worked out pretty well.”
      Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was third and said: “It was a tricky qualifying in choosing the right tyre at the right time.”

      However, it was another horrendous mess from Ferrari as Charles Leclerc missed the top 10 shootout for the second time running.
      Ferrari cocked-up their strategy in Barcelona and they did the same in Montreal as they reacted too slowly to the rain.
      And Red Bull’s under-fire Mexican Sergio Perez was also given the boot from Q2 as he did little to ease the pressure building on him as he continued to be trounced by Verstappen.
      Pierre Gasly was the biggest casualty from FP1 as the Alpine driver was clearly left frustrated at failing to reach the top 15.
      The Frenchman lashed out in his cockpit as he was blocked on his hot lap by Carlos Sainz, which is likely to earn the Spaniard a penalty.

      Not that is much help to Gasly, who shouted over the team radio: “He should be banned for such a thing! I am going at 300 [kmh].”
      Sainz had only just made it into qualifying after crashing his car during final practice, causing damage to the front and back of his car as he spun into the barriers. More

      Hamilton, who is closing in on a two-year contract worth £100 million, now has reason to be optimistic that he will be in position to challenge Max Verstappen next season.
      Merc’s technical director James Allison said: “Can this car become competitive enough to win a race this year? I’d say with the following wind yes it can.
      “Can we, if we do the right things over the remainder of this year and across the years, can we be in a championship fight for the following year? Even more yes.”
      Allison’s comments will be welcome news to Hamilton, who has not won a race since the 2021 Saudi Arabia GP.

      The team had struggled with the design of their car and were forced to scrap it after qualifying at the Bahrain GP at the first race of the season.
      Hamilton, who is eyeing up a role as Merc’s ambassador for when he quits F1, delivered a positive option of the team’s upgrades, which have been introduced since the Monaco GP.
      Speaking at the Canadian GP, Hamilton said: “I’m definitely feeling the improvements we felt in Monaco, I’m feeling them here.
      “I love driving this track. It’s mega. From the moment you leave the pit lane you’re like, ‘Yeah, this is wicked!’

      “We’ve been making progress in the car. Last race, we’ve all been buzzing back at the factory, the whole team has this new energy and kind of feel that we’ve got a North Star – we know where we’re going and how to get there.”
      However, the drop in temperatures caused Mercedes to struggle in the wet ahead of qualifying.
      Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz has come in for more criticism after he crashed out in Montreal.
      The Spaniard was also hauled in to see the stewards for blocking Alex Albon during FP3.

      Sainz’s miserable run was halted when he crashed into the barrier at turn one, bringing out the red flags.
      He climbed from the car unscathed but the pressure is building on Sainz, who sixth in the championship.
