Michael Schumacher update as close pal says stricken legend should be STRIPPED of controversial F1 title

MICHAEL Schumacher should be stripped of one of his world championships, one of his close friends has said.Veteran journalist Roger Benoit took aim at the stricken legend’s on-track record – despite the two being pals.

Benoit – who reconciled with Schumacher in 2011 after years of feuding – said he believes the ace should lose his 1994 F1 title.
Schumacher currently stands alongside Lewis Hamilton as one of only two seven-time world champions.
They are the joint most successful drivers in the history of F1.
The German won his titles in 94 and 95, before going on an incredible five-year winning streak between 2000 and 2004.
    READ MORE ON SCHUMACHER
Schumacher has however not been seen or heard since 2013 after suffering a catastrophic injury during a ski crash.
His family maintains strict privacy around his condition.
But for his pal Benoit, Schumacher’s first title is tainted after the racer’s infamous crash with Brit rival Damon Hill.
The two came together in the title decider, with Schumacher appearing to veer his Benetton into Hill’s chasing Williams.
    Most read in Motorsport
Benoit gave a wide-ranging interview about his friend to German publication Blick and insisted on calling him a “six-time champion”.
He was often critical of the driver during his career, but the two became pals after Schumacher’s return to the sport in 2010s.
“Of course I know that he was world champion seven times. But the 1994 title should actually be taken away from him because he only won it because of his foul on Damon Hill,” said Benoit.
But despite this, Benoit still hailed him as one of the “greatest of all time”.
“I always had respect for his performance. The way he worked at Ferrari was unique,” he said.
“He was regularly in the box until midnight, an unbelievable work attitude.
“And he still holds the record of 19 podium places in a row to this day.”
The two spent years not speaking before they reconciled after a chance meeting in the paddock at the Japanese GP in 2011.
“He walked past me. But after two meters he stopped, came back, hit my knee with his hand and said: ‘Let’s forget everything that once was. We’ll start from the beginning’,” said Benoit.
His comments come from ongoing controversy in F1 over retrospective championships.
Schumacher’s protege Felipe Massa is launching legal action to attempt to claim the 2008 title from Lewis Hamilton.
Massa believes he was robbed after the “Crashgate” scandal at the Singapore GP that year – something he believes unfairly cost him the title.
And meanwhile, there is ongoing lobbying from fans and controversy over the ending of the 2021 season, where Max Verstappen passed Hamilton on the final lap to win the title.
F1 bosses admitted “human error” meant the rules were not applied in the correct way during a final safety car period – potentially costing Hamilton his eighth world title.
Schumacher’s pal Benoit’s urging would see Schumacher drop down to six titles – and Hamilton take his place as the singular all-time greatest in terms of stats.
But when asked by  Blick to provide a specific update on Schumacher’s health, he refused and said: “No”.
“There is only one answer to this question and that is what his son Mick gave in one of his rare interviews in 2022: ‘I would give anything to talk to dad’,” he went on.
“This sentence says everything about how his father has been doing for over 3,500 days.
    “A case without hope.”

Following that skiing accident in the French Alps in 2013, Schumacher spent 250 days in a medically-induced coma in hospital.
Even since he was eventually permitted to return home, few have seen or visited him, and reports of the German’s condition are extremely rare.
Some friends and even family members have been kept in the dark by those closest to him in an effort to prevent leaks to the press.
Schumacher’s son, Mick, continued the family’s legacy of F1 drivers when competing for Haas in 2021 and 2022.
He is now a reserve driver for Mercedes.
Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, offered a small but powerful update on her husband’s health during the 2021 Netflix documentary about the German.
An emotional Corinna said: “Michael is here. Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength, I find.
“We’re together. We live together at home. We do therapy. We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he’s comfortable.
“And to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.
“We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives.

Deadline for F1 chiefs to respond to Felipe Massa’s ‘Crashgate’ case PASSES with Lewis Hamilton’s 2008 title on the line

THE deadline has passed for Formula 1 and the FIA to respond to Felipe Massa’s lawyers regarding their “Crashgate” complaints.Massa’s legal representatives sent F1 and FIA chiefs an eight-page dossier alleging a “conspiracy” over the handling of the “Crashgate” scandal during the 2008 season.

