Max Verstappen leaps to F1 rival Lewis Hamilton’s defence as he pleads with FIA to make rule change

MAX VERSTAPPEN has called on the FIA to make a change after Lewis Hamilton was disqualified at last week’s US Grand Prix.Hamilton and Charles Leclerc had finished P2 and P6 respectively before they were disqualified after being found to have run illegal floors.

The skidblock, or planks, that run along the centre of the car which are designed to protect it from scraping along the floor have to be a certain thickness.
Hamilton claimed his penalty came after his rear end skidblock failed to make the minimum requirement by 0.05mm.
The seven-time F1 champion fumed ahead of the weekend’s Mexican GP that more cars should have been checked due to his belief that more than 50 per cent of the cars would have been illegal.
Martin Brundle was critical of the FIA ruling following the race.

And this sentiment was echoed by champion Verstappen.
Speaking to media ahead of the race in Mexico, the reigning champion said: “Of course nobody tries to do it on purpose, but because of the Sprint format, you only have one practice session to nail everything.
“Once you are in the wrong [set-up], there’s nothing you can do, the only thing you can is bump on the tyre pressure – but then you’re driving around on balloon tyres.
“It is not what you want to see for them, but also as a team, we know that dropping the car gives you that performance, but it is because of the whole format that you put yourself in that position because normally, I don’t think anyone would in a normal weekend.

“The problem is that it is just impossible to check everything but the thought process from every team is that no-one wants to be illegal, no-one sets the car up to be illegal.
“With the random checks that get carried out, I mean sometimes it is the top four, sometimes it is in the middle of the field, that is just how it goes.
“You can’t check every car for every single part, otherwise we need 100 more people to do these kind of things, but I think the only thing is that if you check one car, and it is illegal, you should check the other one as well.”
Verstappen, 26, has reportedly been assigned bodyguards during his time in Mexico City owing to fans blaming him for the struggles of Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez this season.
The Dutchman – now a three-time F1 champ – is well known to not be a fan of the Sprint race format.
F1 bosses are considering “radical” new plans to spruce up the weekends when they come around, including a reverse grid race.
However, Hamilton has previously been critical of such an idea, while now-retired four-time F1 champ Sebastian Vettel did not mince his words and labelled it “bulls***” in 2019.
In the week since the US GP in Austin, Texas, Hamilton has thrown a party for his beloved dog Roscoe and announced a new career move with a non-alcoholic spirit called Almave.

Lewis Hamilton fumes that half of his F1 rivals got away with ‘ILLEGAL’ cars after Grand Prix result ‘tainted’ the sport

LEWIS HAMILTON says the decision to strip him of second place in last Sunday’s US GP has “tainted” the sport. The seven-time world champion felt that all the good progress F1 has made to crack the States was partially undone following the confusing ruling hours after the chequered flag in Austin.
Lewis Hamilton was left dismayed by the FIA’s rulingCredit: Rex
Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were disqualified after measurements on the skid blocks under their cars exceeded the maximum wear limit.
The sport’s governing body, the FIA checked only four cars and two failed the test, earning an instant disqualification, much to the confusion of fans across the globe.
Hamilton said: “The sport really had such an amazing weekend, such a great turnout and great race and then everytime we step forward with the sport, something like that really taints it.
“So going forward, we really need to do something and hopefully they will learn in the future.

“Rather than checking everybody and over 50 per cent of the cars failing – and I would have put all my money on it – maybe we could change the skid or the floor on the Saturday night so you don’t have this ridiculous event afterwards.”
Hamilton claims the skidblocks, used to keep the cars off the ground – and provide the sparks on TV, have little if any performance.
He added: “There are far more drivers’ cars that were illegal and the skid block is not a performance element.
“Of course if you have a flat surface, everyone is going to go as low as possible, it is just that some cars handle the bumps better than others.

“We have had a very stiff and bumpy car for two years and ultimately it failed the regulation.
“It was just terrible over the kerbs, if we would have raised the car it would have passed the test.”
Hamilton team-mate George Russell added: “We did all of the standard checks after FP1 and the plank looked absolutely fine.
“So there was no reason after the practice session to make any changes, but obviously, we got that very wrong.”
Lando Norris, who was promoted to second place in lieu of Hamilton’s disqualification, felt the FIA should have checked all the cars.
Norris’ McLaren DID pass the same check as Hamilton and Leclerc’s cars, and said: “They should have done [the whole grid]. It can always bite you one day.
“It’s unlikely that two cars are that different. So if one car is illegal, then there is a high chance that the other car is.”

Red Bull ‘forced to hire BODYGUARDS for Max Verstappen’ after F1 champ’s Wag Kelly Piquet fumed at his treatment

RED BULL have hired BODYGUARDS for Max Verstappen ahead of this week’s Mexico Grand Prix. That’s after the driver’s champion was booed last time out in Austin.

Verstappen continued his dominance this season as he got his sixth win at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas.
But he was booed by F1 fans there to support Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez.
There is a feeling from Perez fans that he has been disrespected by Red Bull.
And while the chorus of boos was ongoing, Verstappen’s girlfriend Kelly Piquet looked visibly unimpressed.

