Lewis Hamilton sensationally DISQUALIFIED from US Grand Prix after failing post-race inspection in huge controversy

LEWIS HAMILTON has been DISQUALIFIED from the US GP – after his car failed a post-race inspection.Hamilton, who had finished second in his Mercedes behind race-winner Max Verstappen, was kicked out along with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Both cars were subjected to random checks after the chequered flag and were found to have breached the rules with regards to the thickness of the bottoms of the car.
The skid block, or plank as it is known, is the bottom part of the car that makes contact with the track and causes the sparks.
Hamilton’s Mercedes team were summoned to the FIA stewards in race control at 6pm local time Austin, over two hours after the race had finished.
The three team representatives emerged 15 minutes later before their Ferrari counterparts were summoned.

An hour later, the FIA confirmed the news that both drivers had been disqualified.
A statement said: “The Stewards heard from the team representatives of car 44, the Technical Delegate, the FIA Single Seater Director and the FIA Single Seater Technical Director.
“During the hearing the team acknowledged that the measurement performed by the FIA Technical Team was correct and stated that the high wear on the skid pads was probably a result of the unique combination of the bumpy track and the Sprint raceschedule that minimised the time to set up and check the car before the race.
“The Stewards note that the onus is on the competitor to ensure that the car is in compliance with the regulations at all times during an event.

“In this particular case, the rear skid in the area defined in the Technical Delegate’s report was outside of the thresholds which includes a tolerance for wear.
“Therefore, the standard penalty for a breach of the Technical Regulations is imposed.”
It comes after Hamilton had earlier told reporters how he felt he could have won the US GP had it not been for a bungled strategy call and pitstop.
Hamilton missed out by under two seconds and believes on another day he would have finished ahead of the Dutchman.
Speaking ahead of his disqualification, he said: “Yes, I do think we would have been in position to fight Max and we made life harder for ourselves than it needed to be.
“There were a lot of areas where we could have been better and the positives are we could match them for pace.
“Second is great. To come in this weekend and have real strength, it is a solid second, it feels really positive.
“We have a few races ahead and we don’t know how the car will be, but if we are in position like this, and get the strategy right and the pitstops right, we can be racing for a win.”
Hamilton’s disqualification means that McLaren’s Lando Norris is bumped up to second and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz is placed third. More

Hamilton, cheered on by Prince Harry, who sat in his Mercedes’ garage, is desperate to end Verstappen’s reign at the top.
However, his bid for a record eighth world crown has been denied by a series of duds off the Silver Arrows production line.
But this though, a whole load of new upgraded car parts in preparation for next year’s season, will give him a huge boost in confidence as Verstappen no longer was able to run away with it.
Hamilton was second to Verstappen, but the gap had been slashed to under two seconds on the final lap in what proved to be a great race for the US fans.

Lando Norris made a sensational start from second place on the grid to leapfrog Charles Leclerc, who started on pole.
The Brit held his nerve while the rest of the field squabbled for track position behind him with Hamilton battling with Carlos Sainz for third place.
It made for a nervy position for Verstappen, who tiptoed through the melee of cars in front of him after he qualified in sixth place.
By lap four, Hamilton had moved into the podium places with a neat overtake on Sainz while Verstappen had climbed up to fourth on lap five.

Hamilton was still making progress and he passed Leclerc to run in second place behind Norris, who was looking in control out in front.
However, it was not going so well for his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who was told to retire his car after 11 laps to join Esteban Ocon in the pitlane after he retired his Alpine.
Verstappen set about eating into Leclerc’s advantage before making his move past the Ferrari man at turn one.
The world champion was given a helping hand as Hamilton’s Mercedes team made a slow pitstop on lap 21, which dropped him behind the Red Bull man when got back on track.

And so the relentless Red Bull racer started to pile the pressure on Norris, who had the Dutchman growing ever-larger in his mirrors.
Norris made a slight mistake at turn 11 on lap 25 which allowed Verstappen to move even closer in what had become an inevitable outcome.
Like watching a lion stalk its prey, Verstappen slowed edged closer to the rear of Norris’s McLaren.
And he pounded on lap 28 at turn 12, powering past with Norris barely putting up any resistance.
Over the radio, he half-heartedly questioned whether the new race leader had gone off track in making his overtake. Verstappen hadn’t; the move stood.
The race had not even reached the halfway point and it was looking like another dead rubber – however, it sparked into life.
Unusually, Verstappen did not power away from the rest of the field and into the distance – possibly hamstrung by a brake problem.

The ace showed there’s still plenty of fight leftCredit: Getty
This time, both Norris and Hamilton stayed within four seconds of the Red Bull man.
After the second flurry of pitstops, Hamilton was third and Norris was second as the two Brits hoped to take advantage of any mistake from the leader.
The usually untroubled star may have been running at the front but he could sense this was no cake walk like some of his other 15 wins this season.
He snapped at his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who passed on some information over the radio: “Please, no talking in the braking zones!”
The intensity was rising – and it cranked up another notch when Hamilton passed Norris for second place.
The two played out a thrilling fight for position at top speed, dancing through the corners just millimetres apart.
The battle started on lap 48 and lasted nearly two laps before Hamilton was the victor.
Verstappen snapped again as Lambiase told him that Hamilton was closing, rifling back with another sweary message.
He held on to take his 50th win in F1, but Mercedes’ dramatic improvement will be a concern.