Massa, 42, was beaten by Lewis Hamilton by a single pointCredit: AFP
The Brazilian lost out on the world championship by a single point to Lewis Hamilton during the final race of the campaign.
Earlier in the season he dropped from first to 13th in Singapore, after Nelson Piquet Jr deliberately crashed to help his Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso’s own title ambitions.
Piquet Jr crashed during the 14th lap, when only Alonso had pitted.
Earlier this year former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone admitted that he and ex-FIA president Max Mosley had learned of Renault’s plot in 2008 – before it all came to light the following year.
    READ MORE ON F1
Ecclestone, 92, said that he and Mosley kept quiet in order to “protect the sport and save it from a huge scandal”.
Massa, 42, is now seeking compensation for what his lawyers claim to be tens of millions of euros in lost earning and bonuses.
According to The Independent, a two-week deadline was initially set for F1 and the FIA to respond to the dossier.
But after they claimed that was not enough time, the deadline was extended until 4pm yesterday.

An extract of the letter sent to F1 and the FIA read: “Simply put, Mr Massa is the rightful 2008 Driver’s Champion, and F1 and FIA deliberately ignored the misconduct that cheated him out of that title.
“Mr Massa is unable to fully quantify his losses at this stage but estimates that they are likely to exceed tens of millions of Euros.
“This amount does not cover the serious moral and reputational losses suffered by Mr Massa.”
Should Massa’s legal case be successful, he could potentially be awarded Hamilton’s 2008 title.
But the former Ferrari star accepts that this is unlikely.
He said: “There are rules, and there are many things that, depending on the country, you cannot go back after 15 years to resolve a situation.”
    ‘A STOLEN RACE’
On his case, Massa told Esportlandia: “I consider myself with great chances of having had that title.
“If you remember Singapore, it was a steal. After Bernie Ecclestone spoke about it, we are trying to understand, legally, if there is any chance of going back.’
“So it just goes to show that I was totally wronged by what happened that year, in a stolen race.
“This made me lift the antenna and go after justice. I’m not a lawyer, but everyone knows, I was clearly wronged and I think justice is part of our fight to get what happened right.
“That was a stolen run. It was manipulation, which is a very serious thing. It wasn’t an engine that broke down. There was also an engine that broke, but that’s part of the game.

“They made Nelsinho Piquet crash because he wanted to help his team-mate, who was last in the race, to win. They totally did a manipulation for a result.”
Asked about his Crashgate comments by Reuters, Ecclestone said: “I don’t remember any of this.” More

Michael Schumacher’s village left abandoned with just 12 PEOPLE still living – and it’s set to be completely torn down

MICHAEL Schumacher’s home town has just 12 people living in it after becoming abandoned as it prepares to be completely torn down.Kerpen-Manheim, located around 20 miles outside the city of Cologne in western Germany, is set to meet a tragic end.

It is set to be flattened in order to make way for Germany’s largest open-pit coal mine – the Hambach surface mine.
This is despite a statutory plan being put in place to phase out coal within the country in 2029.
Nonetheless, the excavators are set to begin their destruction in 2024.
But three things will remain intact, including the listed St. Albanus and Leonhardus church and Schumacher’s childhood home – restored by Michael’s brother Ralf.
    Read more in F1
“I grew up with lots of animals. Of course, that leaves its mark,” Ralf told Auto Bild.
“And since, thanks to the Greens [political party], my entire hometown didn’t fall victim to lignite mining after all.
The legendary Erftlandring go-kart track, where the seven-time Formula One world champion honed his skills, will also remain.
This was where Michael’s parents took him once he had crashed his motorcycle engine-powered pedal kart, built by his Dad, into a lamp post.
    Most read in Motorsport
The go-kart track, which was recently served by Ralf as the youth director, helped to discover a new generation of talent.
“I was the youth director until recently, but now someone else is doing it, which makes sense because I can’t always be on site,” said Ralf on the Kerpen-Manheim track.
“But I’m glad that the kart track is still there.
“It has been newly asphalted and parts of it are on land that belongs to me. I live right next door.
“We try to promote young German drivers, which is hard enough in Germany at the moment.”
The surviving infrastructure in Kerpen-Manheim will show just how much the area has benefited from Schumacher’s success, at least.
The area also holds extra sentimental value for the Schumacher family because it is where Michael married his wife, Corinna, in 1995.
However, the house at Forsthausstrasse 92, where the couple first moved into together, is no longer there.
For everyone else who has come and gone throughout Kerpen-Manheim’s history, the town will soon become a distant memory.
That is, however, despite the fact it has basically worn down to nothing as a result of its abandonment over the years.
With just 12 residents to its name, Kerpen-Manheim waits patiently for its demolition, with overgrown roads and boarded up houses dominating the landscape.
As for Michael himself, he remains out of the public eye following his tragic skiing accident in 2013.
His wife, Corinna, revealed in the 2021 Netflix documentary, ‘Schumacher’, that he is “different, but here”.

However, one of the F1 legend’s closest friends dealt a fresh blow to fans in an update on Michael’s ten-year health battle.
F1 journalist Roger Benoit described the 45-year-old as “a case without hope” in a harrowing confession.