Perez enjoys a strong support in Texas, but that support will be magnified tenfold at his home race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico.
Perez has struggled again this season to match Verstappen and there is talk that he could lose his Red Bull seat going into next season.
Red Bull director Helmut Marko explained the decision to give Verstappen additional protection in Mexico to F1 Insider and said: “Max doesn’t actually want that and is relaxed. But we have responsibility for him. So we just want to be on the safe side.”
Team Principal Christian Horner explained that while he expects Verstappen to receive a hostile reception, he doesn’t think it will bother the Dutchman:

“I don’t think Max is going to get the warmest reception in Mexico! But that’s water off a duck’s back. One year you are the villain, the next year you are the hero.”
Verstappen has won four of the last five races in Mexico with Red Bull historically being very suited to the track.
There is speculation that should Perez fail to secure second place in the Driver’s Championship, he will lose his spot on the team.
But Horner poured cold water on that suggestion, saying: “With this car, it would be fantastic in such a season that we’ve had if we could finish first and second.
“But there’s no pre-mandate on Checo that you have to finish second or you won’t be driving the car next year. That’s never been discussed.”
Perez opened two of the opening four races this season before his form both in qualifying and races completely tailed off.
He has occasionally finished on the podium but his inability to challenge or even support his team-mate will surely be a concern to his team. More

F1 bosses considering huge format change with radical new plan slammed as ‘bulls***’ by Sebastian Vettel

FORMULA ONE chiefs are re-considering the introduction of a reverse sprint grid – a move Sebastian Vettel called “bulls***.”CEO Stefano Domenicali described the idea as necessary to prevent the sport from stagnating.

This means that drivers would start the sprint race in reverse order.
Using the current standings, Max Verstappen would start last, while Daniel Ricciardo would start at the front of the pack.
F1 bosses are prepared to consider reverse grid sprint races amid growing concerns that the current format has been unsuccessful in creating enough excitement.
Fans showed a lack of interest in the ‘boring’ United States GP Sprint race as ticket sales suggested a clear drop in demand.

A report from Autosport explains that team bosses have begun informal discussions about the changes.
It would involve either the top ten being switched or even the entire order being shuffled back to front.

He told Motorsport: “I think it is complete bullshit, to be honest.

“I don’t know which genius came up with it, but it is not the solution. It is completely the wrong approach.”

Hamilton said in 2020: “The people that proposed that don’t really know what they are talking about.”
While Mercedes boss Toto Wolff feels it is a flawed idea, as F1 has long been known for its purity of competition.
Wolff told Autosport: “I’m conservative in racing. I’d rather have no sprint races than meddling.
“Even more with reverse grid races, we are going towards Formula E where sport follows entertainment, while entertainment should follow sport.” More

Ferrari chief turns into Jurgen Klopp with outrageous excuse for Charles Leclerc’s US GP disqualification

FERRARI sporting director Diego Ioverno cited wind as one reason why Charles Leclerc was disqualified from last weekend’s US Grand Prix.Leclerc, 26, had finished P6 in the latest Formula One race before he and Lewis Hamilton – who had finished P2 – were disqualified for running illegal floors.

Ferrari chief Diego Ioverno cited a list of reasons why the disqualification had happenedCredit: Getty
Their race results were canned after the planks on the floor of their cars were found to have failed to meet F1 regulations for the minimum thickness allowed.
The planks, which run along the centre of the floor on the car, are designed to protect the bottom of the car from scraping along the ground which sometimes causes sparks to fly as seen on TV.
Ride height can heavily impact aerodynamic performance, but cars have to be a certain height to meet safety standards, which Hamilton and Leclerc’s cars failed to do.
In a post to the team’s social media page, Ferrari chief Ioverno explained what had caused the failure, citing lack of practice, set up time and track bumpiness on the list of reasons for the ruling.
    READ MORE IN F1
The 49-year-old said: “The sprint weekend is very peculiar and you have very little time to prepare the car [with] basically only one session and then you go in parc ferme (when only minor adjustments are allowed).
“It means that from that moment onwards you cannot touch the car any more. On top of this, Austin is a super nice track but it is extremely bumpy.
“Bumpiness is a difficult topic for drivers and for cars, in the past almost everyone failed the suspension and failed the chassis.
“We knew it would have been tricky and this is the reason why we also lifted the car throughout FP1, and from our consideration it should have been OK.”
    Most read in Motorsport
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS
In a similar vein to Jurgen Klopp famously blaming weather for a Liverpool defeat, Ioverno then said wind as another reason for the penalty.
He continued: “As a matter of fact, it turned out we were anyhow too marginal and also because of the wind that changed direction and had a stronger intensity than what was forecasted, this brought our car to not be legal at the end.
“There is not a lot to say and not a lot in this moment that we can do.
“With hindsight, rewinding the weekend we may have lifted even more the car but we would have lost performance, and we are here always to try to optimise our own performance.”
Reacting to the post, one fan said: “Unbelievable.”
A second said: “You have to be safe than sorry. This marginal change disqualified a car and Ferrari lose important points. Have to be more careful next time.”
A third wrote: “Irresponsible from a big team like Ferrari to let something like this happen, especially when their driver starts on pole.”
However, it should be noted margins in F1 – a sport constantly on the edge – such as weather changes and track temperature can make a world of difference to performance.
Following the disappointment, Leclerc and seven-time F1 champion Hamilton shared a joint post on Instagram of them looking miserable, captioning the post “mood”.

Ex-F1 star and Sky Sports pundit Martin Brundle questioned why the remaining cars were not tested, given half of the checked cars had turned out to be illegal.