Norris was third  – his fourth podium in a row – and Sainz fourth. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was a disappointing fifth and Russell was seventh.
Hamilton said over the team’s radio: “Fantastic weekend, guys. Really well done. We’ve got lots of work to do in different areas but let’s keep pushing.
“Thank you to everyone back at the factory for the upgrade. Let’s keep pushing, we are getting closer. Next time. I really appreciate you not giving up on us.”
Hamilton added: “First of all, we have to congratulate these guys (Red Bull). The team has done an incredible job all year long, just dominated and Max has been flawless.
“We were catching towards the end and I was hopeful we needed some more laps.
“The team did an amazing job this weekend, so much work to bring this upgrade here.
“Honestly it was really difficult after the last race, firstly with everything that is going on in the world and the big mistake I made. I really felt like I let the team down so much.
“I had to go through a real deep process of getting back here. It’s one of those experiences of not how you fall but how you get up.”
Verstappen said: “The whole race, I was struggling a lot with the brakes. Around here there are quite a few braking points.
“I couldn’t really have the same feeling as yesterday so that definitely made my race a bit tougher out here today.

    United States Grand Prix results
It was a hard fought race with Red Bull being pushed more than they have been at all this season.

    Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
    Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
    Lando Norris (McLaren)
    Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
    Sergio Perez (Red Bull)

Considering he was having to manage some issues with his brakes, it is a well earned win by Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
Max Verstappen wins the United States Grand Prix
Lap 55/56 – Verstappen leads, Hamilton second
This has been a tough race for Max Verstappen.
His team keep giving him information on the braking sections which sends the Dutch driver into a rage.
“No talking to me on the braking man!” is the message.
Hamilton has closed the gap to 2.8 seconds now.

Lap 53/56 – Verstappen leads, Hamilton second
It seems that Mercedes’ choice of when to pit Hamilton was all too late for the tactics required to challenge Verstappen.
Even with his brake issue, the Dutch driver seems as though he has this race in the bag.
The Red Bull car has a 4.4 second lead over his rival.
Lap 51/56 – Verstappen leads, Hamilton second
Lewis Hamilton goes on the offensive and takes on the McLaren.
Lando Norris tries to hold him off but the grip of the Mercedes is just too much for him on the corners.
Max Verstappen is still 4.9 seconds ahead of second, although he is managing a problem with his brakes.
Lap 49/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
There is a real battle for second place on now.
Hamilton is trying to reel in fellow Brit Norris.
Verstappen, meanwhile, is pulling away from second as he opens up a 4.1 second lead.
Lap 47/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
Mercedes feel that Hamilton can push for second place, maybe even for the win with the situation as it is.
Verstappen will have a real challenge on this evening to hold onto his win.
Currently, the Dutchman is 2.7 seconds ahead of Norris, with Hamilton right on the tail of Norris.
Lap 45/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
Hamilton makes his move to take Leclerc and moves into third.
He has also set the fastest lap of the race also.
It will be interesting to see what Mercedes’ tactics are now.
    Credit: AFP
Lap 43/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
The top three cars are all on the hard tyres out there now.
Hamilton is the only one in the top seven cars that has the medium tyres.
Sat in fourth place, he could be a factor in the final stages of this race.
Lap 41/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
It is all change as Lewis Hamilton goes into the pits.
Max Verstappen takes advantage and uses DRS to take Leclerc.
Lando Norris then uses some attacking driving to move into second ahead of the Ferrari driver.
Lap 39/56 – Hamilton leads, Leclerc second
This should be an interesting end to this race with it finely poised.
Hamilton will no doubt have to pit once more.
As Leclerc moves into second place, Verstappen is now in third.
Lap 37/56 – Hamilton leads, Perez second
Verstappen opts to take to the pits.
The important thing is that he came out of the pit ahead of Lando Norris.
Both Red Bull and McLaren are on the same tyres now.

Lap 35/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
Verstappen loses his cool on the team radio, he is having real issues with the brakes on his car.
He tells his team “this car is a piece of…..”
Meanwhile, Norris has opted to pit which seems strange due to what they were planning to do with their one-stop plan.
Lap 33/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
There is still all to play for here.
Verstappen will have to pit again which is why Norris is not pushing it at chasing him.
They feel with the 21 seconds lost from pitting, their one-stop strategy could be key to winning this race.
Lap 31/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
Hamilton has managed to close the gap between third and second from 7 seconds to 4.8 seconds.
All this after he told his team on the radio, “you’ve given me too much to do now, there is a big gap!”
Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz has set the fastest lap of the day from fourth position.
Lap 29/56 – Verstappen leads, Norris second
Norris went a little wide at the corner, giving Verstappen a chance.
As they head into the corner, the Red Bull driver makes his move.
The McLaren tries its best to hold him off but it was too much of a struggle.
Lap 27/56 – Norris leads, Verstappen second
Lando Norris locks up at the corner, allowing Red Bull to close the gap.
Max Verstappen is now only 1.2 seconds behind the race leader.
The Red Bull has the McLaren in his sights now.
    Credit: Reuters
Lap 25/56 – Norris leads, Verstappen second
Norris talks on his team radio about maybe going with a one-stop race to try and challenge for the win.
Verstappen has two sets of medium tyres to use.
The McLaren is out there on hard tyres, if he manages them they could last.
Leclerc comes out of the pit lane with hard tyres suggesting he is definitely trying a one-stop approach to the race.
Lap 23/56 – Leclerc leads, Norris second
It all goes wrong for Mercedes as they get the pitting all wrong.
They waited to long and then told Hamilton that Verstappen was inside their pitting window.
As a result, he comes back out on track behind the Red Bull some 7.1 seconds behind Verstappen in third.
Lap 21/56 – Hamilton leads, Leclerc second
Interestingly, only Lando Norris is out there on hard compound tyres now with everyone else on medium.
It is due to Norris only having one more set of new medium tyres available today.
Neither Mercedes has pitted yet and are planning on the team radio when this is going to happen. More
